As Falken spoke he continued to watch the forest. Even over the talk of the others and with the rain, Falken noticed that the trees were clear of birds, squirrels and other small creatures. Perhaps it was nothing, the small travelers of the forest disliked standing in the rain as much as any sensible person, but with the Mists and the Wightwatcher and the other unknowns of their situation, Falken was on edge and their absence felt ominous.

"Set, in case anyone missed it last night." And my, what a group this is. At the very least, the gloom outside is enough he has no need to shield his eyes, though he scrunches his face up at the sensation of rain on his skin nonetheless. Most of them choose to maintain relative silence- or at least, some modicum of composure, save for the loud one from the end of the night before.

Setare favors him with a blatant roll of his eyes before turning his gaze to their surroundings, fingers interlocking behind his head.

"It's a lucky thing though," he adds, eyes going from Falken, to Amelia to Rhortigern, "that I seem to be stuck with people who know the area. Better than I might in any case. I have to wonder if the mists have a sense of humor, along with being prone to displacing people on a whim."

He talks to fill the silence, because without something to distract him from it, he's going to give in to his nerves. His eyes scan the tree line again, pushing himself to try and see through the rain, just in case there's something hiding out in the dark, waiting for them to let their guard down just because of a little rain. After all, just because most people wouldn't go out in this doesn't mean most monsters wouldn't.

Falken smacked his lips, disappointed in himself. "Sorry folks, I tend to forget that not everyone has had the displeasure of surviving here for a while. I'll attempt to be brief."

He takes a deep breath before continuing.

"Those black trees, are nicknamed the sentries of death." Motioning to the ground, he adds: "It is said that their roots reach into the realm of the dead. I'm told this forest is haunted, and I never cared to validate that."

He then points to the West. "Lekar is indeed the only thing left that resembles civilization, but it's not great either. There you will find the leader of Falkovnia, General Vladeska Drakov. She is supported by her elite soldiers, the Talons. The Talons patrol the land, and everyone they see is drafted either into a soldier, or as labor."

The Human looks around the area. "This is a camping ground used by the Talons. They will move civilians to and from the East, where there's farmable land. The civilians are not going by choice, but it is one of the rare source of food remaining. Plus, there is the penalty for resisting. And you'll only resist once."

"Speaking of which, there is only one form of punishment for crime - any crime: impalement. You'll see plenty of those if you get near Lekar. And it doesn't take much for something to be called 'a crime'."

"So, if you want to go to Lekar, I suggest you lay low and don't draw attention to yourself." After a brief moment, he adds: "And don't think that spending some time there will be relaxing either, even if you manage to stay out of sight. There isn't enough beds for everyone and even less food; you can expect to be hungry."

Falken sighs heavily. "So, what's the alternative? You can keep roaming the land, but besides the occasional encounter with roaming undeads, there are also other weird creatures, and it's likely that they'll see you as their next meal."

He motions vaguely around, adding "It's also possible to hide in one of the many ruins of cities and villages that were destroyed by the hordes of zombies. With some luck, it's possible to avoid those undeads. Oh, and every full moon, those hordes come out to raid the land. Lekar has resisted so far because it's fortified, but they still lose a good number of civilians-drafted-into-soldiers in the process. At the same time, it's the largest population center, so it tends to attract the undead. And the next full moon is in about 2 weeks."

"So there you have it: be killed by roaming zombies, a zombie horde, killed by the enforcing arm of Drakov, or life of servitude and misery. So many great options to look forward to!" Hi sarcasm is accompanied by an expression of anger - clearly not amusement.

One last thought comes to the wearied man: "Oh! And people are still people! If you have something they need, they might not ask nicely. And people in Falkovnia need practically everything."

He lets out a final heavy sigh, his face clearly showing anger. His hand rises to cover his face, rubbing his eyes, then his beard, as he calms down. After a few moments, he says, calmly: "We need to think about gathering food..."

"So we've got forced military conscription or be impaled, the creatures of the night, and the wild to contend with," Illian said as he noted all of that in his head and sighed. He looked to the others, wiping the rain that had accumulated on his forehead and had begun to run down the middle of his face. "I agree this place, Lekar, doesn't sound like the best idea. Neither does being out in unfamiliar territory though. Though I trust Falken to guide us through these, Perilous, lands." Illian said with a smile.

"Whatever we decide to do we should move quickly. These roads are clearly used."

Karlov's riven face grows only more so as Falken talks. "I can see why Kelemvor tasked me with this cruel land. Challenge I asked for, and so I received," he growls and grumbles. "For all of Lekar's crimes though, it seems the land carries the more severe - these sentries of death as you call them have done a poor job."

 

He steps over the road, no longer drawn to follow it's creaking path to impalement. "My hands would be bound in this fortress of a city with how you describe it. If you are willing to guide us in the wilds and away from these Talons, many of our number would be better pleased. I would offer my talents in healing as payment for your service - quieting the undead is duty and comes free regardless" he bargains with the haggard old soldier.

 

"These outlying villages you speak of seem they would need the most help, and be the best place for those seeking evil to hide" he suggests. "Unless the rot stems from the heart..."

Setare watches the treeline, but saw little more than moving branches and rustling leaves. Everyone begins to knot up by the roadside as the discussion continues about where everyone should go. The clouds overhead continue to brighten, even as the rain continues to increase.

OOC

As everyone gathers near the road, everyone give me a fresh perception check. Beating DC 10 allows you to pick up a sudden crashing noise, like a tree falling among dense forest some distance away. You even notice a small flock of dark shadows of birds taking to wing in that same direction. Beating DC 20 allows you to also pick up the soft sound of what you think may be footsteps against the wooden paving of the road around the bend, roughly a quarter of a mile to the west. It's not necessarily that the source of the sound is trying to be quiet, but rather that it is still quite a bit off and masked by the sound of the rain and everyone talking.

"Right...", says Falken, having finally calmed down. He looks around, before adding: "We could head to Silbervas. It's probably as friendly as we'll find, and at least those there all agree on now drawing attention. We'll have to head West, then branch South before we..."

He's stopped mid-sentence as he suddenly turns to face the faint crashing noise. He reflexively grabs his longbow and loads an arrow.

"What was that?"

Truly, he is lucky.

Allowing the information to wash over him, Setare picks out pertinent bits to keep well in mind, long fingers toying absently with one of the straps of his pack.

"So, West it is," Setare begins amicably, pale mouth pulling into a grim smile. How friendly it actually is comes swiftly under suspicion, as his next words are said with irreverent good cheer. "Terribly glad we all agree. Because if anyone had tried to land us in a situation to be forcibly conscripted, I'd swiftly slit their throat and then my own." He won't be made someone's lapdog. Not now and not ever again. However he'd planned to soften that 'joke' however, swiftly flees his mind at the sound of something seemingly crashing down not far off.
 
Ah, Hells.

"And here I was hoping this walk would remain nice and quiet." He squints further in the direction of the sound, though his hand is slowly reaching for a blade. "Can anyone tell what that was, by chance?"

Illian didn't like the prospects that were ahead of them. At least Setare was honest, if not a tidbit worrisome.

When the scary-looking woman with weird weapons at her sides said she heard something Illian perked up, trying to hear anything above the noise of the rain and them. He heard nothing except the sound of a loud crash and then a flock of dark birds scattering in the same direction. Which was quickly dismissed as Amelia spoke.

"Footsteps? I can't hear anything over this damned weather. Any clue which direction they are coming from?" He said as he tried to see if there was anything in his eyesight.

Other: Second Wind | Sharpshooter

Falken's eyes widen at the mention of footsteps. "Everybody, hide!", he says quietly before turning towards the forest to the North. He hesitates a moment, curses with tight lips, then heads a few feet into the forest, enough to be hidden by the trees. He sets his backpack on the forest floor and hides, bow in hand, loaded with an arrow. Unfortunately, being in a haunted forest makes him uneasy and he does a poor job at hiding.
