Colin Posted May 16, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 16, 2022 There are two location options for the navigation menu in games, top and sidebar. We’d like to hear from folks which they prefer! Butchern Posted May 16, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 16, 2022 I like top better, but until we get a fixed-width theme, side causes much less eye strain and window resizing. I voted top.
Neopopulas Posted May 16, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 16, 2022 I voted side bar, because i think it looks nice and clean but i DO have a question. One of the good things about the sidebar is that it can be very long if it needs to be. What happens if the top bar is very long, like if you had 20 pages there, does it scroll, or does it compress? Witchslasher Posted May 17, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 17, 2022 I voted side because it's closer to OG myth-weavers, so feels a little more like home 🙂
PigLickJF Posted May 17, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 17, 2022 (edited) I voted sidebar as well, and I echo Neo's question - what happens to the top bar if there are too many subforums to fit? I think no matter the answer, the sidebar will be cleaner and easier so it wouldn't change my vote, but I'm curious. Colin Posted May 17, 2022 Author Clone Share Posted May 17, 2022 I completely missed that question, my apologies! @Neopopulas @PigLickJF I genuinely don’t know, it hasn’t been tested yet! I can test it a bit later tonight most likely, so long as I remember.
Eric Posted May 17, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 17, 2022 The top bar will split onto multiple lines on overflow.
Colin Posted May 17, 2022 Author Clone Share Posted May 17, 2022 Or Eric can tackle it first! 😄
PigLickJF Posted May 17, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 17, 2022 Thanks Eric and Colin. I'd still like to see an example, but like I said for me I think the sidebar will always be the cleaner/more convenient format (on desktop at least, mobile's a different matter, but I haven't even checked out the site on mobile yet). Another question, would it be possible for that to be a user-specific setting? Or is that too much work/trouble on the back end? PigLick

PigLickJF Posted May 17, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 17, 2022 Thanks Buchern! Yep, I definitely think I'd prefer the sidebar. Maybe it's just the nitpicky/OCD tendencies in me, but having those tabs up there with different widths and no borders/delineation just seems a bit jumbled and messy to me, plus screens have way more width than height to work with, so I'd rather have stuff like that on the side rather than have to scroll past it on every single subforum. Zhuub Posted May 18, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 18, 2022 I was going to mention being worried about scrolling past a really long menu in mobile, but right now it has a little drop down menu on mobile that is nice. I think the sidebar nav will work pretty well!
PigLickJF Posted May 22, 2022 Clone Share Posted May 22, 2022 By request... It would be great if we could we also have an "unread posts" indicator for each "forum" in the nav menu.
Colin Posted May 23, 2022 Author Clone Share Posted May 23, 2022 Interest seems to be overwhelmingly in favor of the side nav bar, so making that change for the moment!
Colin Posted May 23, 2022 Author Clone Share Posted May 23, 2022 Update: This decision has been reversed, because it takes up a large amount of screen real estate even when viewing individual threads.
