Rova 3, 4715 - Fair Fortune Livery

Rexus.jpg.5ae3c8b705f3e0d11bfa11bcbd73fb95.jpgThe evening passed without comment, no raids on houses, not even any announcements. In the public houses there were more quiet whisperings and distrustful glances but life seemed to continue as normal.

Rexus was at the Fair Fortune Livery as soon as curfew broke waiting. He was wearing similar though less bloody clothes as the day before and was pacing nervously. As soon as he saw people arrive a relieved smile broke out on his face.

The building itself was an aged stable. It leaned slightly to one side and its roof was precariously propped up by worn wooden walls. The air around the building reeked of urine. Peering in through the doors barely hanging from the frame, you can spot the 13 horse stalls filled with broken desks, scuffed tables and torn chairs. This discarded rubbish was in turn covered with a healthy layer of dust. Toward the back where the dim light of morning barely reached you saw some space that was walled off with a grate as well as what appeared to be offices toward the back of the building.

"Well, it looks bad," John comments to nobody in particular as he sizes up the place. "The good news is that it smells even worse."

Turning to Rexus, he poses a question, "Who owns the place? The last thing we need are guards questioning us if we're walking out of the place with a bunch of seditious contraband or whatever."

Though she didn't want to make a bad impression the first time they were asked to do a job for their new employer, Alexis was at the mercy of Lilette who fortunately had paid more attention to the actual details of the job than she herself had done. That, and having to explain her new "employment" to her father too had taken up more time than she had already wanted before getting out the door in the morning. Bless his soul, papá was only worried about her, and she did her best to put his mind at ease.

 

Making their way to the Lviery though was a bit of a journey in and of itself, as that took them practically the whole way across the width of the city on Argo Isle. By the time they had arrived, Rexus was already waiting for them, as was a couple of the others.

 

Though she didn't too much mind the smell, occasionally the tenements exhibited its own fair share of interesting odours, she couldn't help but wonder, was this truly where they would find those pacificist bookworms?

 

In any event, it wouldn't do to be impolite, she thought to herself. So she walked up to the young nobleman and started signing something that he probably wouldn't understand, momentarily having forgotten that he has absolutely no clue what all the hand gestures mean... "🤛👌👌🤚 👆👌☝️👇🤞👇🤛 🖐👌👐 🤚🤞🤚 👏👌🙌 🖖👍🤙🤙👎Good morning. How did you sleep?"

She wrinkled her nose a little at the smell of the place but decided it was no worse than home and she was far to tired to care. Stifling a yawn she jerked her head in Alexis's direction while speaking to Rexus. "She wants to know if you slept well."

He gave a small bow, as one would to an equal and pulled a vial from his bag. "I did sleep as well as one might hope in these circumstances. Better given you had healed me. But I had heard you wince, and I thought to bring some more of my tinctures." The vial looked like the potion he had drunk the day before. He turned to take in the rest of the group. "The offer stands for everyone, though sadly my supplies are somewhat limited these days." He then paused, focusing himself on the task at hand.


"Well the sooner we move the slower the dottari question us." He gestured to the stable, obviously hoping someone else would take the lead.

The WhiteAdder pulls out his bullseye lantern and double checks the oil level before lighting it and nodding. He slips into the livery and moves along the opposite set of stalls from John, so they can cover more of the building. He does pull out his rapier as he moves and keeps it in a relaxed grip as he quietly moves down the stables, alert for trouble.

It wasn't that Alexis had any reason to distrust the young nobleman, in fact she was happy to 'hear' that he had rested well and to see him in high spirits. It's just that, already having some trouble with communicating with others on a regular basis to begin with, she grew to be naturally self-reliant if slightly sceptical of the world around her.

 

So instinctively she took a quick sniff of the contents of the vial after he had given it to her. It carried the distinct metallic odour slightly reminiscent of asparagus. Given her recent stints working with the Iomedaeans and Sarenites, she would likely have been able to recognize this smell with her eyes closed.

 

"Dahng gyu." She tried her best to say the words, though without the ability to hear herself speak of course, the words never actually quite come out the same.

 

Quickly, Alexis flashed Lilette a smile of content, then drank and swallowed the potion. Looking around her, and noting that a couple of the group had already moved into the stables, she nodded to the rest of the party that she was ready.

The rank scent of mildew fills your nostrils as you enter deeper into the building, tinged with another more acrid scent. It is a familar one, the smell of the back alleys that weave through so much of the city. White Adder's lantern emits a narrow beam, the light truncating against the back wall of the stable. There seem to be some open doorways, offices instead of stables by the look of them, but the walls of those rooms still stand and block the dim light spilling in outside from the outside of the bright cone. The back door still has a chain tightly wrapped and padlocked around its handle.

The grate you had seen from the enterance looks to be a full sized gate, firmly locked. Looking down the hallway beyond the gate what looks to be the remains of a hidden door sits lopsided, held up by one struggling hinge.

 

John, Lilette and Saria

You hear a low growl coming from one of the back offices, though you do not see what it belongs to.

"Did anyone else hear that?" John asks, drawing his weapon. "I think something else is in here with us." The inquisitive inquisitor investigates further inside the livery, exploring the lit areas one by one in search of the strange animal sounds he heard.

As much as he's yearning to step down the hallway and explore the area beyond the once-hidden door, he knows the group needs to make sure the whole edifice is secure before the group begins delving deeper into the dark depths beyond.

Alexis didn't like how the others had gone so far ahead without the backup. Her and Lilette had a groove, they always had each other's backs, not like… Gods where are they even going…?

 

Trying to swallow her anxiety about this rambunctious group, Alexis cast a worried glance at her friend as she surged forward, the deaf girl reached out with her life force till she felt that of her forward-most ally John, and created a life-preserving bond.
