Oathday, 12 Rova 4719, early afternoon

Wise in the ways of the wild and the denizens called it home, Wilder senses the truth in Boradurs keen observation. Usage of tiny bells is indeed the hallmark of fey creatures, and Wilder is well aware that a place like the Mwangi would be an ideal habitat for such beings. In fact, he has heard of a small fey people with a particular affinity for bells stalking the depths of the Mwangi Expanse. Biloko, they are called - small humanoids with crocodile snaped snouts, rust-colored skin and blood-red eyes. They are supposed to be extremely fierce and savage - the folklore has it that in defiance of their own size, they can swallow mediums-sized humans whole like a snake swallowing a deer! Wilder vaguely remembers that he has himself once summoned such a creature to aid the party in the fight against the bandits covering the back entrance to the catacombs beneath Citadel Altarein a long time ago (at least a month...). Obviously, without having seen them first hand, he has no way of knowing whether this is what they are facing, but that would be Wilders best guess.

Mechanics

 

Note that the remaster has also clarified how Recall Knowledge works. Before, you just rolled some dice and got some info. How, it is specified that a single roll lets you gain information on a specific question you pose to yourself. This means that you can decide for yourself what kind of information you are looking for, but it also means that you can't just say "I want to get some information on X". You have to be a bit more specific.

I like this change, and I'd like to implement it as well, with one small caveat: As far as I can see, it is not specified in the remastered rules whether you can retry a failed recall knowledge attempt. I would say that you can make an attempt to recall knowledge on a specific question once per day (just like identify action). Otherwise, out of combat you could simply repeat the same question over and over again until you get a critical success and learn everything there is to know.

In this case, Wilder asked the question: "Does anything here remind me of the fey world". The short answer would be yes - the use of bells are often associated with fey creatures. But in this case, it was a critical success on the DC I set, so I volunteered a bit more. If you wish to know more, ask away, but be specific. You can make one roll per question - if you do not, I will secretly make any rolls required.

"I don't think they'll take kindly to our presence, but perhaps there's a way to negotiate with them? Perhaps. They do like bells quite a lot. Does anyone have any bells that we could possibly trade? I could also summon a biloko to negotiate on our behalf. It would be risky, but so would most other tactics. However, if the pillar has invaded their minds, as I suspect, I'm not sure that any type of negotiation would be successful."

 

"I would rather resolve this peacefully, but they are rather nasty creatures. I definitely don't want to be caught in one of their traps. Let's not let them get the drop on us."

"Hm, we had another pillar enslave people's minds before. Of course, it could also be that, whoever is hiding in that tree, does so willingly. Still, if we can take down the pillar before the guardians can react, that would be ideal. So perhaps, if we can circle around to get to the pillar, that would be our best approach?", Samrod ponders the new information. Fighting the pillar and its guardians would be the worst scenario. Taking down the pillar and finding the guardians no longer being willing to put up a fight, or maybe even thankful would be ideal.

As you quietly discuss the tactics of going forward, you come to the realization that part of that such discussions would require some details as well. How do you intend to circle around? Do all of you go or just some of you? How close to the dragon pillar to mean to approach, etc. Your experience so far has taught you that such details could have a profound influence on what happens next.

Mechanics

 

The map is very small - which is extremely annoying in these encounters (I'm depending on the maps provided by Paizo - and for some reason they can't imagine that one would even need more space to maneuver on...). But just imagine that for all practical purposes the terrain is similar for a wide area beyond the edge of what you can see.

"If I were to make Cirmaran flying, and if he makes himself invisible, he could probably sneak right up to the pillar. Maybe he could take a lasso of rope, throw it over the pillar and then carry one end back to us. They enemies might notice the rope when it gets too long, but between Wednesday, Samrod and Boradur, I bet we could pull that thing over before anyone can react."

 

"Just one idea, though. I mean, I guess we could slog through the swamp to circle around also, but it'll be wet, and I'm not sure I trust Wednesday to avoid the hidden bells all that well."

Gonna have to cross a couple streams either way, probably gonna be wet and messy." Boradur looks to Cirmaran. "Looks like you get to take the lead."

With a gesture of his hand, Cirmaran leads the group as quietly as possible in a wide circle around the area where the dragon pillar is raised. Slogging through the much and ankle deep waters is hard work and it takes another hour just to reach an approach from the other side. The terrain here is just as wet as where the dragon pillar was raised, and although the elf is a sailor he has little experience with moving through thick swamps. But your precautions pay off. You do not stumble across any strung up bells along the way.

You pause a good distance east of the where the dragon pillar is erected, although you can't see it from your present position - the light vegetation and the mist drifting across the puddles shield you from view. You suspect that approaching the dragon pillar from here, you would most likely enter the area where bells are strung up and you may become detected. After all, once you can see the pillar, chances are it can see you too.

Now that the pillar is between us and the fey, plan "fly invisibly, bag the pillar's head, then cast Curse of Lost Time on it is a go! I will of course be using the bagged pillar as cover from the fey until I can get away again... ;)

Oathday, 12 Rova 4719, afternoon

Wilder shares his enchantment of flight and Cirmaran add his own invisibility before taking to the air. Once airborn, he gets a better bearing on the dragon pillar, which he finds around 80 ft. to the west of the groups position. It takes just a few seconds for himto close the distance through the air, all the while the dragon pillars head swivels in random directions scanning for threats. Cirmaran approaches silently through the air with his sack in hand, ready to throw it over the head of the pillar.

Mechanics

 

The encounter starts as Cirmaran makes his move. First action is to throw the sack over the dragon pillars head. Make an unarmed attack or an athletics check with a +4 circumstance bonus for being up close, airborne and invisible. Then Cirmaran can use his last two actions to cast his spell - roll damage. The dragon pillar does not fall exactly into one of the three categories specified in the spell text, but it gets closest to a construct, so it is entitled to a basic Fort save.
