Every year in SIM there are about 7 days free but you do not have access to any of the ship systems so what you can work on is limited. This can be used to start research or learn new things outside the careers. What Jake would be researching is around how to bypass his fate or destiny as it where. He has heard about the fates on this planet and wants to learn more and, if he can harness that knowledge in any way to sidestep his own fate. He hates feeling like a puppet on a string being controlled by some higher power. He wants to become the master of his own destiny. Unknown to him but what he is doing is beginning down the path to become fateless.
