3 - Shraevyn's Tomb

Sellsword

Recommended Posts

You traverse the corridor carefully as a group, with Jack and Kord testing the walls and floors ahead while Mandons and Lirion watch over them, weapons drawn. Theoath, Amarandé and Valandil meander in a loose group behind them, with the half-orc Alarim silently bringing up the rear. The luminescence from the glowing orbs spoils the infravision of the elves, but provides adequate light for all to be at least somewhat at ease within the tomb, dispelling most of the shadows.

In the corridor, Jack and Kordannaghlan seem as confident as they can be that no traps lurk ahead. While Valandil examines the walls, Amarandé focuses on a detail of the mural that catches his eye. Although neither mosaic represents a particular battle or king to his knowledge, a carefu inspection of the tiles around the king's sword reveal the runes Giventhar etched into its surface.

Giventhar, it is said, is a weapon that was crafted on the Astral Plane. It once belonged to a powerful githyanki lord who wielded it with great skill. A wandering adventurer looking for blood slew the githyanki lord in battle, took the sword, and returned to the Prime Material Plane. He was immediately pursued by the lord's comrades, bent on revenge and vowing to recover the weapon. The human defeated the group, but he received a severe wound that eventually killed him.

The eventual fate of the weapon, as well any potential connection to Shraevyn, is unknown. No records exist, at least to the collected knowledge of the group, that indicate the location of the powerful sword.

The silence is broken as Valandil discovers something in his search of the right-hand wall. The horse's bit is loose, actually a latch that is cleverly concealed among the mosaic tiles. Kordannaghlan inspects the latch for traps, and not finding any, gives it a tug. A well-concealed secret door slides ajar, leading through the wall--but before anyone can pass, Kord stops them, pointing at tiny pinpointed perforations along the stone frame--likely signs of a gas trap of some sort, but if there is a mechanism to disarm it, neither he nor Jack can find it.

Stale air fill s your nostrils as it exits the secret door. Red light from the corridor spills through the crack, but the chamber beyond is cloaked too heavily in shadow to reveal anything more without fully opening the door and potentially triggering the trap.

Amarandé relays this information to the group. "Well, if there was ever a doubt whether we'd found the correct hidden tomb..."

As the gas trap is pointed out, he reaches into a small pouch on his belt and throws a small handful of flour into the air at the secret door; squinting, he carefully observes if there is any air flow or breeze as the fine powder disperses.

"Do you suppose this is the correct way, or a double bluff?"

There are no obvious traps evident, though on the back of the warrior statue Kordannaghlan discovers the faint outline of a small door etched into the base. It is obvious the door was meant to be seen. Running a hand along the outline of the door, the gnome discovers the latch, a small bump near the bottom right corner.

"That would be very unusual, but maybe. It would be a great trick on tomb robbers. This trap though, a good way to stop would-be thieves. Does anyone have a way of not breathing in the gas?"

Taking a deeper look at the trapped door, Jack has an idea how to disarm it. Gas traps require storage, they're usually fed by pressurized bladders. Running a thin tool along the frame without actually crossing the threshold of the door, he finds a slot large enough to insert the tool. From his small satchel of thieves picks and tools, he withdraws a thin razor with a long handle. Running it along the slot until he encounters resistance, he gives it a gentle push until the tool runs freely again. He's fairly confident that whatever mechanism it is that delivers the trapped gas has been severed, which should allow you to pass freely.

The elves peer into the dark room beyond the secret door. There are no heat signatures present, but the cool black walls, devoid of any heat whatsoever, reveal the chamber to be approximately 20X20 feet. As the light from the red globes in the corridor don't reach into the room, you would need a manual light source to investigate further.

OOC: Please let me know if you're going to investigate the newly-discovered secret room and how you go about doing so. Otherwise, continuing down the corridor into the larger chamber beyond is the only other obvious option at the moment.

"Oh, nicely done, Jack! Do you feel like checking out the rest of the room now. There could be useful stuff in there, or information at least. Maybe take in one of the casters with you to look for that kind of thing... and I'll come too in case you need a swordsman in a hurry."

Mandons will relight his lantern to provide illumination for the investigators.

"Hold on, give me a minute. This is a pretty fancy deal they have going on here. It's a poison gas trap." With a surgical sweep of a throat-cut razor, he severs the cords linking the mechanism together. He jabs the air perilously with his deadly sharp razor as he talks. "They spared no expense trying to kill us. Which I think is pretty offensive, on account of my personal aversion to breathing poison. It's hard not to take it personally." He slips his tools back into his pouch and looks the room over for anything of note.

Lirion nods his head to Kord to thank and conratulate on him for the trap hack. "you just saved our lives..." then looks in the direction of the secret door and beyonf "now, this is what I was talking about..." giving clear reference to the previous conversation he had with Mandons.

" I should have noticed this passage, anyway... who's coming to have a look in here?" he points at the chamber to be inspected while fueling his lantern with a flask of oil

Theo says "Maybe just a small group of us should investigate. This way the odds of setting off a trap are lessened by the number of people inside the room. Once a room is clear then the rest of us should enter."

"Never a Dwarf around when you need one, eh? I say, open the door first and wait a breath, see if the disarm worked. And some waiting out here is good, in case the door seals itself shut."

Lirion grabs one of his flight arrows and places it on the burning fire of the lamp, making a quick-to-burn rudimental mini torch. He then trows the lit arrow in through the chamber they're about to inspect, hoping to grasp a sight of what awaits in there.

Maybe the burning arrow could also reveal if there's more gas inside the room, but Lirion is mostly focusing on the quick view the burning arrow can provide.

Lirion's flaming arrow clacks on the ground as he tosses it into the chamber. The flame is small, but adequate to dispel the shadows. The light reveals a chamber filled with books and scroll tubes. A large desk is pushed securely against the northwest wall. Jack, listening carefully for any sign of noise within the chamber, holds up a hand in caution before anyone enters.

Without warning, clicking noises erupt from behind the bookcases. Before you have a chance to react, you see what looks like dozens of small skeletal spiders rush toward you. Their eyes glow a fiery crimson. They are small, each perhaps the size of a cat, but they have long legs with sharpened bone spurs nearly the length of a dagger.

OOC: Actions please! Initiative roll after actions are declared will determine the order of things. To answer the obvious question--yes, you can just slam the door on them, but whether that prevents some or all of them from reaching the corridor will be determined by initiative. Mandons, Jack & Lirion are closest the door, the others are nearby in the corridor behind them.

"Quickly, let's block the door with two of us warriors to hold them up."

Mandons takes up one such position with sword ready to slice through any spiders that come within his reach and shield for extra protection.

Seeing the swarm of skittering undead rush through the torchlight, Amarandé steps up behind the frontmost fighters, holding his staff aloft in one hand and splaying his arms and robes wide. "BACK, BEINGS OF EVIL! FLY UPON THE TOUCH OF MYSTRA'S BREATH!" and he channels as much of his goddesses power as he can tolerate to Turn Undead.
