Story continued from: Chapter 2 - Traveling Book Shop


The 12th to 13th of Renewal, year 20


The trip back to Carisport goes smoothly enough. Our adventurers are able to connect with a late leaving Caravan at about noon, quickly get contracts signed, and head out.

The caravan consists of six wagons - five of them farmers carrying pickled goods, meads and wines, some grain from last season, leathers, and wool, and one is an alchemists' wagon. Newvale has a surprisingly robust community of alchemists.


The Newvale Gazette, several copies of which are circulating among the caravan, mentions efforts to expand the colonies, with mention of settlers passing through Newvale headed north east towards the swamps.

The Vedan government has issued a statement, published in this gazette, that they are formally opposed to expansion and colonization. An opinion piece following the statement says that Vedans are worried about their own island's population declining, and the fear that colonies may one day grow into competing, or even enemy states.

Delegates from Kol Garom are in town to discuss trade.

Farnin, a notable Vedan wizard has settled outside of town and has hinted at starting a small academy.

Travelers in the caravan have plenty of rumors about strange cults forming in fringe communities. Apparently a trio have begun gathering students to train in some kind of new military academy where students learn to fight with their mind, heart and spirit instead of weapons. No one is quite sure where this academy will be. Some villagers east of Newvale have built a shrine to mushrooms.


Ganley, one of the traveling alchemy crafstmen, expresses fascination with the mushroom cult and wonders what new kinds of fungi they've found. He's weighing the possibility of taking some apprentices on an expidition there.


On the second day (the 13th of Renewal), the adventurers spot some familiar figures: a group of Highwolves, perhaps the same group, is acosting a group of deer leather clad elves, who stand calm and stoic as the humans encircle them with their leader shouting insults and threats in the face of the apparent elvesx leader.

They notice the approaching caravan and seem to decide their business with the elves is concluded, and rapidly mount their own horses and depart.

The caravan stops to trade with the elven caravan for a bit. The elves have their wares packed mostly onto the backs of large elk, and are mostly trading fine fabrics and various artisan tools. They seem eager to look at what food the Newvale caravan is carrying.

The elves' elk are all wearing colorful cloth around their lower legs, like socks with the toes cut out, and wood chimes hanging from antlers make gentle noises.

These are nomidic elves, known for their reputation in spirit magic incorporated into their crafting. Though their lifestyle seems simple, they are not a primitive or undeveloped culture. The few children in the group carry green leaf bound books with them, and spend much of their time reading. It seems even on the road, education is a priority.

Maybell devours the rumors, putting the lot onto her memory as she lets the little bits of information sit within. There's the grand declaration of states, but also academies to battle and magic? Cults of mushrooms? Soooo many interesting little tidbits on which they world is expanding!

 

As the Highwolves show themselves again and are deterred by the group passing by, Maybell cannot help but to sigh "Right now they are smart enough to know when to retreat when there's trouble... but that lot is just asking to get into more trouble than they can handle sooner than later"

 

Maybell is quick to try and make new friends of the elves. She tries to get conversation going and certainly, to point them towards Riverhall, May would likely love to see them and her family and community is certainly producing all sorts of new and delicious foodstuffs to sate halfling palates. She's curious about how their lives are, what they believe in and what the little ones are studying about.

"One day we have to do something about those idiots," chelia said to Maybell, "but not today I think."

Then she moves towards the elves, glad to be talking in her mother tongue again. She chatted with them, gave a quick recount of her own adventures and asked what they were doing outside of Talariel. If they were looking for something specific, she would help them if she could (she had traveled some part of this continent, so probably could give some advice).

Khaine enjoyed the trip, he spoke with the farmers about the weather, the crops, the usual farming talk. It felt like being home in a way. He enjoyed the feeling, but was more surprised that he didn't miss it as much as he thought he might.
He found the tale of the trio starting a military academy interesting. He wondered if their mind, heart and spirit instead of weapons philosphy was similar to his own. Could one of the trio be his old master? Or perhaps his master would also hear of the school and go see what they could teach and what they could learn. He made a mental note to look into it.
As for the mushroom worshippers, well it took all sorts! Sure mushrooms were important for healthy forests, and made great ingrediants, but a shrine seemed excessive!

Khaine watched the brigands run off and was pleased they would not have to fight. He agreed with Chelia, they would most likely become too much trouble soon and need to be dealt with. Perhaps it would be a job the group would pick up in town. He hadn't much experience with elves, except Chelia of course. These elves seemed a lot more alien than the fighter who he travelled alongside. He wondered too about the bells and the 'socks' but he said little. Instead he wondered what they had to trade, and if they had any interest in goblin books.

These elves, their own tribe call themselves the Tananoeria, are stoic at first, but the familiar sight of a caravan out of Newvale pack with food and chatty halflings quickly has them opening up - by elven standards.

Chalia

Their dialect is a bit different, but Chalia soon finds that she and the Tananoeria can understand each other reasonably well in their own elvish. Chalia's pale skin, a feature more common to cavern elves, seems a bit of a curiosity to them - the elves of Talariel are less cosmopolitan, and tend to spend more of their lives wandering under the open sky.

The Tananoeria are exploring this world, and getting to know the other inhabitants. Talariel will always await them.

Kek

These elves are from Talariel, their homeland, or what part of it was deposited on this world two decades ago. Talariel is now located a ways to the west and a bit north of the Vedan colonies. "We have permanent settlements at home in Talariel, but most of the time we live under the sky, wandering as our ancestors taught us." 

As they discuss their ways with Kek, he learns of their value for embracing discomfort in life, and harmony in their society.

They worry about the many different folk on this new world. There is so much unclaimed land and certainly room for people to expand and colonize, but they worry about how people will agree who may use what land.

Maybell

The little ones seem to each carry a book, but the themes are different. The youngest carry a book that seems to be designed for general education - spelling, mathematics, the natural world, and meditation techniques. The older children seem to be studying various forms of magic. As she asks more and more questions, she finds that only a few of them study to become spellcasters, but that their community values understanding various magic traditions insomuch as it lends to their ability to craft quality wares and objects.

Flick

The chimes calm the elk, calm the elves, and calm those with whom they meet. "We travel in the open, in a large group. We leave tracks. If we need to hide, then the chimes can always be removed. But wild beasts won't bother a group this large."

Khaine

None of this group speak goblin, But one of the elves, a woman with greying hair, decorated with bright green feathers and vivid tatoos, seems interested in buying the two books of goblin art. She is willing to pay and gold for the books respectively.

Earnings from caravan escort:


Evening


The same hobgoblin stands guard outside the small brick building as was there 12 days ago when the adventurers first met Shoruuz, or 'Neil' as he asked them to call him. There are also a couple coaches with drivers and crew waiting outside as well. It would seem the little embassy has some visitors this evening.

The hobgoblin doorman looks surprised to the adventurers returned: "Hrm!" is all he says. With a hand gesture, he asks the five to wait as he opens the door and goes inside. A minute later he returns with a piece of paper with some writing on it in goblin. Looking at it with a look of concentration, he carefully sounds out what was written down: "Neel s happee yos bak. Wate short."  Nodding with satisfaction, he tucks the paper away in a pocket, and returns to watching silently.

The wait isn't long. Only a couple minutes later, the door swings open and a trio of well dressed human men are ushered out by a large and rather impatient looking bugbear - Neil. "Yes, yes, yes. Neil think about it. Send letters with answer. Good night. Be safe!" One of the men is stumbling, still trying to do up an expensive looking boot with brass gilding and laces around the edges. Looks like it's made of some kind of exotic reptile skin.

After ushering the adventurers inside, Neil turns with a worried look on his face: "Please, you have news?"


 

Weylin leaves the group upon reaching Carisport.

"It is good to see you again, our friend Neil. We definitely have good news" she says to alleviate the obvious concerns the Bugbear is having, specially given how he so hastily threw out the meeting partners he was having a chat with to accommodate them "Lets get comfortable somewhere quiet where we can chat pleasantly" says the halfling to make sure Neil has the time to get his men he doesn't want hearing about this out of the way.

 

Once it seems like everything is settled and they are in private, Maybell has no problems making their report "The item has been recovered, Chalia, if you may?" She asks, bidding the elven woman to produce it from their bags "Furthermore, we have ascertained the nature of the vermin, where they come from and with some luck, we have cut down their origin so they don't bother your people again" So says Maybell, after which she proceeds to report on the findings of their adventure. What the infected goblins are, who their leader was, how the condition was deliberately passed onto by the head leader in order to control other goblins and their contact with the other planes. Which is why they stole the trophy from this hold.

"Additionally, one other hold should know the basics of this..." She says, telling him of the hobgoblin they rescued and which hold he was a scout for "However, we did not let him know of your special item. They were unconscious during the fight and only learned of what happened afterwards. We never mentioned the item nor did they see it as once it was retrieved we stowed it on our packs"

Khaine wanted to ask the Hobgoblin if he knew anyone who would have interest in the remaining goblin books. But he stayed quiet. Everything in its own time. He simply waited for now. It was time for Maybell to lead the way.

Chelia took the crown and handed it over.

"He also doesn't know your hold, as we only used the name 'Neill'," she added, "he might be able to figure it out eventually, but that should give you some time. Oh, and we liberated some books. They're mostly written in the goblin language, so if you're interested, maybe we can make a separate deal on those."
