Season 1, Episode 2 - Getting Down And Dirty

Despite the early hour, the sounds of music and laughter spill out into the quiet, Rookroost street from various doors and windows as you approach a medium-sized tavern situated near area Amira had named The Hill.

Instead of the usual bar sign hanging over the door, you see a stuffed and mounted mangy mongrel. Several wooden boards extend from the building’s wall, high above the street, providing shelter for the tavern’s “sign” and for patrons standing under it. Oddly enough, the mounted mutt is securely chained to the building.

The Dirty Dog Tavern sports a solid iron door mounted in the building’s stout stone wall. A wall-mounted lantern hangs next to the door. Two viewing slats, one set at Human height and one at Hin height, are mounted in the door.

Arwi, Nessia, and Kelarith head into the tavern and immediately notice a dirty Half-Orc to the right who sits on a stool next to the door. The bouncer is clothed in old monk’s robes that are covered in stains. He looks the three newcomers up and down before returning to watching the other patrons in the tavern. Everyone in the bar appears to be from "somewhere else," as they all are dressed like adventurers and no two patrons looks alike. Everyone in the place seems to exude a sense of both relaxation and danger at the same time. Almost everyone is armed and many are armored. This is clearly an adventurers hangout. Some faces turn to look at the new arrivals, a few smile, but no one seems to pay any particular attention to them.

Further to the left, the bar extends thirty feet past the Half-Orc bouncer. Patrons sitting on stools eat and drink at the bar, sharing tales of daring, monsters, far-flung wars, or just the day’s events. Beyond them, a door separates the common room from the kitchen behind the bar. Solid oak tables are scattered about the rest of the L-shaped common room, seats open here and there as other patrons share meals with their friends. A stunningly beautiful Elf maiden, dressed in colorful blouses and skirts, moves with a dancer’s grace between the tables, taking patrons food and drink. Smiling and laughing with the patrons, it is clear that their attempts to paw her are only half-hearted; somehow, she has earned a level of respect unusual for a barmaid to achieve.

A hearth in the corner beyond the bar provides light and warmth as well as the fire necessary for the food preparations. Dirty windows are scattered about and allow in enough light that the tavern is not quite gloomy. On the far wall, a steel backdoor leads to the stable yard and jakes. Near the backdoor, stairs lead up to the second floor. The ceiling is higher in the back half of the room near the stairs.

Behind the bar stands a heavy-set, balding, middle-aged Human male. He wears a plain white apron that is surprising clean as he laconically cleans mugs and serves food and drink to the patrons sitting at the bar. Hanging on the wall behind him is a massive crossbow. It is loaded.

The Barkeep sees the three companions enter, he looks in their direction and smiles, "What can I get ya for?"

Finn follows Amira around the corner into a small service area and stables. It is a nice little courtyard behind the Dirty Dog with a small warehouse area and some room for horses. Amira motions toward the warehouse area as to where she is headed. There are no stable boys or attendants visible back here. Finn feels like something is off and as he scans around the enclosed yard, he spots several crouching figures in various places around the perimeter.

Just as he prepares to alert Amira to the hidden figures, another person, a Human male, enters the yard and calls out to Amira.

An unknown hooded person crosses the street and follows Finn. Amira, and the wagon into the tavern's rear courtyard.

Stepping out of what shadow is provided by the building opposite the tavern he walks up to the merchant unloading her wares, with gloved hands held open and just under the cowl on his cape which is still drawn over his head. He speaks with a friendly if almost cheerful voice and makes his inquiry, "Excuse me, but may I ask if you are in the market for some additional cargo on your next voyage out of the roost?"

The Barkeep nods his head at Arwi and Nessia as they place their orders. "Tea, ehh?" he says to Arwi. "I'll see what I can do. Eight silver for you." He turns to Nessia and produces an awkward smile, as if it is not something he does often. With a slight dip of his head, "And just five silver for you, milady. I'll have that bread, stew, and ale right up." He waits for a moment then clears his throat in Kelarith's direction, "And what's it you need, friend? Just wanna stand around and stare? Well, that'll cost ya one silver anyway, so might as well order somethin'ta eat and drink. It is what we do here, ya know?"

I decided to unhide the action that's going on out in the courtyard, just assume those of you inside the tavern have no idea what's happening out there.

The monk strolls nonchalantly behind the wagon, naginata in his right hand and carried casually over his left shoulder at a slight angle (ready to swing), and calls out cheerfully, "A fine morning dear comrades! It's truly a lovely day to be disemboweled now, wouldn't you say?" As he speaks he sweeps the yard with his gaze, stopping momentarily to look pointedly at each badly hidden figure. Turning to put his back to the wagon, he clucks his tongue and sighs, "But, of course, if you were simply trying to leave unnoticed, I'm happy to pretend that you've done so should anyone ask. Or, better, for a mere gold piece, each, I'll gladly give you a brief master class in lurking and clarify the errors you made. I mean no offense when I tell you, you all really would benefit from a bit of remedial training in the effective use of lighting and shadows in the art of ambush preparation." He tilts his head questioningly with a slight shrug of his shoulders as he awaits their reply.

The Barkeep looks up at Kelarith, a bit of a sneer on his lips. "Ain't everyone lookin' fer work. I tell ya what, you pass me another one of them silvers and I will come up with something for ya. I keep my ears open, I know people and things. Let me get that meal for you, though, stranger. Have a seat, not too crowded yet this morning. Avros over there tends to drive more folk off that draw 'em in off the streets," he chuckles, jerking a thumb toward the minstrel singing and playing in the corner.

Before the newcomer in the courtyard can react to Finn's challenge, six dirty Goblins leap up from their hiding places and attack. Each one flings a short javelin, two of which are aimed at Finn.

Amira rumbles, "Rao's balls!" as she dodges a javelin. One of the oxen bleats loudly as a javelin sinks into its flank. The Baklunish merchant turns and runs to the side of the wagon, probably going for the loaded crossbow she keeps there.

Finn needs to dodge one on-target javelin.

Rindo may act freely.

The monk gives the goblins a puzzled look, and asks, "What? Seriously?" as he carelessly swats the javelin away with his hand, down into the dirt under the wagon. He sighs, "Well, okay then; disembowelment it is. . ." and whirls the vicious naginata into a ready guard.

After ordering their food and drink, the three companions move toward a nearby empty table. As they are about to sit, Arwi and Kelarith both hear what sounds like their friend Finn shouting and Amira yell from somewhere to the rear of the bar. A quick look shows a closed door behind the bar and another one in the far left corner of the room, both leading toward the rear of the building and where the coach yard and stables must be. Another closed door leads off to the right off past another small seating area to the right of the entrance. It sounds like trouble, though no one else in the Dirty Dog seems to have heard it, or more likely, no one cares that they heard it.

Six Goblins have revealed themselves and have made the first move. The one nearestGoblin 1 Amira growls in heavily accented Common, "Gahh, walk away, stupid Humans, we take your goods. You no bother or we bash you!" Half of them begin readying wicked looking flails while the others take up javelins to throw again. As they do this, the double doors to the warehouse area are flung wide, startling the oxen and a huge, 8-foot tall Goblinoid creature leaps out. It is wearing some armor and wielding a heavy, curved falchion. It growls low and slashes at the nearest ox, splitting its head in two. The draft animal cannot even cry out before it's dead body hits the ground.

Finn may take an action. Rindo may do something else if he wants to do more than take 1 step back.

The first 6 Goblins are all SM -1 while the new, larger Goblinoid is SM 1

The smaller Goblins are harder to hit, -1, while the other fella is bigger and easier to hit, +1

Arwi's ears perked up a bit and he looked towards the back door.

 

"Amira's in trouble out back." he said and he stood up and hurried towards the wooden door.
