Noting the creature collapsing in defeat, Samrod approaches it and empties the contents of the acid vial over the body, to prevent it from recovering from its wounds and re-entering the fight.

"And stay down!" "One down, one to go..."

Moving

As Samrod needs to move next to the critter to pour the acid on it, Samrod should end up in square AG 41

Clicking his heels together, Cirmaran relied on his magical boots to get him out of the confounding cloud and into more conventional cover. Then he drew and fired at the convulsing creature, following up with a second arrow. He was trusting Samrod to be more of a distraction than himself.

Round 11

When Samrod pours acid on the naunets body, its skin begins to zizzle and bubble where the corrosive liquid hits and a whiff of smoke rises from the wound, but otherwise no change appears to take place. Looking intently at the creatures wounds, no more mending or improvement is apparent.

Cirmaran ignores the thick mist and moves into the jungle to hide behind a tree. His first shot is perfect and another arrow burrows into the creature's formless flesh. The second shot....not so much...

Round 12

"Haha!!! Good shot, my little stout friend!", Pendergrast exclaims as Boradur takes down the naunet. He immediately begins to reload the boomstick - which turns out to be a rather involved affair. He first fetches a small leather pouch from his belt and pours what appears to be black powder into the muzzle of the thing. Then he drops in a handfull of small metallic objects and finally, he sticks a poker into the muzzle to pack it nice and tight. "Now!", he calls out as he once more shoulders his weapon, "...where did the other one go?"

The other one Aelita.jpg.43ea168ac94a792230e7ff06dd97a9e7.jpg- just around the corner - continues to honk its strange noises as it shakes its head in annoyance. Suddenly, its form begins to bulge and distort in different places. The tentacles retract into its back, its long tail shrinks and splits in two and its horns seems to split in hundreds of thin strands, forming a long wave of beautiful hair. Its reptilian skin smooths, lightens and takes the tone of milk and honey. Its fearsome maw shrinks into a small and tender mouth. In a matter of seconds, the strange beast has gone and in its place stands a beautiful female elf - she looks a bit like a female version of Cirmaran - only much better looking. Its weird laughter turns into a light, tingling chuckle. She begins to speak in between her chuckles - calling out to Cirmaran in the bushes, but the language is still as otherworldly and incomprehensible as before.

Mechanics

Cirmaran: Technically, the fog only provides concealment - not invisibility, so it does not "break line of sight". It makes no difference here as Cirmaran can simply stride into the jungle (instead of sneaking) and use the stealth check to hide in the undergrowth. So the outcome is the same - but just so you know.

Wilder performs battle medicine on Samrod (1 action), and then maintains his spell (2nd action) as he urges Wednesday to head south-east. Ending in square AN-42. Seeing the elven woman, he calls out:

"Hey, hi-ya! Who are you? It's not safe here, you know. There's some scary dangerous things about. My name is Wilder, by the way, nature sorcerer extraordinaire. Are you sure you don't want to go inside, out of danger, maybe make yourself a cup of tea or something?"

(it's probably crazy, but for his 3rd action, I'll make diplomacy roll as he tries to socialize with this elven woman, who's not really a woman)

Samrod watches the acid eat away at the dead creature's flesh. This one does indeed seem to stay down. As Wilder pauses to apply a quick bandage to his chest wound, Samrod nods and gives the Halfling a grateful shoulder squeeze with his gauntleted hand. "Thank you, Wilder Effendi, your aid is greatly appreciated..."

He is distracted by watching Pendergrast go through the painfully slow process of reloading his odd weapon. While its effect on the slain Naunat is undeniable (and Samrod will admit, impressive), the veteran soldier decides he will rather stick with his short bow. It is certainly not as random and clumsy as Pendergrast's firearm. Surely they will be just a fad...

But then Samrod is reminded that the other critter is still around when he realises that Wilder seems to be talking to someone. What?

Striding around the corner of the hut, Samrod is temporarily stumped when he does not see another Naunat, but what appears to be an Elf. Is this...?

And then of course, Cirmaran dispells all doubt by shooting an arrow into the alleged 'Elf', declaring her to be a shape-shifter. And yet for a moment Samrod hesitates to go in for the kill. If this creature chose to assume the form of an Elf to parlay, should one not at least give it a chance to surrender?

Taking a heart, Samrod closes the distance to the creature and demands its surrender, shouting "Yield!" and gesturing for it to lay down on the ground. He may not speak the creature's language, but Samrod has learned to let his body language do the talking for him when he asserts his dominance over a foe. He learned at least that much from studying Dragons...

Boradur saw the other creature vanish around the building, so he follows carefully, not wanting to fall into a simple ambush. He rounds the corner, shield high and beholds an unexpected sight, an elf maid wandering about the encampment and not one of the locals by her appearance. Despite being momentarily taken aback, it doesn't take long for the perceptive dwur to realize what has happened, not with Cirmaran shooting it from the bushes and yelling something about a shapechanger. Boradur is still a bit surprised, that's more power than he thought the naunet's were supposed to have, but it is one well suited to their chaotic and rather fluid nature.

Round 12

Wilder quickly patches up Samrod and closes in to begin socialising with the apparent newcomer. It does not seem like Wilder makes much of an impression on her, however - the language barrier not making things much easier. If anything, the elf seems to find the halfling very amusing - she casts a glance in his direction and almost buckles over in outright laughter. Perhaps she has never seen a halfling riding a camel before?

Cirmaran and Boradur are not fooled, however. The rogue sends another arrow, hitting the beautiful elf in her thigh, just as Boradur rounds the corner and bashes her with his thrown hammer from the other side. Her apparent frailty notwithstanding, she weathers the twin assault surprisingly well and she remains standing even if she looks badly hurt.

Samrod quickly follows, but takes no other hostile action than to give her a stern look and a scathing command. Her eyes flicker as a look of uncertainty sweeps across her face. For a second, the looks like a frightened doe caught in the headlights of an onrushing horse-drawn carriage.

Round 13

Having finally reloaded his noisy device, Pendergrast follows close behindAelita.jpg.43ea168ac94a792230e7ff06dd97a9e7.jpg Samrod. "A shapeshifter, eh? Well, we'll see about that! The disguise has yet to be fashioned that will fool the astute Dr. Gerhard Pendergrast!" But then as he rounds the corner, and lays eyes on the fair maid, he stops in his tracks and stammers, "Are you quite sure about this?!? This fair lady is supposed to be the same as that hideous aberation? I think not! Perhaps it assaulted her and took off into the jungle?" He takes a few steps close and holds out his hands towards her, "Are you in need of assistance, milady?"

The maid looks anxiously from Pendergrast to Samrod to Boradur and Cirmaran in the bushes. And then, between her giggles, she calls out once more and makes a few gestures with her hands....

...and that's when Samrod strikes. Her gestures suggest that she has no apparent intention of yielding as ordered by the desert warrior, so he takes a swipe at her with his sharp-clawed gauntlet. Deep in her concentration, she fails to dodge the swipe and Samrods claws deliver a devastating rend opening deep wounds in her chest. Her smooth skin blackens and begins to smoke as the searing hot claws dig deep. An ear-piercing scream of anguish escapes her throat as she falls to the ground lying still....

Then her body begins to twist and distort in horrendous fashion, bulges emerge and her skin darkens and turns into greenish scales, as form slowly reverts to its original misshaped form in death.

Mechanics

She barely survived Samrods double damage, but the cinderclaw gauntlet also deals fire damage, which was just enough to put her down for good. Poor girl...

"Damn it, it ran!" Cirmaran cried. "It'll be back, if we're not careful. We need to bury the pillar and be as far from here as we can manage," he continued.

The elf heaved a sigh of relief when he saw the fiend fall. Calling to his friends as he came out of the bush, he said, "Well, now that THAT's done... we should make sure the pillar is as useless as possible for the cultists, and I daresay the hide of these fiends will be of use. They appeared to have quite a bit of inherent magical power."

Seems we're out of combat now... Cirmaran's plan is still to use the table as a bulldozer (leveraging his Lifting Belt to the max) and refill as much of the pit as possible before leaving (accounting for the spiders in the spoil).

Since the others seem to have an idea of HOW to disable the pillar to the maximum extent, Cirmaran will focus on skinning the things. I sent Abber a proposal for Cloaks of Elvenkind made of their hide... :)

Samrod was hoping for the strange creature to surrender, but it does not. Instead, being at least trained in the craft of spellcasting, he realises that it attempts to cast a spell. Immediately, Samrod lashes out to try and disrupt the casting...

[Attack roll result see OOC threat, to-hit 34, damage 12. Aaand +5 fire damage because Cinderclaw Gauntlet... ]

... and his metal claws raking the creature's flesh also burn it as the gauntlet's infused fire magic triggers. And that, apparently, is enough to overtax the critter's grasp on life and it drops dead, reverting to its original form. Samrod is a bit taken aback, he meant to threaten, not kill...

"I... I did not mean to kill. But it tried to cast a spell of some sort. I had to do something!"

"It certainly looked like spellcasting to me, hardly an act of surrender." Boradur tactfully doesn't mention one thought that occurs to him, there are spells to translate languages. Still, really, what are the chances out of all the spells that exist that she would be casting one of those? No, Samrod was absolutely right to strike the beast down. "Anyhow, Cirmaran is right, we need to make sure the totem is disabled and get back on the move. The faster we find and hit their sites, the less time they have to reinforce, and the less time they have to restore destroyed totems."

"Why did you?... why did you do that?"

Wilder hops off of Wednesday and runs to the creature writhing on the ground.

"Samrod, do you hold such disdain for shapeshifters that you would kill one who has already surrendered? What would... what would Renali think? What..."

"And you, so-called Doctor, put away that horrible weapon. I feel for your pain, but we are full and sated with death. How many times do we need to come to your rescue? How many people must die due to your recklessness?"

Wednesday then leans down to the creature. "I am sorry for your pain, and I am sorry that we disturbed you. Would that we met under different circumstances..."

Wednesday will try to perform battle medicine on the creature to heal it.

Genuinely distraught by Wilder's accusation, Samrod explains himself "Please, Wilder Effendi, I truly did not mean to kill, just stop it from casting a spell. I hold no more grudge against shapeshifters then any other beings, depending on their actions. You studied Dragons yourself, did you not? Surely you know that they sometimes assume the form of humanoids to walk among people, whether for purposes beneficial or nefarious.

That said, as harsh and bitter as it can be at times, in war there are very strict rules for what does and what does not constitute surrendering. Running away is not surrendering. Trying to stop bleeding is not surrendering. Unless the one doing the stopping is clearly marked as a non-combatant healer. Then only a true villain would not give them the benefit of doubt. But the rules are harsh for a reason, for there are those who suffer from the delusion of confusing mercy with weakness, and would commit such acts of perfidy to feign surrender to harm those who would spare them, even at the cost of their own lives. And since Boradur was able to identify this creature as one cleaving to Evil, I was not going to give it benefit of doubt."

"... That said, I am certain there must exist spells to allow communication between people who do not share a language. Even though my own meagre arcane skills are but those of a mere dabbler, I shall seek out those spells and avail myself to some scrolls maybe. Perhaps the Ekujae can help us in this regard."

That said, Samrod remembers that there is another issue that needs dealing with.

"As for you, Pendergrast Effendi, you are a fool and a dunce. But I pray that even a son of arrogance and delusion like yourself realises that squandering your host leaves you at the mercy of this jungle's denizens. Or rather, lack thereof. There are those who would gladly watch you walk off to your doom, but courtesy demands I at least offer  you to accompany us back to the safety of civilisation. There is a settlement just a few days of travel to the west, and you may even find it surprisingly easy to return to Taldan from there. But of course we can not force you to chose salvation over damnation."
