Saara concluded, far more invested in locating the ritual victim than she was in searching the rubble and corpses for coins. She climbed right back down the ladder she'd just ascended, slowed only by needing to brush her cloak out of the way a few times as she descended. Once she was down, she continued retracing her steps, reequipping the shield she'd just put away.

Dungeons & Dragons 5e with DM BWatford


Baldur hastened down the ancient stone staircase, descending into the depths of the venerable windmill. As he entered its shadowy undercroft, he was met with a vision so startling that it rooted him to the spot in sheer astonishment.
 

Basement

Enormous slabs of stone form the walls and foundation of this spherical chamber. Along its perimeter, a collection of decrepit chests and tattered sacks—relics of a time when they brimmed with grain—stand in decay. Commanding the room’s heart is an incandescent arcane sigil, its profound runes etched into the stone floor. Encircling this mystical emblem, dark crimson candles cast a somber glow, their wax sculptures dwindling from past vigils, though a few continue to flicker with stubborn flames.

The revelation of the countess, garbed identically to the other acolytes they had previously encountered, was startling—her involvement extended beyond her dominion over the Royal Stud Farm.

In the sanctum’s nucleus, encircled by a luminescent sigil, stood a figure of menacing mien: ears tapered to wicked points, hide chiseled with scales, a sinuous tail, and talons that betrayed a lineage wrought in hellfire. Its chin bore serpentine tendrils, and its eyes, a baleful crimson, pierced the gloom. Clutched in its hand was a dagger, ornate and sinister. Just in front of this fiendish sentinel were two bound figures—the youthful Lord Kiryn Rumlyn and his mother, Lady Finia Rumlyn—both secured to their seats, held sightless by blindfolds, silenced with rags, and emitting faint, despondent sounds. Adjacent to them, the floor cradled the lifeless forms of Lord Zakar Rumlyn and Lord Wedras Rumlyn, their existence snuffed out in a crimson tide.

Alerted to the interlopers’ presence, the diabolic entity seized the young lord, brandishing the 0hellish blade at his throat as a dire ultimatum: any further advance or heroics would seal the boy’s fate. Amidst this grim tableau, Lady Rumlyn’s muffled cries of terror sliced through the tension, echoing her son’s peril.

Baldur steps away from the stairs but does not get any closer to the man with the dagger to the boys throat. His crossbow aimed directly at the mans face.

The trio of men guarding the Hatch had not been impressed with their demand for surrender, Saara doubted these cultists would. She drew the thin rod, and with a roar of whispers cracked a second blood seal. Crimson blood began to twist and wind itself around the rod, a surging roiling tide of red that thickened and grew even as her own form grew hollow and gaunt. Shield high, emblem of her Master staring forth at the occultists before her, she threw back her head and laughed as they prepared to fight. Power gathered around her, invisible and yet tangible, a coiled snake of hemmocraft ready to strike.

Ru's pulse begins to rise as she takes in the scene in the basement. There are more of the witches and a demonic figure who threatens the life of one of the prisoners...just the kind of excitement she's been hoping for.

Not wanting to rush in whilst Baldur tries to be diplomatic, Ru calmly and quietly continues down the steps, backing away slowly south as she tries to keep her eyes on both the diabolical fiend and the coven. She knows that she has the ability to swiftly travel across the room to where she's needed, and she thanks the gods that she didn't waste her powers earlier.

The witchservants, disturbed from their arcane communion, dispersed like shadows across the chamber, each conjuring a sinister sphere of energy that crackled menacingly in their palms, poised to unleash destruction at the slightest provocation. Meanwhile, the demonic entity within the summoning circle poised its wicked blade, eager to extinguish young Lord Rumlyn’s flame of life.

Baldur’s voice echoed with authority as he descended the steps, his presence commanding the room. In response, Saara shattered a blood seal, her body contorting in a grotesque dance of power, her shield raised like a defiant standard against the dark congregation. Her laughter, a chilling harbinger of the battle to come, resonated as she summoned the wrathful might of hemmocraft, a serpent lying in wait to deliver its venomous kiss.

Ru, hesitant to disrupt Baldur’s parley, descended the staircase with a measured calm, retreating with a cautious grace to the south. Her gaze darted between the malevolent fiend and the witches’ assembly. Yet fate conspired against her stealth, as a cultist’s path brought them perilously close, the air thick with impending conflict.

Above, their two companions lingered, suspended in the silence of anticipation, awaiting the outcome of the confrontation below—a wait that would not be long.

The fiend, center of the unfolding maelstrom, sneered at Baldur’s challenge. “You shall be chastised for your trespass, as the Matrons chastised the meddlesome Lord Rumlyn,” it hissed.

“Extinguish their lives,” it commanded the coven, its blade singing a fatal arc across the boy’s throat, snuffing out his existence. The act ignited the crimson r
unes etched into the stone, which blazed to life with the boy’s spilled essence.

In a tempest of dark magic, the witchservants, led by the countess, unleashed their pent-up fury. Three orbs of destruction sought Saara, while another sought Baldur. He evaded his intended doom, but Saara bore the brunt of the assault, two orbs striking her with relentless force.Yet Saara, undaunted, retaliated with her own shadowy barrage, targeting the diabolical executioner. One of her blasts found its mark, eliciting from the creature a sinister grin of perverse admiration for her form and ferocity—a sight that did not intimidate but rather seemed to delight in the horror it beheld.

Saara reeled as the magic struck her, forcing her back a step. Yet this was Sorcery, and she was a Child of the Court of Asps. She feared no Witchservant, rashly ignoring them and concentrating her wrath upon the executioner.

"You dawdle while the boy dies!"

She hissed, her voice twisted by the transformation that had overtaken her. Wrapped up in her Patron's power, she broke a second Blood Seal, flickering crimson glyphs appearing in the air before her as she called down her own Cursecraft. Another barked word of power, another stabbing motion with her sanguine rod, and as she stepped to the bottom of the stairs another two motes of nearly invisible power swept through the air to smash into the murderer's form.

As the diabolical figure slashes his blade across the boy's throat Ru gasps, then her face hardens, knowing that this nest of vipers must be swiftly dispatched.

"Take down the fiend! Let's see how they cope without their master!" she cries, before uttering a word of power and taking the Raven Queens Blessing.

A fraction of a second later she stands right behind the demonic creature, her blade snaking out before her form becomes ghostly and translucent. "Flee while you can milady!" she warns Lady Rumlyn.

Watching the others go down the stairs and hearing the chaos that ensues she follows quickly, still stuck at the top of the stairs, but at least she can see where she is aiming now. Reaching out over the head of Saara, the purplish-black light seeks like smoke from between her tightly held fingers, from her hand a pin-prick of light launches and strikes a point mid-air in the chamber below.

THe point seems to hang for just a moment before it erupts into the same dark colours flames, spilling through the room and over its occupants like a boiling liquid, more so than any natural flame.

Notes:
Aiming to hit 1, 2, countess and Ebon. I was having the worst time trying to describe the actual grid so i just did a little overlay for what i'm intending. I think so long as i hit that back corner, it should only hit enemies. Hope! (there may be some backdraft...)

I'm also using Empowered Metamagic to really pack a punch.
