As he approached the first riddle, Garn glanced over at the stranger briefly with a childlike smile, then back at the chest and keys. The obvious first move would be to see if any of the keys matched the lock. "Oh, it's the keys and the lock. Let's see 'em," Garn said as he laid down his two silver coins, examining the keys.

Farah learns the entry fee to the race is 5 sp. The goal is to swim upstream through the rushing waters of the Ifolon to reach a rusted spear sticking out of a rotten wooden post, then bring the spear back to the dock. There are no rules regarding the use of familiars.

Farah also eavesdrops on the blue-skinned woman and elegant drow. She learns the drow offered to cast a longstrider spell on the blue-skinned woman. The blue-skinned woman declined the offer, motioned toward the pier, and declared she wanted to win on her own.

Garn and Vir examine the puzzle in front of them. Each key is made of a different metal - one bronze, one copper, one silver, and one gold. Close examination of the box reveals that its lock is shaped like a dragon with a fluted crest, and the edges of the box are decorated with engravings of pearls and shells.

"Hrmm, this lock isn't made of any of those metals... Oh, it's a dragon. You know what dragons like? Gold. Maybe the answer is gold?"

Garn held the gold key, raising an eyebrow toward the stranger as he hesitated to use it.

Wandile watched the end of the contest, eyeing up the two Drow attendants and Bronzefang herself, trying to judge whether he could take them. After a moment, he figured it was probably an even break - and besides all that he wanted to! "You'll be cheering for me Piper?" he asked the kenku with a smile, "I'll probably have to put you down for this." He swung the bard off his shoulders with both ape-like arms, sliding through the crowd surprisingly nimbly to reach Vars. "You allowed to bet on yourself Vars?" he asked the little goblin, recognising him. "No point going in if you're not confident right!" He offers forward five sliver pieces. "Do I have to beat all of them to win, or do I get my money back each time? Keep it rolling over if I do."

He swaggered over to the table, and sat wide legged over the chair opposite, planting his elbow on the table with a thud. "Well let's see if they still make you recruits as tough as they used to!" he challenged, his tattoo now glaringly obvious on the exposed arm.

When one of the draw soldiers stepped up, he met their hand with his own meaty paw, and locked eyes, grinding his fearsome jaws into a grin. "Ready?" His muscles bulged as he threw his all into the contest.

Maul . Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 2d6 + 4 bludgeoning damage.

Flail . Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 1d8 + 4 bludgeoning damage.

Javelin [4] . Thrown/Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, ranged 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 1d6 + 4 piercing damage.

Bonus Actions:

Manifest Echo . magically manifest an echo of yourself in an unoccupied space you can see within 15 feet of you. This echo is a magical, translucent, gray image of you that lasts until it is destroyed, until you dismiss it as a bonus action, until you manifest another echo, or until you're incapacitated. Your echo has AC 14 + your proficiency bonus, 1 hit point, and immunity to all conditions. If it has to make a saving throw, it uses your saving throw bonus for the roll. It is the same size as you, and it occupies its space. On your turn, you can mentally command the echo to move up to 30 feet in any direction (no action required). If your echo is ever more than 30 feet from you at the end of your turn, it is destroyed.

When you take the Attack action on your turn, any attack you make with that action can originate from your space or the echo's space. You make this choice for each attack.

When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your echo moves at least 5 feet away from it, you can use your reaction to make an opportunity attack against that creature as if you were in the echo's space.

Echo Swap . You teleport, magically swapping places with your echo at a cost of 15 feet of your movement, regardless of the distance between the two of you.

Second Wind . 1/1 (Short Rest) Regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your fighter level.

Reactions:

Class Features:

Action Surge . 1/1 (Short Rest) You can take one additional action.

Vir generally had a mind for riddles, but this one appeared to be eluding them. The Kobold's answer seemed as right as any that they could come up with, so they nodded.

"As wise a choice as I can see."

They knew that there were many among the denizens of Jigow who might look down on a Kobold, especially one taking on airs as the one before them currently was. The little creature's armor looked more aspirational than practical, several sizes too big. Yet Vir did not respond with mockery or contempt. They might have in their youth, but the mistakes of the last few years had taught them never to underestimate anyone. They needed to be more than the dumb soldier, as the dumb soldier was what had nearly brought their whole Clan to ruin.

"Are you a local here? I am Vir, of Clan Corath."

They didn't think the Kobold was, given how wide eyed they'd been as they'd approached the table, but it never hurt to ask.

Piper nods happily and replies, "Yes! You're the biggest, strongest one here!" , she says this without really looking at any others here and full of confidence. Before she knows it, her feet are on the ground, but for a moment it felt like she flew down from the bugbear's shoulders. Her heart raced, it was so exciting! For a moment the thought of Wandile holding her above his head with her eyes closed crossed her mind. Not right now. Maybe later. She hops to the goblin, "Oh! Oh! I will bet as well! All in on Wandile, no doubt! Why, just the other day I saw him pick up a whole horse like it was a baby!", she says hoping to put a bit of worry into the competitors and handing the goblin the 5sp.

"I'm Garn! Oh, no I'm not from around here. I was raised in a temple of The Luxon out in the country. What's Clan Corath?"

His worries quashed, Garn took the gold key and attempted to use it to open the box confidently.

Namira was only partially disappointed when they heard that only one person could participate she didn't particularly want to, but she did want to win and though her familiar had a very good chance. She'd trained them very well and shared her blessings with him. He knew her mind so hopped about excitedly on her shoulder, knowing he could fly through the water as easily as the air. Nodding as her, it was clear that she would allow her friend to participate, but the blue skin woman seemed like she may be born to the water and a clear favorite to win.

The lavender-blue fey goblin girl sidled up to the one who seemed to be invigilating and spoke to her kin in her goblin tongue. "So sister... so frustrating it can be to have the longshanks be so short in the ear, no? Maybe you could help a fellow goblin? I am wondering if there rules against familiars taking part or the use of magics... and how heavy is that spear?" Her voice was calm and slow, which was uncharacteristic of the sharp guttural language, from her it held a softened breathiness that more likened it to a gentle purr, had Farah had been rubbing off on the goblin genasi? Purhaps.

That at least, they'd guessed correctly.

"From where do you hail? Have your travels ever taken you to Urzin, Warrior Garn? The roaming village of the Brokenveil Marsh? That is where the bulk of my Clan dwells."

Their Clan were warrior-scholars, led by Headmaster Vakesh Corath, and had found a home within Urzin for the opportunities it allowed them to travel and visit their kin at the Ashguard and Rockguard garrisons.

"We are warrior-scholars, a mercenary Clan, currently in service to the Noble Den Daev'yana."

Though the war was over, it seemed the Grand Strategist Zyn Daev'yana still had need of their Clan's services.

"The spear weighs 3 pounds. There are no rules regarding magic or familiars taking part in the competition," says the goblin rather curtly. She begins stroking her chin as if contemplating the rules she had put into place.

"I will allow it," says Vars. "You have to beat every challenger to win. But you only have to win the current contest to win your money back."

With that, one of the drow recruits sits across from Wandile. She grins as Wandile exposes his tattoo. "Well-seasoned, now aren't ya? It will be a pleasure showing you what young blood can do." She puts her elbow on the table, grips Wandile's hand, and pulls with all her strength.

Wandile has too much force for the drow to handle and slams her hand onto the table for the first victory.

Garn attempts to put the gold key in the lock. Suddenly an electric current can be felt passing through the wooden box.

Garn, make a Reflex Save (DC 16) or take 2 lightning damage.

"How bad is it?"

Vir asked once the Kobold had recovered, taking the box from them so they could take their turn.

"Sunbreaker Olomon, an Elder of Urzin, was a fan of tapestries. One of his favorites depicts a number of Dragons doing battle over a mountain peak. While I've never seen a Dragon up close, I recognize the fluted crest there."

They selected the Bronze key, and placed it in the lock.

"Urzin? Nope, never been. I came here from the Barbed Fields."

Garn's arm lurched back from the zap, but not quite quickly enough to avoid the pain.

"Yeouch!"

He shook his hand back and forth in the air.

"Ah, wasn't too bad, just shocked me." Garn grinned, only realizing the pun after the fact. "Hah, shocked!"

Garn awaited the result of Vir's choice of key anxiously.

Wandile felt oddly invigorated by Piper's enthusiasm, and his chest swelled with inner fire. Ready for the next one. He offered the draw soldier a congratulatory pat on her back, long arm snaking round over the table further than it should be able. "It's the seasoning that makes all the difference," he advised, "can't teach you everything in training. Still, get a few proper battles under you and you'll be a force to be reckoned with." His grin slipped slightly, even as he spoke. He knew it wasn't wrong, but he'd been there. As many good recruits get chewed up and spat out as learn to shine. He hoped she'd never actually have to find out. Shaking off the gloom, he boomed "Right, you're next? Let's go!"

This time, a frown knit his brow as he engaged. The next competitor was definitely stronger. That or a few years of laziness had left him with less stamina than he thought...

Farah approaches Namira and hands her the 5 pieces of silver.

"Here, this should cover the entry fee. Let's show these guppies what we're capable of, Wipp included!"

The tabaxi thief grins ear-to-ear, looking over at one of the orcs who had passed them earlier and giving them a wink. Turning back to Namira, she speaks in a more hushed tone, though she doesn't seem to be trying for secrecy.

"By the way, Nami, I overheard that blue lady talking with her drow friend. To put it briefly, she seems really intense about this contest. Be careful with Wipp."

The bushy mass of hair with ears nodded, she was somewhat concerned about Wipp. Wipp on the otherhand was excited, having shifted into his fey quasit form, tucked his own rather large ears into a very tight pink swim cap, before beginning to stretch by the waterside his tiny tiger patterned thong swimsuit. Wipp then gave Farah a wink and a claw. "Rawr"

Namira snickered and paid the entry fee for Wipporwill, then took a seat on the embankment feet dangling into the water. "This should be fun, too bad they don't have those oysters."
