Murdain grunted as the creature's arm impacted his side, but the strike hadn't been deadly, nor affected his movement or his ability to strike. He flexed his free arm, then ducked, swirling his cloak to impede vision, and leapt backwards, running past Specter and towards Barkvin. While the monster was distracted with the orc, he could end it - far better than than dealing with two on his own and leaving this other one to fight the orc by itself. "Specter, pull back, we can kill them as they come." He threw a suggestion to the bard. He felt a bit bad for him, but these things were clearly not up to rational debate. Positioning himself near Barkvin, he stabbed at the monster engaged with him with his spectral blade. No wound appeared on the twig creature, no cuts nor stab wound, but as the azure sword sunk into its back, Murdain twisted it, the blade vanishing from his hand just as the monster sunk forward, falling towards Barkvin. Frowning in surprise, Murdain turned around, running back to the two creatures he left behind. "Lets see if it works the other way." Mutteered the dwarf, swinging his shortsword in a short arc, aiming at the neck of the creature. He doubted it had anything like a jugular, but if the sword went all the way through, it would likely be dead - why else even have a head - and if it flopped off and it survived, it would at least be disoriented. Much to his surprise, while the head did not fly off - he wasnt that strong - the creature visibly weakened and collapsed like a puppet with severed strings as the sword completed its arc. "Or not?"

The dire wolf nodded to the swordsman and the elf.  ~There are others in danger... follow.~ Came her mental instructions as she spun, her massive paws throwing earth as she tore off towards the sounds of battle further in the woods.  Bounding over underbrush and between the trees, the great beast found herself upon the edge of a campsite where more of these blighted creatures were assailing some men.  Perhaps they were who Ved was looking for, perhaps unfortunate passerbys, it did not matter, they were not allies of these creatures and she could only assume they did not deserve their ire.

Reaching out mentally in turn to the dwarf, the tiefling and then the orc,  she kept her messages simple:

@Diofant~Help comes stout one~ @Hammerfist~Help comes horned one~ @WolfBirch~Nice Hat~

Mechanics

Barkvin is too thin by far for an orc, with the pointy ears of an elf but he still has the tusks of an orc.  His skin is olive and his long hair a dark green color.  His clothes were obviously once fine swashbuckling apparel, but on closer inspection are well worn and poorly patched, except his fine boots.  A large hat with a yellow plume sits firmly on his head.  He wields a mace in one hand and has a small round buckler on the other arm with a golden sun, the symbol of the sun goddess painted  large and bright to cover the whole shield.

He rushes to one of the remaining twig creatures and with the help of a flaming sword of golden light that floats in the air, he makes his attack.  "Good work, me hearties, these stick things seem to fall easily to your blades." Then he gets an odd look on his face. "I think that dire wolf likes me hat.  Do you think she be tame?"  He asks.  His mace swings high, but the floating blade sweeps low and busts the stick figure into kindling.

Specter shook his head.  He had tried!  He always wanted to see if he could negotiate before things came to blows.  Of course, these creatures likely didn't understand anything he was saying.  Or doing.  Or...well, anything really.

And to think that he had been so nice!

The Tiefling was quick to retreat, not needing to be told twice after the fall back was announced.  Save the slashing for those that enjoyed it.  As Specter moved to a safer range, he sang a high pitched note, which, in addition to being epic and awesome, was a great way of poking fun at sticks.

"Hey, Twig Boy?  Yeah you!  I've seen stronger blades of grass.  What do you DO, exactly, other than die like a punk?"

@Rumrunner @TheGospel @Knave @WolfBirch @Diofant @Hammerfist

 The last of the blights go down but you quickly notice a new horror: the entire forest seems to be coming to life! More and more blights are appearing, stepping out of the trees themselves. All around you, more than two dozen of the creatures, all of the more stick looking variety, have already begun their approach. This cannot be the fate that befell the missing campers or the owner of the strange staff.

   OOC: So to expedite combat a bit, the Blights all have an armor class of 13 and 4 hit points. Feel 100% free to take the reigns on flavoring how you destroy them, if you destroy them. Expect to see this transparency a lot in zergy fights. I find it really helps PBP combat.

The dwarf's posture shifted slightly as he received the message. There was another like me here? Was his thought. He doubted if the message had come from the tiefling or the half-orc, though the direwolf galloping out onto the clearing was an alarming sight. Didnt seem immediately hostile. The stick-men? Not intelligent enough. Then, however unlikely the conclusion, it was the simplest one: the wolf spoke to him. Was it like... her? He'd not heard any such talent, but then, he had inherited his from somewhere. He would make a test of it - but later. That trick required concentration. With the half-orc and his sword and hammer finishing off the twig near him, and the bard hexing the one in front... Things were looking up - but not for long, as more of the critters burst out of the trees. He'd not expected they could do that; wasnt that harmful to the trees? He eyed the wolf. Even if it was her... or him, though he thought the message sounded feminine - it might have been a lie. Dire wolf or ...the other thing(though what, was it a giant then?), both were usually vicious. Best stay away until cleared up. He eyed the trio behind him over his shoulder. They were far enough away, and Barkvin could join him there. It also distanced him from two other groups, unless these things were unnaturally fast - and it didnt look like it. The dwarf swung at the monster in front, a flash of blue in his right hand, the twig-man falling, then twirled on the spot, blue from his left flying through the air towards the one behind him, as he ran towards them as the creature collapsed. "No time for words. Damn, I wish the campfire was still going!" He cursed, thinking that the creatures were of wood - maybe torches could dissuade them.

 "Uh oh, this just took a turn," Aaliyah complains as more and more blights begin appearing out of the trees. "Mister! Den MOMMA! There's more of them," she yells loudly, pulling a leaf from her belt and whispering profane words of occult magic over it. She flicks the leaf, now strong and firm, heavy enough to fly like a rock, towards the largest clumps of monsters. When it lands, it explodes into a booming wave of thunder.

 She looks behind her and sees more of the creatures and bolts towards Ved, hoping her warning gets her canine friend to safety before she's surrounded.

As the forest seemed to writhe with blights, Souris twisted and grabbed one between her jaws, snapping it into a hundred splinters as she stalked over to the larger gathering of them.  She hoped that Ved and Alliyah were alright, but had little real worry given how Ved had just dispatched four of the creatures with little real effort.

Ved looks shocked to see the green-haired elven woman unleashed a powerful blast that disintegrates a whole group of the monsters. She had seemed so defenceless until a moment ago. "Who are you?"

But he moves quickly to stand between her and the remaining monstrosities. She may be powerful, but she wasn't wearing armour. The blades fly again, this time in an esoteric pattern, unfamiliar even to those who are swordsmen. But he misjudges the attack - these aren't human enemies - and the blows fail to cut deeply.

Looking over and seeing the dire wolf tear one of the stick men to splinters, he was happy that his initial assessment was correct.  This was a she-wolf of good taste.  Barkvin was not the brightest candle int he box, but something occurred to him.  He called out to Murdain and Specter as he rushed over to the dwarf's side, magic blade following behind.  "Argh, me hearties.  By the earth goddess Terra, there be no end of sticks in the woods.  Even if we bust these up, there be plenty more twigs to take their place.  I be thinking that we should start making an exit from this evil place.  Eventually enough of them will over whelm us.He suggests while attempting to make more kindling.  This time his swings and the holy flaming sword both go wide and the quick little tree men easily avoid the onslaught.

Specter felt very happy that he had made the right decision by running east.  Yes.  He had gone the way of least resistance, and here he would be very saf.....SOLA'S ARSE THERE WERE MORE OF THEM!!!

"Let the record state that I wanted to stay at an inn!  Nature sucks sweaty donkey balls!  I hate the stirges, I hate the trees, I hate the..."

Oh, and now the wolf was calling him 'horned one'.  Better than horny one.  Specter got that all the time, and yes, each person who said it laughed like the joke had never, ever been told before.

Well, if the wolf DIDN'T want to kill him...

Specter pointed at the creatures engaged with the large beast and hummed one long, discordant note that flew towards the mass of twigs and sent blue light washing all over them!

The Tiefling produced a skull from his pack, a bizarre item that seemed to speak to Specter and allow him to channel his power.  Ancient, bleached by the sun, and with eyeless sockets staring back, it was a rather macabre sight for any observer.

Specter named him Lenny.  And he asked Lenny to tell him a special tale of magic that he might later use to help someone else.

Faerie Fire

Twigs O, P, and Q must Dex save 13 or they're illuminated in blue light and grant advantage to all.

Tale

Tale of the Traveler. The target gains temporary hit points equal to a roll of your Bardic Inspiration die + your bard level. While it has these temporary hit points, the target’s walking speed increases by 10 feet and it gains a +1 bonus to its AC.
