By the time he returns his sight to the attackers, they're already upon him, although the first attack is sloppy and Falken easily dodges. But, the Human finds himself in a very uncomfortable position, as two undeads are within arm's reach. Fortunately, the combined fire and divine flames from Illian and Karlov dispatches the one to Falken's right. Uneasy in close quarters, Falken steps back, as the other zombie once more reaches over the log, but fails - again - miserably, as Falken loads another arrow, and fires at the one closest to Illian, who is now exposed and, at least in Falken's mind, more vulnerable than Karlov, who benefits from armor and shield. Unfortunately, the arrow goes astray, and Falken curses at himself for missing such an easy shot. Actions Moving 5' to J11. Attack Zombie C2, misses pathetically. The wounded survivor rushes towards Illian, it's boney and rotten fingers clutching as it flails! The two stalled by the log just a moment ago both clamber clumsily over the obstacle, flanking Kharlov and attempting to rip him asunder. The first to reach Kharlov lunged carelessly, which he was able to easily step out of the way of, but in so doing stepped directly into the flailing fist of the other. It cracked him hard across the face. The one stumbling for Illian likewise lunged and was able to clumsily tackle into the stalwart firecaster, staggering them both slightly and dumping the majority of the zombies nearly dead weight on the wizard. OOC Just to say it first, Rhort still has an action that happens before the zombie turn here, but the only thing that it would materially impact would be if he attacked and hit C3 for 4+ damage, in which case I will edit and we can just ignore the rolls dealing with Illian. I just had time to do this now during an overly long meeting, so here you go. C3 moves from J8 -> L8 (10') to close with Illian and attacks B2 moves from G10 -> G12 (20') over the difficult terrain of the tree and attacks Kharlov. C3 moves from H9 -> I10 (10') over the difficult terrain of the tree, flanking Kharlov and attacking. He waits barely enough time for Karlov to pass between the hunter and the hunted, and the cleric hears sound of the arrow right behind him. Unlike last time, however, Falken's aim is perfect; the arrow goes dead center into the zombie's skull, exiting on the other side, and the limp body falls to the grassy floor. Seeing that Karlov's armor did not protect him as much as Falken hoped it would, he conquers his fear and steps between the remaining zombies and his injured comrade, bracing for the undeads to charge. One of the zombies lurched for him only to suddenly be seized with apparently muscle spasms as it is splattered by Rhort's empowered blood. He deflects the other with his shield. Falken drops the one charging at Illian, while Amelia points her unusual weapon at the spasming monster before momentarily vanishing behind a puff of smoke. The staggered zombie bounces off of Karlov's shield and spins almost fully around before pitching forward in a full moaning charge at Rhort. The blood hunder deftly deflected the clumsy attack. Setare carefully held his position, watching for anything brought by the sound of the sudden combat. Almost as if on cue, a thunderous roar, terribly wet and rough, echoed through the trees to the north. Trees shuddered and dark birds took wing in against the rain. As if in response to the roar, thunder rumbled ominously over head. OOC C2 is dead (again). B2 moves from G12 to E10 (10 move) and attacks Rhort with a smash, missing. C3 stands there spasming and thrashing. An ominous roar from the north indicates that a new threat is entering the combat very soon. He doesn't understand why one of them doesn't move at all, but he's not going to make a big deal about it. He looks to the North as the roar can be heard, before cursing, again, and returning his sight on the targets. In the heat of the moment, he decides that Rhort is the one needing help at this time. Unfortunately, he can't help but keep an eye North, and his arrow strikes a branch before reaching his target. Lastly, he retreats back in the wood, rejoining Karlov. "Are you ok?" But the one core appears rooted in place, and the other mindlessly attacks the branded Rhotigern in lieu of following. He coughs, eying blood-flecked spittle critically as Falken asks how he does. "I've been better," he replies laconically, "but the grave does not call me yet." He stares at the rooted zombie the bullet that blasted through its body ignored, and mutters a psalm under his breath, "You are summoned back to the grave, lost soul." A bell tolls, deeply, around the zombies head and the decay of its spasming body rapidly accelerates. Through the wave of flames one of the shambling creatures broke out of the fire, finding Illian off guard. Illian felt the creatures weight hit his body, the breath nearly taken out of his lungs as he stumbled backward. The undead had enough power to bypass his magic and Illian had little time to recover. Luck would seem to be on his side though as a an arrow from Falken's bow planted itself in the creatures head, dropping it dead at Illian's feet. Regaining his composure Illian ran a few feet back to the tree line and shot a bolt of his own at one of the undead that had taken some damage. "Foti Vleg" Illian spoke the incantation, using his hands and fingers to form an arcane symbol. A ball of fire no bigger than a baseball sparked to life in the space in front of his hands. In an instant it streaked forward towards the undead. He hits it fairly solidly, but then turns his attention in the direction he'd heard the noise, trying valiantly to see through the rain. Anthr4xus Posted November 24, 2023 Author Clone Share Posted November 24, 2023 (edited) As the zombie rushes at him, Rhortigern takes a defense stance, actively dodging the monstrosity even as Setare sinks an arrow into its back. It clumsily trips over its own feet, doing more damage to a random tree than anything else. The one that was still standing by the log, just spasming and thrashing, is cut down by the combined efforts of the rest of the group, collapsing to a pile of flesh and bones. The group sighs a breath of relief, having gotten the situation of the sudden zombie attack under control. Nervous eyes were still turned north, and thus it was with more of a sense of horror and fear, than any sense of surprise, that froze our stalwart group of heroes as a massive brown bear, half of its face missing, and entrails caked with mud and leaves dragging the ground beneath it. The trees around it shuddered as it came charging full bore out of the woods to the north. It screamed as it dashed forward, the foul wetness and proximity clouding the group in a more palpable stench of death than even the other zombies had. Recklessly charging forward, the zombie bear crashes into the tree currently sheltering Illian and Lady Amelia, while also coming within easy reach of Setare. It's eyes, both the dead white one and the missing one, glow with a faint baleful red light and maggoty mucus drips from it's jaws. OOC Zombie B2 attacks Rhort with disadvantage due to Rhort's default dodge action and misses terribly. Zombie Bear charges into the scene from the north and Dashes to get in range of the most living people. For the purposes of this battle the Zombie Bear will join the Zombie initiative, so nothing needs to change in regards to our current order.
