Baldur moves silently along with the group and is slightly impressed with how easily Ru'ath handles the lock. He hefts his morningstar and joins the others as they rush in, or that was his plan right up until Yal just steps inside the door and does not move further in, blocking the doorway.

Don't just stand there blocking the doorway. Move in so the rest of us can get in there with you.

Dungeons & Dragons 5e with DM BWatford


Ru'ath swiftly unlocked the aged lock, silent as a shadow—clearly, this wasn't her first covert lockpicking. Her expertise was evident. Moments later, she stepped aside, allowing the imposing dragonborn to take her place at the door.

Yaldiled hoisted her warhammer in preparation as she opened the ancient wooden door to take her first glimpse inside.
 

Ground Floor

This circular room, now neglected and grimy, contains a few crates and boxes along its edges, with a table and chair at the center where the millstone once stood. Originally the millers' central workstation, it has been out of use for decades. The deteriorating millstone leans against the wall, shored up on one side by wooden blocks and stabilized on the other with a wedge. A rope, secured to the wall with spikes above the door, prevents the millstone from toppling over. To the south, a wooden ladder ascends to the upper floor, while stone steps descend to the mill's basement.


Three stableboys are seated at the table, drinking. Each one is clad in a rough leather outfit, with a mace hanging from their belt. On the table before them lies a set of three heavy crossbows and cases of bolts.

Taken aback by the sudden opening of the door, they hastily reach for their crossbows.

Baldur rushes forward closing with the closest of the farmboys and swings his morningstar. He aims to subdue rather than kill. But is aim is off and the young man manages to avoid the blow.

Baldur might have decided on mercy, but Saara held no such tenderness in her heart for the young stable hands. It was possible that the cook had been lying to them, she might even have been yet another member of the Golden Mask. Yet why would three youths, obviously equipped for a fight, be sitting around the old inn drinking while the Lord's Mannor burned? No, she'd already committed to this path. There was a sound like the crack of thunder, and the roar of unseen winds, as the servant of Faeryl Myrryn broke the First Blood SealSaara uses Form of Dread.

Sigils of fey power crackled to life in the air before her, blood red and sizzling with power, her features hollowing as the life force appeared to be drained out of her. Her cheekbones became so sharp they could cut glass, her eyes became haunted and so stained with blood it was a wonder she could see from them at all. The thin rod in her gauntleted grip seemed to pulse and swell, and any who looked at it closely would have seen that rivulets of blood now flowed up and down it's length.

It was impressive, but it was slow.

With a hiss of arcane power, she slashed this in the air. Something flew forth, obvious from the weight of its passage, but there was no obvious bolt of fire or crackle of lightning. Whatever it was, it could be felt more than it could be seen, but it streaked across the room to strike the nearest youth squarely in the chest twice.

Amelia almost laughed as two ran in to subdue the boys and Saara sought to cut them apart, but she had to admit, she sided more with Saara in this instance.

From the doorway she reached out, her fingers go dark, a creeping purple-black colour seeps down from her already black nails and smoke pools around her hand, from the dark wisps coiling around her hand two twisting, smoky bolts fly, like arms length shafts of blackish, frozen lightning leap and strike two of the farmboys.

Ru's pulse raises slightly as she sees the three youths. There seems to be no sign of prisoners or sacrifices, but the fact they are here and well armed suggests that something is amiss.

As the others dash into combat, Ru follows them into the room. While she has no qualms about dispatching evil-doers, she feels it's better to subdue these foes...after all, it's hard to question a corpse! Drawing her rapier and aiming a blow at Todrun that's designed to stun the stableboy she calmly addresses the others. "Surrender or die!" she states simply.

Baldur charges, closing in on the nearest farmboy, and swings his morningstar with the intent to subdue, not to kill. However, his aim is off, and the young man dodges the blow. On the second swing, Baldur's weapon arcs wide and connects, the spike driving deep into the man's back, propelling him forward.

As Saara underwent her transformation, she positioned herself behind Yaldiled. With a hiss of arcane energy, she made a slashing gesture in the air. An entity flew forth, its presence felt rather than seen, devoid of fire or lightning. It surged across the room, striking the nearest youth in the chest twice, as he turned towards her, his expression one of utter shock.

Yaldiled advanced toward one of the unharmed stableboys, delivering a non-lethal strike with her hammer to the one on the right. The hammer connected with the youth's side as they attempted to rise to their feet.

From the doorway, Amelia extended her hand, her fingers darkening to a deep purple-black hue that seeped down from her already black nails. Smoke gathered around her palm, and from the shadowy tendrils entwining her hand, two twisting bolts of smoky lightning shot out. Like arm-length spears of frozen, blackish energy, they leapt and struck two of the farmboys.

As the others rush into battle, Ru enters the room behind them. Although she has no hesitation in dealing with evildoers, she prefers to incapacitate these adversaries—after all, one cannot interrogate the dead. She draws her rapier, intending to incapacitate Todrun, the stableboy. Striking him with the flat of her blade at the base of his neck, the young man collapses to the ground, unconscious.

The other two were still struggling to become coherent and stand up as they watched their comrade fall, yet they showed no intention of surrendering peacefully.

"Stay down," Yaldiled says before delivering another overhead blow onto the stable boy with her hammer. She's still holding back so she doesn't kill him.

With his initial target down he closes on the next one (Sem) and proceeds to try to help him get some sleep. His first shot delivers a solid blow to the farmboy, but the kid avoids his second one.

She hopes that his mother will understand as she offers no mercy this time.

Saara hadn't been interested in taking prisoners to begin with.

Not that she was bloodthirsty, just practical. She had many weapons in her arsenal, but the Blood Seals were easily her most potent. Until the threat was contained, she would continue to draw on that weapon. She remained standing just inside the doorway, hurling power at the most wounded of the two men-at-arms. The air shuddered as whatever she hurled struck, though she did not have the force of her first arcane blow.

Dungeons & Dragons 5e with DM BWatford


Yaldiled strikes the stable boy with another overhead blow from her hammer, careful not to use lethal force. However, the impact was less effective than she intended.

Having subdued his initial target, Baldur advances towards the next one, Sem, intending to assist him in finding rest. His first strike lands a solid hit on the farmboy, yet the youngster dodges the second attempt.

Amelia unleashed another volley of bolts, springing from her extended hand and slamming into the farmboy who was entangled with Baldur. The blasts hit him squarely, sending him tumbling backward in his chair, lifeless before he even touched the ground.

Ru hoped the boys mother would understand as she showed no mercy, moving to the other side of the remaining farmboy. Her rapier plunged straight down, its pointed end piercing the boy's chest. As she withdrew the blade, the boy coughed up blood, yet he was somehow still breathing.

Saara stepped past Ru inside of the doorway and hurled another bolt of power at the boy coughing up blood between Yaldiled and Ru, the blast of energy snapping the boy's neck like a twig as he was blown back out of his seat and toppled down the stairs a few feet.

As their enemies lay defeated, the brief silence was shattered when the hatch above the ladder swung open, revealing a slender woman clad in black robes. Her eyes were pupil-less, and her head bore a tattoo of a five-pointed star within a circle. She surveyed the group and the fallen farmboys below, then raised a bizarre fetish resembling a crudely stitched ragdoll with pins protruding from it. Extracting one of the pins, she flung it downward, transforming it into a bolt of dark energy that hit Baldur squarely, sending the dwarf crashing into the wall.

Shortly thereafter, another woman fitting the same description emerged alongside her sister and cast a dark bolt at Baldur. However, this bolt struck the floor before it could reach the dwarf. Moments later, the hatch sealed shut, and the sound of one of the women standing on it could be heard.

Ow! That was not nice.

He puts away his morningstar and pulls out his crossbow. He aims it at the hatch just in case one of those witches dared peek out again.

Anyone got any ideas on how to get through that door. Sounds like one of the is standing on it. We need to get up there fast or there is no teling what horrid things they will do to their captives.
