Marica looked at the beads, and quietly attached them to her necklace, before waving a hand enthusiastically at the Chizire. "Greetings," She said as he passed. He smelled rather like some of her customers when they'd come to her for funeral arrangements, still grieving. Not quite the same since the local tavern has also been a local customer. Apparently cutting liquor with embalming fluid or wood varnish was slightly less obvious than watering it down.

"I'll take this room, if no one else wants it," She added, examining room A14E. Indoors, so not as much lighting but she was used to the lack of light.

On the teacher's challenge, she frowned. No magnifying glass, so that was out. She knew some alchemical, but none for the creation of fire. Others had already gone to light theirs on existing candles, but she didn't want to copy the other students. But after a few minutes of racking her brains for an answer, she quietly went over to a window, and after fiddling with the glass a little, she instead goes to a lite fire source. "Couldn't get the right magnification."

Caeliria watched the young man that joined them spill word after word from his mouth. She hoped his perchant for speaking in large words was not due to some feeling of superiority. She suspected it was but would give him a chance. She pointedly ignored making eye contact with him when he looked to her.

When Teacher Ot showed them the rooms, she took her time to examine the rooms to ensure she wasn't going to be left with the smallest. Those who choose more quickly each received a small sniff of dissatisfaction at the presumption they could simply choose what they wanted. Quickly she choose the next largest,as she judged it.

When Teacher Ot asked them how they might light a candle without flint and matches she frowned. She had no fire magic prepared this day. She looked to Accar on her shoulder and the owl bobbed its green, runic head but had no suggestions. She watched N'dembe suceed with simple use of magic and did her best to keep her face expressionless.

"My new colleague has shown a simple answer to your question Teacher Ot. I assume that it suffices?"

She'd often found assuming a situation was addressed, and stating so from a position of correctness, gave her the upper hand. It was up to Teacher Ot to move onto something else. Not challenge her directly for an answer.

While you deposit your belongings in the room of your choosing

OOC

This short action will take place whilst we are looking over and selecting our rooms and dropping off our packs and gear. Btw, mention was made of Chizire locking his door. Do we find a key in the room along with the bead?

As the Tengu sets his pack on a chair or other convenient place, he quickly casts a Detect Magic cantrip when in the center (or close to it) of the space. A 30' emanation should easily cover the entire volume of the room. He is, of course, curious about the bead or any other magical effects that might be about, but aware of Detect Magic's limitations.

He also searches for a room key, hopefully on a desk; table; or in a drawer.

He then heads back to the lobby or lounge to answer Teacher Ot's first question (repeated here for GM convenience since we might be out of sequence a bit):

Listen carefully. "Can you light a candle without flint or matches?"

Kraawkaw pondered this deceptively simple sounding question. He did have the ability to cast Light and, in fact, could access the ability to Illuminate (another divine cantrip) objects such as candles and lanterns about him. Surely, though, most of these others could do likewise, he thought to himself appraising the other four new students with whom, it seemed, he would form a class.

No, the question must mean something else. Let's see ... if I'm lacking the normal resources to light a candle myself ... or maybe Teacher Ot means 'candle' in a figurative way?

Ruffling his feathers a bit as a prelude to speaking, he offered:

Perhaps by seeking out another with a candle already lit? As in illuminating ignorance by instruction? A metaphor for our coming to the Magaambya?

ACTIONS

1. Cast Detect Magic in room A14-B

After the others have made their selections, the young wizard considers his options. After a moment or two he smiles at the others and then absentmindedly casts an Unseen Servant spell. A slight shimmering in the air appears momentarily around the lad's luggage, then fades away. However, his belongings slowly magically arise and float into the northernmost available room (A14A). Cawing raucously Rafiki joins his friend into their new abode.

As his luggage gently settles into the room, N'dembe sets the pile of books by his new bed. The youth looks around merrily at the chamber as he whistles a happy little tune, soaking in all of its rich details. There was something oddly right about his decision. He didn't exactly know why, but this room seemed to almost call out to him. This was home, his new home.

Reverently taking the bead left in the room, he attaches it to a string hanging from his belt. After a bit, he rejoins the others outside.

Chapter 1: Kindled Magic

Magaambya

image.png.6799fc897c202f8d3553f8be3e3e78ef.pngChizire looks to Kraawkaw on his way out and chuckles, "A little spirit wouldn't go awry in this place. I'll catch you later."

The double meaning is hopefully not lost on the tengu.

image.png.cdd826dc5e8011a8a27dfc23dba379d8.pngTeacher Ot looks around, "A cantrip to light a candle without flint or matches? That's a novel approach. Go ahead and light it then."

There is a sudden downpour outside as rain crashes down on the roof above and streets outside. For a moment the sound drowns out the teacher's speech. Well seasoned to this weather, Ot simply pauses until it eases, and then continues.

In the distance you spot Chizire sprinting for cover.

"Let's see if it works."

There is no magic lingering in the rooms for those who check. Even the bead is ordinary glass though you could enchant it if you wanted to.

"I'll catch you later."

I shall look forward to introducing you to my familiar, then Kraawkaw answered in an exaggeratedly upbeat tone. She is a Red Doberman.

The Tengu bent his verb tense usage somewhat for effect. Some might call the effort a falsehood.

Maybe in ten years or so, the young priest thought to himself with a mixture of amusement and regret. So much for protective anonymity. You've already been called out by the first student you've encountered. And two of the five of the new cadre apparently already have bonds to familiars. He would have to excel with his studies.

His cantrip had detected nothing in his new room (or home), but, at least, he hadn't set off a "casting alarm." It had occurred to him that casting might be prohibited or dampened in certain areas, so he hadn't been entirely sure what his spell might accomplish. But, it would seem that the room and the ornament were mundane - or beyond his abilities at this stage to detect.

==========

"Let's see if it works."

Teacher Ot started off with the alliterative and prolix young man's - N'dembe his name appeared to be - casting of a Light cantrip. Kraawkaw awaited the Teacher's unfolding of the lesson, whilst wondering whether his own allegorical interpretation of the Lighting of the Candle problem would turn out to be Much Ado About Nothing.

Btw, mention was made of Chizire locking his door. Do we find a key in the room along with the bead?

"Is this alight or not? Many would say so but some would say the opposite."

"For this test I accept your answer as long as you accept it too. Does anyone here deny that the candle lit?"

The priest of Nethys was puzzled by the question: he resisted looking at the others, but there had as yet been no response from anyone. The silence was uncomfortable to the tengu, used to the frequent babble of 'flock or contact calls' common to avian species.

The candle is the focus of the Light cantrip, but the candle does not burn of itself. Were the Illuminate cantrip cast instead, the candle would burn as it otherwise would once the magic started the flame.

He ended with a slight ruffle of feathers.

What a fuss all about a stupid candle. Olis was starting to get bored and she hoped the classes would be more interesting.

"I think it doesn't matter," she interjected, "if you need light, it doesn't really matter how you get light. Candles, torches, magic, as long as it works for you at that moment."

The young Senghoran hesitates, then struggles to answer the pedagogue's query.

"Well, one dictionary definition for 'lit' is something that provides with light or lighting; illuminated, ex generis., 'a lit window at dusk'. In that case, then I believe that my Light cantrip was acceptable. However, a secondary definition is something having been ignited; burning, e.g., 'a lit fire'. To be honest, Teacher Ot, it depends on your point-of-view. If my solution is unsatisfactory, then perhaps I should have cast a Produce Flame cantrip, instead?"

At this point, N'dembe eagerly picks up another unlit candle and is prepared to light it using the other magic that he mentioned.

Pathfinder Strength of Thousands Adventure Path | Paizo

Chapter 1: Kindled Magic

Magaambya

image.png.cdd826dc5e8011a8a27dfc23dba379d8.png"Yes, your point of view, exactly," Teacher Ot beams, "This test is not about what you do so much about how you perceive the magical and mundane together. You reached for a magical solution automatically but you could have made a fire by rubbing sticks together or finding flame in a fellow student's room. Do you see?"

Lesson delivered he quickly moves on. Takula Ot looks outside and coos. With calming gestures he entice a small, blue feathered quail to land on the end of his staff. Then, quietly so as not to disturb the bird, he whispers, "This feathered friend has fine plumage though a little damp from the rain. Can you get one feather without plucking it?"

What strange test was this again, Olis thought as she looked at the bird. Again it wasn't something she was very familiar with. She had seen birds fly around, she used feather quills, but how they got from the bird in question to her hand to write she wasn't really sure about. And any other experience with birds she had besides seeing them fly around was in a stew.

"Can we scare it into dropping some feathers," she asked the others, hoping one of them had more experience, especially the Tengu student, "my only other solution would be to knock it unconscious and shaking it until it dropped one, but that might be overreacting. We can still keep it for plan B, right?"

She gave the others a grin.

Marica studied the bird, frowning at the suggestion of frightening the creature. "We could perhaps draw the feathers of the bird in detail, and cut it out? A representation of a feather standing in for an actual feather?"

" Can you get one feather without plucking it?"

The tengu was quite uneasy with this talk of feather plucking. First the catfolk's (hopefully) friendly banter; now Teacher Ot.

Kraawkaw had, however, been paying attention to his seminary lessons - mostly. And whilst he could not - yet - accomplish such magic, he knew the terminology.

Polymorph?

{later clarification}

Ourselves, that is. Grow one's own feathers.

OOC

Btw, mention was made of Chizire locking his door. Do we find a key in the room along with the bead?

PS Did Kraawkaw gain any insight regarding the words written near the sketch of Nethys at A16 that read: “All‑Seeing Solutions: Pay in Light, Let the Darkness Show Wisdom!”  K would keep trying (each day?) until - in meta sense - he rolls well enough that either something clicks or he would think there isn't anything nuanced to be gleaned.
