Before Alandri could say anything to Silas, that same flushed look returned to the elven sorcerer's face from earlier. Mumbling something that sounded like an apology, he clumsily thrust the pouch of 20 gold pieces given to him by Esi Djana and Haibram Thodja into Thandeka's hands, then disappeared into the crowds as if he were making his way towards Magaambaya.

Startled by this sudden turn of events, the young priestess of Sarenrae almost starts to follow him, but falters, then turns to the others for some sort of guidance. As they all seemed to look expectantly at her, the tall girl shrugs her shoulders awkwardly and tries to smile apologetically. Remembering that she did promise Esi and Haibram that she would help carry out their assigned task, Thandeka judges that Alandri would survive his current discomfort as he had earlier. For now, best to focus on the job at hand.

Straightening her shoulders and clearing her throat dramatically, she whispers sotto voce to the catfolk thaumaturge, "Silas, please remember that we were told to obtain a breeding pair of Ojofiri chickens but the more hens we can get, the better. We were also told to get at least four chicks. At 4gp apiece, we would need at least 24gp and we only have 20. Now with Alandri gone, I'm afraid that you're the only one of us who has a chance of talking this merchant down to a reasonable price. Please, Silas. Help us complete our mission. When it comes to matters of trade, you are the best."

DESCRIPTION Lilly is a small, slender fleshwarp. She mostly resembles a very young halfling lass except for her face. Her head is shorter that what normally would be expected, without having a lower jaw at all. Her eyes are half again larger than typical for the size of her head. Her nose is extremely flat and much longer than most but joined along the bottom. It works much like the gills of a fish in that it has vertical flaps of skin that resemble slender vents. She has no mouth and her voice comes through the air vents of her "nose" instead.

She favors black and gray clothing colors.

Lilly had been trailing along after the others with a clearly confused look on her face. Silas and Alandri seemed to have suddenly lost all their senses when chatting with the merchant for no reason as far as she could understand. She pondered the exchange in her head as they had made their way to this other merchant and the look of confusion finally cleared. "I get it now... quite clever indeed..." She says aloud, quite unrelated to the current situation, but clearly amused by the accompanying low trill of sound with her words. A chorus of almost chickadee like sounds beneath them.

Lilly shrugs as Alandri strides off, "Did I miss something else?" She glanced at the merchant and the now five remaining birds. "Do you mind if I take a look?" She asked the merchant, she wasn't an expert dealing with people by any means but she was quite familiar with cities themselves and the people in them as well as how they dealt with one another. Her familiarity with farm livestock would give her an approximate age relatively easily and give her some clues as to the sex of the birds as well. As long as one of them was male they'd be able to reproduce of course. If they were within a couple weeks old spotting any males would be relatively easy, with the wings of the males lacking the double feathered layers female chicks displayed when young. She'd be more guessing if they were older but still immature but still, their were characteristics that most roos showed clearly even at an early age.

Makena serves another customer, fortunately not one buying the chicks you want, while you talk among yourselves. She returns to answer Lilly's enquiry, "Yes, of course you may look. Ojofiri chicks are quite delicate, as you know, but these are strong as long as you keep them out of the rain. Five chicks, four gold each. I'll throw in the cage and some feed for twenty?"

The merchant is telling the truth as far as Lilly can tell by examining the birds. They are delicate and need the dry but are in good health. They are certainly the birds you are looking for.

As Silas stood stone-faced at Thadeka's passionate entreaty, the young priestess turns to her other friends. Kaikara says nothing, her harsh features, as always, indecipherable. It was hard for the cleric to discern exactly what was going on in her mind. Lilly on the other hand seemed excited and effervescent. Perhaps she believed that this was the best way to go about completing their assignment? Perhaps.

Nodding her head slightly in feigned obeisance to the catfolk thaumaturge, the tall human girl turned to the merchant and slowly counted out the 20gp into Makena's hand.

As the interactions continued with the merchant, Kaikara began to shift her weight from one foot to another, rocking back and forth from the ball of her feet to her heel. She scowled out at the merchants, as well as the passerby's. Silas' rapid departure caught the warrior off guard, however, she huffed as she watched his back recede into the crowd before returning her attention to her cohort. She breathed an, audible, sigh of relief when Thandeka paid the merchant securing the small group a clutch of chicks for their first Perquisite task.

It was only as they began returning to the Spire Dormitory that Kaikara spoke, "I find it frustrating that the people's of the Kafesi Market will not trade with the Magaambyan's. Their market is within Nantambu, protected by the magicks of the Magaambya Academy, some thanks and appreciation would be expected. In the Matanji, all artisans, merchants, and intellectuals know that they owe their freedoms to the warrior caste, and so show respect, and deference, to them. It seems odd to me, that such is not the case here."

Makena takes the money and hands over the cage, "Keep them warm and dry."

Ojofiri chicks are especially fragile, and without special care during the damp and cold trek back to the academy, they’ll get sick enough to die. A hero must attempt a DC 15 Medicine or Nature check to keep the chicks warm and healthy. On a success, the chickens all make it back to the school just fine. On a failure, one chick gets sick and dies. On a critical failure, two chicks get sick and die.

The young priestess carefully takes the cage from the merchant's hand. Holding the container with one hand, she examines the chicks. They are adorable!, thinks Thandeka, ... but how will we carry them back to Magaambaya if they are so delicate?

She turns to the others, but neither Silas nor Kaikara exhibit any interest to the hatchlings. Lilly, on the other hand, seems to be quite the opposite. Maybe with her help, Thandeka might be able to bring them back safely.

The tall girl has another thought. She asks Malkena, "Excuse me, mistress, but do you happen to have a cloth or canvas cover for this cage? I... we need to protect the chicks. If so, how much more will that cost?"

Makena gives Thandeka an old cloth rag, enough to cover the cage and keep the chicks dry, "No charge. Come back if you need any other birds."

You make it back to the Magaambya campus without incident, with all the chicks intact. The chicks stare out of the cage at their surroundings curious as to where they are going.

Haibram greets you on your return, "Took your time. Did you get lost on the way or something?"

"Let's have a look at these birds, shall we," the dwarf scowls at the chicks before nodding, apparently in approval, "I don't suppose there's any change, is there? From the twenty gold we gave you?"

After receiving an answer he tuts, clearly disappointed in your negotiating skills, or perhaps that is the way he treats everyone.

"Well, the rest of the day is yours to do as you wish. Esi will want you here again after breakfast tomorrow."

Kaikara watched as Haibram seemed to judge them for the coinage they spent in acquiring the Ojofiri chicks, she stepped forward, "Mister Thodja, it was you who budgeted for the purchase of these chicks. If you are displeased with our performance, how about we speak with Master Ot, seeing as how you refuse to tell us why the students of Magaambya avoid the market, perhaps our instructors have some manner of insight they could shine on that particular question." She folded her arms across her chest, "Now, seeing as these chicks are ... what did you tell us? Can be used in a variety of talismans, potions, and other magical tools and their tail feathers make excellent quills for the magical inscribing of scrolls. Having our own supply could save the Magaambya a fortune over the next few years." She raised an eyebrow as she glowered at the disapproving dwarf, "So shall we consider it coin well spent?"

Haibram snorts in irritation, "If you want to run to teacher every time there's a disagreement then do ahead. He'll soon put you straight." The dwarf, in stereotypical dwarven fashion, is unlikely to give much in the way of praise.

"As I said, you have the day to yourselves. If you want to waste it whining about me, I'm not going to stop you." With that he stalks off, heavy feet thudding along with the crate of chicks swinging in one hand.
