Luce, alarmed by the notion that the thing might not find rock too much of an obstacle, uses a portion of her stored alteration to activate her 'mind over gravity' ability and takes to the air. Her previously cast Haste spell assists in putting some distance on her move. She gently circles upwards in lazy arcs to a height of 40 feet, well aware that her flying skill is not the greatest. "Might want to divide up the tentacles." she remarks as she lifts off.

Ilya

Ilya with her rifleIlya takes the opposite tack to Luce's. She brings down her heel on the stone in a rhythmic pace, trying to attract the monster's attention. If it lives underground, it must sense vibrations.

"We need to keep it at the surface, otherwise we've failed."

At the same time, she hoists up her rifle again, shooting at one of the tentacles this time.

Her aim is true, and her empowered bullet blows up the tentacle to pieces.

“Oh undead you say? Why whatever shall we do?”, Sam said with a smile as he took his place and knelt down. Pulling a cigarette from his belt pouch he pulled his mask down and put the cigarette to his lips offering it to the sprite in his rifle to light and leaving it a second longer than mecesssey to let the magical flame take its fill before he tapped the rifle and whispering, “Time to work little one.”. The engraving the flame sprite lived in beginning to glow with the sprite’s fire and the engravings along the barrel and furniture flowing with a celestial light. He shouldered the bulky weapon speaking a soft prayer talking around the cigarette in his mouth as the smoke rose to the skies.
 

“May the divine celestial guide my hand, and the burning of its pure light smite thee.”, Sam smiled prayers, him who’d have thought: Then he sighted down the barrel and unleased a hail of flaming holy lead. His teammate's spells aiding him adding speed and surety to his hand. Guess it was time to put in the work and annihilate this undead man eating behemoth.

TJ took a deep breath as he quickly moved out on the skimrod. "Here goes nothing!". The skimrod drove straight at the emergent tentacle, with TJ zigzagging a bit as he came close, he varied the height too as much as possible as he snapped off a shot at the eel-like appendage, almost willing the bullet into a vulnerable spot.


OOC: Defensive Fighting as approach close to within 30'. a Swift action to use the evasive Legal Judgement, A grit point to use Deadeye Deed (Touch AC at 2nd range increment, -2 to hit). Also using Deadly Aim (-3 to hit, +6 damage) and spend a Grit Point for Up Close and Deadly for the +3d6 damage if he hits..

Evasive

Evasive: A shieldmarshal gains the evasion, uncanny dodge, and improved uncanny dodge abilities as a rogue of her class level. If he possesses rogue levels, these levels stack.

One tentacle is destroyed by Ilya's shot and Sam's first shot. A second tentacle takes the rest of Sam's shots and is destroyed. Timos's shot damages a third tentacle.

 

With a great shuddering sound the earth heaves and the beast arises from below. The great bulbous head sheds sandy earth as it emerges and exposes two great sunken black orbs that it has for eyes. The rubbery skin is desiccated and torn with visible stitching of steel cables sewing it up and making it whole. This thing is undead but is also visibly a crafted being. It is covered in arcane blasphemies of undead written in script and staked pins of arcane power dot it's surface fueling it's unholy unlife. Multiple tentacles unearth themselves totaling seven remaining appendages of deadly fury.

The tentacles closest to the rock stretch and slither across the rock outcropping striking at the party. It wallops the group but leaves Luce alone for now. Sam is struck twice.

Luce quietly comes to terms with the fact that her abilities were wholly unsuited to this fight. One massive creature, not many, having more reach than she by a margin that's hilarious and not having time to get warmed up.

Content to draw some fire for the moment, not having time to do anything else, she activates her Saltspray Ring, erects her mind barrier and flies towards the head, dropping down (but not touching the ground) to place her mist column between the thing's eyes and Sam and Ilyya, hoping to afford them the same concealment she benefits from. She finds she's not entirely able to do so, the tentacle right in front of the thing's face being the problem.

The rest of the company see Luce, pretty high up, suddenly disappear within a column of mist. This column of mist races over the rock and gets right in its face.

Move Action: 90' Swift Action: Mind Barrier, stops 20tpts lasts a round. Standard Action: Activate Ring.

Ilya

Ilya with her rifleIlya's mystic shield on Timos triggers, and speeds up her reaction, allowing to aim and fire twice at the attacking tentacle. This manifests as a shroud of sparks around her, gone in a blink.
Her bullets, not aimed as carefuly, do not penetrate deeply into the appendage, but they are enough to deflect the blow, affording some much needed safety for her fellow marshal.

With the main body finally in sight, she then switches her target, tracking one of the especially bright chains of eldritch runes. She doesn't know enough about necromancy to understand them, but a bullet may be able to disrupt the animating magic.

 

Mechanical actions

Intercepts (1/ free and 2/ immediate): if they hit, the corresponding attack vs Timos takes a -6 penalty, possibly making it miss.

 

Standard: fire a Deadly Shot, expending her martial focus

if it hits, the creature is blinded for 1 min (no save, but healing removes the condition).
As mentioned previously, this may be too powerful, so we could reduce the duration to 1 round or 1d4 rounds.

Sam gasped nearly dropping his rifle as the oddly dry tentacles of the great undead beast battered him about and then wrapped him up tight before beginning to squeeze.

 

“A little help!”, Sam gasped as his struggles proved futile and his armor creaked with him in it. The metal straining under the pressure of the behemoth tentacle. He can feel blood trickling from his ears, nose, and mouth, and then suddenly as if by a miracle he slipped from the tentacle and hit the ground in a roll.
 

his ribs obviously cracked if not shattered, he spit blood.
 

Sam was lost in the moment his reactions on auto pilot, all thoughts of trying to muster these individuals into a team and communicate tactics lost from his tongue as he quietly prayed for guidance before screaming his voice a raw roar as he brought up his rifle and worked the lever letting lose. The little sprite working double time and the bullets erupting with a small plume of fire as they exit the barrel and head towards their undead target.

With Sam's rifle blazing away and helpful attacks coming from the rest of the group, the massive head is torn to shreds. With a wailing cry the entire thing collapses. It takes a while to die (or redie depending on your point of view).

As the thing gives up the ghost, Luce emerges from the concealing mist which is just one of her defences. Flying around almost angelicly ... quite the display, she circles down smoothly to land next to the thing's head. She turns to look up at the sanctuary rock, then gives the company the thumbs up.

She shouts up at the others.. "I can attempt to 'speak with the thing' now that it's suffered the true death.", sounding relaxed, as well she might, having suffered neither bruise nor scratch. "This thing was 'constructed', so that'll be one of my five questions to it.". she adds, sounding quite clinical. "All in all it will take me ten minutes for the ritual.", she adds.

In the meantime, she begins examining the thing looking for clues as to how it was constructed and who constructed it. This thing was dangerous, whoever had built it was even more so.

Clinically sounding or not, Luce was stunned by Sam's devastating attacks on Undead. For a moment, she felt overshadowed, rendered insignificant. Then she remembered that she was company's mage. Her own strength was just how difficult she was to take down, how difficult she was to surprise and what her powers would now turn up.

So thinking she begins her examination, which combined her knowledge of the necromantic arts with acute perception. She wondered whether her ability to see life and death forces and invisible things woud come into play.

Ilya with her rifleIlya lets out a barking laugh when the beast crashes down, vanquished. It's not quite joy, but more a mix of surprise at their "easy" victory, and the adrenaline in her veins needing an outlet.

She shoots it a couple of times more, just because, then, rifle in one hand, heads to her non-flying companions to give them a hearty pat on the shoulder.

"That was some good shooting, my fellow Marshalls!

And Luce, thanks for the enspelling."

She gets close to the cadaver, coming to a stop next to the landed Luce and, taking out pen and paper, copies some of the symbols inscribed in its flesh.

"Go ahead, we'll cover you. Hopefully it doesn't have a brother nearby.

Well, that's the point, innit: it'd be good to know if it's a long-lost monster, or if its creator is alive and active, birthing new abominations on the regular."
