Damaia makes no outwardly threatening motions, though mentally she prepares herself, she had any number of spells she could resort to, if she had to...

"It seems you have me at a disadvantage.. Perhaps we should start with your name..?"

The aura of this man was not one that she appreciated, but she was not going to let that upend her.

Veroth raised a brow at Dae's comment but figured she should not pry deeper. The half-orc was about to wave her off when Dae turned back to ask her final question. He smiled as he listened to her question but his smile quickly faded. "Archon Thalysios. Under his leadership, Anthropoi grew into a major cultural center, attracting scholars, artists, and merchants from across the region." Veroth said setting his work aside. "He was known for his wise rule, and he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his citizens. As the stories go he ruled for 82 years before he passed."

Veroth straightened as he finished, nodding his head as he looked at Dae awaiting any further inquiries.

"That is because I have not told you it, dear child." The figure stated, "Because who have never asked." The figure stepped forward and the shadows followed. "But I have always been there, for you, for your mother." Another wave of cold hit Lulani's form, and a sense of sadness followed it. "Allow me to enlighten, dear child."

The figure's words lingered as she reached a hand into the darkness of her. Robes? Body? Lulani could not be sure. From the darkness, the figure produced a book, and Lulani recognized it instantly. It was the same book that belonged to her mother, the same book she found as a child, and that had stuck with her all these years. She could have sworn it was on her person but now it was in the figure's hands.

"I am Guenhyvar Cor'EtrialShadow Queen." She said taking another step forward, liquid shadow seemed to drop from her form and stain the floor. Wisps of darkness blotted out any light that surrounded her. "And you are my chosen, Lulani Zenar'inan."

The man smiled a crooked smile, one hand resting on the pommel of one of his daggers. "No need for names Darling. You won't be alive to repeat it." The man's demeanor changed as he finished. The man donned a blank mask, his stance moved to an offensive one and he struck out with a vicious blow, slicing at Damaia's midsection as he produced both daggers and crossed the distance in a blur of movement.

image.png.c10c75ae87ff3a4c8be5b579a00cc1a8.png Lulani Zenar'inan - Shadar Kai Hexblade Warlock of the Tome

AC: 14 | HP: 21/22 | Initiative: +3 | Passive Perception: 13

Curiosity, sadness, and awe hit Lulani like one of those heavy pillars she saw fell on her. Before she new it, her legs gave way. She was on the floor with tears streaking down her face. It was all just too much to bear. She had always hoped to meet what was truly behind the book, but never could imagine what she would do when she did. "Ex... excuse me... forgive me. I...", Lulani wanted to offer some sort of apology, but wasn't really sure why or how. She went to dry her face with her mother's cloak, her hand shaking. She was at a lose for words. Why didn't she look into the dim more? Why didn't she study more into religion? Truly, it wasn't that she didn't want to. More often then not, the opportunity just wasn't there. Religion wasn't really that high in regard in her home town, unless it was Qalo, or perhaps some other of war. Her sister and the Shadow Wolves would not give too much information on their part, after all she wasn't really one of them.

It takes all her will to stand and stop crying, but she did not want to seem weak in front of her patron. Va kar tel'quiet Al Ar emar. Sal am at vian disposal. Sen nha vian will?"You do me a great honor. I am at your disposal. What is your will?", her voice shakes more then she wants, she glances into the piercing blue eyes, unsure rather she should look away or not. She focused her racing mind to pay attention to what the woman had to say.

Dae nodded again. "Yes, of course. As it's been told, a hero of the people, not only defending them, but further nuturing their lives..." I am jaded to think no hero can be flawless?

"Thank you, again." Dae turned once more from the dark oak counter to follow where the half-orc had pointed. "The tiefling....?" On the half-orc's confirmation of direction, Dae walked towards the towering shelves. She'd really never been anywhere like this. It was daunting. She decided finding Damaia would be a better first turn than trying to decipher the titles on her own.

Dae drifted along the shelves, quietly, in respect for the silence of the library. She glanced down at her hands, still dirty from the day. Muttering in elvish, she flexed her strong fingers delicately and the dirt on them faded. She would not smudge a single page here with her own grubbiness.

She was still pondering her hands when she made the final turn into the row where Damaia stood. She looked up. "Damaia, I found you... " Her low voice trailed into silence as she took in the scene. The man in dark armor, with a cold expression and evil daggers. And, Damaia, sword whirling in a viscious defensive strike.

There was no time, no time to do anything but act. "Help, there's an attacker in the library! Lulani! Veroth!" She then focused on the man and braced herself against the coming wave of emotion. She whispered, something only the man could hear... the penetrating wail, a single stroke, of a misplayed violin.

OOC

While walking, Dae cast prestidigation to clean her hands.

Action: Cast Dissonant WhispersCasting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet

You whisper a discordant melody that only one creature of your choice within range can hear, wracking it with terrible pain. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 3d6 psychic damage and must immediately use its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from you. The creature doesn’t move into obviously dangerous ground, such as a fire or a pit. On a successful save, the target takes half as much damage and doesn’t have to move away. A deafened creature automatically succeeds on the save.

Movement: Depends... if Dam is between her and the man, she will stay put.

The man held a look of contempt, unamused with Damaia's little trick. Damaia's blade had knicked his shoulder as he retreated after his daggers struck an invisible force and he held them up to his eyes and sucked his teeth. His attention was shifted to Dae as she shouted for help, the man gave a low chuckle. Then Dae's words cut into him but he brushed Dae's magic aside, able to withstand its full effect. "There you are, pretty bird." He says, his voice deeper and darker behind the mask. "I was told you sing real pretty like. Too bad no else will get to hear it."

Dae's cry for help seems to fall on deaf ears, seemingly eaten by some kind of invisible barrier. Before she can speak again the attacker is running towards her leaving his back open to Damaia as he rushes towards Dae and delivers three slashes with his daggers.

Across the Oria Lulani stands face to face with her Patron, who can sense the hesitation in her. "There is nothing to forgive Lulani Zanar'inan, I have watched you, and waited to see your progress. You have grown strong Lulani, your mother is proud of you." The Shadow Queen pauses as the words pass her lips. "I must request something of you, a relic of mine. The Crown of Shadow lies somewhere in this city in the hands of someone who has no right to wield it. Retrieve it and I will bestow more of my powers upon you. You will need them for the road ahead."

Her tears spilled over once more. Her mother was proud of her. This coming from the very being whom no doubt worked with her mother. She cleared her tears again, listening with all her might as if trying to etch the words on her brain. "Yes, of course. It would be a great honor. How might I find this person? What do they look like? Their name? What does the relic look like?", she asked excitedly. A magical relic that was blessed by her patron? She thirsted for this object like she was in the desert and no water to be found. She needed it. Although there was selfishness there, she recognized that she did actually need it. The patron had said it and for what was to come ahead. There was awe there as well. To think she was worthy of such! Her ego wasn't that surprised, she always knew she was worthy. A part of her wasn't so sure though. Who was she after all? Her mother was great, but did that mean her children were too? The doubts bubbled and popped as they had want to do. She quieted them by focusing once more.

He was so fast and so precise. She had felt pain before, but not like this, not accompanied with such a coursing bright red flow of blood. Her mind's calm eye flickered through the events of the day. She was supposed to be a hero, she was supposed to have a chance to do something right. Implausible, impossible. It could never be. I should have known. The others though...

"Damaia, you are destined for something greater than this, believe in it, believe1d6 inspiration to Dam."

Dae considered options, but there was only one that gave them both a chance to get away. He must run. Indeed, it really didn't matter what happened to her, Damaia must have a chance to get away. Her gaze narrowed on the man, and with a choked whisper, repeated the screeching violin stroke that only he could hear. All the sorrow, all the pain, if it ended now... at least she wasn't on a ship.

The masked man dodged Damaia's first strike as she lashed out at his running form. Her second finds flesh as her blade bites deep into his back. He turns quickly on his heels and strikes at Damaia once aiming to make her off balance and then attempts to knock her off her feet with a well-placed strike to the inside of her knee. Still on the offensive, he feints an attack at Damaia and instead attempts to kick Dae and knock her over as he throws a sharp kick toward her solar plexus.

"The one you seek carries no name by birth. They are merely called the Butcher. Find them, take my relic, and use it. Once you do we shall meet again Lulani Zenar'inan. For now, I believe the ones you came here with are in need of assistance, go to them." Her words were cryptic but like the clouds that parted for the sun slowly her shadows began to fade. Her form dissipated in front of Lulani. The world brightened at her patron's departure, the cold feeling in the air lifted, and the prickling on her skin left. Eventually, her form was gone and the only trace left behind was a piece of paper, a torn page from a book.

Damaia no... it's not worth it, I'm not. Dae stumbled back as Damaia interposed herself between Dae and the attacker. It was a simple act to defend her. But, it was that act that made Dae realize that the battle mage would not leave her. If they were to leave this cursed library on their feet, it would be together. She thought of Lulani. Had she been attacked as well?

Dae backed away from the fightIf possible to do so as a bonus action, she will slip her shortbow off her pack while backing away., towards the end of the row. "LULANI!" 🎵 Theme 🎵

The masked man straightened as he watched Dae runoff out of his reach. He clicked his teeth and raised a single dagger at Damaia while walking backward as he eyed the Tiefling. "Seems our playtime is up darling," He said twisting the blade in his hand, he now held it by the blade. When he was outside of Damaia's range he cocked his arms back and launched both daggers, aiming for Dae. Both daggers fly past Damaia and then past Dae as they whiz past her and implant themselves into the nearby shelf. The man laughed as he turned and ran down the opposite end of the shelves. "Till next time darling, keep the songbird safe for me!" He said as turned at the end of the shelves and headed right. Once he was thirty feet from Damaia the sound of his footsteps disappeared entirely.

Veroth looks up from where he had been sitting and stands up from behind the desk and looks at Dae. "Is everything okay over there?" He asks.

Damaia makes a swipe as the man backs up, though exactly what she's doing is a little hard to spot, as every time her arms pass in front of her they effectively disappear. As he makes his escape she considers taking a parting shot at him but decides its best to let him go, she didn't want to risk damaging the library, and she was unsure exactly what he might be leading them into if they followed.

"Dae! He has retreated, Where is Lu? There might be more danger.."
