A shot well placed...

J.J. may not have been borne to violence. Maybe he had. Maybe all men were. But if he was not he had adapted well to that craft. The sharp report of the Spencer carbine and the bellowing forth of the black powder smoke was followed by a bestial howl of agony from the Stetson wearing desperado. Or formerly wearing, as the hat aforementioned tumbled from his head as he lurched from the impact. He staggers for a moment but remains upright. But then Stetson tosses his rifle to the ground and sinks to his knees. Hehas clearly had enough for one day. The other bandits turn but with Sloan and one of their number both effectively hors de combat, the odds seem favorable enough. For now.

Crunch: reduced to -6hp, he would rather surrender than fight to the bitter end.

Bandanna

The bandanna wearing brigand sees Sloan is hurt and not as great an immediate threat. Therefore, he turns and fires a shot at J.J., barely pausing to aim for the distance is meager at about 7 yards.

Blondie

He turns and begins to aim at Malakai.

Stetson

This bandit has had enough. He is content to be curled on the ground in some agony, clearly not posing a threat.

Malakai wasn't interested in killing. He'd seen plenty of blood and death during the war. Sent more than he fair share of lads into the great ever after. So when he sees Blondie spot him and start to take aim, the prospector shifts his sights just a little hoping to wing the bandit rather than kill him outright. A slow breath....and he squeezes the trigger.

Sloan "Sledgehand" Turlough pugilistSloan

HP: 2/13 FP: 11/11

Still reeling from the pain of being shot, Sloan spits on the ground and looks around, regaining his bearings. Well, ain't this the pits, he thinks to himself. The sound of gunshots and fighting slowly makes its way back into his ears and with one final shake, he makes a stubborn lunge toward Bandana, hitting him in the gut.

Mickey continues to close in on Blondie. He fires a loose shot at the bandit and hollers "Give it up, ye bastard!"

Mechanics

Move and Attack on Blondie. The objective is not to hit Blondie, but threaten him enough to get him to surrender. Move is 5, so I think he ends his move 2 yards away, which has no penalty. Base skill is 11, so I think adjusted skill is 7 (-4 from MaA).

Blondie astonished

Blondie stands up straight as if struck by a thunderbolt. The bullet had missed him but it had still gone exactly where Mickey had meant it to. Astonishment all but instantly gave way to terror. His rifle clattered to the desert floor from Blondie's now limp fingers. Nobody had ever said he was endowed with excessive intelligence, but he did have some aptitude at counting. One of his erstwhile partners lay on the gravelly sand desperately stoppering a wound that profused forth the red ichor of his life's blood. The other was in a boxing match with what Blondie thought was quite literally given the gunshot a bloody lunatic. A losing boxing match from the look of it. And was this newcomer the vanguard of some new posse? Enough for one day for poor Blondie, he thought.

The status of the train and its environs

But it was not yet time for the deputies and their new acquaintance to calmly assess the abandoned train. Stetson was in a bad way, Sloan was not looking too good either, and Bandanna hadn't quit just yet. Still, it was no great feat of frontier wisdom to realize that the last remaining desperado needed little more than an appraisal of his situation... Mickey also noticed his inert stick of dynamite lodged in the ground like some plinth left by a prophet ancient yet modern who had bestowed upon man the ability to split stone and the madness to us it to split flesh as well. Probably shouldn't leave that stuff all lying about.

mechanics

Basically, I'm looking for a reasonable effort to make Bandanna surrender if you will and then you have the now defeated bandits, one of them quite badly wounded, to figure out what to do with and a train to explore.

From his position crouched in the rocks, Malakai mutters under his breath as Blondie shifts aside just at the right moment to avoid his shot. Still, the feller was throwing in the towel, so he didn't give too much thought to the miss. Instead he tracks his rifle toward the only remaining desperado stubborn, or stupid, enough to think this was a fight he could walk away from.

"Best you give it up and throw out your gun partner." Malakai calls down to the bandana wearing scoundrel. "Unless'in you want to end up like that poor friend of yours waterin' the desert with his life blood."

To punctuate his point he snaps off another quick shot that pings off the rubble just a foot or so to the bandit's right. "That's just a warning to let you know I ain't foolin' around. Next one's going to sting ya more than a little."

Bandanna gives it up

And Malakai's threats punctuated by the smoky roar of his gun was threat enough for the last remaining bandit. Bandanna was bruised but alive, and he tossed his rifle to the ground and threw off his bandolier of ammunition. Then, he sat himself on a rock and just... stared. It wasn't us, wasn't me. Just for the money, just for the money, they hired us to hit the safe, and we did. Butchers, curse them, curse them, he stammered. Didn't get a coin mind you neither, that's why we're here.

As the desert wind blew away the sulfurous haze of gunsmoke from the train, the deputies began to see what Malakai had seen on his arrival. Several men in uniform, some with empty holsters, some without, all dead on the ground. Most were shot. One looked like he had perished from a nasty hatchet wound. Another had what looked to be his chest caved in by some brute instrument. All were missing their left ears.

The situation

All the bandits are out of the fight and Stetson won't bleed out unless you actively do him harm. The horse that was shot is still alive but badly out of sorts as being shot tends to do. What to make of all this...?

The fight over, Sloan staggers around, clutching the bleeding hole in his chest, looking around for something to be used as a bandage.

"Heya, any, uh, do you all, uh, umm, bandages? You, um, ahh, doctor?" is all he can stammer out before he sits down hard on the ground.

Seeing the last bandit toss his rifle aside, Malakai stands up. Tilting his own rifle up against his shoulder the prospector walks forward tipping his hat to those wearing the tin stars. Not being deputized, he doesn't bother much with the bandits now that the lead's stopped flying.

"Sorry to interfere, but was passing through on my way back to Arcadia and it looked like you fellers could use an extra gun." He says with a friendly smile and more than a little curiosity at the entire scene. But seeing Sloan sink back to the ground, his smile flattens. "I ain't a sawbones, but I did a bit of patchin' and sewin' during the war. I could take a look if you want."

22 hours ago, Bobcloclimar said:

Which fellers hired ye t'get what safe?" he asks.

Blondie starts to speak but Bandanna jabs him in the ribs. Apparently Bandanna was in the lead or thought himself to be.

Bandanna spoke in response,

Davy you buffoon hired us. You can see his ... signature on the bodies, he spat with disgust at this. He may have taken Davy's job but he had no love for the man. But he had taken the job.

We were just to break into the safe on the train. With the company and first class passenger's stuff. Just the safe, I did the breakin' and the other two kept a lookout. It was them that did the shootin', not us. We fell out with them shortly after because all this well it don't sit right with us. Davy must have left us go on purpose, only way it makes sense to me.

Obviously we didn't get our cut, so we came back to collect our due from the wreckage.

Malakai listens to the tale told by the men. He can't help but suppress a shiver and a look of disgust. "Rummagin' through the belongings of the dead is a mighty grim way to try and earn a living." He says to Blondie before kneeling down next to Sloan to take a look at the man's bullet wound. "Looks like all it really earned you is time in the pokey, unless these here deputies decide you ain't even worth draggin' back to town for a trial."

The sound of tearing fabric momentarily fills the air and he turns an old shirt from his pack into bandages.

"Name's Malakai, Malakai Wallace." The prospector says to Sloan as he splashes a bit a stale water from his canteen on the wound and bandage and then ties the latter around bullet hole. The job isn't neat, isn't sterile, and certainly isn't professional, but it at least slows the bleeding down a little. Not knowing much more to do, he steps back and nods at the wounded deputy. "Best I can do for you at the moment. But I reckin you'll want to get it checked out by the doc back in Arcadia right quick."

"Anything else I can do to help you fellers out?"
