The 3rd Day of the Campaign - Late Morning

Attacking the Dragon Army Soldiers

Round II Concluded

Artanis is finally able to climb halfway up the cliff side.

Mery casts the heat metal spell on DAS 1.

Decimus tries to cast the booming blade spell at DAS 3, but misses, then he climbs almost the rest of the way up the cliff face.

With an impressive combination, Coltan slays DAS 2, who collapses, dead, and slides down the side of the cliff, past Artanis, and comes to rest at the base.

Modri straight up punches a hole through DAS 3’s armor, killing him and launching him off the bluff and onto the ground, 30 feet below.

Merituuli strikes DAS 1 for a bit of damage, bolstered by his favored enemy ability.

Kalasääski tries to attack DAS 1, but in its haste, its claws plink off DAS 1’s armor.

DAS 1 looks steady on his feet and ready to retaliate, when his head is blown off by Hunni’s eldritch blast spell.

Hunni’s snake nudges the dead DAS 4 off the cliff without any trouble.

ROUND III

All of a sudden, Kalasääski flies down and lands on Merituuli’s arm. He butts Merituuli’s arm a few times with his beak and climbs up onto his shoulder and moves his head in a particular direction until he sees you looking there, too.

Merituuli can’t see through the trees, but he can hear, faintly, the beat of horse hooves, and the dust rising above the trees. He estimates that you all have approximately two rounds to prepare for the messenger’s return.

The hoof beats are un-even, as if there is more than one horse  coming. In fact, Merituuli realizes that his bird’s two beak-butts might be indicating two people coming.

OOC

spacer.pngDragon Army “Messenger”

  • DASM :: HP 65 :: AC 19 (splint, shield) :: SV +3 / +4 / +2 / +1 / +4 / +1 :: Skills Athletics +4, Perception +4
  • DASM’s Warhorse :: HP 19 :: AC 11 :: SV +4 / +1 / +1 / –4 / +1 / –2

  • DAS 5’s Warhorse :: HP 19 :: AC 11 :: SV +4 / +1 / +1 / –4 / +1 / –2

As per usual, you can write in your damage because you’ll know whether or not you hit, and if you cast a spell or do anything that forces them to save, you can roll their saves for them.

Each of you has two actions, bonus actions (if applicable), and movements before the “Messenger” returns. If you hide, you need to roll a 15 or higher to beat her passive Perception of 14.

The copse of trees (where Coltan currently stands), as well as the two smaller cospes, and of course the rest of the forest are all places you could hide if you want. Hiding in the forest or the large copse will grant you advantage, but hiding behind them, or at the edge of them will be a straight check. However, if you do hide within, it’s difficult terrain coming out.

Remember that your primary goal is to prevent anyone from getting word back to the dragon army that anything is amiss long enough for Cudgel to get her Ironclad Regiment from their encampment to this area to help hold off the invaders who will be coming later that afternoon-to-evening, supposedly to quarter in Vogler . . . supposedly.

Round III

After being told about the incoming extra enemies, Hunni ordered her snake to come back to her, and transformed it back to a stick in her hand. She also took a moment to look down at the bodies, but then decided that it would probably be best to get herself hidden. 'More are coming? Then we should hide. Give them a big surprise!" she enthused, even as she cast a quick spell on herself, leading to the icy shadows covering her body.

Round IV

Once covered in her icy armor, she moved to the trees to hide.

You can’t use this feature again until you finish a short or long rest.

Grovel, Cower, and Beg (Reskinned Draconic Cry).

As a bonus action, you let out a cry at your enemies within 10 feet of you. Until the start of your next turn, you and your allies have advantage on attack rolls against any of those enemies who could hear you. Dagger (light, thrown). Melee & Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, ranged 20/60 ft., one target.
Hit: 1d4 + 2 piercing damage.

Spell-casting: +5 or DC 13 | 1st 3/4 | 2nd 0/2

Cantrips

  1. Sacred Flame (V, S). Spell Attack: Dex DC 13, ranged 60 ft., one target.  Fail: 1d8 radiant damage.
  2. Word of Radiance (V, M). Spell Attack: Con DC 13, ranged 5 ft., each creature of your choice. Fail: 1d6 radiant damage.
  3. Light (V,M).  You touch one object that is no larger than 10 feet in any dimension. Until the spell ends, the object sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet. The light can be colored as you like. Completely covering the object with something opaque blocks the light. The spell ends if you cast it again or dismiss it as an action.  If you target an object held or worn by a hostile creature, that creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw to avoid the spell.

1st level spells prepared

  • Identify (V,S,M) Ritual. You choose one object that you must touch throughout the casting of the spell. If it is a magic item or some other magic-imbued object, you learn its properties and how to use them, whether it requires attunement to use, and how many charges it has, if any. You learn whether any spells are affecting the item and what they are. If the item was created by a spell, you learn which spell created it. If you instead touch a creature throughout the casting, you learn what spells, if any, are currently affecting it.
  • Searing Smite (V). The next time you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack during the spell's duration, your weapon flares with white-hot intensity, and the attack deals an extra 1d6 fire damage to the target and causes the target to ignite in flames. At the start of each of its turns until the spell ends, the target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 1d6 fire damage. On a successful save, the spell ends. If the target or a creature within 5 feet of it uses an action to put out the flames, or if some other effect douses the flames (such as the target being submerged in water), the spell ends.
  1. Bless (V,S,M).  You bless up to three creatures of your choice within 30 ft. Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw.  Concentration up to 1 minute.
  2. Cure Wounds (V,S).  A creature you touch regains a number of hit points equal to 1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.
  3. Detect Magic (V,S) Ritual. For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.  The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.  Concentration up to 10 minutes.
  4. Healing Word (V) Bonus.  A creature of your choice that you can see within range regains hit points equal to 1d4 + your spellcasting ability modifier. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.
  5. Guiding Bolt (V,S).  Make a ranged spell attack against the target within 120 feet. On a hit, the target takes 4d6 radiant damage, and the next attack roll made against this target before the end of your next turn has advantage

2nd-Level Spells Prepared

  • Heat Metal (V,S,M) Concentration. Choose a manufactured metal object, such as a metal weapon or a suit of heavy or medium metal armor, that you can see within range. You cause the object to glow red-hot. Any creature in physical contact with the object takes 2d8 fire damage when you cast the spell. Until the spell ends, you can use a bonus action on each of your subsequent turns to cause this damage again. If a creature is holding or wearing the object and takes the damage from it, the creature must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or drop the object if it can. If it doesn't drop the object, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks until the start of your next turn.
  • Magic Weapon (V,S) Concentration. You touch a nonmagical weapon. Until the spell ends, that weapon becomes a magic weapon with a +1 bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls.
  • 6. Spiritual Weapon (V,S) Bonus. When you cast the spell, you can make a melee spell attack against a creature within 5 feet of the weapon. On a hit, the target takes force damage equal to 1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. As a bonus action on your turn, you can move the weapon up to 20 feet and repeat the attack against a creature within 5 feet of it.

Channel Divinity: 1/1 short rest

Turn Undead.  Expend a use of your Channel Divinity as an action to make each undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you to make a Wisdom DC 13. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage.

Harness Divine Power.  As a bonus action, expend a use of your Channel Divinity to regain one expended spell slot, the level of which can be no higher than half your proficiency bonus (rounded up).

Artisan's Blessing. You conduct an hour-long ritual that crafts a nonmagical item that must include some metal: a simple or martial weapon, a suit of armor, ten pieces of ammunition, a set of tools, or another metal object (see chapter 5, "Equipment," in the Player's Handbook for examples of these items). The creation is completed at the end of the hour, coalescing in an unoccupied space of your choice on a surface within 5 feet of you.  The thing you create can be something that is worth no more than 100 gp. As part of this ritual, you must lay out metal, which can include coins, with a value equal to the creation. The metal irretrievably coalesces and transforms into the creation at the ritual's end, magically forming even nonmetal parts of the creation. The ritual can create a duplicate of a nonmagical item that contains metal, such as a key, if you possess the original during the ritual.

“My words” | ‘My thoughts’  | My actions . . .

Merituuli is about to continue his assault against the soldier, but stops short when the man's head simply... disappears. He looks to his side to see Hunni's hand outstretched in his direction, the gully dwarf barely bothering to aim. Merituuli briefly ponders what would have happened if the magical blast was even slightly off-angle, but Kalasääski interrupts his thoughts with some rather insistent nudging. His sharp elven ears pick up on two riders approaching from the northwest. Turning to the others, he says, "I think our messenger is on her way back, along with a friend. We should ready ourselves quickly."

Round 3

Looking down at the now headless body, Merituuli gives out a grunt of disgust before deciding it would be best to drag it into the bushes along with him. Strapping the baculite shell to his back, he pulls the soldier's body behind him, entering into the bushes. Kalasääski remains perched on his shoulder, watching in the direction of the riders' approach.

OOC - Merituuli, Round 3

Action: Grab the body of DAS1 and drag them along into the bush.

Bonus Action:

Movement: Move into the bush to S52 and hide the body of DAS1.

Round 4

Merituuli draws the baculite shell once more, and he and Kalasääski hunker down in the bushes, readying themselves for the riders.

OOC - Merituuli, Round 4

Action: Both Merituuli and Kalasääski take the Hide action. Merituuli re-arms himself with his shell.

Hit: A Large or smaller creature hit by a net is restrained until it is freed. A net has no effect on creatures that are formless, or creatures that are Huge or larger. A creature can use its action to make a DC 10 Strength check, freeing itself or another creature within its reach on a success. Dealing 5 slashing damage to the net (AC 10) also frees the creature without harming it, ending the effect and destroying the net.

Bonus Actions:

Primal Companion: Take Action. As a bonus action on your turn you command your Primal Companion to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. You can also sacrifice one of your attacks when you take the Attack action to command the beast to take the Attack action. If you are incapacitated, the beast can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

Other:

Favored Foe. When you hit a creature with an attack roll, you can call on your mystical bond with nature to mark the target as your favored enemy for 1 minute or until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell).

You can use this feature to mark a favored enemy a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

This feature’s extra damage increases when you reach certain levels in this class: to 1d6 at 6th level and to 1d8 at 14th level.

3rd Round

Mery signals Handsome to head toward the main woods, seeking the narrowest part of the path. Once the messenger and her companion pass that point, she figures she can bring Handsome out and block the return path.

4th Round

Mery urges Handsome into the woods, unsure of how to signal the warhorse to move with stealth, but her mount seems to understand the need and moves with surprising quietness for a creature his size, which makes it easy for her to do the same. When Artanis settles in right next to her, she tells the knight in low tones, "Let's use Handsome as the primary block on the return path. I don't question your bravery, but he's bigger and a whole lot harder to shove out of the way than you are. Besides, in terms of keeping them from going back the way they came, three are better than one." She gives him her best charming grin.

DR3 vs nonmagical bludgeoning, slashing, piercing

My words,  | My thoughts,’  | My actions . . .

Round III

Artanis watches the body of a soldier fly past him, narrowly avoiding knocking him from the cliff entirely. He'd take that as a good sign he thought, especially when he sees to more bodies career over the edge further along. He continues to try and hasten up the cliff, handily pulling himself over the top now no longer distracted by javelins flying at his head. He looks around, ready for action, only to notice all his companions disappearing off into the woods, with the last remaining soldier headless before Kai.

"What did I miss?" he calls out, as he heads over to his companions. hoping for someone to fill him in

Round IV

When they do, he positions himself in the main treeline, ready to cut them off should they turn to flee. Figuring he needs all the help he can get in his heavy chainmail, he fights his way deeper into the brush to get more cover, hoping his green tabard will hide his colour, before readying himself to dash free once the messenger has passed...

FeatsWar CasterPrerequisite: The ability to cast at least one spell
You have practiced casting Spells in the midst of Combat, learning Techniques that grant you the following benefits:
You have advantage on Constitution Saving Throws that you make to maintain your Concentration on a spell when you take damage.
You can perform the somatic Components of Spells even when you have Weapons or a Shield in one or both hands.
When a Hostile creature’s Movement provokes an opportunity Attack from you, you can use your Reaction to Cast a Spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity Attack. The spell must have a Casting Time of 1 Action and must target only that creature.

 | FeaturesRitual CastingYou can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell in your spellbook. You don’t need to have the spell prepared.
Arcane RecoverYou have learned to regain some of your magical energy by studying your spellbook. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your wizard level (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 6th level or higher. For example, if you’re a 4th-level wizard, you can recover up to two levels worth of spell slots. You can recover either a 2nd-level spell slot or two 1st-level spell slots.
BladesongYou can invoke an elven magic called the Bladesong, provided that you aren't wearing medium or heavy armor or using a shield. It graces you with supernatural speed, agility, and focus. You can use a bonus action to start the Bladesong, which lasts for 1 minute. It ends early if you are incapacitated, if you don medium or heavy armor or a shield, or if you use two hands to make an attack with a weapon. You can also dismiss the Bladesong at any time (no action required). While your Bladesong is active, you gain the following benefits: You gain a bonus to your AC equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1). Your walking speed increases by 10 feet. You have advantage on Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks. You gain a bonus to any Constitution saving throw you make to maintain your concentration on a spell. The bonus equals your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1). You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses of it when you finish a long rest.

Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: 30 Feet
Target: An unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within range
Components: V S M (A drop of mercury)
Duration: 1 Hour
Classes: Wizard
Description: This spell creates a circular, horizontal plane of force, 3 feet in diameter and 1 inch thick, that floats 3 feet above the ground in an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within range. The disk remains for the duration, and can hold up to 500 pounds. If more weight is placed on it, the spell ends, and everything on the disk falls to the ground. The disk is immobile while you are within 20 feet of it. If you move more than 20 feet away from it, the disk follows you so that it remains within 20 feet of you. It can move across uneven terrain, up or down stairs, slopes and the like, but it can’t cross an elevation change of 10 feet or more. For example, the disk can’t move across a 10-foot-deep pit, nor could it leave such a pit if it was created at the bottom. If you move more than 100 feet from the disk (typically because it can’t move around an obstacle to follow you), the spell ends.

III

Feeling a little useless, as the battle is over before he even truly managed to participate, Decimus follows along as Merituuli warns of the return of their friend the messenger, pressing his back against the bark of the tree, his breathing steady, and his ears open to the fait hoofbeats of the their returning prey. Preparing himself, he subdues the feeling of floating as the magic of the Expeditious Retreat spell leaves his body, and within the next moment, coinciding with the utterance of dark abyssal words and a few rapid hand signs, he swaps his rapier to his left hand, and extends his right, as dark shadows rush from the sleeves of his kimono and form within his palm, building and sharpening to form an ethereal blade of writhing shadows.

IV

The Wizard forces any extraneous thoughts from his mind, they have a job to do, and any wishful thinking of naps or the grandiosity of the situation they currently find themselves in are likely to drive him down the rabbit hole of dark thoughts, and there is simply no time. Instead, he listens to his breathing. In... Out... In... Out... The hoofbeats grow closer, but he remains calm, ready for the battle to commence.

Round III

"Well, if a common soldier can hit that hard, can only imagine what the lady can do." Modri's grin grows bigger than it ever has, at least in front of the group. After all, this is the first time since he's met them that he's felt in mortal danger, that he may actually die.

It's exciting.

Still, it's one thing to challenge death, and another to throw oneself at it without care. Modri runs to get into position taking a short detour. "Coltan, a bit of a healing touch, eh?" He runs by to ensure that the riders' exit back is cut off.

Round IV

Modri makes his way at the edge of some of the greenery. He breathes in deeply, and then out slowly, readying himself for another fight, for another chance to test his mettle. Any dream of challenging the whole army is gone after how strong a showing his last opponent showed him. Still, he'll do what he can for who he can...

Attacking the Dragon Army Soldiers

Round V

It’s barely moments after you finish hiding and getting ready that the messenger, followed by another DAS on a warhorse gallop into the clearing.

DEKANÉAS BREKEL! POU EÍSAI!?CORPORAL BREKEL! WHERE ARE YOU!? She calls out, authoritatively, then pauses. When she seems to receive no answer, she calls out in draconic, “DOREL? GORK? KASI?! Apántisé mou, re skatá!Answer me, you shits! When no answer comes, she and her companion, DAS 5, move around the area until they spot the bodies of their comrades at the base of the cliff.

Ypolochagós Fólketh! Koíta!Lieutenant Folketh! Look! DAS 5 says in draconic, Ypárchei aíma sti vromiá!There’s blood in the dirt!

Kefáli píso, Lurden!Head back, Lurden! the messenger says, Prépei na xekinísoume tin eisvolí tóra!We need to get the invasion underway, now! With that, the two turn their horses around to head back the way they came.

For those of you who wish to speak Draconic, please use Greek in Google Translate, and copy the small Roman letters version they provide under the Greek letters.

As promised, you all have Surprise, but because they go head of you in initiative, they’ll have no reactions in this round, and no actions or movements in the next round. Thus, please post for Round V & Round VI, as they cannot do anything on Round VI.

My words,  | My thoughts,’  | My actions . . .

Round V

He doesn't recognise the words of the messenger, though her tone is somewhat familiar. Some of the sterner trainers who figured a farm boy shouldn't be a squire let alone knight, often adopted such. As soon as they look over the cliffs edge they can't miss the bodies he thinks, and as he watches the horses start to turn around he breaks free of his cover, moving to block their exit even as he exhorts Modri into combat. Not that the dwarf had previously needed any urging!

Tensors Floating Disk1st Level Conjuration

V

The hoofbeats reach a crescendo and the two storm by. The same woman as before, and another soldier joining her. Once again, Decimus curses his lack of foresight to study languages that would have been more useful in his day to day life, but he can feel the urgency in their voices. With their backs to him, as he hears Artanis call out, he moves forward with as much swiftness as he can muster. Leaving behind the Cleric and the Sea-Elf, he bursts forward, his feet leaving the ground as he approaches, his arm arcing backwards, the shadowy blade in his hand leaving a trail of malevolent darkness as the cursed Abyssal words leave his lips. In his mind, he says a prayer to Solinari, apologizing for his actions. The dark blade crackles with a furious energy of the Booming Blade spell as he strikes at the horse beneath the messenger, hoping to remove any advantage she would have while mounted.

The weapon bites into the side of the horse, the magic leaching into its hide, but it remains upright as his feet touch earth once more, he adjusts his momentum and strikes upward with his physical rapier, aiming to cut the horses feet from beneath it, but by now, everything was in motion and his strike does not land, glancing off of the majestic armor the steed has been equipped with. Though he may have failed at striking down his target, the wound on the side of the horse is significant, and any attempt to flee will exacerbate it, sending bolts of magical electricity throughout its body, nearly crippling it.

VI

Before they have a chance to recover, the Shadow Blade in the Wizards hand is brought back, this time, green flames intertwining with the black shadows of the weapon, a deep emerald light highlighting the serious face of the wizard. With an upward thrust, he aims to to continue his onslaught, the the blonde blocks the shadowy weapon with her own, forcing it off to the side, with his secondary strike lashing against the armor of the horse once more, preventing him from doing any further damage.

Cantrips

Modri feels a surge as he's practically on the horses' heels. As the two Dragon Army soldiers begin to turn around, Modri is rushing straight into the fray once more. "Bet you feel the fool for looking down on a small town! Aharharhar!"

Modri closes in the remove the last soldier from the field, first missing... badly... perhaps his own foolhardiness and battle chat getting in the way. Still feel that surge of inspiration he spins and delivers a much cleaner blow for the second.

As this happens, strange energies start to pour from Modri's tattoos, coalescing between the two enemy warhorses. It starts to take shape... into some manner of floating jellyfish. It takes another few moments before it bursts into sparks as if it were a bomb. Modri had spoken of feeling a certain magic building within. He hasn't mentioned something so... strange.

The tentacles wrap around the messenger's arm and yank her from her horse towards Merituuli's position in the bushes! Favored Foe. When you hit a creature with an attack roll, you can call on your mystical bond with nature to mark the target as your favored enemy for 1 minute or until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell).

The first time on each of your turns that you hit the favored enemy and deal damage to it, including when you mark it, you can increase that damage by 1d4.

You can use this feature to mark a favored enemy a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

This feature’s extra damage increases when you reach certain levels in this class: to 1d6 at 6th level and to 1d8 at 14th level.

Friend of the Sea. You can communicate simple ideas to any Beast with a swimming speed. It can understand your words but you cannot understand it in return.

Ammunition:

20/20 Crossbow Bolts

Class Features:

  • 1/2 Favored Foe Marks
  • 3/3 1st Level Spells
