You instantly light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire.

Katya is quiet and thoughtful as they approach the home of the Townmaster, some of which is from the guilt of having broken her word on not paying for drinks, having been slightly run over by the force of personality that is the stocky white haired warrior, though she did leave behind a coin on the table as a thanks, and a hope that with it, there would be slightly better wine next time. As the knocks evoke a rather scared response, the princess feels some chagrin at the cowardice of someone who claimed to be the master of the town. The dragon evoked fear in all, but it was those with power who had opportunities to help. Her lips tighten into a thin line as Vala responds in a much more diplomatic tone than the red haired Druid is feeling she may have done in her place, but it is appropriate, and she scolds herself slightly for getting so emotional about the situation. Adding a fourth question to the list put forth, Katya awaits the opening of the door to see what kind of person would consider themselves in charge.

"I don't suppose we could get some assistance from the town stables to make our brief our travels?"

While the rest of the group knocked on the door of the townmaster, Vadania took a few moments to walk around the house while keeping her ear out for the conversation. The responses coming from inside seemed a bit hurried, and she wondered if the sudden appearance of what appeared to be potentially grizzled newcomers frightened the man from coming out.

You here the voice from the other side of the door "Miss Vala, you have a very unusual style of speech, is this how your folk is talking among each other. Sounds preposterous but let me try it to see if it fosters a better understanding:

1) There is all kind of creatures that have moved around since that bedeviled dragon took seat on the Icespire peak. Some folks even say that there is a manticore around. I would feel just better if our most capable healer was closer in town.

2) The Baker and his wife have offered to take her in and give her a spare chamber.

3) I agree that a map could be useful to you, but I wouldn't know where you could get one. I can't part with my official map. Or do you have any cartographers with you that could make a copy."

he pauses for a bit before resuming to talk "This speaking in bullet points is to cumbersome for me, let me return to my usual form of speech. The umbrage hills are just 5 miles south of Phandalin, I don't think you will need a map to find the mill. The good Adabra Gwynn is a resolute woman, and will surely see sense when you present the case. I just want to know her to be safe. Come back afterwards for your reward"

Vadania, you walk around the carefully built house, it seems to be built on a bit grander scale than most of the other buildings. On a shingle you see the carved text "WESTER BANK". All doors and shutters seem to be closed.

Makaria; joins the group at the house of the Townmaster, but is surprised by his almost nonchalant answers towards Vala. As at this stage the door is still closed firmly shut on them. "Thank you for your time sir," she replied.

Now looking towards Vala and the others. "So it looks like we are to venture out without a map now; maybe he is right and we don't need one being only 5 miles south of here. Perhaps we should go there now,"? she said.

“Why, thank you Mr. Wester.” Vala made a brief pause and thought, “I just returned the courtesy of your reception, for we all know dragons won’t knock doors, but bash them. I can but talk for myself and say actions speak louder than words, and you’ve already told me enough”. And while turning to the party she continued, “I appreciate the gesture you had in talking to us, I believe we’ve worked on our main concerns; but we are very interested in borrowing the map until we can acquire one ourselves. On the other hand, others here might have additional inquiries”. And having "confirmed" that the manticore could be a threat while heading to Gynn’s place, she started thinking of the next steps… She looked at Makaria and told her, "Don't worry, my friend. The best path to success is action".

OOC: I'd like to roll persuasion and try to convince Wester to lend us his map.

"Understood and thanks!", said Vala in a firm tone. She heard Wester walk away from the door (which she signaled to the others), but was ready to knock one more time if the group had any more questions; afterwards, she asked: "Are any of you educated in cartography?"

"I have drawn several field maps, though not as detailed as a trained cartographer." She answered Vala's question. Then turning to the rest of the group she nodded along with Makaria's summation. A few miles down the road shouldn't be anything difficult, and moving about that much after the long stagecoach ride seemed very appealing.

"If there is possible trouble, we should move carefully. Keep your eyes and ears open, and try not to make too much noise."

She then began to walk along the trail to the south, keeping her long strides controlled so as not to outpace the others.

The princess considers knocking at the door again so they can at least see the map, but after the discourteous reception, she feels quite strongly that completing the task without any assistance from their less than gracious job giver would make him look even less capable. Perhaps this whole situation is an opportunity for her, if the town is suffering from a lack of leadership, then it is only fair to the people to have a leader they can look up to, who is willing to dirty their hands in order to maintain the safety and status of their community. The more she ponders, the hotter under the collar she feels regarding the nature of the situation, forcing her to break her train of thought and focus on the moment. The rest of the group does not seem to be as irate regarding his disposition, and she did not want to be singled out by her frustration. A quick, deep breath, and she centers herself.

"I am familiar with cartographic education and planning, but I'm afraid I have little experience in the practical aspect, maybe if our grace had allowed us a glimpse of the map I could have at least planned a route, but I suppose we will just have to take his word for it"

A small smile plays on her lips. Though she did not look it, she was quite adept in dealing with the natural world, she felt far more at home there than within the stone walls of a city. A secret second life.

"The Tavernmaster mentioned the Miner's Exchange have a map, it may not be as detailed, but if this healer is so important, I'm sure they could point out on the map where she lives"

Vala waited for the others to speak or ask more questions; she was already in agreement with Makaria’s, which she appreciated and replied to: "If we can make it today, let's do it. All we gotta do is avoiding traveling overnight, because of the monsters".

She also nodded at Katya's idea of visiting the miner’s guild if others willed it.

And once the party was done talking to Wester, Vala looked around and made sure the places she wanted to visit were along the way; having noticed Vadania walking away, she reminded the party of her previous suggestion: "I’d like to visit the store we saw before arriving to Wester's, I believe we might need supplies; at least I want to buy a mule" *. And then talked to the monk: "Vadania, what did you see when you checked around the place?"

She then talked to Makaria, Reitan and Katya. "Did you spot the shrine? If there was somebody in there, do you think they could bless us to succeed?".

* We could either visit the store or purchase things behind the scenes, if you favor moving towards Gynn.

Gilavar actively listens to the conversations. At a polite pause, the elf suggests, “If we cannot get a map, and it’s that close, I’m ready to go now if anyone wants to go with me. It’ll take us a little less than two hours to walk there, and we’ve about six hours of sunlight left to get the midwife back. She might take time to organize leaving her home and be slower.”

”When we return, we’ll have more time and money to shop. Maybe then, we can copy the Master’s map. Anyone want to go now?”

OOC: With the wanderer feature, Gilavar would be confident to get there and back again.

"Why, a cautious man is worth two of his kind; so better check our goods and buy supplies before parting." Vala was eager to start the quest, just like Gilavar, but she also wanted it to be the smoothest job.

"The mule will help us move Gwynn faster, and she will probably have to bring some tools or goods with her... I'm already fine with my load, and escorting the midwife might already be enough of a task to also carry her stuff in our backs. So! Who wants to do some shopping? We can spare a few minutes in this and save time and effort in the future...

And maybe, maybe we find something useful to make a Manticore tame or weaker. Do any of you knows about Manticores? Know thy enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles, you will never be defeated." The paladin was quite inspired.

Reitan didn't have any questions the others haven't already asked. He smiled, however, with amusement over the mention of the mule.

Maybe you answered your own question. I don't know anything specific about Manitcores, but we might have a weaker one after it takes it's fill of mule. He pauses a moment.

Might I suggest picking up a saddlebag of poison? You know, just in case, if anyone happens to have any.

"Shrine, what shrine? I have not frequented one of late not likely to. What I do know of Hlal however is that she rarely intervenes in the affairs of mortals. She is more inclined to give pranks, and humour. I was fortunate to lay eyes on one of her more natural states; that of a copper dragon; that was a long time ago," she said in answer towards the Paladin.

Her ears twitched on hearing Gilavar's comment about six hour's of sunlight left in the day. Although the darkness of the night never really bothered her; after all she had dark vision. It was far better being a live chicken than a dead duck in the wild. She knew full well where her weaknesses and strengths lie; there was always going to be strength in numbers.

"I think Gilavar is right here although my vision wont be impaired with it being night; much like his. The fact that there is only six hours of daylight left and for the sake of our human members in the team; I think we should expedite getting this midwife back to the Baker and his wife's lodgings in town without delay," she replied.

She ponders her other queries before continuing; a map would be handy and so would a mule to make the job quicker?

"Unfortunately I'm neither a cartographer or know anything about Manticores; but if this creature is equally dangerous as a dragon. Then let us not encounter this thing alone in the wilderness at night where it has the advantage," she said.

She smiled with a kind of devilish grin before speaking. "Maybe the midwife needs a good scare and reason to come back to town,"? she added, thinking of putting her thaumaturgy to good use.
