Helping to deal with the remains of the dragon pillar, Samrod wonders about the corpse under the surface of the pool, as Cirmaran points it out to the party. For a moment, it seems like the unlucky cultists drowned while trying to retrieve the lumps of gold, but then Samrod remembers that the two evil otherwordly creatures laired in the pool.

Also... "Not that we were going to refill our waterskins from that fetid pool to begin with, but now doubly so. Also... Boradur Effendi, if the gold of this mine is potentially poisoned with arsenic, would that also poison this pool maybe? If the cultists drank of the water, that would explain why they were so ill."

As for Pendergrast's suggestion, Samrod just shrugs and replies "You are not wrong, Effendi. But may I advise you ascertain how old the wood of these pillars actually is before ascribing centuries of age to them. It would be embarrassing if someone else were to do that for you and refute your findings."

When Wilder returns with news of Hezle's demise, Samrod shakes his head and says "We do seem to bring ill luck to kobolds. Pip and Zarf, now Hezle... And her tribe too, although their doom was sealed by us not meetin them maybe. At least the Brumblebashers seem to have gotten the better end of their deal."

With the cleaning up progressing, some interesting items are turned up. Samrod takes some interest in the set of scales, seeing that his father used something not dissimilar to this (albeit not nearly as ornate). Maybe it would make a nice returning-home-gift one day. As for the censer... Well, maybe his study of the arcane arts may pay off and he can identify the runes.

"That censer... may I take a closer look at it? I believe I have seen such censers before. In the halls of people better of then my family, mind... But yes, these runes and designs look vaguely familiar. I always wondered if they were magical in nature. Of course, as a mere child, I had no way of knowing. Now however..."

Taking some time, Samrod tries to make sense of the runes and inscriptions.

Edit: Technically, Identify Item is a secret check, but I'll just go ahead and roll.

Finding Hezzle's body hit Wilder particularly hard. He only wants to do good, to help people, not to bring harm to them. Still, he is used to things not going as he wants, so he stiffens his resolve and reports back to the group the items that he and Renali found.

"First: Someone who carries a lot maybe want the bag of holding?

2. And there's these expensive scales we can sell.

3. Hezzle's staff. This is unusual. Maybe it's something special.

4. A strange snake figure.

5. A brass censer on a chain.

6. Of course there is the totem. I know that our friend wants to study it, but I'd rather see it broken into pieces and then burned.

And let me see if I can identify any of these special items we found.."

Wealday, 11 Rova 4719, late afternoon

Cirmaran pulls out the withered mummified hand and waves it around to conjure forth a ghostly hand in midair. Upon his command it floats down to surface of the water and disappears beneath without making a ripple. Soon after it reappears, this time clutching a nugget of gold in its ghostly palm. Dropping it on the shore, it repeats the maneuver two more times until Cirmaran has successfully retrieved all three gold nuggets from the water.

While Cirmaran is busy, Samrod and Wilder pores over the uncovered items, trying to ascertain their properties. Samrod identifies the censer as a lesser thurible of revelation - an item often used for religious studies, but less useful outside the walls of monasteries and temples. It is a nice specimen, very old and may be of interest to a collector or a museum. The runes etched on its surface seems to be chthonian, but Samrod can't decipher their meaning.

Wilder is somewhat puzzled by the other objects - he can't really determine their properties, but he does establish that both the jade figurine and Helze's staff are magical in nature. The silver scale is more mundane, however artfully crafted.

Mechanics

I have decided to let detect magic take on some of the properties of read aura in a lesser version: You can cast detect magic as a one minute cantrip (instead of a two-action cast) if you touch the object - by doing that you can determine whether that particular object is enchanted or not. Ordinarily, detect magic can only determine whether a magical aura is present or not - and not whether a specific object is magical. But by taking enough time and move objects in and out of range of the detect magic spell, you can indirectly determined each objects magical nature. But that is just tedious to detail, so lets just assume that concentration for a short while can do the trick. Read aura can do a bit more - especially when heightened - so it still has a place.

It takes Samrod some time to identify the magical censer, as he first is mislead by his expectation about what to find. But once he realises, that the symbols have more of a spiritual bend then a mental one, things begin to make sense. Yes, the smoke of this censer is enchanted to calm, but not so much the mind then the spirit. This one caters more to those of a more religious bend.

"When I first saw this censer, it reminded me of the kind some richer merchants use to not just banish the... less pleasant odours of civilisation, but also inspire a sense of peace and calm. This one is similar, but it is meant to bring serenity. The piece of mind making one more open for the spiritual. One of those easily cost... I'll say, more then 500 silver easily, maybe more. There are some very old writings on it I can't decipher, maybe with an occult meaning. But only a true expert could tell", Samrod explains his findings.

"Wilder Effendi, if you wish I shall look over poor Hezle's staff for you?", he adds, ready to help his friend. Truly, a master of the magical arts like him ought to have a proper staff, all real wizards have one, if not several after all!

Wealday, 11 Rova 4719, late afternoon

Hezlesstaff.jpg.43eeb39db4c3bc8047cb2e244a89218c.jpgSamrod takes a look at Hezles staff, which appears to give Wilder a bit of a headache. He can immediately feel the warmth and power vibrate within. Studying the runes etched into the shaft he realises that this is a wizards staff enchanted to draw on the plane of fire. It is known among wielders of the arcane as a greater staff of fire.

As you pore over the wondrous items discovered, Dr. Pendergrast is busy studying the dragon pillar. He paid little heed to Samrods sensible suggestion that perhaps the "jungle totems" were not as ancient as he might think - even if he seems to have gained some measure of respect for your prowess in battle, apparently that respect does not seem to extend to matters of archaeology, of which he believes himself to be the undisputed master.

The gold nuggets have been salvaged from the pond - and you remember that Hezle had another batch of such lumps of gold in a leather pouch in her cabin, carefully handled while wearing gloves. An obvious question would be what to do with this gold?

The day is getting old as you comb through the mine and study the items found. The sun has already moved beyond the rim of the mine, leaving most of it in blessedly cool shade. You suspect that only about three or four hours of daylight remain.

It takes Samrod a while, but during his study of things both arcane and draconic, he did at least read about staffs. Hmm... yes, the description does fit, this must be a Staff of Fire.

"Wilder Effendi? I believe that Hezle's staff is the kind imbued with fire magic. Certainly fitting. Which spells exactly the staff is infused with, I can not say for certain. Although I believe you have a certain affinity for the element of fire. I'm sure, if you just go about empowering the staff during your preparations tomorrow, you should be able to intuitively grasp the spell matrices encoded into the staff. "

"Speaking of tomorrow, I advise we move well away from the mine before resting. We were fortunate to remain undetected so far, but there are certainly cultists moving between the mine and their stronghold to transport supplies and gold. The question is then, do we make a move to take down the last remaining pillars first, or do we deliver Pendergrast Effendi to civilisation first?"

"Ah, thank you Effendi Samrod. I think I'll give the staff a spin, see how it works out."

(Adding the staff to my inventory)

"Yep, I don't want to sleep in this camp, either."

"I certainly wouldn't mind sending Pendergrast elsewhere, but I really want to destroy these pillars. So I vote to try to finish the job we started."

Wilder will also cast healing spells to heal himself (see rolls below).

As the others study their loot and such, Boradur keeps himself busy watching over Pendergrast, alternating between chopping up parts of the totem he is finished studying and shoving the bodies in the mine into a burn pile fueled by bits of totem and chopped up beds from the bunkhouse. As they gather to wrap up and prepare to move out in search of a more hidden spot to camp, he lights the fire and hurries to join the others. The question of the gold comes up and Boradur thinks for a moment. "It is well known one does not drink water from a gold mine, at least not until it has been properly purified by a cleric but unless there is something very unusual here, the gold should be mostly safe to handle. Still better to use precautions, and I would prefer not to be the one to smelt it."

Wealday, 11 Rova 4719, Early evening

Much to Pendergrasts dismay, Boradur methodically demolishes the dragon pillar right under the archeologists nose. That Boradur graciously allows him to study the pillar first appears to be scant consolation. Not that the good doctor is very meticulous in his examinations - he seems to be more interested in its frightful visage than the symbols and runes embedded in the plinth. In fact, he seems to be more upset that his vision of a future exhibition to marvel the citizens of Taldor featuring a row of imposing jungle totems is shattered by each breaking of Boradurs hammer than the destruction of the artifact as such. But at this point, he knows better than to put up more than a feeble objection. When most of the dragon pillar is destroyed, he walks off to sulk in silence nearby.

At long last, you turn your backs on the cursed mine pit and use the last few hours of daylight to put some distance between yourselves and the open wound in the jungle. You follow the winding path through the jungle. Slowly, the stench of burning corpses leaves your nostrils and some distance from the reign of the marauding demon, the jungle once more becomes alive with the squawking of birds, the chirping of insects and the squealing of monkeys in the tree tops.

As dusk descends on the jungle, you reach the wide, lazy river flowing in a north-south direction. Pulled up on the shore is still Pendergrasts boat, right where he left it a few days ago. You are aware that another dragon pillar is hidden in the jungle covered hills not far from the opposite shore of the river. This is as good a place as any to make camp, and Renali gets to work, humming a rythmic melodious tune.

If you wish to do anything more before turning in, now is the time. The night passes uneventfully, and once you wake up, you have reached level 8! Congratulations!

This also means that the ARP kicks in. You receive a refund for the fundamental runes in your possession (as well as the few items rendered moot by the ARP, such as the doubling rings). If you would rather return the refund into a common pot for redistribution, let me know.

When you level up, you can also note down how much of a refund you gain.

As the sun sets, Samrod helps with setting up camp, keeping an eye on Pendergrast and his boat. The man needs supervision. For his own good of course.

"We should set watches. Now that we have an extra man to help, we could to watches in pairs. Suggestions?"

As the next morning dawns, Samrod goes to the river to wash up and relieve himself. He notes that the golden scales have crept up his arms a bit further, and his ankles have started to shed some skin for scales too. While his feet aren't quite that far along, his fingernails have definitely grown into something like draconic claws, sharp and pointy. While they do not really hinder him gripping things, they sure need some getting used too. At least the scales on his hand are resistant enough for him not to draw his own blood with them.

Also, the itching is now concentrated on his ankles and the part of his arm where skin loses ground to scales.

Contemplating his new claws before he goes about donning his hand-wraps, Samrod wonders "These sure look like they could do some damage in a fight. They feel like they can do so. I wonder... should I eschew the gauntlet in favour of this draconic gift... And of course, just how far will this keep going..."

Oathday, 12 Rova 4719, Early morning

The night passes uneventfully and you wake up the next morning refreshed and feeling more energized than ever. Contemplating the events of the past few days, you feel like you have delivered a fatal blow to the heart of the operations of the Cinderclaw cult in the Mwangi: Another dragon pillar has come down giving the Ekujae elves more freedom to roam their own territory and weakening the defenses of the cults stronghold even further. The mine has been shot down with the demise of their foreman and most of their mining crew. It is still a bit of a mystery what the purpose of the mining operation was - sure, a steady supply of gold is ever a big deal for any nefarious scheming, but the gold must be of a lower value do to the taint poisoning whoever handles the gold, and there is still the mystery of the connection to the Scarlet Triad that was alluded to in the papers left behind in Hezles hut. You recall the Scarlet Triad as the shadowy organisation, which had hired Voz to investigate the Citadel Altaerein and seek out Alsetas Portal Ring - the name keeps popping up everywhere you look - hardly a coincidence?

spacer.pngThe mine is down, but the Fortress of Sorrow remain, where the leader of the Cinderclaws, Belmazog, resides along with something or someone Hezle reverently referred to as the "Great Red". According to Hezles correspondence, the Fortress is supposedly surrounded by a protective shield powered by eight dragon pillars, of which two are still standing, helpfully marked on Hezles map. One is situated not far from the eastern shore of the river where you have camped overnight.

When Samrod pulls off his gauntlets and exposes his golden scaled - and sharp clawed - hands, Pendergrasts eyes grow wide with a mixture of shock and some kind of morbid curiosity. "By Abadar!", he exclaims, "What kind of fiendish devilry is this?!?". He looks around, shocked to find that everyone else are seemingly comfortable with one of their companions growing dragon scales and claws. He frowns and tries his best to keep his composure, "You seem to have been tainted by the draconic evil of the cultists - such a thing may happen if you spend too much time in close proximity to the corrupted devil-worshippers. I shall take you to Oppara - we have some of the finest chirurgeons of the Inner Sea region. I can't promise that your hands may be saved, but perhaps a pair of wooden prosthetics may be fashioned - have no fear!"
