Modri questions whether Meri's assessment is right and if they couldn't take the group. Now is not the time to argue though. Plenty of time for that after. No, now's the time to start moving.

"Pity, but nothing to be done about it. Well, one thing to be done." Modri pulls out his hunting trap, the one he nearly gambled away back at Vogler. "Just to slow them down."

War. Time to pull out all the tricks.

In his rush, it's subtlety leaves much to be desired...

Coltan watches the discussion. He does not know what to think about Mery's attempt at suicide and was glad the prince gave her an out and good information. They needed to return to Vogler. He was not about to run away from a village that he just saved. Reorx wants him here. "Ten? Aye Modri, good idea. Get at least one of them."

"Let me help you cover that trap." The smith gathers some brush.

Hit: 1d6 + 2 slashing damage.

Dagger (light, thrown). Melee & Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, ranged 20/60 ft., one target.
Hit: 1d4 + 2 piercing damage.

Spell-casting: +5 or DC 13 | 1st 4/4 | 2nd 2/2

Cantrips

  1. Sacred Flame (V, S). Spell Attack: Dex DC 13, ranged 60 ft., one target.  Fail: 1d8 radiant damage.
  2. Word of Radiance (V, M). Spell Attack: Con DC 13, ranged 5 ft., each creature of your choice. Fail: 1d6 radiant damage.
  3. Light (V,M).  You touch one object that is no larger than 10 feet in any dimension. Until the spell ends, the object sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet. The light can be colored as you like. Completely covering the object with something opaque blocks the light. The spell ends if you cast it again or dismiss it as an action.  If you target an object held or worn by a hostile creature, that creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw to avoid the spell.

1st level spells prepared

  • Identify (V,S,M) Ritual. You choose one object that you must touch throughout the casting of the spell. If it is a magic item or some other magic-imbued object, you learn its properties and how to use them, whether it requires attunement to use, and how many charges it has, if any. You learn whether any spells are affecting the item and what they are. If the item was created by a spell, you learn which spell created it. If you instead touch a creature throughout the casting, you learn what spells, if any, are currently affecting it.
  • Searing Smite (V). The next time you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack during the spell's duration, your weapon flares with white-hot intensity, and the attack deals an extra 1d6 fire damage to the target and causes the target to ignite in flames. At the start of each of its turns until the spell ends, the target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 1d6 fire damage. On a successful save, the spell ends. If the target or a creature within 5 feet of it uses an action to put out the flames, or if some other effect douses the flames (such as the target being submerged in water), the spell ends.
  1. Bless (V,S,M).  You bless up to three creatures of your choice within 30 ft. Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw.  Concentration up to 1 minute.
  2. Cure Wounds (V,S).  A creature you touch regains a number of hit points equal to 1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.
  3. Detect Magic (V,S) Ritual. For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.  The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.  Concentration up to 10 minutes.
  4. Healing Word (V) Bonus.  A creature of your choice that you can see within range regains hit points equal to 1d4 + your spellcasting ability modifier. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.
  5. Guiding Bolt (V,S).  Make a ranged spell attack against the target within 120 feet. On a hit, the target takes 4d6 radiant damage, and the next attack roll made against this target before the end of your next turn has advantage

2nd-Level Spells Prepared

  • Heat Metal (V,S,M) Concentration. Choose a manufactured metal object, such as a metal weapon or a suit of heavy or medium metal armor, that you can see within range. You cause the object to glow red-hot. Any creature in physical contact with the object takes 2d8 fire damage when you cast the spell. Until the spell ends, you can use a bonus action on each of your subsequent turns to cause this damage again. If a creature is holding or wearing the object and takes the damage from it, the creature must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or drop the object if it can. If it doesn't drop the object, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks until the start of your next turn.
  • Magic Weapon (V,S) Concentration. You touch a nonmagical weapon. Until the spell ends, that weapon becomes a magic weapon with a +1 bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls.
  • 6. Spiritual Weapon (V,S) Bonus. When you cast the spell, you can make a melee spell attack against a creature within 5 feet of the weapon. On a hit, the target takes force damage equal to 1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. As a bonus action on your turn, you can move the weapon up to 20 feet and repeat the attack against a creature within 5 feet of it.

Channel Divinity: 1/1 short rest

Turn Undead.  Expend a use of your Channel Divinity as an action to make each undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you to make a Wisdom DC 13. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage.

Harness Divine Power.  As a bonus action, expend a use of your Channel Divinity to regain one expended spell slot, the level of which can be no higher than half your proficiency bonus (rounded up).

Artisan's Blessing. You conduct an hour-long ritual that crafts a nonmagical item that must include some metal: a simple or martial weapon, a suit of armor, ten pieces of ammunition, a set of tools, or another metal object (see chapter 5, "Equipment," in the Player's Handbook for examples of these items). The creation is completed at the end of the hour, coalescing in an unoccupied space of your choice on a surface within 5 feet of you.  The thing you create can be something that is worth no more than 100 gp. As part of this ritual, you must lay out metal, which can include coins, with a value equal to the creation. The metal irretrievably coalesces and transforms into the creation at the ritual's end, magically forming even nonmetal parts of the creation. The ritual can create a duplicate of a nonmagical item that contains metal, such as a key, if you possess the original during the ritual.

DR3 vs nonmagical bludgeoning, slashing, piercing

My words,  | My thoughts,’  | My actions . . .

Artanis too looks horrified at Mery's assessment of her disposability. Of course, he would not stand in the way of a noble sacrifice, but such should not be pursued based on merits such as least missed. He was about to interrupt to point out that such historical accounts required the survival of their author to make it to the library, when Kai offers the eyes of the Osprey, no simple bird it seems. He watches anxiously as it takes off, quickly circling to a dot in his vision.

As the osprey's "report" turns the usually jovial elf grim, Artanis draws and grips his sword. For the short period he had known Kai, the elf rarely was without a smile. "As bad as we imagined then, and more of Takhsis' monsters." He wheels his horse about, and readies to leave as the two dwarves lay their simple trap.

Once back at town, and with reports made, Artanis thanks the Mayor for his honest assessment of the town's capabilities the night before. "Though costly, it is your militia's victory that led us to now, denying this army their surprise. I fully understand the town has had its fill of fighting - as it should be. The task now rests with those who have chosen to shield the common folk of the world." He hefts the Greenshield for emphasis, with a slight smile playing on his lips.

"Hopefully however we will not have to fight them at all for now, though I shall be ready if we do. Tell me Mayor, is Lord Barakis likely to offer shelter to the townsfolk if needed? That would be his duty as a noble. Otherwise we may have to fortify the old garrison. Neither would stand against the whole army, but hopefully their sights are elsewhere."

FeatsWar CasterPrerequisite: The ability to cast at least one spell
You have practiced casting Spells in the midst of Combat, learning Techniques that grant you the following benefits:
You have advantage on Constitution Saving Throws that you make to maintain your Concentration on a spell when you take damage.
You can perform the somatic Components of Spells even when you have Weapons or a Shield in one or both hands.
When a Hostile creature’s Movement provokes an opportunity Attack from you, you can use your Reaction to Cast a Spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity Attack. The spell must have a Casting Time of 1 Action and must target only that creature.

 | FeaturesRitual CastingYou can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell in your spellbook. You don’t need to have the spell prepared.
Arcane RecoverYou have learned to regain some of your magical energy by studying your spellbook. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your wizard level (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 6th level or higher. For example, if you’re a 4th-level wizard, you can recover up to two levels worth of spell slots. You can recover either a 2nd-level spell slot or two 1st-level spell slots.
BladesongYou can invoke an elven magic called the Bladesong, provided that you aren't wearing medium or heavy armor or using a shield. It graces you with supernatural speed, agility, and focus. You can use a bonus action to start the Bladesong, which lasts for 1 minute. It ends early if you are incapacitated, if you don medium or heavy armor or a shield, or if you use two hands to make an attack with a weapon. You can also dismiss the Bladesong at any time (no action required). While your Bladesong is active, you gain the following benefits: You gain a bonus to your AC equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1). Your walking speed increases by 10 feet. You have advantage on Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks. You gain a bonus to any Constitution saving throw you make to maintain your concentration on a spell. The bonus equals your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1). You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses of it when you finish a long rest.

It can move across uneven terrain, up or down stairs, slopes and the like, but it can’t cross an elevation change of 10 feet or more. For example, the disk can’t move across a 10-foot-deep pit, nor could it leave such a pit if it was created at the bottom. Shadow Blade2nd Level Illusion
Casting Time: 1 Bonus Action
Range: Self
Target: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: ConcentrationUp to 1 minute/em>
Classes: Sorcerer, Wizard
Description: You weave together threads of shadow to create a sword of solidified gloom in your hand. This magic sword lasts until the spell ends. It counts as a simple melee weapon with which you are proficient. It deals 2d8 psychic damage on a hit and has the finesse, light, and thrown properties (range 20/60). In addition, when you use the sword to attack a target that is in dim light or darkness, you make the attack roll with advantage.
If you drop the weapon or throw it, it dissipates at the end of the turn. Thereafter, while the spell persists, you can use a bonus action to cause the sword to reappear in your hand.
At Higher Levels When you cast this spell using a 3rd- or 4th-level spell slot, the damage increases to 3d8. When you cast it using a 5th- or 6th-level spell slot, the damage increases to 4d8. When you cast it using a spell slot of 7th level or higher, the damage increases to 5d8.

Decimus is woefully unlearned about trapmaking, so he stays silent as he watches Modri and Coltan attempt to set up a trap in their wake, wondering if it was really supposed to look like that. Instead of opening his mouth and proving himself a fool, he lets them get along with it, musing over the revelations that Kalasääski had revealed to them. Impressed as he was with the bird, he would have to wait until they were in a safer position to speak with the Sea Elf about it. A troupe was moving in on their position, even if Mery truly wanted to die on her hill of sneaking into the camp, there was not enough time to prepare correctly, and they would be sending her in, guaranteed to fail. Artanis wisely takes the lead of the group on their travel back to the town, waylaid with information that could wipe Vogler off of the face of the planet. Hunni mentions and evacuation again, and he nods his head in agreement.

"Wise words... We should figure out how to get word to Kalaman as quickly as possible as well... Raising an army against Takhsis is in their best interest..."

Kalaman had been stuck in the back of his mind throughout their entire time in Vogler, as Hunni and he still needed to meet with this Whyam of the Black Cloaks. The mages would likely be an important part of the upcoming war, so getting connected as soon as possible was quickly moving up his list of priorities.

Mery shoots Kai a bemused look when he speaks of seeing her as a friend, but she doesn't say anything, the results of Kalasääski's patrol seeming more important in her mind. She also notes Artanis' horrified look, but since the knight doesn't speak his mind about the cause of the look, she assumes he is thinking about this army descending on Vogler.

She wants to do something that makes a difference, not just for Vogler, but for the side of good against the forces of Takhisis and her evil forces. If she can never have love, maybe she can at least have meaning. But maybe the most meaningful thing wasn't to try to sneak into such a large camp. She wasn't skilled enough or prepared enough to find the commander or deal with whatever protections he or she might have in place. And really, it was the commander's intelligence they needed. And, it seemed likely they'd learn this army's goals soon enough, either first-hand, or through other reports. But she would be on the lookout for something meaningful she could do. Her willingness to give her life and die for a worthy cause years before old age had the chance to set in was one thing the bloody universe couldn't take away from her. It made her feel...well, dangerous. An enemy who accepted death as a possible outcome to the fight could give everything, and that made them unpredictable. She rather liked the idea of being unpredictable and dangerous.

As she watches Coltan and Modri work on setting a trap, something tickles at the back of her mind, although she isn't sure where she knows the thing from. It's certainly not something she knows well.

"Do you see how well-trod this area is and how there's a path? I don't know about you, but it's easy enough for me to imagine this being a road scouts use. Which I guess means we should get back to Vogler sooner rather than later. The Mayor will need lead time for whatever she decides to do about this army."

Yalme Ser Becklin Uth Viharin Darrett Highwater,
Ser Becklin’s Squire
Ridomir “Cudgel” Ironsmile Mayor Raven Uth Vogler

Reconnaissance Mission

Coltan and Modri clumsily, but hastily, lay out their trap—if anything, it will likely serve, at best, as a distraction when found, but both of you surmise that if someone gets caught in it, then they must have been supremely unobservant.

You start back down the mountain—hill, really—remembering well your path and retracing your steps back to Vogler. Especially easy to find are the large “slitherprints”, along with your footprints of a giant constrictor snake that Hunni rode much of the way.

You’re far enough away that you’re confident you can evade discovery, but close enough to hear a sudden yelp through the trees a few hundred feet in the direction from whence you just came—where you’d laid a trap.

Though Mery ultimately did not put her understanding of Draconic to any use on a reconnaissance mission, she is privy to shouts of “Who the **** set this trap here?!”, “Did one of the village hunters come all the way up here? I thought we’d killed the few that got this far?”, “Idiot! If they got to this point, they’ve seen the camp!”, “Oh . . . wait, should we sound the alarm?”, and “Of course we should sound the alarm! Blow the ****ing horn!”

Mery, sadly barely has time to open her mouth and warn the rest of the party when everyone suddenly hears a bugle call of toooooot-toooooot-toot, a pause, and another toooooot-toooooot-toot.

You make haste down the hill and back to Vogler in record time—90 minutes . . . well, this time, you didn’t need to spend an entire 3rd hour searching for the trail of Gragonis’s benefactors—still, the trip to that location, and then the trip from there to the overlook was two hours in and of itself—and you got back in three-quarters of that time.

You enter the village and on your way to the Brass Crab, you see several militia men and women frog-marching a band of mercenaries through the pentagonal town square where you would turn towards the tavern. You all receive heartfelt salutes from the militia soldiers before they roughly force their tied captives to continue walking towards the keep.

When you rush into the Brass Crab, Yalme greets you and says how happy she is that you all made it back safely. She says Mayor Raven is in one of the inn’s rooms-cum-command and control center. Two guards are stationed at the door. They’d be intimidating to the common person trying to snoop or speak to the mayor uninvited, but these remnants of the village’s militia not only have nothing on your hardened and bloodied troupe, but look upon you with awe.

“Are you . . . are you the heroes of High Hill?” one of them asks. “I was stuck here in Vogler on patrol . . .” he affects an angry, frustrated look, “If . . . If only I could have been there . . . been there to help! Surely I could have saved me buddy, Jefflan!” He slams his fist into the door post. “Now he’s just another body over in the pile, waiting to be buried . . . his wife . . . his kids . . .” The guard slumps, hiding his face in his knees.

Ser Becklin opens the door and pokes her head out. “What’s going on out he—” then she sees you. “Oh! The mayor is waiting for you! Come in. Cudgel is here as well. Good timing. She was just about to give her report. Then we’ll hear yours.”

Room 101—Command & Control Center

Mayor Raven is no longer dressed in the casual, festival attire she’d worn yesterday and last night. She now has a much more expensive set of officious-looking garments and accessories that you might guess are indicators of her office of mayor and rank of commander in chief of the Vogler militia. Along with her, Ser Becklin, and Cudgel, there are a few other people. They look similarly officious, old or middle-aged at best, and busy themselves with setting out maps of the area and organizing documents—some sorting through piles of parchment to find some figure or another, and others crossing names off a long list of names—likely who’s in the militia . . . and who’s died.

spacer.png   Another man stands tall and at ease—Ser Artanis, you recognize the stance as the “at ease” pose Knights are afforded when not forced to stand “at attention”—not some slouching, relaxed pose. However, he’s dressed in the same clothes of the mercenaries you fought—and the same clothes Cudgel wears—and he’s smoking a pipe.

“Great! You’re here!” Cudgel says. “Ser Artanis, Mery, Coltan, Merituuli, Modri, and Hunni, I’d like you to meet my second-in-command, Mr. Jeyev Veldrews. Mr. Veldrews, these are the ‘Heroes of High Hill’ I mentioned—that everyone in town keeps crowing about.”

The man is professional, if a little gruff in his presentation. He holds out a hand and shakes all of your hands. Artanis, if you suspected anything at first, it is all but confirmed when his firm handshake is swift and efficient and exactly in the same manner as you’ve been taught. He then returns to his “at ease” pose. It’s not lost on you that Darrett adopts the same pose next to, if a little behind his liege, Ser Becklin.

“It’s an honor to meet you all,” he says. “Please call me ‘Jeyev’—you’ve all certainly earned that right.”

Cudgel’s Report

She believes Jeyev and her remaining troops are loyal to her—they could have easily overpowered her if they weren’t.

On her return, Cudgel found Jeyev and other loyal mercenaries had heard of the events at High Hill. They had restrained several soldiers loyal to Gragonis but who didn’t have orders to participate in the reenactment.

During the night, Jeyev’s scouts came across a large military force to the northwest of the village, much too large and organized to be a mere mercenary band. If any of you asks if they saw red tents, they can only say that they saw tents, but in the moonlight, it just appeared as dark grey. However, if you describe the valley, the paths, etc, they’ll confirm that this is the same army the you likely spotted, and Jeyev’s scouts can confirm everything else you saw, such as the mix of humans and lizard-like hooded figures.

Mayor Raven is shocked by the report about the enemy camp. She wants to know more about the nature and disposition of this force, and she’s aware Vogler can’t defend itself against anything more than a few raiders. She’s eager to hear advice from you all and others about how to address this potential threat.

At the outset, Raven is inclined to draft a letter to the commander of the camp to declare Vogler’s neutrality in all conflicts, ask the mysterious army’s intentions, and welcome them to meet with the mayor.

Once back at town, and with reports made, Artanis thanks the Mayor for his honest assessment of the town’s capabilities the night before. “Though costly, it is your militia’s victory that led us to now, denying this army their surprise. I fully understand the town has had its fill of fighting - as it should be. The task now rests with those who have chosen to shield the common folk of the world” He hefts the Greenshield for emphasis, with a slight smile playing on his lips.

“Hopefully however we will not have to fight them at all for now, though I shall be ready if we do. Tell me Mayor, is Lord Barakis likely to offer shelter to the townsfolk if needed? That would be his duty as a noble. Otherwise we may have to fortify the old garrison. Neither would stand against the whole army, but hopefully their sights are elsewhere”

“Lord Bakaris is holed up in his palatial villa on the west side of town. He’s got his guards patrolling it in force, but who knows what he might do . . . Either way, you’ve seen his son . . . the baron is only more polite as he stabs you in the gut. His shitstain of a son is still cowardly enough to try to stab you in the back, but acts the drunken imbecile in public. Either way, I thank you for your deeds and your continued support.”

Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Game McHolyGrail IIIModri

Reconnaissance

At first Modri is ready to declare victory as the shouts begin, thinking the surely they must've stepped on it and the yelling is dealing with their unfortunate situation. As they continue and the horn is blown, the Dwarf realizes more likely that they just spotted it.

"Lucky guess." He mutters the words understanding he's been defeated. He's lost this battle, thankfully there'll be more to come to make up for it.

Room 101

Modri's usually not been one to speak strategy, but this time he can't help himself but to step up. "With all due respect, Mayor, this army's already spat on your neutrality. I mean, it would take a very specific kind of person to both raid a town with hired mercenaries when it least expects, and then also have a change of heart because the town wants to stay out of it. We fought these dragon-men, and they literally explode into poisonous gas upon death. That is not the kind of trick for a noble army that plays nicely. That's the kind of pains-in-the-arse who'll intentionally send their men to die just to hurt the other side."

It's not the Modri is necessarily eager for a large-scale battle, but at least in his mind he can't see this army being reasoned with... at least not from what he's seen.

"Now, as to our noble problem, it may not surprise most of you that I'm out of my depth there, never had much need for rich folk. I say just hand me one of the blunted pretend weapons from before and I can knock around their men enough that they give up and their masters can't say no to helping. Or you know, say we'll pay whatever silly price they want, and then don't when the payment's due. Or pay it if you really want to, but I wouldn't."

Recon Mission

When the group arrives back at the Brass Crab, Mery takes a few minutes to speak to the man who lost his friend Jefflan. "I am very sorry for your loss, but there is something yet that you might be able to do. I am going to recommend to the Mayor that she evacuate Vogler. The army that is nearby is very large and I do not believe they can be reasoned with. You can't do anything to bring your friend back, but you might yet be able to help save his wife and children as well as the rest of Vogler from that army. You can wait for the Mayor's command if you wish, but if I were you and I had a boat, I'd set about getting it ready to take out of here, just in case."

She turns to head into the room where the Mayor is when another thought comes to her. Turning her head back over her shoulder, she adds, "I know what it's like to have events in the past create a present and a future I am not particularly fond of. If things were less dire, I'd ask you to tell me about Jefflan, but there is simply not time. When I am overly focused on the past, I can either neglect things I need to be doing in the present, or else miss out on good things in the present. The bottom line is, the patrol you were on was a good thing, and you had no way of knowing what would happen. Try not to blame yourself, and remember, you are still needed."

Control Room

When Mery walks into the control room and is introduced to Jeyev, she takes his hand and shakes it, but then turns to study the man, trying to discern whether he's all he seems and is actually loyal to Cudgel. She hopes she's just suffering from a case of paranoia caused by her past, but it seems to her that they can't afford to trust anyone blindly.

Cudgel's Report

After Modri speaks, Mery is quick to add her own piece. "Mayor, I would have to agree with my Dwarven comrade, Modri. The army of a good nation or deity might respect your desire for neutrality, but not the army of an evil deity. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest fighting if I thought a battle could be won, but I believe Vogler would be better served if you evacuate your people to someplace where there is a contingent of Solamnia's army, which by the way, was suggested first by Hunni here on the way back here." She gestures at the Gully Dwarf. "It can be painful to leave your home behind, but homes and villages can be rebuilt - lost lives cannot be restored. I assume Ser Becklin would have the best idea about where to send your people." She gives the knight a nod. Then, gesturing toward the wizard, she says, "And Decimus suggested that Kalaman should be notified, and that is a good idea as well."

"I cannot speak for my companions, but I personally am willing to help with any task that helps to achieve any of the aims I've just suggested."

Recon Mission

During the trip back, Hunni is more subdued. Tense. She honestly looks likely to run at any moment. Although she relaxes a bit when they get back to town, she still seems more determined than anything else. "Yeah. What Mery said," the gully dwarf comments, "Grab people you love. Run like crazy."

Room 101

In the control room with the others, Hunni seems more than a bit exasperated at the talk of remaining, as though walls and guards can keep the village safe from the army that seems to be on the way. ""Modri is right. Mery is right. They already attacked. They aren't looking to talk, or they would have talked." She reverts back to her old way of speaking, as her frustration mounts.

"Talls stupid. Run. Run. Like. Crazy," she insists, trying to emote the importance of what she is saying, trying to impart her gully dwarf wisdom on the foolish humans around her.

Coltan replies to Modri, "Worth a try." He hustles back to Vogler with his companions wondering how they would defeat an army.

After Mery replies to the guard, the dwarf adds, "Reorx always gives a chance. We have more to do."

Room 101 & Report

"Mayor. Jeyev." The smith replies with a nod at the introduction. After the report, he offers, "Can the entire population shelter at Bakaris? Or do we need the old garrison, too? Think of the army like a flood and the fortifications as high ground. We need to secure the population and try to stay out of the army's way. Vogler does not seem like a strategic position, so perhaps the army will pass."

"The Queen of Darkness seeks to dominate, but She needs subjects to dominate. We need to shelter from the storm and signal as many allies as possible: the knights, the order, anyone."

“My words” | ‘My thoughts’  | My actions . . .

Reconnaissance

Though he doesn't understand the language, from the shouting and yelp it seemed as though the patrol had found the trap Modri had set up. His small smirk of satisfaction shifts quickly when a warning horn is blown. Looking to the others, he simply says, "Time to go," and continues on the path back to Vogler at a more hurried pace, his osprey companion perched on his shoulder.

On returning to the Brass Crab and making their way up to the impromptu command center, the grieving guard gives Merituuli a moment of pause. He is about to say something, but Mery covers his thoughts on the matter well enough. Instead, he simply places a hand on the guard's shoulder and solemnly nods before following the others into the room.

Command Center

Merituuli is relieved to see that Cudgel returned safely, and with an ally in her ranks to boot. Shaking his hand, Merituuli says to the mercenary second-in-command, "A pleasure, Jeyev. Thank you for joining us, and for remaining loyal in these dark times."

He finds himself agreeing with his companions' responses to Mayor Raven's initial plans. "All due respect, Mayor Raven, but I don't think this army is going to care about a letter of neutrality. They have the power of Takhisis behind them. Either they ignore Vogler, or they trample through it. I think the others have the right of it - either evacuate or hole up somewhere defendable and safe. If Lord Bakaris will not help, then how defendable is Thornwall Keep? I know there was that Gnomeflinger contraption at the top... could we get the villagers there for now?"

At 5th level, the melee attack deals an extra 1d8 thunder damage to the target on a hit, and the damage the target takes for moving increases to 2d8. Recon

Decimus does not need to understand Draconic to hear the tone of the shouting, the trap had gone off, whether or not someone or something had been in it was irrelevant, but as the sounds of the horns rose into the air, he kept pace with the rest of the group as they hasten their pace to return to Vogler. Their return is hailed, but the Wizard pulls his hat further down his face, hiding himself from the world around him, feeling out of place. The guard and his grief remind him further of his failures as a White Cloak, and he remains silent as they move past him, feeling as though everything has been said, and that he would simply ruin the moment.

Command Center

As Cudgel beckons them and introduces them to another knight, Decimus listens idly, distracted by his guilt and not feeling as though there is anything left to contribute until Mery mentions his name followed by Kalaman. The others debate the efficacy of the walls of the Keep, but the Bladesinger cannot help but feel Hunni is right yet again.

"Taking Vogler would be an act of terror... Whether or not the town is strategic, if it and it's people fall, then despair grows. I failed to uphold my vows once, I cannot bear to do it again, I strongly believe evacuation should be of highest priority. Sending envoys to other kingdoms can only help unite us in the face of such evil..."

Lord Bakaris Uth Estide Bakaris “the Younger”,
Lord Bakaris’s Son

Room 101—Command & Control Center

Mayor Raven listens intently to each of you. “Thank you. You’ve given me much to consider,” she says. “Loathe as I am to evacuate, you all make very good points.”

Ser Becklin chimes in. “I’m deeply concerned. I’ve heard rumors of strange armies in the east, and now there’s a strange army close to my home. As the most experienced military leader in the room, I expect the worst, but I don’t want to panic anyone.”

Cudgel adds, “I feel responsible for everything at High Hill. I will give the village the complete support of the Ironclad Regiment. I hope for a peaceful resolution with this mysterious army, but one backed by my mercenaries’ spears.”

Mayor Raven Uth Vogler says, “I will do anything to keep my people safe. However, I want more information before acting.”

Lord Bakaris Uth Estide   Right then, a very pompously, and colorfully dressed man barges into the room without knocking, ceremony, nor greeting. He is flanked by two tall, stocky, thuggish looking men in full plate armor. They have swords at their sides and shields before them.

The man immediately lays into Mayor Raven. “Raven, what are you doing!? Why was I not consulted? What is all this going on in my town? Who are all these people? Why are they being allowed into top secret military meetings? Why is that man blue?! Who’s that short lady with the man behind her? Becky! Explain yourself!” he prattles on.

Mayor Raven grits her teeth and waits for his tirade to end. Lord Bakaris, you were not invited because you were holed up in Westside House. As for your town—you will remember that this town and my family’s name is the same, not yours. You merely reside here, Baron.”

“I may be required by law to defer to you, Lord Bakaris,” Ser Becklin says with seeming infinite patience, “but you are similarly required to use my title. I don’t make the rules. You may refer to me as Ser Becklin—and woe betide your house if you call me ‘Becky’, again.”

The thugs behind Bakaris place their hands on their sword hilts, but Ser Becklin says, “And inform your bodyguards that if they remove those swords from those sheaths, then they have quite literally signed their own death warrants for raising a weapon to a knight of the realm. Normally I would practice mercy, but a Knight I am, nonetheless. This is an emergency situation, so I shan’t tolerate this behavior. They. Have. Already. Stood. Down.”

The two thugs—and Lord Bakaris gulp. He waves his hand and the two thugs back out of the room and stand at attention out in the common room.

“Y-yes . . . well, S-Ser Becklin . . . Mayor Raven . . .” Lord Bakaris says, much more reasonably, “What of the mercenary band that I heard committed a massacre? Has someone parlayed with them? Will you send out a scouting party to look for anything else amiss?”

“That would be Ms. Ironsmile, here,” the Mayor says, rolling her eyes and pointing to Cudgel. “She’s the commander of her mercenary company, the Ironclad Regiment. And this is her Lieutenant, Mr. Veldrews. The traitors amongst them have been killed or captured, already, and those still loyal to Ms. Ironsmile are prepared to help where they can. That’s what we were discussing with Ms. Ironsmile and Mr. Veldrews.”

“As for these ladies and gentlemen,” the Mayor then points to you all. “They are the heroes of High Hill. They put the traitors that massacred our people to sword and won the day. Furthermore, they’ve already returned from scouting and have discovered a large army encamped in the valley to the northwest.”

“W-well . . . excellent!” Lord Bakaris says. “I’ll have to pin some medals on them, or something! Now, what are we doing about this army? Are we going to fortify our walls? We can use that castle of yours Be . . . Ser Becklin. Yes. Thornwall Keep! We’ll hunker down in there!”

“Lord Bakaris,” Ser Becklin says with a dangerous edge to her voice, “Thornwall Keep is not big enough to house the entire town. We’ve got to evacuate, as my friends here have suggested. Mayor Raven agrees.”

   “Reluctantly,” Mayor Raven says.

“Wh-what?!” Lord Bakaris balks. “I can’t move my entire household on such short notice!? How am I supposed to pack?!”

“I fear these Red Dragon Army soldiers are part of that greater force,” Ser Becklin says. “I’ve lived in Vogler for decades and know its people aren’t soldiers. They’d need weeks of training and a hundred more professional soldiers to stand a chance in any conflict. I agree with Mery and the rest of my friends: we should be readying the villagers to evacuate at a moment’s notice in case other plans fail. Evacuees can follow the river to safety in Kalaman.”

A knock is heard and a village guard enters, saluting to Mayor Raven and Ser Becklin before whispering to her. She nods and the guard takes his leave.

“There’s a messenger from that army waiting at the River Gate,” the Mayor says. “Shall we go see what they have to say?”

OOC

Sorry to those of you who didn’t get a chance to say anything, yet. You may absolutely add your two copper pieces in. If you wish to say something before Bakaris’s interruption, make a heading “Before Bakaris’s Interruption” and then another heading for anything you want to say “After Bakaris’s Interruption”.

Those of you who have already said something, you are, by default, responding after Bakaris’s interruption, so you don’t need any such headings, unless you would like to interject anything else prior to the interruption—which of course, you may (just use the headings).

Coltan fails his attempt to stop from rolling his eyes while the so-called lord speaks. Nobility should clearly not be decided by birth. He keeps his mouth shut, because he has nothing good to add to the conversation.

When Becklin reminds them about Thornwall Keep, the smith reflects on their visit wondering how defensible the keep would be for how many townsfolk.

Then, the guard arrives. "I would represent Reorx to parlay with that army." He ignites his holy hammer in blue flames.

Cantrips
