Yahs slips back from the crate. None of this felt quite right. The supposed commander of the fleet asleep and hungover in the middle of the day. A crate full of who knows what delivered into his quarters without any security check at all. No wonder things were going missing left and right. Under these circumstances she couldn't really blame Popsicle for indulging in a bit of clandestine acquisition. Still anything could be in the crate and something was rippling her ectoplasm. Quietly the plasmoid slips back from the crate and brings her mop into a more readied and defensive position.

Mechanics

Move back toward the door. Taking the Dodge action as the crate is opened.

AC: 16 | HP: 12/12 | Initiative: +3 | Passive Perception: 17 | Features

Lou asks the diviners if he can haven of the sending stones, in case there isn't one on his ship. He explains that he's pretty sure he's going to have to do all the navigating and maintenance (even though that almost certainly isn't true).

In the room, after addressing the sleeping officer, he stays near the door, waiting for the others to finish delivering the box and checking its contents.

Earlier on the Bridge...

Louis' request is met with an incredulous look that slowly morphs to pity "...it doesn't work like that. Sending Stones always come in pairs...Enollar's dweomer simply can't target an unlinked stone. It would be something like throwing a dart blindfolded and expecting to hit a point that could be anywhere in the multiverse. But I wouldn't worry, we keep Fleet ships well provisioned. I'm sure the quartermaster will supply one before your first real mission off-world."

Inside Mirt's Quarters...

Celsior watches curiously as Yahs pulls back defensively from the hamster-skin rug. Did she hear something? Smell something? Do plasmoid's even have the luxury of nostrils? It was impossible to know.

A slimy red crowbar meanwhile slowly extrudes from Lazuli's cytoplasm, like momma bird regurgitating breakfast for her chicks. Naz accepts the slippery tool, wedging it under the wooden crate's well-secured lid. Popsicle's beady little black ice eyes are inches away, watching the gap get larger and larger...

Suddenly there is a startling *wump* from inside, before a nasty chittering rattles a warning.

*CrSSH*

image.png.1ad9d2dd7ac9b628492cdaad365b1ea3.pngThe crate bursts, and a number of tiny alien hatchlings spill out. Ten cat-sized spider-like creatures with eel heads screech out in hunger. Those with some experience in Wildspace recognize the creatures as Neogi...xenophobic slavers and plunderers from the farthest realms, hated in all Wildspace systems. Masters of the Deathspider class vessels. Subjugators of the Umber Hulks.

One of the hatchlings with striped abdomen fur and shredding, metallic legs immediately bites one of its brethren in the throat...ripping out its tiny trachea and killing the sibling instantly before approximating a laugh.

As if the covers of his bed were lit on fire, Mirt tumbles backward out of the leathery water sac in his underwear. Hopping around on one leg, the Old Wolf struggles to don a pair of beige slacks. "...grrr, dammit...NOT had my coffee..."

Round 1:
Celsior, Naz, Yahs, Louis, Lazuli, Chaeek <-- UP
Neogi Hatchlings (8), Fierce Neogi Hatchling

9 tiny creatures have emerged from the box, filling the 8 squares around it. Naz and Lazuli were also near the box, meaning some squares have multiple neogi in them (tiny creatures). All players are within a move of melee range.

Chaeek is MIA and Naz likely will not post on the weekend, so no real rush posting.

Standing by the door, Lou watches as the box erupts into a swarm of metallic insects. While he would love to try out the new shotgun, his instincts kick in and he pulls out his shortbow, firing an arrow at one of the creatures.

He then steps around the corner of the doorway out into the hall.

She couldn't remember where she'd first learned to trust that little niggly feeling that often warned something unpleasant was about to hit the rotary cooling device. It was just another part of her mostly missing memories. She did think it was someplace hot. Regardless of its origin, the feeling of danger had proven itself once again. Unsure if this was just another horrible lapse in general security or if Tarto was making some sort of move on Fleet Command, Yahs was determined to put it to a stop. Even without her past memories, she recognized evil. "Nothing good ever looks like a spider." Page 257, Flight of the Faithful Warrior.

With a growl, the plasmoid moves to the outer edge of the swarming creatures and attacks. The resounding crack of the mop striking flesh echoes across the room followed moments later by the sloppier sound of a psuedopod following up.

Lou reflexively executes a textbook Goblinoid tertiary release pinch draw, sending a pair of arrows streaming towards the swarming aliens. The corresponding pair of targets is too quick however; one jumping in place as the barbed point shreds the wooden crate behind while the other simply loupe-de-loupes its bizarre eel neck to foil the second shot. Both of them hiss and chortle as the pirate bolts for cover.

Celsior summons the astral magics of his ancestral blade, chanting the same magics which have ensured elven dominance across the Sea for untold centuries. He immediately realizes his mistake: these creatures may be tiny but their mental capacity is only exceeded by their utter removal from any semblance of intelligent life. Creatures from the farthest wildspaces, basic aspects of social relations are just incomprehensible...thus the mechanical shapes of regular enchantment being a key that doesn't even fit the lock.

Yahs' patented 'hit-it-really-hard-with-a-stick' technique works well, though.

The plasmoid's ever-moist mop pins one of the hatchlings to the ground, and the follow-up pseudopod to the face smothers its existence promptly. Lazuli begins to see the wisdom in this method as well, joining in the melee with an old scallywag's prosthesis...reclaimed by nature and thrice enchanted. The substance that gushes from the neogi's wound is an odd slurry of creamy purple goo and tiny black crystalline shards, yet the aggravated horror defiantly does not flee...hunching up and ready to attack.

Nazira and Chaeek are too surprised to do much of use, paralyzed by the sudden appearance of a real and present threat. In their defense, Mirt fares little better...having finally slapped on a pair of pants the grizzled warrior slips his cutlass free with a "Haha!" only to rip his entire belt off, dropping the pants once more.

Popsicle tumbles backwards in shock pulling his damp dynamite stick free, looking for a source of flame or another goat, but finding neither.

Most of the hatchlings simply swarm the nearest, warmest, fleshy thing that has had the misfortune to cross their path. As they jump, bite, and drip venom everywhere...you can't help but notice the stylish little vests they are wearing. The bigger of the babies, that mean looking one with a stripe on its abdomen, is a bit more reserved then the rest. It scans the battle combatants slowly, as if employing some inscrutable tactic...before lingering on Nazira.

Lazuli and Naz hold their own for the most part against the chomping critters, but the cluster of chaos distracts Yahs just enough for one of the creepy bastards to sneak a metatarsal blade into one of her vital organelles...but in a burst of impressive mitochondrial metabolism, the foreign venomous liquid is engulfed by a specialized vesicle and partitioned away.

Nazira catches the gaze of the fierce looking hatchling out of the corner of her eye, and feels a powerful presence overwhelming her psyche...taking control. The room goes silent and black a moment out of time as their heartbeats slowly synchronize to one single, aberrant rhythm.

I'm thinking Naz would not have had her shield out, having just set the box down. So treating as AC 16 until donned.

Nazira please make a wisdom save DC 12 with advantage against a charm related effect. Failure means your Round 2 actions will be decided by the neogi.

Naz and Yahs, please roll con saves vs DC 10 or suffer the Poisoned condition. Yahs makes the poison roll with advantage from Plasmoid. This Natural Resilience trait also halves the poison damage itself, so Yahs takes only 7 damage from the crit instead of 9 and becoming Unconscious.

Growling with frustration (although it sounds more like a fart, coming from a bubble somewhere in her 'back'), Lazuli rears back to hit the hatchling again. She sees her fellow plasmoid get stabbed, though, so she yells a quick word of encouragement to her. "Shake it off! It's just a flesh wound! Oooh, look at their pretty vests!" Lazuli wonders what they taste like. Probably licorice. Black licorice. Nobody likes that.

Then, she remembers that she can't taste anything anyway. Eating one should be Ok. But just one. As a treat, for herself.

Yahs feels the blade punch through her outer membrane. Feels the poison flood into her system. It is an unpleasant feeling. Her mind spins for a moment as the rush of fluid necessary for her body to contain the poison throws everything out of balance. She recovers quickly but the wooziness still throws her off just a little as she lashes out at her ugly attacker with mop and podfist.
