Raze was so uncomfortable she was nearly ready to crawl out of her own skin.  She wasn't new to the business and, frankly, none of this made any sense to the thief.

First of all, it was far too easy to penetrate the lair of one of the most notorious thieving guilds in the city.  Second, the occupants of the lair were surprising cooperative with such intruders, which defied their reputation as violent killers.

And now, the famous tough killers were voluntarily releasing a captured cleric of Pharasma and, of all things, returning the released prisoner's belongings and valuables to him without hesitation.

For some reason, they either want us all out of here quickly or they are setting a far more elaborate trap that is necessary just to murder us, Raisin silently thinks to herself as she attempts to discern the boss's true motives.

Mulling over what was said, as well as what might have been left unspoken, Raze recalls that the alleged boss stated they took the priest hostage as insurance in case the Temple of Pharasma moved against them as she secretly evaluates the truth and motive underlying the man's words.

Assuming that they aren't just paranoid about being followed by the priest of Pharasma after the auction, then what reason would this thief guild have to worry about retaliation by the Temple unless they are somehow involved in the undead problem plaguing the city, the Tiefling rogue mentally muses to herself.

Leaning over close to Anhotep, Raisin quickly whispers her concerns in brief fashion allowing the holy man to fill in the blanks as she straightens back up and curls her tail around to secretly draw another tiny vial as the burglar continues to prepare for the worst using the stone wall for both cover and concealment.

Temporarily assessing the thug's boss to be human - or at least, human adjacent, as wasn't the easiest to tell with the mask obscuring most of the easily perceivable denoting characteristics, Dros kept a cheerful grin on his face as he watched the group in front of them for any signs of treachery. The half-elf fully expected this to devolve into violence sooner rather than later, not really believing that they'd not wanted to hurt the priest, but rather, that they just hadn't gotten around to it yet. All things considered, he'd trust his siblings sooner than this lot, which really didn't say anything good about them.

The Story

A minute or two later, the man returns with a crate of possessions. The priest takes a quick look over them. "Everything appears to be here". The gang waits for everyone to leave.

Grabbing his holy symbol. "Let's go" suggests the priest.

Perception checks: While everyone is tense. You don't see or hear any underhanded activity. They are gang of smugglers, grave robbers, thieves, and bullies. There is no profit in a big bloody battle to the death.

"Over here, Sweets!!" Zelda Mordeaux says quickly to the priest, waving him over to come stand by her and out of the way of any pending conflicts.

"Don't you worry your little britches now..., Mama won't let any big meanies put you back down in any wells ok?!," she says, with a heavy dose of sarcasm. Pearl reaches up and grabs hold of the Priest's hand, tightly, as if he were a small hapless boy.

Anhotep considers the matter carefully. The time the discussion had taken had seen his shield spell lapse. The darkness spell on the coin had almost certainly lapsed as well such that using the battle winning tactic was almost certainly a thing of the past. All in all, it had been a very expensive delay. In fact the only good which had come of it was the priest had been handed over.

Still, the Masked One had the look of a leader, and so there was an opportunity while they were legally empowered agents of the local authority to do a bit of unchallengable good while they were here. He was a little surprised to encounter a criminal mastermind who was so easy to find, though who was to say he was not merely a Lieutenant.

Stepping back, with a "Well then..", he casts Shield from his wand. "Your cooperation will reflect positively on you when you're tried for your crimes. Lay down your arms." he purrs, thinking at least they'd have someone to carry the one he'd prevented from dying.

It was clear that tensions were high, Ramad somewhat wanted to let things go, because they were able to retrieve the priest, but sensing that combat might still be apparent, Ramad continues to stand his ground and uses his bloodline to emphasize the situation. Growing to a large size, Ramad felt the fire of his efreeti heritage fill him. The debris below his feet cracked against his new weight.

"There is no need for further bloodshed, but it is clear that crimes have been done and thus, should be answered for." he says, supporting Anhotep's last statement.

The Story

"What crimes? replies the masked man. "Last night, we detained a man sneaking around our place. Today you broke into our place and assaulted my men. Those were crimes committed against us".

"But there are probably some misunderstandings from the past" He pulls out a small bag. "There is enough in here to pay a fine of two or three hundred golden coins. You can keep the remainder as your fee for being my intermediaries ." Just before he tosses the bag over, he pulls out a second smaller bag. "This one has twenty platinum in it. Just in case, you need extra for the fine or your fee" Then he tosses both bags to the group.

spacer.pngQUICK STATS:  AC=22, Touch=14, FF=18 / HP=30/31 / Init=4 / Saves: Fort=4, Reflex=10, Will=4

_______________________________________________________________________

Even though it was contrary to her nature, nonetheless Raisin makes eye contact with Anhotep and nods her head in the negative when the leader of the thief guild offers the party the equivalent of five hundred gold to basically be on their way with the Priest.

Now that such an exorbitant sum has been offered by a notorious murder guild without negotiation, I'm sure they want us out of here and quickly for some unknown reason, the Tiefling rogue thinks silently to herself with a frown. A reason seemingly linked to the outbreak of undead in the city, at least tangentially.

Raising her voice without moving out of cover with with short bow in hand, Raisin says, "Why would you worry that the Temple of Pharasma might come looking for you, pray tell," and then she consumes the contents of the flask which was held by her tail?

Thereafter, the burglar uses her prehensile tail to draw another small glass vial from her fancy potion bandolier, before quietly climbing up the wall next to her so she is secretly positioned on the ceiling just around the corner above the enemy's position ready to unexpectantly sneak attack from above if hostilities break out between the two groups.

Mechanics

Free Action: Speak

Swift Action: Draw tiny vial with Prehensile Tail using Sleight of Hand Skill

Move Action:

Standard Action: Consume Potion of Spider Climb

Ramad watches the situation unfold unfavorably, as Anhotep appears to not wish to allow the bandits to negotiate their way out of arrest, he looks back at his companion scuffling off and then to the bands, "We are currently tasked to deal with the undead, and it appears my friend here may have forgotten our main goal." he adds, "That is to vanquish the undead and aid in rescuing the people."

Then he turns his head downward from his enlarged position, "Yet.. Do you know or have anything to do with any items stolen from the auction house that caused this mess?" demands Ramad. "Paying fines, offering gold will not solve this issue, if you are responsible for the theft."

The Story

Anhotep tries to use his wand . . .it fizzles. Ramad starts to speak when all hell breaks out.

The gang of thieves spring into action. One unleashes a blast of fire into Ramad, Dros, and Anhotep. Then one tries to shock Ramad but misses. A different one step forwards and lightly shocks Anhotep (4hp). The bossman steps into the fight. He first slashes at Ramad's feet, and then tries to stab him. He fails both times.

The smuggler steps in. His blade skips off of Ramad's armor.

"Ope!! That's my cue!" Pearls says, having been a little perplexed a moment prior as to which way the negotiations would go, but no longer uncertain.

Pearl gestures and chants an ashy phrase and twists her palms into a small fold as all the nearby shadows seem to gather into the cup of her hands before she extends them and sends three arcing, shadowy masses of force, around, up and over the group to strike the three underling gangsters, knocking them off balance.

She then hikes up her dress and quickly scampers back toward the entrance as she was feeling a bit vulnerable where she'd been.
