Chapter 1: An Ill Guest Arrives

As Mickey sees the rifle swing in his direction, Mickey flattens himself onto Abigail's neck and plants a knee into her ribs, hoping to get out of the line of fire and close the distance.

Mechanics

Dodge the rifle attack.

On his turn, put his horse into a gallop to close the distance with the bandits (angling away so he's not charging directly at them). If that doesn't count as an action, he will use the All-Out Defense (Dodge) maneuver, bringing it to 10.

Hearing the curses and gunshots, Sloan wheels Shamrock around, kicks him in the ribs, and skedaddles it back over the ridge. "Hiya! Get to cover!," he shouts, ducking his head to keep as small a target as possible. Not that it will do any good at this range, Sloan pulls his pistol from its holster, just in case.

Necklaces made from human ears, notorious bandits returning from the dead, and a whole train knocked right off its tracks... Victoria has spent much of the journey trying to absorb it all, leaving her with very little to say. Perhaps once they come to know her better her fellow deputies will find themselves missing the silence.

...Assuming she doesn't get shot.

Victoria spurs her horse forward the instant she recognizes the rider in front of her doing the same. She shoulders her Winchester, fumbling with it twice - first from the gallop, then again as a bullet meant for Mickey whizzes past them like the world's angriest, deadliest horsefly.

Doing her best to focus in spite of inexperience and circumstance, Victoria steadies her gun and prepares to repay the man who'd shot at them for his polite greeting.

Mechanics

Victoria's horse Moves towards the derailed train, covering a full 12 yards of distance. (She sticks close to Mickey.)

Victoria Aims her Winchester at the bandit with the Henry rifle.

The hastier of the bandits, a young blonde man, curses his rashness as the rifle, shot from the hip, careens far wide of Mickey. He resets the butt of the rifle against his chest and begins to line up the sights. The second bandit wearing a stetson hat after retrieving a rifle also aims it at Victoria or Mickey, hard to tell in the furor of combat. And the most sluggish of the three, wearing a black bandanna on his head, scrambled in the dirt and came up with a rifle, but the barrel was far from pointed at any target.

in short

Blonde: aiming

Stetson: aiming

Bandanna: Readying

Victoria and Mickey close to 88 yards. The others remain at 100.

Once Sloan makes it back over the rise, he will dismount, move back to the rise in a crouch, using whatever meager cover there is, and re-examine the surrounding landscape, hoping to find a way to get a little closer to the fellers shootin' at them from the train.

I ain't much good with these here shootin' irons, but lemmie get up close an' I'll clean their clocks, he thinks to himself. Mebee them other two'll distract 'em enough that I can sneak up 'long side'em.

HP: 10/10 FP: 10/10

As the firefight commences, J.J. is startled to see Mickey and Victoria ride past him! Incensed, his nostrils flaring, he spurs his horse on after them, trying to make his way to one of the railroad cars behind the ambushers.

As he makes a mad dash towards the train, he takes aim at the exposed blonde cowpoke. He braces his Spencer Carbine against the pommel of his saddle, shoots... .. but he misses! Once the gambler finds cover, he will dismount and try to find a good position to set up with his Spencer carbine.

Shouting loudly enough so that the scavengers might hear him, he says, "Not ta' worry, compadres! The rest o' the posse is right behind us!"

Mechanics

J.J. rides Ole' Shoe hard and Moves towards the derailed train, covering a full 12 yards of distance. he takes aim and shoots at blondie.

Jellico takes aim with his Winchester whilst galloping along, then shakes his head, "Ain't no way I can make this shot riding like a banshee. Gotta dismount and do this proper."

Jellico sheathes his Winchester and gallops toward cover!

The three bandits looked around, heads rapidly swiveling too and from. It was pretty far so J.J. couldn't make out exactly what they were thinkin' or anything like that. But it wasn't calm or discipline that was for sure.

The two bandits who had been lining up their sights now returned their attention to the fray and pulled the trigger. Two gouts of orange flame emerged from their rifles and an instant later the crack of the shot echoed across the desert plains.

Their aim was hasty and imprecise, and the deputies could have sworn they heard a torrent of obscenity sound out as the bandits worked the actions on their rifles ejecting the spent brass on the hard desert ground.

crunch

Blonde: firing at J.J., aimed, effective range 100 yds including movement.

Stetson: firing at Jellico, aimed, also 100yds effective. Jellico takes full dodge (+2 to dodge roll)

Bandanna: aiming

At about 70 yards away from the bushwackers, J.J. suddenly reins in his horse and takes aim again at the exposed blonde cowpoke. He braces his Spencer Carbine against against his shoulder this time, aims then shoots... but he misses again!

After he shoots, he curses quietly to himself, then again races for a good position around the train cars behind the desperadoes to set up with his Spencer carbine.

Shouting loudly enough so that the scavengers might hear him, he says, "Hoo-hah! Sloan! Let the other deputies behind ya' know what's a-goin' on heyah! There'll be a hangin' tonight fer sure!"

Mechanics

J.J. stops, takes aim, and shoots at blondie. He then continues to ride Ole' Shoe hard and Moves towards the derailed train, covering another full 12 yards of distance.

Sloan eyes the surrounding country side and sees what looks like a dried out creek bed heading in the general direction of the train tracks, though not toward the train. He thinks this, combined with the general confusion of a gunfight, should allow him to make his way toward the bandits, albeit in a bit of a round-about fashion. He motions to any of his other companions that are still nearby where he is headed, and keeping his head ducked low, he spurs Shamrock back down the rise toward his target.

OOC

Riding toward the train tracks beyond the end of the train in hopes of possibly sneaking up a little closer.

Moving at full riding rate of 12.
