Kythera is peacefully chanting, enjoying the smell of the incense and the meditation of the ritual. She was just starting to feel the power of the spell take just a little bit of form when the rude bugbear comes in. She's never been to the Triple Nine and doesn't recognize Gulfa, but she is not happy with his outburst.

Then when he knocks over the lantern and purposefully lights the feather on fire, she's had enough.

"NO! What have you done! You just destroyed Lord Monder's Couatl feather! You say Raffolk owed you 200 gold. That feather was worth 700. You just destroyed the Lord's property. It seems to me, you now owe Raffolk 700 gold. You better pay him, now! or Lord Monder will need to get involved."

She stands up, her head only coming to the bugbear's elbows, pulls her shield off her back and puts it on her arm, expecting the bugbear to immediately attack her.

Concentration: Notes   Byra, halfling daughter of Taem and Gyo Willow Creek, built right into the side of a large hill it was, they were immediately accosted by a hoarde of beggars as they made their way into the village. They found the village to have no walls and no real militia that they could see. Prominent buildings were: the Crossed Guard (blacksmith), the Wise Owl (tavern): Lewis Pickerton (proprietor), Eldeth (dwarf on Inspiration Dust) Roots and Hourglass (alchemist), the Bearded Cabinet (general store), the Temple of the Eternal Mother (church). Flask and Rat, inn run by a dwarf Sheriff Kendall Kharis, dwarf necromancer that plays Battlechess Crownwarden Lord Cyne Monder, a recognizable and much-respected member of the Royal Court and Lord Protector of the Crown Gruffa, bugbear owner of Triple Nine

HEY! He was about to tell the bugbear about the value of the feather and that he now owed the halfling money, when Ky jumps in and does so. The Lord will be most upset with you as he was very excited about finally getting his hands on that rare feather. So with the Lord offering 700 gold for it would mean that you owe Raffolk here 500 gold after taking out the 200 he owes you. He stands ready, hoping this won't turn into a fight, but he is ready if it does. The random act of vandalism from the bugbear shocks Yaldiled for a moment before she reaches for her own weapons. "Let us perhaps not take this to violence, but you did in fact, just burn your debtor's best method of paying you back." Pushing the idea of owing money for destroying the feather, she left unmentioned, unlike the others. That lord having not paid yet made that seem a less likely avenue to handle this.

As the others seems to have chasing after the brute in hand, Egg looks around and sees he's a troubled Halfling to console. "That was... most unfortunate. Rest assured, more than nothing will be done to help you." It's not exactly the most generous offer, but Egg knows better than to overpromise. He alone can't make any decision.

"Keep the faith that the brightest of lights can be found in the darkness. Let's see what unfolds, shall we?" He hopes to stave off despair long enough to give whatever happens in the moment a chance. What that is, he does not know, but is most curious to find out.

CHAPTER ONE - BLOOD ON THE CROWN The bestial bugbear Gulfa knew he was more than outmatched as over half of the Manticores stood to defend Raffolk, and as they tried to explain the situation with the feather, the bugbear just blew off their words like water off of his back "Fedder this... and fedder that...." he said as he kept his focus on the halfling "You have 'till noon tomorrow.... 200 gold.... or I'll see you again.... in private, next time." and with that the brute stormed out of the establishment as quick as he came. The rest of the tavern shies away from the entire scene, which started unexpectedly and only took a couple of minutes to settle after Gulfa leaves, as the flames are quickly doused with mugs of beer. Ricio Tane comes over to the soaked table, has it cleaned up by Madrika, one of the barmaids, and invites the halfling and the Manticores to a clean table and a drink on the house to console the halfling. Raffolk avoids Ricio as much as possible and explains the events to him with only a few diversionary explanations. Too embarrassed as to what has just transpired to be openly speak about his gambling debt. He was shaken by the incident and desperate, and as soon as Ricio left the table, he opened up to the Manticores about his gambling debt repentantly and now he was afraid that Gulfa would surely maim or kill him if he doesn't deliver the 200 gold pieces by noon the next day. He tells the group that he isn't really brave, and that he really did not find the Couatl feather in a cave, but rather it was part of a shared inheritance. That both him and his Granny Pearla had both received one as the feathers had been passed down as part of their family's greatest assets. But now that he has lost his, he has nothing to give Lord Monder, and thus nothing to pay Gulfa with.

He was hoping they might find out where the halfling found it and go look for more. As I see it, you have a few choices. You can pack what you can carry and flee the city, never to return. You can hire someone to go to that bugbears place and put the hurt on him till he gives you the money he just cost you. You can pay them after they collect from Gulfa. Or, and probably the best way to go, is go to Lord Monder and tell him what happened. File a grievance towards Gulfa and have the law force him to pay for what he destroyed. Minus the amount you owe him. We can all be witnesses if need be. He turns to the rest of the group. And before any of you bleeding hearts suggest it, NO, we are not giving him the 200 gold so he can pay off his debt! No profit in that. We would just be out 200 gold. Kythera starts to move to stop the bugbear, but realizes that we need access to this tavern more than we need to defend this poor halfling. While she hates to see what has happened, she knows that it is not our fault at all. She's not about to give 200 gold pieces to a stranger. They could pay Byra for 10 years with that.

"Of course, Baldur. I agree. I'd rather hire a receptionist. Mr. Raffolk, I am sorry for your circumstances. If you go to the authorities and need witnesses, you can probably find us here. But otherwise, we are not getting involved."

"I might, however, be willing to be part of the group that puts a hurt on the bugbear, if the price were right, of course. Or, I can't help but wonder, how much does your Granny like you, lad? You think she'd be willing to part with her feather to save your skin? Or, just out of curiosity, you understand, how old and feeble, and deaf and blind, are we talking...?"

Yaldiled bites her own tongue to stop the suggestion Baldur had just denigrated from slipping out. Upon hearing what Nug was saying though no amount of force would keep her mouth shut. "I sincerely hope you are not suggesting what you are," She says to the human "Otherwise there will be blows between us if you try and make it come to pass. We can help Mr. Raffolk in other ways."

Egg has been listening attentively to everyone, trying to let it all sink in. "I respect the plight of a gambler. Gambling is fun, I enjoy losing money for the sport of it, though I encourage people to gamble only what they actually own. Debt is far less fun." It is the lightest of scoldings. He's not one to be a hypocrite though, to judge another man for taking his vice a little too far.

"Think hard on your next choice, Raffolk. You are in good company, you have options. What are you willing to sacrifice? What are you not? These are choices we all must make, and circumstances means it is your time." Egg tries to calm his own excitement, trying to respect the somber mood. He is ever so curious to what Raffolk says, always eager to learn another person's wishes.

Maybe you can talk to your Granny and explain your situation. She might give you her feather to help pay off your debts and keep you from bodily harm. You could pay off your debt and then give her the rest of the money. But as soon as we entered the place half our group just wandered off and started drinking. I think trying to use this place as business location is a bad idea seeing as how several of our group seem to be heavily distracted by alcohol and any other possible pleasure they bump into. So can we sit down and discuss our next move now? He motions to the table the halfling was using inviting the others to sit down. If the halfling wants to offer to hire them then he will listen. If not, then he wishes him good luck and lets him go on about his own business.
