The Stone Tooth

Chaz Hoosier

Recommended Posts

Two halflings approach once the battle is over. "We're Geradil and Courana. We've been prisoners here for gods-know-how long! We come from a village about a day away, we think, called Towerdell."

A peek into the Great Ulfe's quarters reveals a small chamber covered in poorly cured animal hides and illuminated by smoking torches in bronze sconces. The smell is indescribable. Besides the creature's filthy bedding and rotten remains of his meals you see two chests along the south wall.

Stepping over the dead ogre, Urd carefully searched the chests for potential dangers and/or locks. Was the ogre in possession of lost dwarven relics then? The very idea made Urd's skin crawl. But it would give her something to do while the others talked to the new arrivals...

I think I found your friends, Mr. Daurant, sir, Sugrin says playfully as he walks back down the hall with the two halflings in tow.

Upon introduction, he bows politely to them in greeting, pleased t' meet ya. He then turns and bows in the same manner to Daurant, and you, good sir. Sugrin Velicent, at your service. Illusions and other colorful curios and novelties are my specialty, he beams.

Brother Christo Vanleaf, Grey Elf Bard-Cleric

spacer.pngQUICK STATS:  AC=19+2, Touch=14, FF=17+2 / HP=19/19 / Init=2 / Saves: Fort=4, Reflex=5, Will = 6  _____________________________________________________________________________

Since no one was injured in the skirmish with the wolves and Ogre, Brother Vanleaf will take a moment to salvage the rope used on the pair of canines, as well as any salvageable arrows that survived the battle, as the residual effects of the Elf's bardic music boost expires of its own accord.

After his quick salvage job, Christo greets the newly arrived Halflings named Geradil and Courana by again introducing himself with a sincere smile and pleasant voice before drawing his long bow, nocking an arrow and positioning himself to provide perimeter security for the party watching and listening for the sight or sound of movement or anything unusual in the immediate area.

"Illusions an parlor tricks ya say? I be supposin tuskers be dull witted enough..."

He glances over Brother Vanleaf to Urd and notes her investigations approvingly.

"Should take what we can, aye, mayhap be searching the oaf's corpse too, but let us not tarry fer long. The tuskers be gathering soon enough and fighting em be no place for Geradil and Courana.

When you be done ransacking, cana ya lead us out the mountain? Be easier than me navigating alone."

The older halfling scratches his head as he tries to remember the rough journey from his home. "Aye, I am pretty sure I know the way. We would be terribly grateful for help getting home."

The chests are locked, though they are so old and the wood so decayed that Urd doesn't even have to pick them to jiggle them open. The chests contain treasure!

440 GP
1,600 SP
A potion of spider climbing
And a rapier of exceeding quality (a couple swings makes one fairly certain it's magical: +1)

The ogre's smelly corpse:

Set of Large Scalemail
A Huge greataxe

Gerbimble grins wide at the sight of the treasure. Not the one they came here for, but still, this trip could really be worth it.
He turns to the dwarf and the halflings. "We are not done exploring this place yet, but you are more than welcome to join us when we leave.
You could either wait here or tag along as we go."

Urd scowled. Her mindset was similar to Gerbimble, though, mainly she was worried about giving any remaining orcs the chance to go on the defensive in case they left. Besides, she didn't want to babysit obvious non-combatants in case there was trouble.

There was the secret passage they could hunker down in, but if there were any orcs left and they saw all the corpses, there was a risk they'd tear the fortress apart in looking for the culprits.

She sighed, shaking her head. "They were prisoners, Gerbimble -- they want to go home."

The gnome retorts with a puzzled look. "And now they are free. Free to go home, free to stay and free to join us, should they so want.
We have cleared the path back, unless the orcs have repopulated the halls. In which case, they will be alert and angry.
How far do you want to escort them, Urd?"
Gerbimble says with a shrug. "Do you want to take them safely home to their village a day from here or leave them at the gates and wish then luck, hoping they won't be met by a patrol in the wild, like we were?"

Brother Christo Vanleaf, Grey Elf Bard-Cleric

spacer.pngQUICK STATS:  AC=19+2, Touch=14, FF=17+2 / HP=19/19 / Init=2 / Saves: Fort=4, Reflex=5, Will = 6  _____________________________________________________________________________

Brother Vanleaf had been quiet so far and was focused on perimeter security as the Elven Priest stood watch over the party with his loaded long bow in hand, however when a slight dispute arose among the group the holy man contemplated and suggested a possible compromise.

"Brethren, perhaps meeting in the middle might be sufficient," Christo says in a sincere polite voice. Turning to the pair of Halflings, the minister asks, "Are you familiar enough with this region that you would know your way home if we got you out of this cave complex and to the trail leading here?"

"If so, we could escort them out of the cave as a group, or alternatively we could divide the group and have a couple of our stealthier folks take them out of here while the bulk of the party holds the orc room, falling back into the secret stairs if necessary," the padre suggests.

"It shouldn't take more than thirty to forty minutes round trip to get them out and point them to the trail. That would give the rest of the group time to move the treasure to the secure hidden stairs along with the merchant goods, to thoroughly search the Ogre room and to hide or dispose of the bodies if there is time," the cleric logically calculates.

"Then, by the time the stealthy group returns, we will have everything done and in place and will be ready to begin exploring this end of the cave near the Ogre room where we left off anew," the Grey Elf suggests with a sincere smile as a way to solve the problem, yet continue on with the mission, after all the treasure needed moved anyway which was no small feat.

Daurant, Holy Warrior of Moradin

image.jpeg.20b6e759626b7ffc84d6cc51e1d96b3e.jpegDaurant doesn't seem much moved by the sight of the riches, but he does nod approvingly at Urd's words. Listening to the elven priest, he then turns to the two hin.

"Freedom be naught but another leash if'n it be the freedom ta choose between a dragon and its lair. Tell us fair Geradil and Courana, cana ya make it home on yer own?

I suspect it be too risky with tuskers roaming the lands.

Come now brave souls, surly you'd not leave them prey to orcs or worse!?

A day there, a day back, a chance to spend yer newfound gold and my axes to aid you hew down any tuskers that stand in yer way when we return. These halls will be here still, solid as the mountain."

It's a good chance to get all this stuff out of here too, Sugrin waves a hand indicating the recovered loot and nods his agreement with the new Dwarf's suggestion of escorting the halflings to safety. If we lock up real good, maybe the tuskers won't find our secret passage, he says, smiling at Christo.

Brother Christo Vanleaf, Grey Elf Bard-Cleric

spacer.pngQUICK STATS:  AC=19+2, Touch=14, FF=17+2 / HP=19/19 / Init=2 / Saves: Fort=4, Reflex=5, Will = 6  _____________________________________________________________________________

Brother Vanleaf smiles and replies, "All I did was ask the Halflings if they know their way to their home. Since Surgrin and I have not been there before, we surely don't know the way."

"So, unless someone else has been there, it's basically up to them to show us the way anyhow. Hence, the question remains the most pertinent," the Elven holy man logically concludes.

Looking at the pair of Halflings, Christo sincerely smiles and politely asks again, "Do you know your way home or, alternatively, at least the name of a famous place or notable city near you home?"

Nodding at his old friend Sugrin, the Domain Priest smiles fondly and says, "Yes, we can escort them home and, in the process, can remove all of the magical items, plus the most valuable treasure and merchant goods which we found and which we can carry in order to get them out of here."

"The rest of the merchant goods, treasure and mundane equipment that we cannot carry could then be hidden in the secret stairs we found," the padre adds with a smile. "That would allow us to help the Halflings, remove the best treasure, spend some loot to re-equip in order to return and complete our missions," Christo says with a smile.

"If we also dump the bodies on the way out into the bottomless chasm, then any remaining 'Tuskers' might conclude that the missing goods were stolen by the missing orcs attacked the Ogre and his wolves and took it before leaving," he adds.

"They are not terribly smart and, if we cover our tracks, that might allow us to later sneak back in, take out the newly posted guards and return to our present exploration of the complex in an effort to both clear it for the bounty and to recover the missing merchant goods for the reward," the minister adds so the newcomers were aware of what the group is working toward.

Gerbimble shakes his head. He did not like the way the discussion was going.
"If we leave now, the rest of the lair will no doubt be alerted, and we might have trouble getting back in."
The gnome adresses the halflings.
"This was never a rescue mission, but I am more than happy to escort you back home afterwards. Also, after being captive, some time to recover, with decent food and water, could be just the thing you need before a long trek home."

The two halflings look between themselves as the crew discusses helping them. "Nevermind us, we'll make our way back." They return to the cell to gather their few possessions and ready to head out.
