Brother Christo nods affirmatively when his good friend suggests checking out the door at the bottom of the hidden staircase and says in a lowered tone, "I think Sugrin is tactically correct. Knowing if the door is trapped, locked and possibly even what might lay beyond it could turn out to be important should someone start to access these stairs via to upper secret door."

"This knowledge will give us options should things suddenly change tactically for the worse and, with any luck, won't hurt us knowing," the Grey Elf adds in the same hushed voice. Realizing that the illusionist is using his 'Earth Sense' as a detection method to attempt and determine what lay behind the portal, Christo will lean close and listen without touching the door.

After carefully listening for the sound of movement or anything unusual behind the secret door at the bottom of the steps, Brother Christo quietly backs off and, if he heard anything, will whisper the results of his inquiry to the party. However, if he did not hear anything at all, then the holy man will simply shake his head in the negative.

Once he has moved halfway back up the staircase, the musical minister will pause and once again he will draw his bow, nock a razor-sharp steel tipped arrow in his long bow which he points at the lower door while keeping his eyes and ears focused on the surrounding environment, watching and listening for the sight or sound of movement or anything out of the ordinary.

spacer.pngWhen given the message there are others nearby, Gerbimble pulls away from the door.
In a hushed voice, he makes his case to the rest.
"Camping with enemies close is out of the question. I am good to proceed."

"Then as soon as I open the door, send in your 'friends' first, Gerbimble. Everyone else, get ready to rush in afterwards. Gods willing, we can take them out before they can get out an alarm..." Urd whispered, readying her tools.

I've a better idea, the skinny gnome says in a hushed tone, covering his mouth to stifle a giggle, a spell that might catch them off guard.

Open the door for me, just be ready in case it doesn't work.

He would move into position in front of the door, lining himself up as best he can based on his earth sense, then nod to the dwarf in readiness, but not before saying quietly to Christo, cover me.

(Races of the Dragon)

Illusion (Figment)

Level: 1
Components: V, S,
Casting Time: 1 swift action
Range: Personal; see text
Target: You
Duration: 1 round

As you spin around, you produce residual images of yourself, each of which splits off from your body and moves away.

One or more illusory doubles of you appear, spinning off from your original location as you turn in a circle.
You create one double plus one for every four caster levels you have (total 2).

You are then free to go elsewhere while your doubles move away in a manner of your choosing.

The doubles move at your speed and can emit minor sounds such as footsteps or metal clanking, but they can only be made to move, withdraw, or run.
Any successful attack against an illusory double destroys it.

A double's Armor Class is equal to 10 + your size modifier + your Dex modifier (AC 12).

Figments seem to react normally to area spells (such as looking as though they are burned or dead after being hit by a fireball).

Components: V, S, M,
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 15 ft.
Area: Cone-shaped burst
Duration: Instantaneous; see text
Saving Throw: Will negates (DC 15)
Spell Resistance: Yes

A vivid cone of clashing colors springs forth from your hand, causing creatures to become stunned, perhaps also blinded, and possibly knocking them unconscious.
Each creature within the cone is affected according to its Hit Dice.

2 HD or less: The creature is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round.
(Only living creatures are knocked unconscious).

3 or 4 HD: The creature is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, then stunned for 1 round.

5 or more HD: The creature is stunned for 1 round.

Sightless creatures are not affected by color spray.

Brother Vanleaf reaches out with a long thin arm and stops his little friend before Sugrin can reach the secret door and says in a low voice, "I have no doubt you have a crafty plan up your sleeve, but might I suggest we let our resident burglar at least unlock the portal before anyone attempts to open it."

Motioning for Urd to check the door for traps and locks unless anyone objects, next the Elven Priest says in the same lowered tone, "Once it's for sure unlocked, then someone prepare to open the door according to Sugrin's plan."

"Sugrin, I'll cover you with my bow. What should the rest of the party do or be ready to do, if your plan works and, most importantly, should it fail," Christo sincerely asks with a smile since there were a few moments to reveal the basic plan while the doorway is cleared in preparation to be opened?

Urd willed herself to be as quiet as she could be as the others plotted. All her focus was on opening the door as silent as a shadow -- all the while hoping not to alert whoever or whatever was behind it...

The door slides open silently to reveal a long chamber lined with rough-hewn bunks. The floor is strewn with filthy pelts, and there are crates and barrels piled about the room. Five orcs are engaged in various activities around the room. One of them spots the door sliding open among the junk. He roars and grabs his weapon, ready to attack!

Roll Initiative!

One orc gets to act during the surprise round.

Right now only Urd can see into the room due to the steep incline of the stairs.

Brother Vanleaf cringes when the opening of the door reveals five huge orcs, one of which appears ready to attack the group at any moment and now, the entire party was pinned front-to-back in the tiny hallway and lined up like hogs at a slaughterhouse.

Steeling his resolve, the Elven holy man strengthens his grip on his fancy bow and whispers to his old friend hoping for the best from the gnome's unexplained plan which he presumably had readied when previously requesting the door to be opened, "Sugrin, now would be the time for your readied surprise!"

"...five enemies..."

Surprise was on their side -- but only for a heartbeat. Raising her bow and tensing her legs to rush in, Urd silently prayed to the gods they could slay the orcs before any of them had a chance to call out an alarm...

Right you are, the wizard says to his elven friend. Watch out, Urd!

He begins chanting the words to his spell, timing the release just as the enemy appears in the doorway (if he can get it off in time), then retreating back down the stairs.

spacer.pngOh bugger.
Engaging five orcs is just about the direct opposite of resting, but they were aware enemies were on the other side of the door.
Just not that many.
Gerbimble reacts almost instantly by using the divine force imbued in him to shield himself and his allies.
He tries to look for a line of fire to a valid target with his eldritch blasts, but with all of these tall folk in front of him, he finds it too risky to take the shot. I think the situation needs more bats.
He readies to use his invocation and have the swarm materialize as far away from his companions as possible.

Mechanics

Standard action=Summon swarm invocation. Placing it behind the orcs, if possible.

"I'm heading left...aim your spell for the two orcs who'll be behind me." Was what the dwarf grunted before she rushed in. One orc was was alert and rising, but he wasn't by the far side, where the other exit was. No, the important thing was to winnow out those who couldn't react yet. And of those two, there were at least barrels blocking the obvious path to escape.

As Urd moved, she fired off an arrow towards the orc in the back left corner...

Actions

Move: 30ft, staying on the left, ending up in front of that 2nd chest.

Attacking the orc at the far left corner since he's closest to the other exit with a clearer path.
