Chariot of the Gods [Alien RPG]
C H A R I O T O F T H E G O D S
T H E
S I T U A T I O N
As space truckers on the starfreighter USCSS Montero, you are used to running "the Gauntlet" - the trade route connecting Anchorpoint Station and the Frontier. Your ship's cargo hold is packed with dozens of tanks containing dangerous Tritium gas which is in the process of decaying into extremely profitable Hellum-3. Usually large tanker modules are used to tow higher concentrations of the gas safe distances, but the Montero isn't rated as a commercial towing vehicle. However, this is a small run - special order for Weyland-Yutani's corporate account on Sutter's World, a newly established Frontier colony. While the trip so far has been a piece of the proverbial cake, the Montero's sensors developed a glitch. Moments before your crew left Anchorpoint, the sensors pinged contact with a sensor reflection as you activated the displacement drive and went FTL. Now you find yourselves awakening from hypersleep, ready to deliver your goods to the colony of Sutter's World.

This is to be a long-form campaign that takes place over several months (possibly even a year). Your time and commitment is invaluable; however, I do not intend to exhaust you. I expect at least one post per week - more are welcome but not required. There will be no posting order; however, if two weeks pass with no word from you - I will be checking in to make sure everything is okay.
-
Chariot of the Gods will focus on interpersonal relationships within a bleak, tragic, and terrifying setting. While there may be comedic and lively moments, this game is an Alien game at its core. Difficult material will arrive and your characters have a very real chance of dying a brutal death. Though they may die, I expect each of you to take the time to get attached and play your characters as realistically as possible. Hell, maybe some even fall in love. After all, what is a horror game without a little bit of trauma?
-
I will be accepting 5 players. If more are interested, then I am open to running concurrent games. This campaign was published with premade characters. Their character sheets are below. You may play one of these, tweaking personality and backstory to your preference. You may also create your own character. If you do not have access to the CRB, that's fine. I will detail the progress in [PLACEHOLDER].
-
Although this is a horror game and your characters will be placed in life-threatening situations, I expect players to be friendly with each other in OOC regardless of any character conflict. If Bob's character pulls a gun on Jane's character in fear, I don't expect Jane to harass Bob in OOC. In-game party conflict is expected.
- C O M F O R T & S A F E T Y : If a topic is breached in game or OOC that you are uncomfortable with, please let everyone know immediately. You can also tell me directly so I can tell the group while you remain anonymous. The characters can be traumatized, but that doesn't mean you should be.
G A M E M O T H E R
I N F OYes, that's right - Gamemother. It's the wonderful title the Alien RPG gives it's DM. Just don't make it weird and call me mommy, okay?
I am a long-time lover of Alien, horror, and TTRPGs. So when I discovered Free League's Alien, I knew I had to have it immediately. Then the dreaded COVID hit and I ended up moving across the United States leaving me with no one to play this wonderful game with. Hopefully you will allow me to share it with you!
Please be patient with me. While I have DM'd many games around a legitimate table, this is my first venture into the realm of Forum DMing. I will be doing my absolute best to ensure that we both have an amazing game/writing experience.
P R E M A D E
C H A R A C T E R SIf this is your first time in an Alien RPG, I strongly encourage you to take one of the following characters. You may tweak them as you see fit, provided their stats remain the same.
Claim a character by providing their backstory. If more than one person wishes to play the same character, I will make the ultimate decision.
The completed premade character sheets (including abilities and gear) can be found here.
If you wish to create your own, go [PLACEHOLDER].

VANESSA MILLER, OFFICER
Captain of the USCSS Montero
AGE: 46
PERSONALITY: Thrifty
You're tired of being a corporate cog and want out. If you could finally get enough money to get your own ship, you could start controlling your own destiny on the Frontier. The company has offered you a lease-to-buy option on the Montero, but that doesn't make any sense unless you can afford to overhaul her for better cargo runs. Without an engine upgrade to allow her to tractor bigger loads, you are losing thousands of dollars every day. You need to find a way to make enough money to lease the Montero and upgrade her, or, better yet, go independent and replace her with a newer ship.L E A H D A V I S , P I L O T
LEAH DAVIS, PILOT
Pilot of the USCSS Montero
AGE: 27
PERSONALITY: Adrenaline Junkie
Safety limits? Those are lies. Any vehicle or piece of equipment can be pushed past the red line and still work fine. You do it as often as you can, just to keep from getting bored. Unfortunately, daily routines are never that exciting, and that's why you've developed a little stimulant problem. Your Weyland-Yutani prescription has just about run out, and you need to get some more fast. You'll do just about whatever it takes to keep yourself from crashing, even if it puts you in danger. Whether it's an adrenaline rush or substance abuse, all that matters to you is that you are flying high.DRUG ADDICT: You must use some form of recreational drug every Shift, or your STRESS LEVEL increases by one. You cannot relieve stress without consuming your drug of choice.

Your job sucks. Practically everyone on this ship gets paid more than you for doing nothing. You want to do less work and get paid more for it. Your younger brother back on Earth is chronically ill, and your family keeps begging you to send more money to support them. If there's a way to increase your share on this run, you'll do it. You grew up alone. Your parents sold power loaders on the frontier for a living and did not have much time for you. Hopping from colony to colony also meant you never were in any place long enough to make real friends. This crew is the closest thing to a family you've ever had - dysfunction and all. PERSONALITY: Ambitious
You've been embedded with the Montero crew for a good six months now, evaluating their performance to see if the ship and crew should be scrapped and fired, or promoted and given a new ship. You've actually come to like this motley assortment, but there is no room for advancement in this work. Now, a special order has come your way, and you finally see your chance to climb. Ptolus: City by the Spire
Ptolus: Monte Cook's City by the Spire, the classic and much beloved campaign setting now returns for 5e.
Ptolus is meant to be fantasy role-playing in microcosm. It embodies all that is fundamental to the genre,
but it does so in the space of a single city. That means there are dungeons to explore as well as townsfolk to
interact with. There are strange magical mysteries to discover, demons to fight, and even dragons.
Ptolus is truly a city of adventure—player characters don’t have to leave it to embark on amazing adventures.
THE BASICS
Rules System: D&D 5e
Theme: Sandbox (dungeon, urban, political, intrigue)
Starting Level: 1st
You are just arriving for the first time in Ptolus, and you have heard a few things about this city, that is why you have come — for Ptolus is not without a reputation, to say the least. To call Ptolus a dynamic place with a strange and varied identity is to understate the situation greatly. Only now are explorers truly discovering how ancient the city really is and unearthing details of its varied history. Ptolus is where that strange breed that calls itself “adventurers” congregates. It’s a place where people are as concerned with what lies below the ground as they are with what’s above. This is like no place else in the world.
Ptolus lies in the world of Praemal within the bounds of a very old Empire unsure of whether or not it has toppled. Three different emperors claim the throne, and portions of the once great realm cleave off like icy shards from a melting glacier. This decaying society looks upon previous centuries and sees grander, more civilized, and certainly better days. Progress seems on the decline—skills and lore that people possessed just a few hundred years ago are lost now.
This is not a time to lose hope altogether. Older than our own 'real-world' cultures, this civilization is more sophisticated in some ways, but less so in others. A myriad of races and peoples have come and gone, creating an intricate (and sometimes confusing) amalgam.
Good struggles against evil, and law against chaos. So far the shadows only threaten the light— they do not yet consume it.
Not so long ago, the first men and women who would one day be called “delvers” returned from exploring the catacombs below the city of Ptolus laden with gold and magical treasures. Today, hundreds of new would-be delvers pour into the city each month, hoping to strike it rich like others before them. Most never crawl up from the realms below, but adventurers keep arriving with dreams of gold and fame. Those who do emerge back into the light bring with them tales of surprisingly vast reaches of natural caverns and ancient hewn passages. Perhaps dating back to the dark days when this area lay in the thrall of the terrible Skull-King, Ghul, when the region was pocked with winding warrens and subterranean chambers created by his dark armies.
They also tell of the horrors that dwell outside the life-giving reaches of the sun: unknown monsters and devious demon-minded things with a cunning unknown to human-, elf-,or dwarf kind. In the city, entire industries have evolved quickly to service the needs of these adventurers. In the shadow of an unnaturally tall, ancient spire with a very dark past, a whole new form of economics, politics, and social structure struggles to be born.
Creatures and individuals (good, evil, and otherwise) that normally remain in the shadows are drawn to this large gathering of adventurers and magic. The needs of the delvers prompt renewed devotion to magic, science, and religion. As the Empire of Tarsis dies, Ptolus—for years a backwater town on the edge of civilization—is quickly becoming the center of something much larger than itself. Omens and prophecies of children born with strange birthmarks surface in the city with increasing frequency. No one yet knows exactly what, but something is happening in Ptolus.
Something new seems to be stirring in this city . . . something that is ancient beyond mortal measure.
Mechanically, this will be standard point-buy with 27 points. I strongly disfavor stat dumps, especially Charisma, without appropriate story justification. I also disfavor gimmicky characters. Considerably more effort should be on the personality, flavor and behavior of the character than on the mechanics themselves. During the selection process I will look for characters whose personality and story stand out that I think would make for some good story telling. If you plan on just scribbling some numbers on a piece of paper then this game might not be for you.
The only house rule in effect will be the PHB +1 rule, which means you can use the PHB plus one supplement of your choice for your character. Supplements can be any WotC Hardcover (i.e. Tasha's, XGtE, Volo's, etc.) but you get only one.
There are also new options in play due to the technological level of Ptolus, you can find new spells, new domains, firearms, and new technological equipment by browsing the Library folder in the game forum.
The posting rate for this game will be an average of two to three times per week. Some days there will be more posts than others, but this campaign will be run at a leisurely pace. If you do not post once within 48 hours during combat, actions will be taken for you (usually the dodge or assist action). I reserve the right to eject from the campaign anyone who has not posted in a week without prior warning of absence.
I expect players to engross themselves in the roleplaying element and contribute interestingly to the story and for this campaign I also favor longer posts with detail and emphasis on the growth of the characters over just posting to meet the requirement.
I also travel occasionally, but this rarely affects my posting. I will be selecting a total of four to six players. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.
APPLICATIONS
Available Books: All WotC Hardcovers (PHB, Sword Coast, Volo's, etc.). NO UA (Don't Ask). This campaign uses the PHB +1 rule, allowed races do not count as your +1.
There are also new options in play due to the technological level of Ptolus, you can find new spells, new domains, firearms, and new technological equipment by browsing the Library folder in the game forum.
Allowed Races: All common and minor races listed in the Races of Ptolus folder which is located by Clicking Here.
Alignment Requirement:All alignments allowed except Chaotic Evil
Starting Equipment: Based off class and background selection.
Ability Scores: Ability scores can be generated using the 27 point buy as featured in the PHB.
Hit Points: Maximum at 1st level, average each additional level.
The application process will be done in 3 phases.
Phase 1 (Hey we are already here!), here you will come up with an idea for a character and fill out a simple questionnaire.
Phase 2 You will finish a 10 minute (misnomer) background and fill out another questionnaire for your character.
Phase 3 Will see you create mechanics and actually roleplaying your character (while standing in line at the city gates awaiting your turn to enter), so that both you and I can get a feel for your character.
The deadlines for these 3 phases are as follows:
Phase 1 & II: Tuesday, March 16th 11:59pm CST
Phase 3: The number of applications received and how long the "in character" part goes on for will determine how long Phase III will last for each applicant. Upon completion, each applicant will be scored using the Application Scoring Process, after which the highest scoring six applications will be selected for the game.
I look forward to this epic campaign and hope you do too! I almost forgot, you will need the player's guide to understand the setting in order to create an application.
TECHNICAL STUFF
Phase 1 The Questionnaire
Make a thread for your application in this folder located by clicking here.
Then in your very first post in that thread answer the following questions in order.
1. Your experience with the 5e ruleset.
2. Your experience with PbP.
3. Expectations for playing and what you want out of the experience.
4. Philosophy as a PbP player.
5. Why you are applying to this game?
6. Define what you think good role-playing is in PbP.
7. What is your experience with Ptolus, if any?
8. What is the basic concept of your character? Sell me on the idea. Please include race, class, etc. but do not list any stats or mechanics.
9. Post some portrait art for a visual representation of your character.
That's it. Wasn't that easy? Once you have completed phase one then you can move to phase two.Phase 2 The 10 Minute Background
Add the next questions in order to your application.
Remember, I do not want to see stats, or mechanics, or sheets. We are working with the story of the character, mechanics can be posted later.
The Questionnaire:
1. How does your character interact with the others within a group?
2. What is your character's role in a group?
3. What are some things that are counter-intuitive about your character? I want one or two skills that would surprise others if they found out he knows them. Also include personality traits, positive or negative, that would similarly surprise others.
4. What are your character's goals, conscious and, perhaps, subconscious?
5. How easily does your character love? Have they been in love?
6. Is your character racist at all, either now or in their past?
7. All people believe something that is not true, both about the world around them and about themselves. What lies/untruths does your character believe about themselves and the world around them?
8. How is your character about material possessions?
9. What does your character perceive their major problems to be?
10. What does he perceive the solutions to those problems to be?
11. What are your character's religious beliefs?
12. What does your character fear?
13. How much of a temper does your character have? What sorts of things set them off?
14. Finally use the information from the questionnaire to write a background based around the above questions. The background can be as short or as long as you like, as long as it covers or touches on all the above information and puts it into a cohesive background. By doing this, it also gives me a sample of your writing ability as a player.
Once you have completed Phase I and Phase II then please let me know and wait for further instructions regarding Phase III.Common Questions & Answers
Quote:Are you expecting any progress done on Phase 2 before the deadline of phase 1? Wondering the order of operations as this is probably one of the most thorough application processes I've seen yet.
Quote:Should each part of our application be public, or is private ok?
Quote:What kind of races might be allowed?
Quote:What method will be used for ability stats.
Quote:Can our characters be locals to Ptolus?.
Quote:Not sure if anyone else asked, are LE characters allowed?
FINAL NOTES
GM Info: Hi there! It's Billy Watford. I’ve been GMing (DMing, Storytelling, what have you) for these last 35+ years (Or is it 37?), and gaming a touch longer. I’ve run what feels like hundreds of adventures via Paizo, WotC, TSR over the years and have currently many games running here on Myth-Weavers, some of which have been running for many years.
My GMing style focuses more on what makes a good story, and less on things like exploiting the loopholes in rules to their fullest. I like characters that are cards to begin with, but I LOVE characters that develop over the course of a game. Don’t make me deal with two-dimensional characters that have one annoying trait they exploit over and over, and I won’t have to make a tarrasque show up. Deal? Deal.
What kind of player am I NOT looking for?
Power Gamers (not sorry) and rules lawyers (really not sorry). Ptolus deals with a lot of new rules, new spells, firearms, and chaos tech. So I surely don't need players that want nothing more than to exploit new rules, or just to min/max their characters. Ptolus offers so much in the way of character development and roleplay.
What kind of players AM I looking for?
Ooh, this one is good. I am not really looking for players at all. I am looking for a cast of characters. I’m looking for someone who’s committed to not only a good plot progression (characters or players that stifle the plot make me want to scream), but character development. I want to see your character grow into their role. I want to see selfish street rat become swashbuckling hero! I want to see bored pencil-pushing acolyte become punishing wrath of an angry god! LET’S DO THIS. Welcome to Ptolus! Where your adventure begins.
I’m also looking for people who can follow basic rules of grammar. That being said, I can be pretty lenient about mistakes. BUT...for the love of god, in a system like this, where you can edit minutes, days, weeks later...take a little pride.
I look forward to your applications and good luck!
PLEASE READ THE PLAYERS GUIDE ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND THEN RE-READ IT PRIOR TO STARTING THE APPLICATION PROCESS!! IT WILL HELP YOU TREMENDOUSLY!!!

Roman Federated Republic
Salve citizen!
The year is 3484 by the Roman calendar, which begins on the date of the foundation of the original city of Rome, 753 BC by the Christian calendar. Nova Roma, or New Rome, is the capitol of the the Republica Federati Romanum, or Roman Federated Republic (RFR.) The New Romans forged the Republic by a combination of diplomacy, war and aid programs gone awry. Like the republic of ancient times, the resulting empire of colonies and protectorates grew more or less by accident, though in large part due to an aggressive sense of national security. The Roman Senate believes strongly in intervention in the affairs of its neighbors on the policy that stability on the borders brings peace within.

Out of the Abyss
Hello everyone, I have decided to try once more in the world of DMing pbp now that life hasn't kicked me so much and this was an AP I had always wanted to DM (and play) so let's have some fun.
Out of the Abyss is a 5e module where you find yourself captured by the drow and brought to their prison Velkynvelve with intent of being transferred to their capital of Menzoberranzan. You have no weapons, no spell component pouches, and barely any privacy as the drow had only left with the clothes on your back. You'll need a strong sense of survival and a willingness to ally with those you perhaps never thought possible in order to escape. Are you ready?

This is a solo game. I have never played this and have no idea what is it store. It could be great--or really not! Read along here if you like my writing style and just can't get enough of it.

Mythic Nihon
It is said in Nihon that a rolling stone gathers no moss. For the Nihonjin, moss is a good thing, denoting something that has been there a long time, gathering wisdom and knowledge. This is a time of troubles, with a weak Shogun unable to rein in the Great Lords - the Daimyo - as they vie against each other to bring the country into order or subjugation, depending on their proclivities. The Emperor still commands the mandate from Heaven and his spiritual supremacy is unrivaled. But he commands the bushi through the Shogun.
In these times few stones have the luxury of standing still. Men, even samurai of the bushi class, flow around carried by the waves of fortune where she may take them. There is much suffering, but also much opportunity. With the blessings of the kami and the watchful presence of the Buddha, any man may reach greatness.
The setting is called Nihon, it is a mythical parallel to Japan in the Warring States period, roughly 1500 CE. This period is before the introduction of gunpowder and before contact with Europe. The supernatural is real, magic functions, but it generally falls into two categories: folk and religious magic, centered around Shinto and Buddhist rituals; and the supernatural world that is mysterious, dangerous and just below the surface. The exception are the wizards, the rare wu-jen or sorcerer.- D&D 5e

Ozzy's Reign of Winter
Howdy!
Hey folks, the weather is getting warmer outside, but how would you like to return to winter? As part of an AP swap I took on duties of GMing the Paizo AP Reign of Winter, unfortunately after several months of waiting only two players have created their characters. Neither of them seem terribly fond of the idea of facing the white witches without more backup, so I'm here looking for some stout adventurers willing to brave the frozen lands of Irrisen.
The game centers around a mysterious snowstorm that strikes near the village of Heldren in the nation of Taldor. You will encounter all types of monsters and even the fearsome White Witches of Irrisen by the adventures end. Will you be able to keep the world from being cast into eternal winter? There's only one way to find out!
About Me
This is the first AP I've ever tried to run, but I've been running an arena combat game here on the Weave for the last two years. And I've been in another PbP game here on the Weave for 8 years running. I can't promise I'll be a quick poster, but I will be stubbornly dedicated. I wrote up a bunch about my approach as a GM (and a human being) here.
About the Game
We'll be starting at 2nd level and some Legendary & Everyman Gaming classes are allowed. We'll attempt to use Psychological Combat & Skill Challenges as well.
The current players are a Paladin and a Wizard. Since these APs can start a bit slow and no one likes being stuck at 1st level we're just fast forwarding through Part One. You can read the recap here.
I'm looking for 2-3 players.
Players
There are a few expectations that I want to lay out first:
What You Can Expect From This Game- A linear-story with little to no sandboxiness.
- A balanced game of role-play, combat and skill challenges. I'm hoping that there will be more 'interesting stuff to do' besides hit bad guys with sticks and chew the scenery. So do not neglect your skills. Even ones that don't get much use usually.
- A casual game with no pressure to keep up an unreasonably fast pace.
- I'm tough but fair and tend toward playing things by the book, but I am a really approachable GM. If you think I've ruled something wrong, feel free to prove me otherwise.
What You Should Not Expect- I will not be making a game post every single day.
- Do not expect any PVP to happen. This isn't a gladiator arena.
- Free candy. This game will have survival elements to it. I don't intend them to just be window dressing.
What I'm Looking for in Players & Apps- I expect a good attitude and patience with my schedule.
- Some familiarity with Pathfinder 1e rules. I try to be a stickler and appreciate you keeping track of ammo, conditions, etc.
- Please be organized! Apps and sheets that are clearly put together will get bonus points from me in selection.
- I expect players who are reliable. I don't want anyone ghosting on this game. If I like your app I will be looking through previous games you've played in to get a sense of your reliability. If you have a long series of abandoned games you're not going to get a chance to abandon this one.
- I want to see well rounded characters, not just a one-dimensional beat stick. What's your childhood? What's your personality like? How did your history bring you to this point?
- If you know that you will be unable to post for long period of time, let me and your fellow players know. We all understand that life happens and this is only a game. We will welcome you back with open arms.
- If you aren't able to continue or just no longer wish to play, just let me know. You don't have to give me a reason. Just let me know so I can find another player.

Secret Wars - Crisis
The powerful entity known as The Beyonder observes the entire multi-verse. Fascinated by the presence of superheroes on Earth and their potential, this entity chooses a group of both heroes and supervillains and teleports characters against their will to "Battleworld", a planet created by the Beyonder in a distant galaxy. This world has also been stocked with alien weapons and technology. The Beyonder then declares: "I am from beyond! Slay your enemies and all that you desire shall be yours! Nothing you dream of is impossible for me to accomplish!"
Shortly after this deceleration, the collection of Super Heroes and Super Villains are transported to "Battleworld" - where they begin their struggle.
The Battleworld is a patchwork planet that features several elements from various planets through out the Universe including parts of earth. The various Super Heroes and Super Villains soon find themselves in both familiar and unfamiliar regions.
This Battleworld is sure to prove to be as big a challenge as The Beyonders original command of "Slay your enemies".
Now on Battleworld, the Super Villains and Super Heroes prepare to battle it out.

Apocalypse World
Everyone always says "the world has ended, oh my god!", but it never ends all at the same time, ya know? There's always chunks of the Golden Age floating around, underground vaults, and military macguffins burned until a layer of burnt mud. This game will be the story of a group of people just trying to make their own little clump of dirt worth living in! By default the world is messy and dangerous, so they will have their work cut out for them!
If this sounds like your jam, pop into the forum and come up with a character! The only main stipulation is that you be willing to work with others on a shared backstory, and that you are okay with a "ticking time bomb" type scenario. There is limited space (about 4-5 players), so I hope you see you there!

Cyberpunk Red
While the dissolution of Corporate structures would have been ideal after the 4th Corpo war, the world governments and non-governmental organizations were caught in a position where they were unable to function without the critical infrastructure that the corporations had developed and controlled over the last half century. While much of this infrastructure had been devastated by significant corporate military action, these corporations and their funding were fundamental to the rebuilding. Because of the role that President Kress and the NUSA government played in abandoning Night City during the first half of the century, the politicians in the city declared independence, throwing their lot in with Arasaka & the multitude of other corps that the NUSA (and therefore Militech) had blamed for the nuclear bomb that had been set off, which killed millions, and displaced millions more. With such uncertainty looming, the world and its players see opportunities; Fixers all around night city fight tooth and nail for contracts with desperate corps and other denizens of Night City willing to pay anything to get what they want.
Mercs Wanted!
Listen up Night City, this is a broadcast to any of you Solos, Culture-Vultures, Deckheads, Joytoys and any other gonks with downtime looking to make an eddy, if you got a skill, I want it. I got contracts to close and you need the jack, so throw down your line and get out there on the streets.
Hey Chooms, I've planned this game out to be pretty open to players, kind of a pick up game for people, it's initially going to start off as multiple one shots, and hopefully according to player interaction and decisions, develop the world around the choices made. I'm looking for around 12 players that will be running missions in groups of 4 meaning that people can do different games depending on if their characters are able to at that time, but it could expand into more in the future.
