During his watch with Pendergrast, Samrod attempts to chat up the fellow a bit. While he is certainly a fool, he does seem to be driven to become known as a respectable man of science. So much more of a shame then, that he seems to crave attention more then the truth. Ah but perhaps, some of Irori's wisdom may help guide Pendergrast on a path closer to true Perfection, rather then false adoration. So while Samrod is not much of a priest, and certainly does not wish to end up preaching, rather then sharing a few hints, he still hopes that the man can at least glimpse the wisdom of Irori's teachings, even though they truly are not for everybody.

###

Fascinated by his hands' transformation, Samrod does not even look up from examining them closely to answer Pendergrast. He does, however not forget to chose polite words for his answer.

"Thank you, Pendergrast Effendi, I shall consider your gracious offer cordially. Yet before I can afford to look into this, shall we say, affliction closer, we still have those evil Dahak cultists to deal with. And as Golden Dragons are known to be powerful and terrifying forces of Good, I shall live up to the expectations the colour of my own scales signify. I shall use my skills, my power my experience to crush the cult and tear its very heart out!", he replies, with a pleasant enough tone of voice, although he does make a fist at the end, seeing if he is still able to box properly, or if punching a foe would drive his own draconic claws into his own draconic palms. Hmm...

"Figuratively speaking of course. While we shall end the cultist thread, we shall also endeavour to do so without resorting to sheer barbarism. After all, one can wage war and still be civilised about it, isn't that right, Pendergrast Effendi? That reminds me, have you ever heard of the Scarlet Triad perhaps?"

Oathday, 12 Rova 4719, Early morning

spacer.png"Scarlet Triad.....Scarlet Triad.....", Pendergrast muses, ignoring Cirmarans exasperated outburst, "Aaaahhh, yes! I do believe I've seen them once! A rather ghastly theatre troupe touring the Inner Sea. Out of Absalom, I believe? They put on a show in Oppara a couple of years ago - absolutely dreadful! A supposedly 'modern' interpretation of a classic Porphyrean play. Completely ruined a perfectly good piece, if you ask me! But such is the taste of the youthes, nowadays.... What of them?"

It is promising to be a hot and humid day. The sun is barely over the horizon and yet with hardly any wind to cool down the body and the humidity steadily rising, sweat is already pearling off your brow. Renali is preparing a wholesome, if somewhat bland, meal out of your dwindling rations as you make your morning preparations.

Samrod can't help but smile at both Cirmaran's and Boradur's interjections, hot-headed Cirmaran and level-headed Boradur. Elf and Dwarf...

Pendergrast's account of the Scarlet Triad is... not what Samrod hoped for, but interesting nonetheless in its own way.

"Ah? Interesting. I shall remember that, Pendergrast Effendi. I see you are a man of culture. A student of the arts maybe? Alas, the 'Scarlet Triad' that I am referring to is a... trade organisation, based out of Khatapesh. They are a rather secretive lot, but it is no secret that they trade with everything promising profit, including things a morally upstanding person would rather not. But as long as the Pactmasters elect not to outlaw slavery...", Samrod shrugs. Slaverly is something Irori frowns upon, but Abadar's rules are the ones the Pactmasters obey.

Oathday, 12 Rova 4719, early afternoon

spacer.pngPendergrast just gives Samrod a blank stare, clearing haven't the faintest idea what he is talking about and quite likely think that the desert warrior is delusional.

You complete your morning preparations, which includes another meal consisting of another helping of dried fruits, tubers and nuts supplies by the Ekujae elves. When you first set out from Akrivel, they were a delicious change from the rather bland rations of dried beef jerky, hard bread and cheese, which is more common in your part of the world, but at this point a slice of cheese on stale bread does not sound so awful. Renali round up some fresh berries from a nearby shrub to add just a twist.

You leave the river and Pendergrasts boat and start to ascend the rocky hills to the east, heading towards the site where Hezles map indicates the nearest remaining dragon pillar to be. The journey soon gets arduous and exhausting in the oppressing heat and the steep ascend, and you are sweating profusely in your combat gear. This is one of these days where your water skins drain quicker than usual.

By noon when the sun reaches the zenith the terrain becomes flatter as you reach a higher plateau in the jungle. The ground becomes soggier and soon after puddles of stale water starts showing in the soft undergrowth. The dense jungle canopy thins exposing you to the searing rays of the sun. Mercifully, clouds begin to creep in with the promise of rains.

After a few more hours during which your pace almost drops to a crawl, you finally reach the site where the dragon pillar is supposed to be. The terrain in this area gives way to thick cloying mud and swampy ground. Shallow puddles lie scattered across the oversaturated earth, the water rising up to fill footsteps and other indentations left in the soil. Droplets slide from leaf to leaf before falling into the puddles, causing the pools to froth and boil. Soft bells sound intermittently between the patter of rain. Then, at long last, you spot the dragon pillar in the middle of a swampy marshland.

Mechanics

I've moved to making maps using Foundry VTT. It has a lot of nice features, not least that all necessary information is collected in one place - saves me tons of time looking thing up. But sadly there is one major feature lacking: Map coordinates. It is meant to be used in real time, and apparently nobody (with programming skills and a lot of free time on their hands) has thought of adding map coordinates to make them more usable in PbP (can't blame them - the system seems to have amazing properties for life gameplay, so PbP seems a bit tame in comparison). Anyway, I hope we can make do without coordinates, though I acknowledge that it requires a bit more detailed explanation on your part to describe movements.

Terrain:

Unlike other parts of the jungle, everything in this map is characterised as swamp terrain. The parts that appear to be "dry" land is still difficult terrain. The wet parts are (at best) greater difficult terrain (assuming it is shallow enough to wade through).

"Indeed. This may only be the, uh, second or third swamp I am encountering in my life, but Black Dragons lair in swamps. So yes, any guardians may well be hidden in the water", Samrod agrees, then adds "Flying over there sounds like a plan, but I am not sure it is wise to split up. Hmm. From here it looks like the pillar stands on a peninsula. Maybe if we circle around and approach from the other side? Maybe let's do that before you go scouting all alone again, Cirmaran Sahib. Oathday, 12 Rova 4719, early afternoon

Cirmaran disappears into the mushy surroundings as he takes a few minutes to look around. His eyes and ears are supercharged, and he immediately notices the soft sounds of small bells from various places in the area. He quickly picks up a tripwire connected to a little bell strung across his path before he stumbles into it and he can easily sidestep it as he moves deeper. These small 'traps' seem to be all over the place, making it more difficult to move around unheard, and it would be all but impossible to to disable them all. The tripwires do not appear to have any other harmful effects, though.

Another thing catching his eye is that one of the larger trees in the middle of the swamp appears to be hollowed out and through a narrow crack facing west, Cirmaran notices movement within the gloom. He returns to report his findings.

Mechanics

There are so many small bells strung up that locating and disabling them all is not really an option. Mechanically, the "trap" simply gives a -4 penalty to using stealth in the area. I did not apply the -4 penalty to this stealth check due to Cirmarans crit success on perception.

Terrain:

Unlike other parts of the jungle, everything in this map is characterised as swamp terrain. The parts that appear to be "dry" land is still difficult terrain. The wet parts are (at best) greater difficult terrain (assuming it is shallow enough to wade through).

Pondering Cirmaran's report upon his return, Samrod suggests "Impressive, Cirmaran Sahib, even though I knew you were around, I did neither hear nor see you. And you say, the hollow tree may be what our generals may call a 'listening post'. Surely the sentinels will summon guardians as soon as they detect any intruders. This presents us with a conundrum. We know how dangerous the Dragon Pillars can be, and we have no clue about this pillar's capabilities. So we ignore it at our own peril. Yet common wisdom would advise to take out the sentry with a quick, decisive strike, hopefully quenching its ability to call up reinforcements.

Fireball followed by an infantry charge maybe? That is, if you can get Boradur and me close enough that we can close the distance quickly. Hmm, but the tree is still alive, even if hollow? Then I believe toppling it with a bodyslam is not an option..."

Oathday, 12 Rova 4719, early afternoon

The tree pointed out by Cirmaran seems to be quite sturdy, and as Samrod observes still alive. Its massive trunk is more than 15 ft. in diameter and its gnarled roots seems to dig deep into the swampy ground. A bodyslam is more likely to hurt your shoulder than toppling the tree.

"Ah, fey, perhaps. But nature doesn't need fey to be savage or dangerous, which could also explain why whoever lives here is being so careful to lay these bell traps all over."

"If it is trees that are dangerous, perhaps the new staff could be of benefit, eh?"

Wilder puts his bola on his belt and equips the fire staff.

Since Wilder is a fey sorcerer, he would like to use a knowledge check to see if anything here reminds him of the fey world, as Boradur suggested.
