The Stone Tooth

"The good Brother has the right of it," said Urd. "Sooner or later, the orcs will realize their numbers are dwindling. I don't know if it's worth the risk leaving here to camp for the night. But they don't seem to have discovered this passage in all their time here -- and that might afford us some level of secrecy at least."

"I'm going to open the door. Be ready in case we need Gerbimble's friends to show up..." With the door found, Urd carefully looked for an opening mechanism, starting with poking the door frame with her bow. After all, it worked with the first secret entrance -- and dwarves weren't known for veering off the beaten path when it came to a working method.

"If the orcs were unaware of this, we should make an effort to conceal our tracks as best we can if we are to use this as a safe room," he says in a hushed voice.

Brother Christo smiles and replies in a hushed whisper, "Let's crack it open and see what's on the other side. Knowing what lie beyond will help make our tactical decisions for us."

"Who knows, it might open into a dead-end treasure room or just be a secret door on the wall of a commonly used, highly trafficked hallway."

"Although, I'm hoping for the former," the Elven holy man adds with a good-natured smile as he raises his bow, which has a nasty looking razor-sharp arrow nocked and at the ready and nods affirmatively for the secret door to be broached and opened to reveal what, if anything, lay beyond the hidden portal.

The secret door is operated in the same way as the other one, by pressing two particular stones at the same time. It slides open to reveal a 5 foot wide staircase ascending steeply up for about 20 feet before terminating in a dead end.

Urd put her finger to her lips to the others, signalling them to stay quiet as she got to work examining the passage. Now was the time to be extra cautious and the last thing she wanted to was to tip off any enemies. If the orcs didn't know about one passage, they probably didn't know about the other end either.

Brother Christo stays back and covers Urd the front-liners with his loaded bow from a distance as the Elf stands watch, sets the perimeter security, and keeps his eyes and ears focused on the surrounding environs.

Why don't we look behind it, Sugrin asks conversationally, looking curiously up the steps? Let me have a good listen before we open it, though, in case someone - or something - is lurking beyond.
