Dae leaned heavily against the end of the row, quickly completing the retrieval and preparation of her shortbow with an arrow before responding. First, to Veroth, "No, not okay. We were just attacked. The fellow was masked and fled in that direction." She gestured with the notched arrow. "He is hurt... dangerous... does the library have some kind of security that could stop him?" 

Then, to Damaia, "I don't know. I found you first..." Dae looked around for any sign of Lulani, she listened carefully a moment, and then cried out again. "Lulani!"

By the time Lulani got to her allies, Dae and Damaia were without an attacker. They were both more roughed up than when she last saw them and fresh blood flowed freely. She glared at them for just a second, "Where?! Where did they go?!", she started to head towards the direction indicated seeing red. Lunlani was angry that she ran for no reason and that her allies had been attacked so close to where she was and she was not there to help.

Dae was still hunched over, looking around, into the shadows. "Lulani... I'm glad you're unhurt. I... I am sorry. I think he was after me. It was just one masked attacker, he fled in that direction, but he was fast and... accurate. I can't remember his name, but I recognized his voice." Dae grimaced as she pulled herself erect. She probed at a deep cut on her side before pulling her cloak over to cover it.

"I've avoided port towns for so long. I thought... I'd hoped they had thought me dead, or didn't care, or somehow wouldn't recognize me. But, I guess I haven't changed that much..." She gave a sheepish smile that came no where near her eyes. "I shouldn't have gone into that inn. The sailors, the drinks they sent over... I convinced myself it was a coincidence, that I was seeing shadows in the daylight. Idiot."

She sighed, then went over to where the man's daggers were implanted into a bookshelf. She eyed them a moment and then pulled them free, tucking them into her belt. She reengaged the arrow on her shortbow, then turned to Damaia. "Thank you. You saved my life. I... I just don't want you to do it again."

"Both of you, and the others, you must not risk yourself, this *mission*, for me. I am not worth it. If it happens again, just let me go. I am grateful at least... that it seems they want to kill me."

When she reappears from between the books she takes a moment to let the shadows fall from her like water, only then she does she look back to the retreating assailant.

She comes up to Dae and looks past her just to make sure that there was no one else here to try and do violence. She sets her hand on Dae's shoulder "Unfortunately, my friend. Only I get to decide who and what I risk my life for.. Not you."

Time was passing and with no further attack, it seemed safe. Dae relaxed her shortbow and took a steadying breath before responding. "Damaia... I... I know there's a prophecy, but just as we're supposed to go on after Serysh, if something happens to me, you must, you *will*, go on. I feel I am not as important as you all."

Dae took a moment to suffer the feeling of nausea that rose in her throat. With its passing, she pulled each dagger in turn out from her belt to examine it more closely. "Look here... poisoned. Damaia, did he strike you with one of them? Do you feel ok?"

With another look, she pointed out a small rune on each daggers. "And runes on each one... do they mean anything to either of you?"

Veroth's brow furrowed, his mind racing to protect the Oria and its occupants, An attack in such a public place was unheard of. "This is troubling news," Veroth replied, his voice laced with determination. "We must act swiftly to secure the Oria and summon reinforcements from the city guard. Let me invoke the protective wards and enchantments that shield our precious halls."

Veroth closed his eyes, drawing upon his connection with the ancient magic that coursed through the Oria's walls. As he extended his hands, a faint glow emanated from his palms, spreading throughout the library. Invisible barriers shimmered into existence, warding against intruders and preventing unauthorized entry or exit.

"The Oria is now fortified," Veroth reassured. "The arcane enchantments shall keep us safe within these walls. I will send word to the city guard, alerting them to the threat that has befallen you."

Not seeing the attackers, Lulani curses and comes back to the other two. She glares at Dae for a moment and then her face softens. She cocks her head to the side a bit, "Why would you think that? What makes you worth less than anyone else?" Lulani was miffed, why would anyone think that way? "So, they are from your past? Are they the reason why you think this way?", her eyes hardened and anger flared once more. She wanted to chase them even more. She wanted their heads. She let out a frustrated growl and let a sigh out in an attempt to quench the anger once more.

 

The warlock took a look at the weapons left behind. Lulani watched Veroth with interest, before she gives the daggers more of a look over. If she didn't need a bath, she would likely sleep here. It was tempting though... the library would likely close right? Perhaps she could hide down an isle? "Thank you.", she says to Veroth before he heads off. "Perhaps we should find someone with healing?"

Dae sighed, a deep sigh of reluctance and acceptance. "Lulani... I will answer your questions, I owe everyone that, but perhaps we can wait until the group is back together? I wouldn't like to have to tell the tale more than once." The young woman tried to smile, but failed with a wince at the pain in her side.

"Healing? I, I should be fine... I just need to rest a bit. As it's secure now, perhaps we could wait an hour... while you both continue to research?" Thoughtful, she looked at the floor a moment, but then looked up quickly.

"Lulani, are you able to message your sister from here? I hope my mess has not spilled over them as well."

As she spoke the word "mess", she looked at the weapons now in Lulani's hands. "May I see the daggers again? From this angle the runes look different.

I remember hearing a tale about John the Rat... an art thief from Anthropoi, he had marked daggers, enchanted such that would return to him. If only we could change the owner of these? Do you think it possible?"

Lulani reaches out to Enia to look out for a person running away from the library. She thinks about running after them, staying behind enough to not be spotted, but she looks at the other two and thinks better of it. Her eyebrows furrow slightly in frustration, how dare they do this and get away!? She lets out a sigh, they will likely see them again. Hopefully Enia can follow them to where they are holding up...

 

She goes up to the nearest librarian, "Where might we find someone with healing capabilities or potions? Are there any available at this hour?"

Dae was flummoxed. She'd been shown more care and consideration by these two womain in a single hour, than she'd seen in uncountable days. However, she felt somewhat uncomfortable with it and tried to play down her injuries. "Lulani, I'll be ok, I can heal myself a little bit, if I need to. And, I don't think Damaia is hurt?" She looks to the battle mage for confirmation.

"However, if we can simply rest here an hour, it might allow me to recover enough."

She looked to the librarian, Veroth. "I... do we need to involve the city guards? If it's safe enough for a short period, then we can be on our way. Perhaps... there is a back door?" Dae looked very sheepish in the moment. She didn't know how she was going to extracate herself and not put everyone in danger. "I suppose, if the guards could escort us back to our inn?"

Dae wasn't convinced it was a good idea, but her primary goal at the moment was to get Lulani and Damaia safely reunited with Mags and Billie. After that, it didn't matter much.

"I'm fine" she waves her hand, her long black nails tracing symbols through the air. A little prestidigitation makes faint crimson trails from her fingertips show the magical symbols she is tracing float in the air "I have a little magic trick that keeps blades away from me. Unfortunately its mostly run its course but it kept me safe."

She sets her hand on Dae's shoulder "Everything is fine.. We'll just casually leave and meet up with the others and let them know what happened. Then we can decide what to do next."
