With the decision made, Darhana took point and headed back to the point where they had stopped the evening before. There she checked the door the smoke had come out of for any sounds and if there were none, she would open it.

Empty Chamber

Devoid of any better ideas, the majority of the group follows Darhana back the other way to where they left off yesterday evening, where they had laid low the giant bombardier beetle.

 

Not a hell of a lot has changed since the night before, save that now the beetle's hemolymph has dried on the floor, and the room reeks of a very unpleasant smell of decomposition and decay.

The Pyre — Empty Chamber

Having had his first experience with that door the night prior, the suspicious rogue kept a step back as three of you lined up in front of it.

 

No sooner than the moment Darhana opens the door, black oily smoke begins billowing out from within just as it did the night before, tasting a nasty bitter and stinging the eyes.

The Pyre — The Shield Guardian

Just as Lars had hinted the night before, the stairs going down connects to a short hallway, at the end of which is another short flight of stairs going back up. At the top of those stairs is a rectangular room, tiered in the sense that the southern half of the chamber has a lowered floor, with stairs on either side to reach the bottom. Standing just off the south wall is a tall wooden statue of Alika Foxglove, grasping a gigantic wooden shield in each hand.

 

To the north is a recessed doorway, and there looks to be another toward the south just to one side of the statue.

Something doesn't look quite right. You notice that the pedestal upon which the statue stands seems to have a tiny seam around its edge from the rest of the stonework, as though it is floating free and not grouted to its neighbours.

 

The same looks to be true of the stairsteps.

The Pyre — The Shield Guardian

As Neskas and Snappy make their way down of the two short flights of stairs, the steps suddenly give under the riding dog's paw. The stairsteps rotate forty-five degrees, turning each flight of stairs into a long slide. South of them, the statue steps forward, suddenly taking on a semblance of life all on its own.
