The Low Quarter (cont.)

Byll's listening uncovers nothing of concern, and the door yields readily to the first tug--a rarity, perhaps, in the semi-submerged ruins. The far side is an expansive hall, extending some 110 feet to the north (as the elves among the group can see) and 70 feet east-west. The ceiling is almost twenty feet high, vaulted with brick.

There is faint moonlight showing in the distant corners, let in by high, narrow windows on the east wall that would have overlooked the harbor in better times but now are translucent at best, choked with algae and growth. The walls were once magnificently tiled, but many of the tiles have cracked and fallen off. Any furniture or ornamentation of value was long ago removed.

There is a door in the east wall that might have led outside, but seems likely to be underground (at best). There is also a door near the northwest corner, and another near the southwest corner.

After being practically submerged for the better part of a day, the openness of the hall is almost breath-stealing. It had laid just beyond the door and yet they'd known not that it was there while they wallowed away waiting for wounds to heal and courage to rekindle. Byll sighed with far more weariness than he realized he had been carrying.

"This place woodda been quite brilliant." He uttered in minor anguish. He took a few steps around but did not dally or wander too far away. The first cracks of an otherwise haughty façade were starting to show.

"Spread out a bit, see to it that nothing in here doesn't go unclaimed." He snapped back with regal and pomp.

Karn looks over at Byll and salutes.

"Sure. I'll do that", he says with a smile.

Astaban does as Byll instructs. He fills in whatever position has the largest gap. His fatigue shows in his lack of verbal communication. He does his best to concentrate on the task at hand. He moves forward with the torch outstretched and dagger in his other hand.

Karn's sharp eyes are the first to notice an area that would otherwise have been obscured by normal tiles but, with cracks having formed, can now be seen to have different stonework behind the ornamented surface. The sighting is roughly mid-line on the west wall, knee-high for a man above the floor.

OK. I hope I don't have to redo this every time. Still need to figure out a way to do the stat block and sheet.

After examining it closely, Astaban feels confident there are no traps. The adjacent tiles could be carefully (or uncarefully) pried free with a crowbar or even a stout knife; or, they could just be shattered.

50808a9afe01a02070531e3b55fe89fc.jpgByll kept his distance for now. As some of the others huddled around whatever it was that had grabbed Karn's attention, there was no one to keep watch. The curiosity was palpable for the elf, but he knew that the moment that they were all distracted by the latest discovery, another skeletal beast would emerge from the shadows.

His patrol took him in a circular pattern around the huddled group. He dared a single glance in their direction when he saw an gap between them to see that it was something in the floor, but not much else.

"If it is a relic, remember not to break it in your enthusiasm." He doted as he continued his watchful round.

Carefully, tile by tile, Astaban exposes the hidden stone panel that had been covered up. The panel is roughly a foot on each side, with two-inch semi-circular holes that would make it easy to reach in and pull the panel free.

The panel comes free with only a bit of binding, requiring an extra tug here or there to get past a burr or sticky spot. The space behind is roughly cubic, and the torchlight from Byll's direction reveals the glint of gold: preserved against the elements, a chalice has been sealed up for centuries. With no airflow--no openings at all, really--the cup's condition is nearly pristine and there is practically no dust within the cache.

Now out in the open, the cup and its craftsmanship are visible to all. The exterior surface is etched with elvish runes, tracing geometric patterns around six oval-cut sapphires that are set at regular intervals an inch below the rim. The interior is empty and as perfectly clean as the rest of the vessel. It has only a single sigil inscribed in the bottom center of the bowl.
