Barkvin follows Nikoletta up as she goes to tear apart the corpse of Indominous. He did not help her or hinder her. He was just there for her. He wanted to go and help bury the dead, but they could wait. He was waiting on his friend. She had been there for him, he would do no less for her. He stands quietly for the long moments until her howls calm and he approaches gently, "Aye, Niko are ye okay?" He thinks for a moment. "Shall I burn it?" He offers holding out the arm in the black sleeve and pulling off the black glove revealing a glowing human looking hand. With her permission he will cast burning hands and burn the remains, without starting a forest fire.

You don't initially see any signs of an amulet. However, as you wait for Niko's rage to subside you turn to Kirit and Aaliyah and notice...

 

Aaliyah. Kirit comes to pull you away but as you stand you notice something metallic at your feet in the grass. It's an amulet, a not unfamiliar one at that. Had Murdain dropped the one he had from Sylvania? That's careless of him. He shouldn't leave such things just laying around...

 

Kirit. Aliyah stops and looks at something at her feet. You recognize the amulet from Sylvania. Why was it here though?

"Not here... Its not here... Then where? Had to have something like it on him, he..." He saw the object in the grass as he turned around. His eyes widened as his hand dove to check the spot where he'd worn the other amulet, and realizing it was not his, he cast Mage Hand to pick it up. "...Found you."

The treasure is all stored away in these two large metal chests. They're old and rusty, full of bugs. The money inside is mostly dirty and old as well but with a good washing, it'll all be fine.

 

Hyallmyr. As you sift through it all, you find a few items of interest. There is a silk pouch, half dry rotted, with a smooth black fabric in it and a statue of a dog. The dog statue feels strange to you though as it becomes silver when you touch it and the signs has two heads.

 

There is also a metal rod of some sort with a crystal blade atop it. You recognize it as a wand of some sort.

 

Then there's the coins a d jewelery. The coins are minted with a dwarven woman's head with several braids on her head. The coins are cleanly minted, perfectly round instead it haphazardly stamped. You remember reading about a clan of dwarves that went missing about a hundred years ago, a clan that lived partially in the Vale but ourlt East. This coinage is from there, as is likely the jewelry.

 

Did he call himself Clanbreaker? It's not a name that rings a bell and likely one he gave himself.

Hjallmyr starts making rubbings of the coins, and rough sketches of the rest of the loot. He labels each one with a brief description, along with the date and location they were found. “Fascinating. This currency hasn’t been used in about a hundred years. I wonder where he got it from. He called himself Clanbreaker, so perhaps he has been hunting in these lands for that long. But then why hasn’t he spent it in all that time…” He continued to mutter to himself as he perused the rest of the items.
 

He snaps out of his focused trance for just a moment to identify the magic items. “Ah yes. Some of these are magic items. Wand of magic missiles, onyx dog, portable hole. Useful to be sure, but nothing of note from a historic perspective.”

The cleric piles the remains of the half orc/ half goliath on the rock with some sticks thrown on top. As he piles it up, he searches the pockets and the body for anything of value. "Argh, Murdain, did ye find what ye were looking for? Here take the head and do what you need, but then lets burn it also. I would hate to see this thing come back." He shudders as he thinks of it. He clears aside any loose brush or grass near by. Setting the severed head aside for Mudain, he burns the corpse. Flames of sunlight shoot out of his glowing pink hand and consume the horrible man. He chants, "Great Mother Sun Goddess, may your holy light which grants us warmth and sight, now become a consuming fire and devour the flesh of our enemy that he return to the torment of Umbra's abyss and return to this world of thy glorious light never more." He then blows on the glowing fingers of his human hand that the flames came out of and puts the black glove back on it, flexing the fingers.

Niko stared at her hands. They wouldn't stop shaking, even when Barkvin was there to comfort her. Indominus was burning behind her. He would stay dead at least..

 

"He never told me. Alan... Al'aran. My husband. He never told me what bit him. He went with other men to kill a monster in the woods, he hid the injury. A whole year he hid it, always finding a reason to go hunting with two of the other men in the village. A tradition, they called it... I was stupid enough to believe him. Men will be men, right?"

 

"Then one month... Elaria was sick. She kept crying. He lost track of the days... I woke up with him on top of me, his teeth in my collar..." she touches the bite mark. "Elaria..."

 

She tries to stand but can't so just twists around to watch the man burn. "He was the one. The one who bit him... it doesn't feel any different. I don't feel sated or avenged... just tired."

Barkvin turns away from the smouldering remains. He walks over and places a kind hand on Nikoletta's shoulder; a green hand, his own hand. "Aye, it is okay. You have been through a lot. Just rest me hearty. The emotions will come when they come." He says as though he knows what he is talking about.

"Is she gonna be okay?" Aaliyah asks as she's lead away. Murdain had grabbed his amulet back up before she'd had to tell him so she moved on.

 

Back at the dead dragonborn, she kneels next to him. "He knew my real name..." she says to those nearby and then, quietly, she adds "Baba, if you can hear me, his soul is mine now. I don't belong to you anymore. I have a new master... and we're coming."

With a measure of relief, the dwarf slipped the other amulet into a bag and tied it closed, then placed it inside another pouch on his chest. There was absolutely something about these amulets. Everyone who had one was monstrously powerful and could divert magic around them - Mari called it Wild Surges. He paused, not wanting to intrude on Nikoletta's moment. Would she find peace? Had he found peace, since the halfling's head left his shoulders? If he really thought about it, really looked at himself from the side? No... Not really. Indominus head was placed inside another pouch, bagged a few times, and attached to his waist. He'd have to ask Tel to ask it questions. Even if all it could tell him was how his mother looked like... it would still be something.

He placed his hand on the huntress' shoulder. Telling her about what happened to his own family... Might distract her or might be seen as trying to make such a dark moment about himself. Murdain concluded it was best to not mention it. But... "A revenge taken to its fullest leaves you like that. Tired, empty, poisoned with what you endured to carry it out. Trick's to force yourself to keep living after... Even if its just for other people and not because you want to." He paused. "Just... try to keep the better memories at hand, find yourself some task to focus on unrelated to it, and look for simpler things. And if you want to talk, well... I'll always be willing to listen. For now though, you need sleep."


"Burn him, Barkvin. I've taken what I needed." He nodded and walked towards Tel, pausing near Aaliyah. "We'll... all need to talk. In part, about you and your birth; I've some information. Once we've all rested, at Empyrean's Rest. This one is... probably another." He patted her on the shoulder, and moved towards Hjalmyr and Tel. "Tel... I will need your help to ask two heads some questions. This Excelsior fellow, and Indominus. More importantly, there's a girl who a dead bastard implanted with an illithid tadpole. We've extracted it, but... She's lost her memories and her powers. The Sola cleric, I dont think is powerful enough to restore her. Can I ask you to restore her mind?" He picked up a coin from the pile Hjalmyr was inspecting and frowned at it. Unfamiliar.

"I'd prefer a bit of a meal before I make that journey but I suppose I owe you. I'm afraid the magic you're calling for requires expensive components..." Tel nods in appreciation at Kirit while answering Murdains request.

 

He frowns at Aaliyah. "I suppose... if you want to talk to this one, I can do that now. The rest, I'll need some rest first."

 

He casts his magic and the dragonborn inhales sharply. "Five questions but he'll respond to anyone who speaks so... be silent if you've not something wise to say."

Kirit leaves the rest to their various feelings. He's done all the helping he can today, and it probably wasn't even that helpful.

He takes inventory of the gold and jewels, valuing each with an appraising eye, and counts out his share.

"The matching swords are nice, but unless they are magical, we should just sell them."
