Yaldiled growled. "Ky is probably correct. Some money goes into there pockets if we assume everyone we've met as part of this is a shapeshifter. Monder, Gruff, and Raffolk's grandmother." She was tempted to give Raffolk a threat, but it wouldn't do any good besides burning off some of the frustration of being conned. "Let's see if they are real, and if they aren't, lets pick up their trail."

Baldur listens to what is happening and as the guards lead the changeling off he can't help himself and starts to laugh. It starts as a chuckle and builds to a full belly laugh. It takes him a few seconds to get himself under control.

Yeah we csn go back and see if Granny is still there. But don't be surprised if we get there and she doesn't know what we are talking about. A changeling could have taken her shape and played the ruse on us while the real Granny was out. But I don't think trying to track them down is a good idea. First off, they can change shape so we would have no idea who is part of it and who is not, or even what they would look like now. I suggest that after checking on her we should head to the Lords house and see if he knows anything about this deal or if you guys are out your money.

We should also see if we can find someone who can tell us if this really is a quatal feather.

He walks with them as they head back to granny's house.

"Even if she still is a Doppleganger, how would we know? Can any of you weave the truth geas that the guard spun?"

She always had a weird way of saying things, heavily accented due to her unnatural upbringing. She wasn't going out of her way to be strange, she was just a Childe of the Fey, a Green Knight in service to one of the higher Courts. She'd never said which, but it was the reason she was out here to begin with.

"We could ask Trazz, Trazz knows all sorts of things."

It was the reason she worked for Trazz the Cruel too, some debt owed to him by the Fey.

Chapter 1 - Blood on the Crown The Couatl Feather

After confirming that none of their pockets had been picked, the group made their way back across town to where Granny Pearla's flat was at. Once there they gave a rap upon the door but did not get an answer. Checking the door and confirming it was indeed locked, they took a quick look around the outside of the flat.

The side window had curtains draw within, so it was not a lot of help, there was a backdoor in the alley, but they found it locked as well. Looking around, they did not see anyone on the streets currently near them.

Scene Notes: Font door lock (DC 15), backdoor lock (DC 10) or could break the side window if one wanted to get inside.

"Any of you know the secret names of locks and tumblers?"

Another strange way of asking if anyone knew how to jimmy a lock.

"Otherwise I think we might be forced to rely on old faithful."

She pantomimed kicking the door. Then she moved to the end of the alleyway, looking to make sure they weren't being observed by anyone before they engaged in any sort of potentially criminal activity. She wasn't the best lookout, as she was easily distractible at the best of time, but her heart was in the right place.

Yeah, that is not happening. We were duped. We are not going to break into this house and risk getting caught. We would end up arrested ourselves. I know where we can find the Lord. We can go there and ask him if he was ever interested in this feather. If not, then the whole thing was a scam and most likely everyone we encountered was a changeling and none of it was real. Heck as far as we know the guards that arrested him might have been in on it. We would have to go to the guard headquarters to find out if anyone was actually arrested.

Our best choice in this is to accept the loss and try to learn from it. If you all insist on going after a bunch of changelings it is going to lead to nothing but more trouble for us. I say we go find another job that someone is willing to pay us for and actually earn some money.

He doubts the others are going to listen to him, but he has to try. This path is going to be very expensive and there is no paycheck waiting at the end of it.

Saara paused midstride, considering the Dwarf's words.

"That's actually... a pretty good point."

They hadn't answered her earlier query, which was itself an answer. They didn't have a way to tell Dopplegangers from regular folk.

"Especially as we've no talent for telling the real from the glamour? The Dwarf has convinced me."

She walked back, and at least tried to peak through a window to see if she could see inside.

Ky agrees with Baldur too. She has no desire to break into a house that probably belongs to an innocent person.

"It's almost certain that 'Granny' is in on it. We should talk to Lord Monder to see how far this goes, but I agree that we shouldn't make enemies of the doppelgängers until we are better prepared to take them on. Let's go meet with the Lord and then regroup at the tavern."

Chapter 1 - Blood on the Crown The Crownwarden's Concern

Deciding not to enter Granny's flat without being welcomed. The Manticores decided to head for the High District where Baldur had been told that the Crownwarden had a villa. All of them knew the High District was an enclosed, walled district where the nobles of the capitol lived.  They also knew that access was tightly controlled by the Royal Swords.

After crossing the city once again, they arrived at the nearest gate in the old wall and was immediately stopped at the guard station. The Royal Guards there asking for a stamped letter of errand to allow them entrance.  Having no such paper the group explained the situation, how they were duped and the encounter with their fellow Swords earlier. Countless to say the Royal Swords at the gate would not let them pass without a stamped letter.

However, a runner was sent to the Crownwarden's estate which seemed to take forever, the young soldier finally arrived back with the permission of the Crownwarden and the group was to be let through, so the guards gave them directions and let them enter.

Beautiful villas, lush gardens, well-kept roads, and fancy continuously lit magical streetlamps were the most striking characteristics of this elegant neighborhood as they made their way toward where they had been directed. The roads were wide, and the sparse population allowed for sizeable parks which was nothing like the hustle and bustle of the real city outside the old walls.

Upon arrival they found that the current Crownwarden’s villa was a simple yet robust structure. He had a few housekeepers to manage the villa, the wide strong gates were wide open, and they were quickly greeted by the friendly staff and brought inside. Being quickly led to the majestic main hall, which featured a very high ceiling and comfortable sofas with built-in mug holders.

They were then told to make themselves comfortable and that Lord Monder would be with them shortly.

Lord Cyne Monder Dwarf Crownwardenimage.png.bbc38ab8620fc7312b363c727c8c7546.png

After a few moments, Lord Cyne Monder entered the hall, flanked by two personal guards who waited near the door as he made his way into the chamber.  A cup of wine in hand he quickly ordered the staff to bring a pitcher and some cups for his guest as well.

Motioning for everyone to have a seat "Forgive tha mess, i have been busy with tha security preparations for tha King's Games an' tha Battle o' tha Champions an' shou' be better prepared ta receive guest."

The Crownwarden then fell quite as he looked each of the group over as if sizing them up, allowing the staff time to arrive with the pitcher of wine and for each member that wanted to be served a cup.

He then turned to one of the staff and said "Benjamin, remind me I be going ta have ta speak ta those Swords at tha gate. Allowing weapons into tha High District be nae allowed. They know better than this."

Then turning toward the group who was being served "Nae offense intended, tha law be tha law, it be what it be."

While everyone was seated comfortably on the sofas the Lord remained standing but leaned against a nearby table, the impromptu meeting obviously having caught the Crownwarden off guard and obviously he seemed to be a man that liked a proper schedule "So i hear quite tha tale, I be sure young henry did nae relay everything correctly, but an intriguing story, nonetheless. But I be interested in hearing it directly from tha horse's mouth." he added as he took a sip from his cup and looked off as if distracted by other thoughts before turning back to the group "Well someone has ta speak up."

Baldur takes a deep breath and then tells the whole story from start to finish, leaving nothing out.

So, sir. Basically we are here to see if you were interested in this colorful feather, or if the whole thing was a set up from the start.

With that he pulls the feather out of his back, carefully, and shows it to Lord Monder. He will not be surprised if they are told that he is not looking for any feathers and that the whole thing was a scam. He will be very surprised if the Lord offers to buy the feather for the mentioned price.

"We wanted to investigate further, perhaps see if the Grandmother was also one of their Agents."

She shrugged, laughing.

"We also didn't want to get arrested breaking into some poor innocent woman's house, or worse find her dead and be blamed for it. So we came to speak to you first."

She'd been all for kicking the door down, it had been Baldur who'd talked her out of it. She was rash, that was true, but it hadn't cost her too dearly yet. It was a failure of her bloodline, or at least that's what her Patron had always joked. She and her kin were born and bred to resist not just fey magic, but all magic. A race of guards, soldiers, and servitors who feared no Art, and would laugh in the face of searing Magefire or a Witch's foulest blood curse. Such bravado had a lasting effect on the rest of one's worldview, as Saara amply and frequently demonstrated.
