First Time Out

Randal sighs like a man pained.  "Good man, I am not abducting anyone.  I have good cause to doubt her word and no basis to accept yours.  I ask for a reasonable assurance that she will appear as promised, considering her string of broken promises, and you threaten mortal harm.  Shall I have you arrested for breaking the peace?  I will do so if that sword or any other weapon is drawn, and I have that authority and right in this city.  So, what will it be?  The stockade or an assurance of some sort?"  He says standing back so as to be out of sword-reach from any of the three.  His men, without drawing weapons, prepare themselves for action.  The passers by that stopped curious about the encounter step back also, clearing space for any potential action.  Caelyn looks around nervously, waiting.

Has she broken any laws? Are you here to arrest her? If not, then she owes you, nor anyone else any guarantees. And all you get is my word that I am escorting her to that pavilion and that I will be there when you arrive. If she stays, that is up to her.

Unless Randal states he is arresting her, then he will turn and direct Caelyn to continue.

"I will arrest both of you and you can explain it to the magistrate, if that is your preference.  You are disturbing the peace and I have a duty to maintain the peace.  Now I give you one more chance.  If I have to arrest you and you resist violently, then there will be other charges to explain to the magistrate,"  he looks even more smug like he is actually enjoying the prospect of arresting Ehrick and Caelyn.

Note

Remember this is a 'civilized' city.  The largest weapons being carried about are yours, Caelyn and Randal's rapiers, and the pole-arms of the Legionnaires.  Mst of the civilians about are carrying at best dirks and/or short bows and the only armor in sight is leather, again except for the legionnaires.  It is also a place of Law (if the city had an alignment it would be Lawful Neutral).  Even if he is wrongfully arresting you, he has that authority and it could take days or weeks to see a magistrate and be released without an apology.  If you kill people in the process of 'resisting arrest' then murder charges would be added...

Grrrr aagghhhh!

Ehrick slams his sword back in its sheath. He glances at Caelyn.

I am sorry lady, but I will not go against the law. Even if it is being wielded by an honor less orc who abuses it to force people to do his bidding.

He turns and glances at Randal as he finishes.

You have our word that the lady will be at the challenge spot. If you wish, send your toadies along with us to make sure she does not leave. Because I definitely do not trust you to bring her with you. Since your only real interest is to force a woman who has refused you, to stay with you.

He turns and addresses the crowd.

This is how your great law enforcers spend their time. Forcing unwilling women to stay with them. Don't you think their time would be better served catching the criminals that plague your beautiful city?

"I would hardly say 'plagued' by criminals, these good people are safe enough to be about their business unarmed, as you can see," Randal says turning in a wide circle with arms out to encompass the people about.  Most of them turn away and continue about their business, not interested in getting involved.  Facing Ehrick again, he says, "I find an escort acceptable.  These two upstanding and honorable gentlemen," he nominates two of his men.  "Will escort you to your encampment to ensure that you are safe and sound.  I will see you all at the appointed time."  He bows graciously and then steps away, no longer interfering with your departure.  His two men follow and have the decency to keep themselves apart from you, staying about 20 feet behind.

Once across the bridge and out of the Caelyn says in low voice, making sure it doesn't carry back to the escort.  "That was a dangerous game.  He is a small-minded man who revels in the power granted to him by his wealth and position.  If he had arrested us it would have been weeks if not months in the stockade while he delayed the magistrates."

Kaspar leans over and says in a low tone "Caelyn when we arrive at the camp site, I would like you to stand close to the encampment. If Randal insists on going through with this damn duel, i will oblige him, but you are not going to leave with him. I'm fairly certain your friend Lightbringer can assure that. Or is there another surprise going to drop on us?"

"Oh, I'm certain Anders can clear this up; I just hate bothering him with it," Caelyn replies with a shrug.  At a casual pace it is just about 30 minutes to the pavilion, still visible in the afternoon sun by the river.  As you approach you can see one of the pages exercising the horses, who are galloping around in a broad circle.  An alert man-at-arms waves to you in greeting.

OOC: Will pause again to see if you guys want to discuss anything on the journey.

Ehrick is quiet as they walk to the camp. He is fuming inside over Randals blatant abuse of his position and really wishes there was a way to remove him from it without resorting to killing the man. Once in camp he will escort Caelyn to Lightbringer's tent. As they stand around waiting he looks at Kaspar.

If given the option, you should make this another first blood match and not to the death. We have no idea how good this guy is with a sword. But considering he was more than willing for the duel, I would guess he is fairly good with lots of confidence. Hate to see you killed before we get a chance to get to know each other.

Kaspar looks at Ehrick appreciatively "I'll admit I'm loathe to die, before getting to know you better as well. Let's see how much his martial prowess will survive, when he finds himself suddenly outnumbered. I have the feeling he might be much more reasonable to talk to out here, than he was in Anchorhead."

the three do not have to go all the way to Lightbringer's tent as his men ran ahead to tell him of your arrival.  He steps out to greet you three by the make-shift table where lunch was served, with a smile.  Caelyn looks uncomfortable, almost embarrassed when he looks at her, though there is something else there also, a sort of pride.  "Gentlemen, thank you for assisting me in this task; it seems you have succeeded, though I do hope it was done discretely," he says by way of greeting.

Ehrick gives a short burst of laughter.

HA! Sorry Caelyn, but I begin to wonder if you go anywhere or do anything discretely.

Turning to Lightbringer.

We found her at a tavern and as I was introducing myself another group walked him and offered a large amount of money to whoever brought her to them. We managed to get away. We met up at the market. That is were the other two who went with us disappeared/ No idea where they are or what happened to them. Then as we are moving through the market trying to get her to you, another group pops up, points at her and yells to get her. We managed to get her away from them with only minor injuries. Then as we approach the East Gate her, self proclaimed lover, shows up and demands we hand her over. Kaspar mouthed off a bit and in about 30 minutes or so this guy Randal, who these two other guys work for, is going to show up for a duel with Kaspar as his honor was questioned. Which is a laugh, because I don't think the guy knows the meaning of the word. He is leader of the Guild law enforcement and uses his power to push others around. In this case is trying to force Caelyn to return to him and stay with him because he apparently loves her. He did mention some broken promises on her part, but we haven't had time to ask about those.

But here she is as you asked. Can we please collect our pay? And hopefully the duel is not to the death and Kaspar can spend his later.

Lightbringer looks at Caelyn exasperated, perhaps the first negative emotion you've seen on him.  "You instigated a duel between them?  Who is this Ambercrown?"

Caelyn puts her hands on her hips as though cross with him.  "A greeting first, don't you disrespect me.  Besides, why did you send them in anyway?  I'm confident I could have gotten out of the city on my own, eventually.  Ambercrown is a wealthy lout with connections, and I learned something from him," she says going through about three emotions as she speaks.  Lightbringer also runs through a few expressions before settling back to his calm and controlled norm.

Turning to Kaspar, he says, "I would be happy to adjudicate the duel, or to be your second if you have not already chosen."

Kaspar takes a deep bow towards Lightbringer "I would be honored. Personally I still hope the Gentleman in question will reconsider, seeing that he is now outnumbered. But one never knows with humans when ego is involved. But my guess is he will be somewhat sore about losing any chance of winning fair Caelyn"

"I'm afraid with the sensibilities around here avoiding the duel will be unlikely," Lightbringer says.  Then he turns his attention to Caelyn.  "You were remanded to my custody by King Philip.  If you hadn't run off before I could come and get you we wouldn't be here," he says to her, not chastising but with a certain exasperation.  Caelyn buffs a smudge off of his breastplate then takes up the bottle of wine that was on the table and a cup and pours herself one.

"I'm glad to see you are taking care of yourself, and not giving everything away to the poor,"  she says pointedly avoiding his comment.  Facing Ehrick and Kaspar, she says, "isn't he a good boy?"  With a mischievous grin that wrinkles her nose.

Kaspar smiles crookedly "I wish, i could disagree with you on that point. It felt like a good way of drawing his attention for Ehrick and Caelyn to slip away. Luckily the things I told him about swordmanship were true as well. I should have something like 30 years more experience than him, no brag just a fact."
