Wherever you were in Chrystal you received a message from Captain Banner, he is charged with the protection of the border between the living and the undead/demon-infested land beyond the barrier wall. Nortonia, the jewel in the crown of Chrystal. Yet it is more guarded than and wizard's vault, the party are shown to the captain's office once they arrive.

 

Captain Banner looked at his new party and spoke in a soft voice "I cannot stress the importance of your mission, One Eye Whalebone looks to gain all that gold in the vault. The sum could be as much as 1m gold, there are similar amounts scattered about. I know the temptation will be great but I ask that you refrain from looting, well at least until the job has been done. Now, about the job in question. You will need to get to the vault before he does, then, close the portal to the abyss. Do this and you can keep whatever you can carry back, I am sending with you a cleric of Isis. It will be she who can close the portal, now, do you have any questions" he asked with the same soft voice.

At first glance the elf woman appears to be one of those ranger folk.. she has that style and look, but closer inspection suggests she is a wizard.

She glances at the first of the proposed company to speak, thinking it a pertinent question he'd asked. Not waiting around, she adds another question.. "I'm curious. It sounds like you're sending us in while this Whalebone provides us with a diversion to get our task completed, given that you've had time to attempt this at other times and didn't do so.", her delivery unaccented and very clear. She continues.. "I'm also concerned. The recruitment of people for your cause hasn't exactly been subtle. It could be Whalebone will soon know about us, or already does. It could be he will decide to use 'us' as as a diversion to get his task completed. Is there any plan to fool Whalebone as to who we are, where we are going and what we are tasked with doing?"

Nyll seemed to perch herself behind the others observing the preparations and questions being asked. She didn't really care if Whalebone knew the group was coming, at least now, she can be paid to do what she has been itching to do for years now. That was to get vengeance on the death of her twin sister. She will never forgive him for their capture and how easily the two were abused and tortured for sport. Having to fight her own sister for survival. While she allowed her sister to win most of the time, the madness crept in, and she died.

Simply waiting for the time to move out, she allowed her new companions to do the talking, they would figure out a plan, and she could get in close and slit the pirates throat. At least that is how she keeps envisioning it in her mind. Her hand subtly traced a finger around the pommel of her blade while lost in momentary thought.

Aidan gave a shake of the head, the motion being a bit exaggerated with her horns sticking up so high. "It all seems mostly cut and dry, if not easy mind you... Get to the portal and close it before Whalebone gets to it, I'll at the very least attempt to keep everyone in mostly one piece on the trip."

Ragged looking warrior looks at the Captain. His equipment at one time likely was worth this entire building and two adjacent ones at least, but use and abuse of it made it, while plentiful not particularly presentable. Maybe only the large Greatsword he leaned on was still in the same state it was when it was new. But that was mostly because it was made to look unassuming. The man himself seemed like a Human at the longer end of his middle age. Scarred and tired-looking, with large bags under his eyes, his voice is deep, almost impossibly so, but it has the husk of someone who hasn't slept in several days.

"Just a simple question." He unlodges a stone from the grove in the sole of his boot with a tip of the sword and there is a lazy smile like he just downed the dragon. "We don't like the Demons, we don't like the Pirate, why we don't make a noise close to his camp attracting beasties there and leaving them to their disagreements? While in the meantime we go about our business quiet-like. With some luck we'll have just one party of baddies on our trail and that during a return."

There is an almost shy smile on the bearded face "Forgive the oldtimer last time I passed these parts Whalebone was working for a...don't remember his name but seeing how he's dead it doesn't matter. Still Captain, sure but only had an undermanned Sloop, about 20 man tops. Should' a killed him then, but had some worry of my own."

Considering Whalebone hasn't called another man "boss" in at least two decades. It meant either time was kind to the "oldtimer" who barely had a few greys around his lips and none on his head, or he lied pretty convincingly. Since as Captain checked Whalebone's first commission as a Captain was on a Sloop "Hangman Fortune" under foul-tempered Half-Orc Six-thumb Briggs who sailed one of rare Man O Wars in these waters and had 10 ships under his command at his height..

Captain Banner tried to answer all the questions as they were asked "so the city, anyone who attempts to move 100 men without attracting the "wildlife" will find that the occupants have good hearing. They also have a good smell that will attract the undead, now your question young miss.

We will not need to announce we are sending a party after him as he will already guess that we will send one, as soon as you start fighting in that city every demon or undead will know that you are there. If you can use noise to kill him then please do so, ah here is Mizzi everyone, she will be accompanying you".

The silver-haired woman steps into the room "hi captain, my affairs are in order and I am ready to depart as soon as the others are" she said. The captain then says "right, here you are guys. You each get one of these" you are then handed a ring. He says that the magic held within these rings will sustain you, other versions of this ring need a week to attune to you but these do so within one day.

George

George.jpgGeorge is a relatively unassuming man, his appearance is well-worn yet mostly hygienic. George has been content to remain while the others deliberate on approach, it sounds like he has a fairly competent group to work with this time around, and even someone who might be able to heal. Upon Mizzi's entrance however George stands at attention to give her appropriate respect. Upon receipt of a ring that will sustain him his eyebrows raise and he has a hint of a smile "I had worried we'd need to learn how demons taste, this will be of great assistance".

To the captain he asks "If you know which route puts the least demons and undead in our path I'll be for that one. Pitting our enemies against each other sounds great, but I think kicking the nest might be better after stealth fails"

Yuki remarks. She stumbles a bit over the man's name, having to take a moment to recall it. She does side-eye the paladin in heavy armor, however. Stealth may well be out of the question.

Nyll was certainly concerned about the amount of attraction the group will find within the wastes, the paladin and the cleric may appear as a beacon among those who had the sight to sense righteousness of the divine sort. She seemed pleased enough that nobody of the group seemed completely unreasonable to work with. As the rings are being passed out, she holds out a hand, nails well trimmed and hands calloused from the type of work she does. Speaking slowly, "Thank you.." escapes her lips. As she continued to watch the others, she knew that she would most likely be taking lead.

Tanith meanwhile was cogitating on her employers' announcement that they were welcome to loot 'as much as you can carry'. This had her reflecting on her distinct lack of brawn compared to others. Still, she could potentially work on remedying that lack. It wasn't her first concern, keeping her skin on her body occupied that position, but it was certainly up there. The white haired cleric, she glanced at the white haired caster in the company, then the white haired cleric giving her a ring... "Thank you.", occupied the enviable position that she herself usually occupied.. of being non-expendable. The priestess' generosity with gifts served to make up for the fact that she would doubtless be a burden the entire way.

Like, well everyone else, she found herself eyeing her comrades in arms, all of whom she didn't know from a hole in the ground. The one with the pitchfork seemed sturdy, as did the one in the half plate. The one with the massive bow looked useful. The white haired one had the look of a white witch so useful. The goblin, well goblins were always sneaky. Every single one she'd ever met had been so sneakier than her despite her putting a lot of effort into learning.

She turns back to Banner.. "I have to ask, and you are under no obligation to answer, but how is it you know what Whalebones intentions and goals are?" After a moment she adds.. "So.. anyone in that hundred you'd not want to see dead, either by our hand or any others?", clearly asking if there were a spy in Whalebone's ranks.

For a moment she wondered why she was asking such a selfless question, her being a mercenary and an organizer of heists and concluded it couldn't hurt.

Finally she looks over at the white haired witch and offers her a nod, the nod of one Practitioner of The Art, to another.

She gave Yuki a nod "Agreed, and while I'm not bad, I'm not great I suppose. Well not bad for a priestess I suppose."
She started to give the group a look over... but didn't it didn't matter that much afterall, it was so hard to tell if someone was actually good in a tight spot afterall. She took the ring, slipping in onto her finger and giving a polite nod.

The silver-haired Mizzi answered for the captain "we know what we know because fools drink too much and a well-placed "professional lady" trained in pillow talk can coax all manner of information, needless to say, that one of his crew spoke to one of our crew. They have no spies that we know of so please feel free to kill them all" she said.

Opening a scroll Mizzi said "here is our route and as you can see it is a direct road into Nortonia, here, here and here are smaller towns. There are also some villages dotted here and there with some farms also en route, we know because of looters that the land is quite eerie and quiet. There is also a fog-like mist around the city, which adds to the spookiness of the city" she said.

Opening another scroll she shows the city it's self, pointing to the dried riverbed she says "at this point, we will need to act with more caution as we do not know if those gates are open or not. If they are not open then we will have to look for another route in as they are huge, Whalebone will be entering here. I expect that he will have less than his starting men due to attrition, I bet that he will have less than half his troops by then. Are there any further questions" she asked?

Rand's smile doesn't wane as several suspicious glances toward his heavy armor "Yes, yes, I am aware I'm not a picture-perfect sneaker. Unless naked." He shrugged. "It was just an idea if we have someone good with portals, and someone good with sneaking to peal off, do their thing, and portal back to us. Sure, demons ARE everywhere but giving us just a slight edge in numbers of those Pirates has to fight as opposed to those we do, might mean who gets to the goal first. If it is unfeasible then it is unfeasible, no plan survives contact with the enemy and cr*p like that."

As Mizzi mentioned "fools who drink too much" and "pillow talk" he tries to wipe off small, some would say non-existent smudges on the pommel of his longsword which, unlike a large monstrosity, he kept in the scabbard. Under his voice cussing something about a few bad apples ruining noble profession.

He glances toward the maps "Would there be any benefit in visiting one of those villages as info goes, also that thing that resembles a harbor on the North? Is the river still functional, and could we use it for a quick retreat if we manage to secure the boat, one which could be used as the transport for possible loot we get our paws on? If we destroy all others we would leave Whalebone beached...no pun intended." He places his ring without ceremony as he has worn a bunch of them before, those closer to him able to notice a sad sigh as he does that, as he indeed wanted to try Demon Meat or simply already missed a need for looking for food.
