Welcome to Empire!4 Reloaded! This is an offshoot of the Empire! series of play-by-post worldbuilding and nation building games. The current main title in this series is Minescratcher’s Empire!8. This offshoot game is aimed at recruiting newer players and giving them a classic Empire experience with a simpler and more archaic rule set. If you were a player in Empire 1, 2, 3, or 4, we love you but you are ineligible to play in Empire4! Reloaded.
We aim to recruit around 20 players, and recruiting will remain open until we do, though the game is scheduled to begin on May 26.
Setting
One hundred years ago, Dejan the Golden arrived at the site of his final conquest. He had fought in every corner of the known world; broke bread and bones with every people, and united them all under a single banner. His empire, powerful and vast, was to bring an eternal peace to the varied lands of Emjata - but it was not to be. On the eve of his final conquest he was struck down by a bolt of lightning from the sky, and since that day the Avakonian Empire has been in a spiral of decay and misfortune that has allowed new powers to spring to life, as well as the reassertion of the old that have been trampled by the great conqueror. Nobody knows why Dejan was smote by lightning: some say that he was struck down by the gods for his hubris. Others claim the powerful magic of a jealous rival. Others still whisper that in his great valiance he was uplifted to divinity itself, but with time the truth has only become more obscured.
Welcome to the lands of Emjata, where the world once conquered and ruled by the glorious Avakonian Empire has begun to fracture and collapse under the weight of its complexity and decadence. EMPIRE! has the player take on the role of a faction that controls land, resources, and military might over many generations of rulers, the form of which can be as you please. Forge history with and against your fellow powers! As this is a collaborative worldbuilding game, but also a social strategy game, be ready to fight while remembering not to tread on the enjoyment of other players.
Featuring warfare, intrigue, romance and politics, we encourage players to generally follow a tone befitting an analogous fall of the (fantasy) Roman Empire with the expected content being rated 16+. As the writer of your own faction, you may choose the general tone that your writing sets within this sphere. This game also uses a community discord server. Participation in the discord is not mandatory, but encouraged since a lot of political deals happen there.

Adventure Friends!
Welcome to the Realms of Mana, a rather simple fantasy world that follows five commandments:
- Demihumans Are Just Reskinned Humans. Some humans adapt and become demihumans; the only major differences between humans and demihumans are their cultures
- Magic and Might Are Equal. Mana is a path to many abilities, not all of them spells; non-spellcasters naturally burn Mana to perform feats of supernatural prowess
- Monsters Represent Themes. Each type of monster can be described in about a paragraph; they are more basic, more instinctual - caricatures of human characteristics
- A World of High Magic. Everyone is born with Mana, and anyone can become a spellcaster with enough effort; even common folk know a few cantrips to enhance their quality of life, showing how pervasive magic is throughout society
- Mana Propels the Battle Between Good and Evil. Mana and Dark Mana are natural energies that manifest themselves in different ways: Mana comes from within, but Dark Mana seduces us with its addictive qualities
The idea is straightforward: a party of adventurers - each with their own compelling backstories - travel the world, killing monsters, delving dungeons and pursuing each other's personal goals as a team. This isn't Skyrim where you have a "main story" you have to get through: the story is your character's story, and the stories of their friends and companions.
I run my games one arc at a time, which means once we complete a major chapter in the story, I step back and ask myself and my players if we would like to continue with the next arc of this campaign, or take a break from this world and explore a new game for a while. Don't worry: I've got a pretty interesting sci-fi setting just around the corner that you might be interested in then. ;)
Don't let me bog you down with extra details, though: just have fun and start making a character! :) Some parts of the world are left with space for you to develop new nations, new gods, or whatever else you need for your backstory, so be creative.

War. War never changes, and yet it changes everything. Ask the Romans and Carthaginians. Ask the Germans and Russians. Ask the Americans and Chinese.
There are those who’ll tell you the Great War started and ended in a matter of hours, but the war didn’t start when the nuclear codes were decrypted. It didn’t start when China invaded Alaska. It didn’t start when Germany invaded Poland, nor did it start when Persia invaded Greece.
It started the first time an ape killed another over a berry bush. It started the first time one cell consumed another in order to propagate.
As nations warred for resources in the middle of the 21st Century, the people opposed to war, those who believed it to be an inhuman force, did not go quietly. On the eve of atomic annihilation, the Northwest Commonwealth reeled from civil unrest. General strikes brought its largest cities to a standstill, and in smaller cities, peaceful demonstrations were met with violence.
Hate groups clashed with socialists, and police with anarchists. A new labor movement stood in stark contrast to rising nationalism, and a long history of renewable sources of energy contributed to the region’s objection to a war over petroleum.
In these last, desperate moments, their voices cried out for humanity to be different, but they were not spared the hellfire. The dream of change was reduced to cinders along with everything else, their pleas for peace silenced by a primal force predating humanity itself.
War never changes, but humanity does. In the wastes of the Pacific Northwest, the survivors of the Great War struggle to keep the flame of hope alive, haunted by the echoes of the world that was. Below, in the Vaults, the memories of those who fought for something better have been erased in favor of a new, more orderly world, kept separate from their true past - until fate intervened.
Now the denizens of one such Vault - Vault 18 - face their worst fears: their Vault is dying, its fusion generators damaged beyond repair and slowly irradiating the inhabitants. With not enough medicine to go around, the decision has been made to unseal the Vault, so that the residents can take their chances above ground.
The situation in Vault 18 has become untenable. After years - decades, really - of disrepair, the fusion generators have malfunctioned, and have been slowly making everybody sick. Some have died. Some have become so irradiated that they've become... something else. With no way to repair the generators, their water supply irreparably contaminated, and their stores of RadAway dwindling, the inhabitants no longer have any choice: the vault must open, and they must try to survive on the surface.
What will they find when the door opens? What remains of the old world? Did anyone survive, or will there only be dust and bones? One way or another, they're about to find out.
Whatever the challenges, the Vault Dwellers will need to find somewhere to settle. They'll need a source of food and water, shelter, and protection. Fortunately, they're well-educated, entrepreneurial, and spirited. They also know they're not far from where a city once stood: Spokan Falls. Hopefully they'll be able to find something in the ruins to help them survive - if something doesn't kill them, first.

In the world of Ossenheim, the veil between life and death is gossamer thin. Necromancy is not reviled here, but seen as a venerable art that honors the dead. Under the blessing of Revenor, the Skeleton King and Lord of the Dead, practiced necromancers ritualistically bind willing spirits to their preserved mortal remains. These undead, called revenants, retain their living memories and personality. They serve their descendants as revered ancestral guardians and guides.
Families keep the bones of their ancestors in crypts and mausoleums, awaiting the time when a necromancer may come to awaken their forebears. Though unnatural in strength and tirelessness, revenants are not mindless zombies. Rather, they are held to their purpose by magical contracts and familial piety. Most citizens of Ossenheim see their undead ancestors as a continuity with the past, not an abomination.
Balance is maintained between the realms of life and death by Ossenheim's pantheon of gods. Vita the Maiden nurtures the living while Revenor shepherds the dead. Mystic Mortus reads the unseen threads of destiny that govern both. Wise Lathos keeps records of history and ritual so that new generations of necromancers can safely follow their art. Caelo the Ever-Changing brings the seasons that shift the veil between realms with her storms and mists. And over all looms Tempus, measuring out every mortal life and unlife with his eternal scales.
Here in Ossenheim, time and tradition have reconciled mortality's impermanence with the enduring influence of ancestors. The customs of this land allow the bones of the past to support the present, and the present to honor the past in turn. Death is but the continuation of life's duties by other means.

Relics Of Izen
This Game will consist on Dnd 5E Basis with a Heavy Homebrew style to make it a much more unique game for the players and myself. An Example of this is that players will NOT have a class in the beginning it can be decided through their milestones in courses, their choices made, and sometimes even unforeseen situations. All skills are available to be used to everyone, Racial traits of whatever Race will be the same, and a bonus for skills from being from different nations will be applied as well when I distribute the Nations. Last but not least, there will be no Mana slots for naturally casting magic instead it will be replaced with Mana Pools, Ki Pools and other crazy methods. This game is to push boundaries of imagination and creativity to its limits while making a quality story. I only request players who are willing to see this game through the long term and will be dedicated to post as I put my best in to making this both a fun and unique game for each player's character. I ask for some patience and understanding if I tweak things around as we play to keep the game still challenging but still massively rewarding for smart and risky plays/ideas. The world which we know is but one of many, though few are aware of this fact and even fewer aware that they can be traversed by those with sufficient knowledge and the power to utilize it. Your characters are not among this elite crowd, rather they are individuals who have homes, friends, and family; perhaps adventurers, craftsmen, merchants, or any of a dozen other trades and professions. But while you're unaware of the theoretical underpinnings of the world or worlds, that fact will soon come to matter a great deal to you.
Mirror Worlds is a campaign that is set in no particular settings and all of them. Depending upon the path that the party takes, you could start in the Forgotten Realms and travel to Eberron, Greyhawk, or Rokugan-- or you could go significantly farther afield and end up in Star Wars or even ancient Earth. Any and all campaign settings and potentially even worlds that have never been adapted to D&D are possibilities and the sky doesn't even begin to describe your limits.

THE SETTING
Centuries ago, the Opidian Valley was the center of a powerful kingdom of yuan-ti, whose hubris and wickedness knew no bounds. They were such a blight that it is said that even the land they lived upon was disgusted by them. Their mighty kingdom fell into ruin about the same time their massive slave population rose up against them and killed nearly every yuan-ti in the Valley.
What was once a lush jungle has slowly transformed into a blasted, arid wasteland that continues to get less and less habitable. From the center out, the sands that now dominate the Valley are turning to salt, and within a few centuries, life within the Valley will become next to impossible. The Ophidian Valley is truly cursed, and when it goes, so too will the people that live in it.
The yuan-ti were watched carefully by their neighbors as a dangerous enemy that had no qualms against raiding and enslaving anyone who came too close. With the wicked snakemen scattered, the slaves filled a power vacuum and founded a confederacy of four city-states in the south near the Dambia River. The confederacy quickly established itself as a mercantile power, largely because of their laissez farie laws and primitive firearms they had developed. As one of the world’s few sources of these weapons of war, people paid handsomely for their manufacture. Despite a general lack of resources and a limited capacity for agriculture, business has always been good in the Valley.
But today, the people of the Valley have become complacent. Dark things from the latter centuries are organizing in the deep deserts to the north and soon the quarreling civilization will be overrun by creatures they had long since thought dead. And in the meantime, the Valley is a ripe opportunity for enterprising adventurers with equal parts daring-do and foolhardiness to carve a name for themselves in the blood and sand.

THE GAME
Ophidian Sands is a (if you'll pardon the unintentional pun) sandbox game using the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition ruleset. It's a sword and sorcery campaign with light survival elements in a homebrew setting. This is the second game I have run in this world, the original of which was with my face-to-face group. My intention was to create a shared world, where the setting provides a skeleton for players to insert their own ideas without too much fear of upsetting an overprotective DM. I expect each player group and I will take the world in a different place with each iteration.
So as such, it's incumbent upon you as a player to be invested in being creative and accommodating of others' creativity. The game won't go anywhere if your character isn't somewhat self-winding. You'll need to provide an impetus for your character to go forth and interact with the world. This will be a player-driven game. It's my job to take the various story threads the players craft, tie them together, and give them tension.

It's important that I be up front with you that I'm using this game to test a number of extensive house rules that are born out of a desire to tinker with Fifth Edition to satisfy my personal tastes. You can find those rules [ HERE ], and I don't want you to be surprised about mechanics you're used to not working the way you expect.

If that is a concern for you, I think my posting history speaks for itself, but feel free to do your homework on me to your satisfaction.
I have tried to be as explicit and thorough as I can so that this is as smooth a process as possible for you. To that end, I took the time to write up some policies and expectations from me you may wish to know about in the future. Hopefully, they will preemptively answer some common questions I have seen on game recruitment threads. You can find those [ HERE ].
I am looking for 4-6 (depending upon quality of application) players who are dedicated to a long term game that are proactive in their posting, easy to get along with, and overflowing with creativeness.
Yes, I will accept a new player to the system. I believe a prospective player with a strong character concept that ties in well with the setting will not have to worry overly much system mastery or optimization. It is far, far more important that you create an interesting person to roleplay.

The Setting
The Terran Mandate, a TL4 civilization, is the planetary government of Terra, additionally administering the dozen or so colonies scattered throughout the solar system. Life offworld is difficult with no faster-than-light travel or communication, no artificial gravity, and no psychics to speak of. The approximately 13.2 billion inhabitants of the homeworld live free, relatively peaceful lives where their basic human rights are protected by a liberal, laws-based government. Terra is just a few short generations away from enjoying post-scarcity, with the creation of true AI, portable fusion, genetic medicine, advanced robotics, and nano-fabrication already enabling feats previously dreamed of in science fiction. It's not uncommon for a person from this era to live about 150 years. The future could not look any brighter for humanity.
But things are about to get a lot darker.
Somewhere in Northern, irradiated Greenland, a madman plays with forces mankind was not meant to manipulate. Piercing the metadimensions was akin to jamming a needle into a balloon, except the balloon was reality and the resulting pop was cosmic in scale. In an instant, the psychic backlash killed two-thirds of humanity on the spot, their brains burned out by metadimensional energies. Many that survived were driven stark raving mad. The lucky ones found their civilization in ruins, buildings crumbled, infrastructure and communications gone, and contact with the off world colonies lost.
The 20 years that followed the Scream, as the event is now known, were a time of utter upheaval for Terra. Children were born with the deadly Metadimensional Extroversion Syndrome, alien flora and fauna appeared from Elsewhere, surface terrain was either reshaped or replaced entirely, and the artificial intelligences that made Mandate civilization possible had their minds corrupted into twisted facsimiles of their former purposes, enslaving and terrorizing humanity.
But after all that, the beating heart of humanity begins to thrum again.
Today, some 80 years after the Scream, people are no longer worried about their day-to-day survival as they were before. Instead of being focused inward, they're beginning to look outward to the brave, new world they need to re-tame. Free people today live in sheltered Enclaves scattered across the globe. These are usually independent settlements with varying levels of defense and infrastructure rebuilt, often with familiar pre-Mandate era names. Most, however, are sequestered in the city ruins, where mad machine intelligences hold sway. Tech from the Terran Mandate is available for all who have the will to scavenge it, and people can and do grow up in parts of the world that resemble (mostly) functional, approximations of life before the Scream--albeit with a bit of a techy frontiersman's twist to it. If humanity came that close to paradise once, it can certainly do it again. It just needs to shake off the consequence of the last attempt. Doing that's going to take the blood, sweat, and tears of exceptional people who can think further ahead than their next meal.

The Game
Themes: Exploration/Rediscovery & Man vs. Machine
Alas, Babylon is a sandbox game using the Stars Without Number Revised Edition ruleset, which you can find for free [ HERE ]. Despite the post-apocalyptic trappings, I don't actually intend for hard survival to be big parts of the campaign. Instead, humanity is more concerned with discovering and understanding the new ecology of the world and winning its freedom from powerful, insane AIs left over from the Mandate. It's a game about exploration and rebuilding. There's a sense of determination that humanity will find a way re-tame the planet, even though it will take a few more generations to do it.

House Rules
Most rules will be used as written. Major exceptions are with ability score generation via point-buy, ability modifiers, and skill points upon level up. A modification to ammunition encumbrance should make for a bit less bookkeeping. See the character creation thread for explanations of these changes and more.

Open thread: Safe Haven
Hi all, I am looking for a group of writers to create a storyline for a town with a marketplace and everything else that goes on in a town: harbour activity, clandestine stuff, schools, cloisters, monks, doctors (good ones or bad ones), gallows, outlaws, pubs, criminals, royalty, nobility... in short, you create a character who can live in Safe Haven. A soap, if you will. I am looking for regular writers, who can create posts with more than 5 sentences.
The story will start with Rosemary of Eldormere, who sails into town on a barge, which is her home but also is her apothecary. She has a 15 y.o. stray on board, Sergei, who is looking for his aunt Juniper de Nouvelle, but for the past 3 years they haven't been able to find her. Is Safe Haven the right town? Has anyone seen Juniper? In the meantime, Sergei has developed quite the skill for herbs and under Rosemary's guidance he has begun treating people for all sorts of ailments, most of the time with succesful results.
