Round 9

spacer.png

Samrod circles around the naunet, but the chaotic beast largely ignores him. That is, until Samrod lands a massive blow with his shield on the creatures back. Its form briefly twists and warps into strange shapes as it writhe in pain and its bellowing roar belies its rage. It utters strange incoherent sounds, seemingly without structure or rythm - and yet you suspect that this is how its speech sounds like. Probably a curse of some kind.

Wilder whirls his bola up to speed at Wednesday clamly steps closer. He lets go of the entangling device, but it bounces harmless off the naunets back, returning immediately to Wilders hand. The halfling follows up with yet another attempt at zapping the naunet. The creature dodges yet again, but this time its is partly hampered by its grasp of Boradur, so it is unable to avoid it entirely. Strangely, Wilder witnesses how the flow of electricity seems to do something to the naunets body. It takes on a slightly different coloration, its skin becoming a bit smoother and more reflective.

Condition: Grabbed but escapes

Boradur manages to catch the second tail strike on his shield, blunting the force. He tries his usual tactic of knocking the creature off balance, but it is too large to be easily moved. He twists and uses the leverage of his shield to break free, squares up behind his shield again and strikes. Unfortunately, the creature's rather squishy and flexible body needs a solid hit have any effect and Boradur's poorly aimed strike simply slides off.

Round 9

In the test of strength that follows the naunets grabbling, Boradur comes out on top and with great effort, he uncoils the beasts writhing tail. After the struggle he has little strength left - his follow-up strike is feeble and the blow glances harmlessly off the beast smooth skin.

Cirmaran tries to blend into the foilage of the jungle, but his target is not fooled and it dodges the missile sent its way.

Round 10

spacer.png

A triumphal "Aha!!" is heard from within the cabin and moments later, Pendergrast emerges with a mechanical contraption in his hands: A metal pipe embedded in an artfully decorate wooden stock. He has also retreived his whip now hanging from his belt. "Clear the way!", he bellows nodding at the beast struggling with Boradur.

The naunet facing Boradur staggers from the massive blow delivered by Samrods shield and whirls around to face the desert warrior instead. Recognizing its precarious position wedged in between Boradurs hamme and Samrods anvil, it circles around Samrod to make a strike at its back. Having made some distance between itself and the warriors, it begins to chant unintelligible words and green glowing arrow of primal magic appears between its tentacles above its back. With a complex gesture, it sends to arrow flying in Samrods direction. It completely misfires, however, and the arrow fizzles into thin air far above the warriors head. It roars in frustration and anger over its own ineptitude.

The other naunet jumps into the air and flying low over the ground takes up pursuit of Cirmaran. As it lands, one of its tentacles clenches into a fist, taking a jab at the rogue. The agile sailor easily dodges the strike.

Mechanics

I don't think you've specifically mentioned it (and nobody responded to my - admittedly subtle - question), so I will assume that you left Pendergrasts bag in the cabin when you came out to make the final assault on the mine.

Noting with grim satisfaction that the strange creature had to release Boradur, Samrod is ready to bring his shield to bear again His opportunity comes as the creature passes him by closely, not taking advantage of its greater reach. Twirling around, Samrod uses Wilder's Fly spell to bodily slam into the creature.

Now Samrod must make a decision... try to circle around the creature again to establish a flank... or maybe dart in to make an attempt to unbalance the critter, making it an easier target for his companions, and the withdraw back out of its reach, forcing it to move to engage.

After a moment of consideration, Samrod decides to see if bodily ramming also topples these beasts, then moves to the north-east of Boradur, ready to lure the beast back into range.

Only then does he notice Pendergrast aiming his strange contraption at the creature, bringing him within reach of the monster. Oh well, too late to fix that now...

Boradur doesn't know for certain what the contraption Pendergrast has produced is, but clearly from the way he handles it is some sort of weapon or magical device . Best make sure he has time to use it then. The dwarven champion rushes forwards, shield raised and ready, hammer spinning through the air in front of him as he joins the obnoxious explorer. Round 10

Cirmaran follows through on his hide'n'seek strategy and attempts another sniper shot on the naunet, but misses in his haste. Samrod has better luck. Not only does he catch the beast with his shield when it tries to bypass him, but he also manages to topple it over hard with a well-placed kick. It rolls in the dirt, its long tail whipping furiously in the air.

Wilder calls forth another bolt of lightning - this one splitting into two and zapping both the naunets. Strangely enough, the electric charge seems to largely dance on the surface of its smooth, reflective skin and discharge harmlessly into the ground. The other naunet - the one that Wilder had not struck before - reacts in much the same way the first one did: Its skin seems to change texture and coloration in response to the static charge - apparently the attack itself provokes a defensive response in the creatures physiology, rendering it more resistent to the same type of attack!

Finally, Boradur moves into protective range of Pendergrast, delivering another blow to its beaten form. The repeated punishment from several sources seems to take its toll, at long last.

Round 11

spacer.png

"Move away you big oaf! You are in the way!!", the endearing dr. Pendergrast huffs as he steps around Boradur to get a better view on the beast. He puts the strange device to his shoulder and takes aim. Suddenly a massive deafening blast is heard from the thing and a great billow of smoke and fire comes out of the end pointing towards the naunet. The blast sends a cloud of fire and projectiles at the naunet, which rolls and dodges to avoid the brunt of the blast. Still, the naunet takes heavy damage and appears to be severely injured at this point. "HAH! Eat this, you fiend!", he yells in triumph. Once more the creatures skin morphs, this time turning darker and hardening like a piece of charred wood.

The badly hurt naunet, struggles to its "feet", and consumed with pain and rage turns towards Pendergrast. It lunges at the explorer, snapping at him with its bloody jaws, but misses. However, the follow-up swing with its tentacle strikes Pendergrast in the face and he staggers from the shock. He blinks and stands looking confused.

The second naunet finally seems to grow tired of its cat and mouse game with Cirmaran. It begins to chant, drawing strange patterns in the air with its tentacles, and a strange green-hued mist begins to form around the area where Cirmaran is trying to hide. It grows thicker and thicker until it so dense that Cirmaran can actually feel it pressing upon his body. It is not painful in any way, and it doesn't appear harmful, but it obscures his vision and makes it hard for him to move.

Having made the decision to disengage from the creature, Samrod can not capitalise on it having to expose itself when standing up, but on the other hand, he gets a good view at how Pendergrast's strange weapon is working. Oh! That must be one of those 'firearms' he has heard about. The effect on the creature is immediate at least.

Hmm... remembering the flasks of acid and alchemical fire he brought, Samrod fishes a vial of alchemical acid out of his belt pouch and readies himself to hurl it at the creature, just waiting to see if Boradur can knock it out first...

Whatever the device is, it has a rather gratifying effect, one Boradur is just as happy having aimed elsewhere. The creature retaliates, Boradur shields Pendergrast with holy power and strikes back. Round 11

spacer.png

Boradur shields Pendergrast from some of the hurt given by the beasts tentacle - though the archaeologist still appears somewhat flummoxed - and delivers a strike of his own in retaliation. Severely hurt, this last strike finally fells the strange creature - what almost sounds like a sigh of relief escapes the beast as it sinks to the ground and lies still.

Wilder casts an enchantment on the other naunet and it begins to make the strangest sound you have ever heard. Like a cross between the buzzing of a bee and the trumpeting of an elefant bull in heat - mixed with honking of a donkey at irregular intervals. Its morphous form convulses in spasms in tune with the astonishing sound and it is clearly cause of some distraction.

Mechanics

Boradur: Just to be sure - the damage resistance from retributive strike is 9, right?
