After the Hunt

The next morning the you meet Grandfather Eiwa at the egde of the camp.

Grandfather Eiwa is the first to speak, his voice like gravel tumbling down a tall hill. “Young ones. Wipa says good things about your scout training. Said you might make good Mammoth Lords someday, ha! Let us hope so.” He smiles broadly, and his weathered face crinkles like parched earth. “The Green Moon rises three nights from tonight, and its light will mark you as true Broken Tusks. But there are still many things that must be done if we’re to be ready for the ceremony.” “Three things, exactly,” trills Letsua. He steps forward, even taller than Eiwa. “First, the ritual site at Rockloom must be scouted, cleared, and secured before the Green Moon ceremony. Second, we need you to carry fragile ceremonial vessels and fill them with water from the Gornok River. Third, there are some tapirs nearby which we seek to add to our herd; capturing them would go a long way toward your training.

Before i let you make your decision and be on your way with the first task, are there any question you have for us before we go?"

*** I'm sorry I forgot to add "the next morning" at the end of the last post.

This is taking place early the day after you rteturn from the moose hunt.

if there is anything that needs to be solved before we move on here, please let me know.

Egan knuckles the small of his back as the elders speak the next morning, wishing for the more comfortable bed he'd had back in town. "Mammoth Lords! Shoot, was just an old moose. And seven on one odds." The elders were a bit more 'peers' than elders to him, but he knows it's more a title of seniority and respect than age anyway. He manages to still his smart tongue for a moment and listen for a minute, then his scratches the white stubble on his chin and sucks his teeth. "Three things? Like from a story? Well I reckon we'll have a yarn or two to spin after this. I'd say go for the Tapers first, they're liable to run off they are. Well, sort of galumph, if you catch me, but move on all the same."

The dwarf contented himself with nodding approvingly to Egan's suggestion that the herding the tapirs come first, though perhaps the elders had a specific sequence of the three tasks in mind.

Though Qingalic was a hunter, dedicated to Skode and the art and challenge of the hunt, he tentatively noted:

Perhaps bringing in the tapir to the Following will be more a matter of the carrot than the stick? Have them come to think of us as their herd.

Having surprised himself by saying so much - two sentences - in a speculative manner, he clapped his lips shut. Based on what he'd learned on the journey back from the moose hunt, he regretted not taking part in the harvesting of that noble animal, but, he supposed, a dwarven warrior mindset would always drive him and he couldn't imagine not arranging a watch whilst in the wild.

Myriawen Portrait

Appearance

Ancestry: Arctic Elf | Sex: Female | Ethnicity: Ilverani | Age: 172 | Height: 5' 8" | Weight: 118 lbs.

Like any arctic elf Myriawen is frosty on the surface, yet there is a quality to her that makes it appear like her vains were burning with the fire of barely tamed passion. It is impossible to tell how old she is; her skin is flawless, yet her bright blue eyes reflect memories of ages.

She is always calm and soft; she easily shys away from loud noises, yet her voice has, in its softness, an irresistible quality to it. Sometimes she doesn't even need to use her voice, a faint knowing smile of hers alone can settle a fight between two Broken Tusks.

It is common knowledge that she can commune with other half-elves and elves without using words.

Myriawen Syornmaiden, True Good Arctic Elf Enigma Bard

Myriawen smiled over the announcement. In the tone of a songsinger she announced with exaggerated gravity: “Thus the clan’s hopefuls were sent out to perform three deeds on three days, for the glory of the Broken Tusks!” Followed by a little giggle, as clear as the morning. “Don’t worry Egan, we’ll find a way to spin this. As to how to herd these tapirs: I’ll leave that up to you unless they’re susceptible to song.”

She tried to recall when and where this ritual was, what a ‘Green Moon’ was in the first place, and why carrying this water required a scout team – over which distance where they required to carry how much water?

... however, her spotty memory played tricks on the elf, who was in some ways the oldest person participating in the conversation and others the youngest. Thus she simply asked all these questions.

"Thank you Grandfather," Talyn said softly, "We need to be ready to help more with Wipa having other priorities. I assume she won't be joining us for these tasks?"

Talyn was concerned she would not be ready. She would never admit it to anyone else but it was a great deal of responsiblitiy and she was all too concious of her many failings. She looked around the others, snorted and shook her head. At least she wasn't as foolish as some.

She stayed silent as the others discussed the tasks Grandfather Eiwa had set them.

"The Tapir's are nearby? That makes the decision easy surely?" she interjected with a slight tone of frustration in her voice. Foolish discussion for the sake of a discussion didn't set well with the young woman. Not when action was required.

Gol'garath was sullen and silent on the return to the Following, his exchange with Pakano still fresh in his mind, the young man was confident to the point of arrogance, and privileged to the point of narcissism. When he returned to tents under the Musk Ox banner, he sought out the fire at the center of the largest tent, knowing full well, that Merethig would be tending the fires. Gol'garath knelt in front of his House Leader and Mammoth Lord of the Broken Tusks, "Great Merethig, I seek guidance of one of your station. I am but a simple herder, and unfamiliar with the laws which govern our Following, but when one's tribemate threatens a fellow Tusk, what should one do if they, themselves are not yet, fully, inducted within the Following?"

The following morning, after his conversation with Merethig, Gol'garath awoke, having been summoned to the edge of the Following's encampment, where Grandfather Eiwa awaited them. He knelt, in reverence, for the respected elder, older than any Khellid Gol'garath had ever met, "Grandfather," he nodded, as smile on his face as he spoke with the man whom he viewed as close as actual blood, "You bless us with your presence. May the strength and endurance of the Broken TUsks flow into you, as a man draws air into his chest." He listened carefully as Eiwa spoke of their skill in the hunt for the bull moose, he listened as Eiwa laid out the tasks that would need completion before the following could resume their journey towards Rockloom and the Green Moon ceremony. "I, too," he nodded towards the others, "believe that we should capture and add to our herd." The fetching of water, and scouting of the ceremonial site could wait until after they had secured the additional tapirs for the herd. As the group seems to be favoring starting with the task involving the tapirs, Qingalic reflects on any encounter or lore he might have come across in the past. Lore (Hunting) check below.

It would appear that he has not likely encountered such creatures previously nor spoken to a hunter that has. 😟

The elders send you to meet Imek after this explaination about the tapirs is given

Letsua explains, “The tapirs will alert our mammoths to potential predators at watering holes. At the sight of water, tapirs rush ahead, whereas mammoths lumber toward it slowly. If something in the water attacks the tapirs, then we can redirect the mammoths before they panic or, worse, stampede.” He speaks soberly and matter-of-factly, perhaps adding, “Tapirs are plentiful. Mammoths are not. Broken Tusks are not. To ensure the survival of our following, we must protect the mammoths. The tapirs’ sacrifice is a noble one, and we are grateful to them.”

The miniute you meet Imek she starts walking and talking. She goes into the backgwound of each of the Tapirs and how they came to the be part of the herd. You all can tell after the first couple stories that she knows the animals and how to befriend them very well. While she really doesn't stop talking the entire trip her information is valueable if your character and stand to listen and not let their minds wander.

Would you each make a check for a DC 15 to be able to concentrate on the information. Use what ever you feel would be the best way you could do this. Anything to do with animals, nature or hunting will work. should you succed please roll a DC 15 will save also.

Apparently, Qingalic is distracted by his thoughts regarding Pakano's possible role in Weohotan's death. Qingalic hasn't been much use so far, I'm afraid.

OOC

I'll roll Lore (Hunting; +3) rather than Survival (+5) since Survival probably isn't specific enough to animals, albeit it includes tracking.

Since he did not succeed on the DC 15, I presume that he does not need to roll the Will save.

Still not quite sure who this 'Pankako' or whoever is, all these young folks looking alike with their baggy skins and spikey hairstyles, Egan just nods along agreeably when they keep talking about him. Egan doesn't know whose porridge the man pissed in, but he's pretty sure it wasn't his own. Pretty sure. Hearing might be going a bit, but the old tasters were still working.

He does, at least, try to listen to Imek. He picks up quite a bit on these 'Tay-pers', like how he's been mispronouncing their name for years, for one. Their lot in the tribe sounds a bit unfortunate. Someone expendable you send on ahead to see if there's danger, letting the important folk behind stay safe... Sounds a bit like a scout, actually...

"Reckon I'll feel a great kinship with these here Tay-pers, I do." he says to Imek, "Thankee for sharing all that learnin."

Golgarath.png.0d33894989c69ed2848d20d79da42ea5.pngGol'garath, Ox House Spear-bearer

AC: 18 | HIT POINTS: 16 | CURRENT: 16 | HERO POINTS: 1

FORTITUDE: +3 | REFLEX: +9 | WILL: +6 | PERCEPTION: +6

ACTIVE EFFECTS: None.

Gol'garath considered the words of the head of the Musk Ox House, that he should follow his heart, and while he did not feel that Pakano would be openly attack either Wipa or her unborn child. It was arrogant boasting, however, there was something beneath his words, a resentment, or something more. "Thank you for your wise words Merethig," he bowed his head, "I will watch the situation, and ensure that no harm comes to the Following, either from within, or without. Of this you have my word." He wasn't ready to name Pakano as an aggressor, however, if he witnessed such an act he would not hesitate to intervene, which meant he would need to keep a wary eye on Falcon House's heir apparent.

As the scouting party was joined by Imek, Gol'garath smiled widely, she had a youthful energy about her. Endlessly telling and retelling the tales of the herd, having named each of the individual mammoths, and any of the other creatures that followed the herd. "Sister Imek! It is always a pleasure to listen to your stories," he looked to Myriawen, "Imek could, very easily, become a Songsinger, if she did not love and care for the Following's herd so well." He tried to follow the girl's tales, pulling wisdom from the rambling oration, like spearing a gleaming fish in fast-flowing waters.

Myriawen Portrait

Appearance

MyriawenAppearanceIn-Post.jpg.377796d7cb8e8855652ffae8a62e6b50.jpg

Myriawen smirked. "Indeed," she returned to Gol'garath and then turned to Imek: "If you could tell the story of the Broken Tusks, you be a songsinger, Imek. No wonder you're skilled at enchanting the tapirs."

Myriawen listened closely to what Imek had to say, picking up not only relevant information for the hunt, but rhythm, turns of the story and the like.

Talyn was glad Pakano wasn't joining them for this task. I've was far better company. She listened quietly to the girl's stories. She studied the details carefully and thought back to the times she'd watched tapirs before.
