Jessie scowls when her arrow bounces off the hard armor of the giant ant, after all what good was a person standing watch who couldn't finish the task and defend her peers. Nonetheless, the diminutive Halfling's colleagues are far more successful in their assault on the curious insect buoying the rogue's hope for a positive outcome of the skirmish.

However, when the massive foe turns its attention toward the tiny burglar, Jessie quickly nocks another razor-sharp arrow and then fires the deadly projectile at the attacking enemy from her fancy masterwork short bow. While continuing to use the pile of rocks for cover, Jessie quickly nocks another arrow in anticipation of the escalating conflict with the huge insect.

OOC

Jessie has a readied action on a hair trigger to attack the ant with her bow as soon as it begins to move in any direction other than out of the chamber.

Jessie Tosscobble III's AppearanceJessie is small standing at 2 foot 8 inches and weighing a mere 27 pounds. As such, the lass intentionally keeps her brown hair long to cover her halfling features, which allows the rogue to pass herself off as a small humanoid or even young human or half-elven child when convenient or necessary.

Dressed dark purple clothing, which is overlaid with attractive black leather accoutrements, Jessie keeps the paraphernalia of her 'profession' secreted upon her person, and especially the authorities, except when in use.

Her friendly blue eyes and warm, sincere smile are disarming and allow the lass to paint a picture of a young girl who is completely unintimidating by all appearances, an assumption often made by others which suits her well and which she actively cultivates.

To promote this look of youth or innocence, most of Jessie's weapons, alchemical doodads, pack, and other equipment are kept hidden under her clothing and also by her large heavy dark green cloak.

Maximilian Cornelius Spurbright   Human Wizard from Cormyr

After loosing a battlestrike into the large ant's 'face,' Maximilian reaches for his wand, only to realize that it was left down in the cave where the kobolds could have retrieved it. Stlarn it, Maximilian thinks to himself.

While thinking dark thoughts of revenge, Maximilian waits a moment to see if the others would be able to put the ant down without the need for him to use any of his spells or his alchemical products. He also tries to think of a way to use the spells he has without including his new companions in the spell's area, but doesn't see how to achieve that so far. Instead he focuses entirely on avoiding being attacked.

OOC

Standard Action -> Total Defense (AC is 15 until start of next turn)

AppearanceMaximilian is a tall, slender, bookish young man with slightly tan skin and the brown hair and eyes common among Chondathans. His clothing is simple and understated, but very well-tailored and well-made, as would befit a noble who isn't attempting to advertise wealth to others. He wears a high-collared, brown woolen overcoat over white collared shirts (often frilled collared shirts). The rest of his clothing is simple, functional, and well-tailored, and he keeps them immaculately clean with prestidigitation. He wears a gold ring with a small ruby set in it on his right middle finger.

Kethra raises the crossbow that was returned to her and cocks the weapon, loading a bolt into it. Aiming at the ant, she fires.

AppearanceTall, thin and blonde; the young 's woman's bone structure speaks to her proud Illuskan ancestry and the fierce warriors and sailors who founded her bloodline. The young scholar has eyes like the sea after a storm and a fair complexion made pale by hours and hours in ivory towers.

Scholar by nature and librarian by training; Kethra is a bibliophile, almost as passionate about books as she is about her goddess and the magic that Mystra brings to the world. Sometimes tending to be a know-it-all, the young Illuskan often has to moderate her superior-seeming attitude by being an affable person and an able negotiator.

Aeruiel is quick to place herself between the large ant and the diminutive hin, but her blow glides off the vermin's tough shell. Kethra's bolt does little more, but Rodin's arrow strikes true and with the damage done by Maximilian's battlestrike, the ant succumbs to its wounds and collapses to the ruined floor.

After a few breaths, you manage to relax. With precautions in place, you settle back into your rest and soon, the sun begins to set and the temperature, as if on cue, begins to cool rapidly. By deepnight, you know, the cold air of the north could be near lethal...

OOC

Note : All of you have lived near or in the Dales long enough to know that this time of year, without proper gear or a fire, the cold could chill you into unconsciousness if you do not find some form of shelter.

With the temperature dropping, Maximilian rifles through his backpack for the remaining pieces of his cold weather outfit, putting the woolen cap and heavy cloak on before unrolling his heavy winter blanket. He communicates to his raven that if it's cold, it can take refuge inside his coat.

"If any of you are cold, you're welcome to use my blanket. I should be quite warm in what I've got on, so long as we can get a fire going."

Thinking that he won't be much help in starting a fire, at least a small, contained campfire, Maximilian instead decides to regale his companions with a few details of the fall of Galath's Roost.

"I was lost in my own thoughts when we arrived, seeing Galath's Roost and imagining all I had read about it. It was Sembian merchants who grew weary of Galath's banditry, and they hired scores of mercenary mages, warriors, and fighting priests to bring the Roost to ruin. Those of Galath's bandits that weren't directly slain by the mercenaries were transformed into sea creatures and left to expire on the dry ground. If you happen to see centuries-old whale bones or the remains of some other sea creature around, now you'll know why."

Kethra copies Calrond in getting out the rest of her cold-weather gear and putting it on. "I have my bedroll, but no extra blanket; still, if you wanted to share I hear that can be more effective, at least according to the journals of several northern travelers. If anyone is not equipped with cold-weather gear we should endeavor to have a fire."

Turning to the tree she calls up, "Rossal, may we take fallen branches from around your tree, or perhaps you have recommendation of where we may find other sources of material to burn?"

Jessie smiles when her colleagues manage to kill the Giant Ant that was threatening the diminutive rogue, saving her before the massive creature could reach the tiny Halfling with its crushing mandibles.

After the beast is dead, Jessie Tosscobble says in a lowered voice, "Perhaps we should move this carcass out of this room. Small ants are known to track others of their kind by scent, so the trail left by this Giant Ant might lead others of its kind to us. Even if not, dead carcasses tend to draw scavengers and predators in search of an easy meal."

"Even discounting any danger, this dead body will soon start to rot which our new friend probably won't likely desire in his home turf, so we should probably move it out of the room and away from this tree," she adds. "Will anyone help me move it, please?"

Pulling out a small bit of tinder from her pack, Jessie says, "Here is some tinder to start the fire. Please keep the fire small and it and the smoke as far away from the tree as possible," Jessie adds. "I'll look for more wood after we moved the Ant."

Wood Elf, Ranger

Rodin points to the old fireplace in the southeast corner.

Try cleaning that out and putting the wood in there. It will block a lot of the light and yet let us take advantage of the heat.

Come on Jess, let' get this thing out of here. That is actually a very wise suggestion.

After he helps dispose of the body, dragging it over and dropping it into the smaller sink hole, he goes back and gets out his bedroll and winter blanket. If the others are still having issues getting a good fire going, he will help and gather extra wood to use through the night. Once that is done he bundles up near the fire in a sitting position so he faces the entrance. Placing the bow across his lap he prepares to enter his trance and keep watch.

OOC

Elven Lowlight vision, so he can see 40' a if full lit rather than the normal 20 of the torch.

Will take 10 on Spot and Listen checks for a total of 15 each when not in combat.

It gets a +3 bonus if any of those are applied to Drow or large spiders.

AppearanceRodin stands at 6 feet tall and appears a bit more muscular than the average elf. His skin has a light brownish tan look to it. His hair is brown with streaks of copper highlights through it and hangs down to just touch his shoulders. It normally has a bit of a wild windblown look to it. His eyes are a medium green which reminds most people of the color of leaves. He wears studded leather armor that has been dyed a camouflage pattern of browns and greens. His cloak is held closed by a brooch the shape of a silver arrow with green fletching. Aside from his dagger on his belt, the only weapon he carries is his longbow, which looks a bit thicker and sturdier than most bows.

As you prepare for the night and retrieve winter worthy equipment, Jesse and Rodin drag the large ant carcass towards the small hole in the floor of the ruin. Pushing it proves easier, but in getting close enough to the crumbling floor to push the carcass over the edge, Rodin discovers the hard way that the sinkhole's edges are dangerously unstable. Part of the lip beneath his feet breaks loose!

Back with the others, Kethra feels the now somewhat less uncomfortable sensation of Rossal thoughts impressed upon her mind. He projects some agitation, but no anger or aggression.

Kethra's Mind

"Wood all around! No flame in under Rossal home, Rossal home no food for flame!"

Kethra smiles continuing to speak to the tree, "I promise that we won't hurt your tree, Rossal, one of my friends spotted an old fireplace here. If the chimney draws that would work well, so I'll check it out. Thank you for allowing us to shelter under your home; you are the most hospitable creature I have had the good fortune to meet. Would you like some more dried fruit or meat from my rations? I'm sorry I don't have anything else in my pack."

Kethra goes to the fireplace and lights a small twig to check if the fireplace draws smoke up, if so she will begin to gather fallen wood to stack carefully in the fireplace as well as to gather for feeding it all night.

As the rest of the party prepare for the night, Jesse and Rodin drag the Giant Ant carcass out of the room with the Oak Tree toward the small sinkhole, which is the home of the giant bees and nasty kobold tribe that nearly killed the party. Even though the dead insect was fairly heavy, working together the pair made the task much less difficult.

Just after pushing the dead Ant into the sinkhole, suddenly the unstable edge of the pit gives away under Rodin's anchor foot, raining gravel and debris down into the bottom of the hole as the Ranger attempts to catch himself before going over the edge and falling into the small crater below.

Even though the burglar is tiny and not very strong, Jessie's reflexes are exceptional as the diminutive Halfling reaches out in the flash of an eye with her right hand and, as she plants her feet and leans away from the hole, the rogue grasps Rodin's arm and pulls him hard back off the edge barely helping him to avoid a near plunge on to the rocks below!

Silently smiling at her colleague with an ear-to-ear grin, the thief remains as quiet as possible to avoid alerting any possible threats in the area and whispers, "Whew, close one there Rody! Thought we had lost ya for a minute!"

"Come on my friend, let's grab an armful of wood for the night's fire and get back before any of this Ant's buddies show up or worse. Besides, I'm starved," she adds before quietly moving to complete the task and get back to the relative safety of the group.

Thank you for the assist. Greatly appreciated. But please don't ever call me Rody again. It is Rodin.

He grins a bit as he says it, but you are pretty sure he is serious.

He helps grab up a bunch of loose branches to feed the fire on his way back to the camp. Once there he checks the fire that has been made and the area around it to make sure there is no chance of the fire spreading.
