I don't think it is wise to send a couple into a pack of were wolves." He offers, as he really doubts that the were wolves will want to talk. Most likely they will attack on sight.

Unfortunate as it is, eradication is the likely end no matter what option we choose. As for an ambush, if we could use the terrain to lure them into tight quarters where they will be forced to group up, fireballs will be just as effective as silver.”

But I also think Niko is right. We can't all go. Someone has to sneak and get to Tel! Someone has to cover Niko if she has to leave."

"I'm with the new fellow. We can fight now or fight later. Now, we can choose the ground, choose our time. Later... We won't have a choice. Unless they are here for a specific reason... But hard to imagine finding out what that is and staying alive in the meantime."

"Tel aint evil, Aaliyah. If you wanna judge 'im that based on that, then all the lot that has him is 'evil'. Choice a' goddess dont make or break what ya are. Kidnappin' aint exactly 'good'. Sneakin's fine, but they could smell us... Or me, 'least, when we got close." He shook his head. "Dun' think there's any chance to sneak in there. Could try maskin' scent, but even then, I need ta get bout hundred-twenty feet from 'im. Maybe we oughta tell Bernie. Town's close t'bein' 'is." The dwarf rubbed his chin. "...I s'pose iffen they had enough boats, they could sail inta the lake, and wait it out. Do they got enough, though?" He glanced at Kirit, then Niko. "Two dozen werewolves... Rough." He pulled out his dagger, playing with it abscentmindedly. "Iffen I could sacrifice the houses..." He finally said. "Scorched earth tactics may work. Gettin' em stuck in a tunnel... Like Library, but its too bloody far. Could evacuate usin' the Circle... But they oughta know about it." He sighed, then looked up. "Was gonna talk to ye all about the past, history, an' some of yer individual pasts but... Aint no time fer that now. We should visit Malenko. He may be interested in defendin' this place, fer some gold."

Barkvin tries to figure out what the plan is based on everyone's thoughts. Unfortunately he is no tactician. "Aye, well the town don't have enough boats for everyone to launch out. I say we attack before tomorrow night then. We might get the advantage of surprising them if we wait, but seems they will be easier to fight if we do it now." He recommends.

"This what I heard. A big giant wolfman got captured for a long time and had to turn people into werewolves. As soon as he could, he escaped. Now he's in a camp of people who might be werewolves but also might not. He has a priest he didn't beat up and kidnap and didn't rob because we have his stuff. He does have him tied up... but is that enough to kill two doz.. dozen? Ten..." she closes her eyes and tried to hide the fact she's moving her fingers along with her counting. "Twenty people. Twenty people deserve to die because one slave got free and tied up a priest that he didn't hurt. That is Gavan logic."

She needed a lesson. A cruel one, because if it was not served, then she might die next time. A cold voice concluded. "Are you prepared to let that belief be weighed against the lives of everyone here and in town? Do you believe you've that right?" Asked the dwarf, his accent fading. "Instead, we may become murderers. Perhaps. That lot is werewolves, and if Nikoletta is right and they are not natural-born, then Tel should be able to cure them of their affliction. He is at least as strong as Barkvin. Barkvin is also here. Between the two of them, maybe some of them can be saved from the Curse. Is that what they're doing, because of Iaeaus' desire to massacre them? Maybe. Or maybe they wish to infect as many as they can without him getting in the way; and killing a priest of the Umbra is bad luck. He absolutely did kidnap Tel, because he left a note where to find him. Full Moon is also in two days, and they're camped right beside a town, very unlike for any werewolf I've ever met, who hid away and entombed themselves when it was nearing. If a man with a knife is waiting outside your house, sharpening it, maybe he is friendly. Or maybe he's waiting for you to step outside and slit your throat. If you've a wife and child in the house, you'd not take the risk."

He waved his hand. "Regardless. If we can avoid a fight and murder while not risking the citizenry, ought to try. We have potentially two dozen werewolves, at least some who cannot turn, a captured priest, a town filled with innocents, and only 48 hours left, at best. We're not going to beat them in a straight fight if they turn, and I have no idea how quickly newly-infected can transform, same moon or not." He glanced at Nikoletta. "We've no reinforcements unless you want to ask Griselda to come - I dont - and a dragonborn werewolf which shouldnt exist." Murdain fell silent. "...Still, if Malenko has what I need, I can maybe find out why they took Tel and their plans by asking him remotely. Shouldnt be too expensive. Depending what we learn, if approaching the camp from downwind, I could try to teleport Tel out, or if hostile approach, their leader, so he is removed. The faster we know, the better. If we will be attacking them, then its best to not wait till full moon."

Aaliyah's heart felt plea wasn't something Niko was prepared for. Nor could she, in all honesty, dispute any of her logic. Her gut told her these men were werewolves and even if they didn't WANT to hurt people, they weren't locking themselves away and they must all know what the full moon will bring about. But DID they deserve to die?

 

"Aaliyah, your existence is truly a boon. I've no doubt in my soul that you are an indisputable force for good and you make this world less terrible simply by existing. Before you met me, I'd have never even considered staying my hand here. Werewolves are not evil by nature but they are cursed men. Whether they wish to harm others or not, they will and those who survive will be cursed to pay it forward to the next innocents. I do not kill them for revenge or justice but to spare their souls of what they will inevitably do. The children they were tear to pieces, the mothers they will leave for dead..."

 

She reaches a hand up over left shoulder and rubs it. The pain was back and she could feel the very old wound throbbing beneath her hand. What did she do now? This would hurt Aaliyah to not know, if they didn't even try. What if she was right? What if this wolf slave was just afraid? A broken slave, finally set free and hunted...

 

"We all agree, I believe, that we must warn this small town. Whatever comes next, they should flee or fortify - this is their choice to make. Does ANYONE dispute this much? Even you must agree to this, Aaliyah. Even if we choose slaughter, it is likely we fail and the howling comes tomorrow night. So first we set the town to do what it chooses to do and warn that caravan leaving today to not stop for lunch or even to make camp tonight. They should force march to Empyrean's Rest and we should pay someone speedy to run ahead of them and warn the town a large pack is in the area."

 

"...and I wish to speak to Indominus, alone. If anyone here has even the slightest chance of approaching that camp peacefully and walking out without violence, it is me. Him and I... we've never met, we should. We've a lot of the same history and, as Aaliyah said, I killed his long time tormentor. We all helped but I took his head and that gives me a connection. The rest of you, I would ask, go downwind and approach the camp quietly and peacefully and wait for my signal. Murdain, I believe you can stay in touch with me?" She didn't really WANT to give them benefit of the doubt but she couldn't live with herself if she didn't try, not with those green eyes staring at her. "I admit this would be quite the time for Souris to still be here..."

"...I need to be nearby, and I need to see you to do it." Murdain finally replied. "I'll do what I can to mask my scent and blend into the surroundings. I'm fine with letting you try talking first." Because after all, its you. "Alternatively, I can wait nearby, visible. I am not a stranger to the curse, either. And... Though I've never met him, either, I need to talk to him, as well. My mother freed him. If he has even a shred of honor, there might be a chance. Else, I may learn something of her."

The dwarf paused, then looked at the huntress again. "If one of the infects someone in town, and it is full moon, will they transform there and then?"

“Ah, I’ve just had an idea. If you all could adequately describe this Tel person, I could prepare a sending and try to speak with him. The message would be 25 words or less on both ends, but we may be able to figure out more about these bandits’ intentions.”

"Thats the spell I was going to use. I'm sure Malenko's got a scroll..." Murdain tapped his chin, grimacing. "Tel's a wiry looking old man, skeletal almost. Skins' a bit tan, weather-beaten. Receding hairline, short silver hair. Wears ankle length robes that look like they were gold trim once but they're greyish with a sickly yellow. Terrible music tone. Had a self-made staff he picked up somewhere and cleaned. Wasnt afraid of death. Bit jumpy though."
