Backstory:
Grommash was born into the heart of the Technocracy, in a family of dwarven artificers who had dedicated their lives to the Artificers Guild. Grommash’s ancestors were revered for their innovative creations and their contributions to the guild, and Grommash was no different. He did not focus on frivolous things like intricate fashion designs or wasting material on unnecessary paint.  But his hard work and impressive creative abilities caught the eye of many senior members, and he was repeatedly submitted for promotions and advancements in his career. However, he declined these offers, preferring to work on his own projects rather than deal with the bureaucracy and politics of the guild.

As Grommash grew older, his frustration with the Artificers Guild grew, and he began to yearn for a way to work on his projects without the distractions of office politics. He devised a plan to create a floating forge powered by the energy of a star, a feat that had never been accomplished before. To his surprise, the senate agreed to support him, and Grommash was able to build his floating forge.  When the forge was complete there was a great celebration.  Not wanting to waste anymore time with these unnecessary interruptions, Grommash launched the float mid presentation.

Grommash's first order of business was to create a helper that would not speak or distract him from his work. He named his creation Gundin, a humanoid with four arms to assist him in his work. Together, Grommash and Gundin worked tirelessly, testing theories and refining their techniques.  The years flew by as the forge drifted through space.

Over time their work was interrupted by various threats, including space pirates, governing factions and their annoying regulations, and scrappers picking away at his valuable materials. However, the most significant threat came from the fiendish hordes that attacked their floating forge. Grommash and Gundin fought bravely, but they were overwhelmed by the endless waves of fiends. In a final act of defiance, Grommash turned the forge into a floating bomb and destroyed the fiends' warship. Despite his victory, Grommash was left with a sinking feeling that all his life's work had been destroyed.

Returning to civilization after years of solitude, Grommash found it difficult to reintegrate. He had become rough around the edges, and his unconventional way of talking to Gundin, who he treated as an individual, often made others uncomfortable. Despite the challenges, Grommash was determined to keep creating and forge a new path for himself.  Maybe in this new life there would be new friends and a ship....

That is an interesting looking contraption! Neat. The background seems fun, too.

It trails off before intersecting with the party. We could say he heard one of the ancient Elader space stations had been uncovered and sought it out? They were both renowned builders and the strongest line of defense against the fiends in their day, making this a natural pilgrimage for him to make. On arrival he finds other dwarves among those preparing for an expedition into the gate to try and strike back against the fiends. Naturally he'd be interested in joining. Thoughts?

  • 2 weeks later...

@Morph3us we checked with him and he said he was working on it yesterday. Hopefully we can move into an intro scene this week! I can't wait to see how this station changes now that it's got people living in it.

I think I have a couple items to shop for still. But I can get that done today.

Do the new guys get any starting cash/and or any magic items?

Good question!

The DMG has a table for starting at higher levels. For 5-10 it suggests normal starting equipment + 500 GP + 1d10x25 GP + 1 uncommon magic item.

The existing PCs just got 1000 GP to help fund equipment for their expedition. And we are not at the beginning of this tier anymore.

So, I think we can round up to 1000 GP to match, and let the new people have that magic item as well.

Sincere apologies for the delay. It is time to meet Branek.

Name: Branek Goldbeard

Race: Mountain Dwarf

Class: Paladin

Oath: Oath of the Watchers

Background Story:

Branek Goldbeard, a Mountain Dwarf with a troubled past, was raised in a dwarven clan known for their mining prowess and deep connections to the earth. From a young age, Branek experienced haunting visions and heard unsettling whispers that seemed to originate from beyond the mortal realm. These encounters filled his childhood with fear and uncertainty, isolating him from his peers and family.

However, fate intervened when members of the Order of the Watchers, a group of paladins dedicated to protecting the mortal realm from the machinations of fiends, discovered Branek. Recognizing his unique interaction with unseen forces, they saw the potential for him to become a powerful defender against the encroaching darkness.

Under the guidance of the Order, Branek underwent rigorous training to harness and control his abilities. They taught him to channel his connection with the divine and the unseen, transforming him into a stalwart inquisitor, sworn to uncover and eradicate the influence of fiends in the world.

Branek's golden-colored beard, a distinctive trait inherited from his lineage, became a symbol of his chosen path. It served as a reminder of the divine light he sought to bring into the darkest corners of the world. Clad in sturdy armor and wielding a mighty warhammer, Branek ventured forth as a beacon of justice, ready to confront the malevolent forces that threatened the innocent.

Recently, the Order has received a vision or prophecy indicating that the destiny of the Dawnbringer, a renowned ship sailing the seas, intertwines with the evils Branek seeks to push back. Guided by this revelation, he has been sent to investigate the ship and its crew, believing that their path will intersect with the forces he is sworn to combat.

Determined and resolute, Branek Goldbeard sails towards the horizon, fueled by his devotion to protect the mortal realm from the encroaching darkness and fulfill his sacred duty as an inquisitor of the Watchers.

Oh nice!

Seems like a good tie in with searching for clues about the dawnbringer, maybe Branek heard rumors of an expedition to find the ship, which brought him to the station? Would be cool for Al-Tammar to maybe organize a meeting between Bhalgurn and Kutaeg and a couple new hopefuls on the station to see if they'd be a good fit in the party.

Sure! One note to start with about the setting:

After reading it again I'm pretty sure you aren't using "sea" and "sail" as a metaphor. FYI the ships we're talking about are starsailers, not ocean vessels. The party has been exploring a galaxy zooming between stars.

Many dwarves live in massive citadel ships that are analagous to the mountain homes of traditional fantasy dwarves. The galaxy is a big place, though, so it's totally possible for Branek to have grown up in a terrestrial clan.
