Year 2950: A Darkness in the Marshes

Vladim

Recommended Posts

The great orc raised his broad-bladed sword again and put forth his shield: he knew that his attack had knocked the wind out of the Beorning, and he closed in for the kill... but though bloodied, Dahr-Ol responded with another mighty swing aimed squarely towards his chest. The cruel smile on his lips was short-lived as the blow connected and pushed him back with the full force of Dahr-Ol's weight behind it, cracking a few ribs in the process even as the armor shielded his vitals...

But the blackened rings of his mail-shirt were no match for the keen axe-head. The great orc fell, and he did not rise again.

OOC

That's a hit despite Dahr-Ol being weary, and a piercing blow. I'll make the protection check below...

Edit: That's a Gandalf (12), which counts as zero for creatures of Shadow... so it's a kill!

Barin Greycloak
lhV7Mo1.png

Barin grunted as he took a glancing blow to his ribcage from another one of the creatures, yet he couldn't afford to take his eye off the creature he was currently locked in combat with. His axe had bitten deep on the first blow, and he hoped that the fall of their leader beneath Dahr-Ol's blows would be enough to demoralise and distract them.

Spinning his axe within his grip, he bought it through the backswing now with an upward strike diagonally across the foul beast's torso, aiming to take it through the chin and skull if he were lucky. He determined that there would be one less creature to fight very, very soon.

T —Cecil Brandybuck— T

Cecil curled his toes.

Horror!

The blur of figures were obscured in their own way by mud and mist, but there were outliers at the edge of his vision: sickly orcs, hunched with stretched out bows. They were not much larger than boars. In the fog, he could almost see them as such. He let the instinct of a thousand hunts carry him and sent an arrow hissing through the reeds. The shot, quiet as it was, seemed a grave pronouncement to Cecil. He felt all at once naked to the enemy and collapsed where he stood.

As their leader fell, the orcs faltered for a moment.

Cecil’s arrow flew: timely and well-aimed, and swift and nearly unseen. It struck one of the Snagas in the neck. The orc fell to the mud instantly, clutching the wound, but his efforts to staunch the blood were for naught. He lay there dying, the black life-blood draining from him quickly.

Ernstyr responded in much the same manner, but his arrow missed its mark: the sole remaining orc archer. Yet the cowardly scout had had enough. Without hesitation, he threw down his bow and, taking advantage of his companions’ inability to do anything to prevent him, quickly fled into the mists.

Soon the battle grew bitter and mercyless in the frontlines. One of the orc soldiers surged forth with a wild cry of hatred. He struck viscously at the over-exposed Dahr-Ol, seeking to make his moment of triumph short-lived. The retaliation forced the Beorning, and only his armor prevented him from being slain on the spot.

Barin found better luck: whatever warding-spell had been placed upon his ancient elven helm, it seemed to work. Only one blow struck him, despite many being targeted against him. Even that it did not reach his vitals.

As for Gramtyng, he had at last made himself known to his foes, if only by seeking to rally his comrades. For all his efforts, he was punished with a vicious strike: not life-threatening, but enough to knock the air out of his lungs and to force him to raise his shield again.

OOC

Round 2 summary:

Company actions:

  • Dahr-Ol (forward) slays the Black Uruk.
  • Gramtyng (forward) misses Orc soldier #2.
  • Barin (forward) hits Orc Soldier #1 with a fell axe and hits for 5 damage (now at -10 endurance, but still standing).
  • Cecil (rearward) lets loose his prepared shot against Snaga #1... attack roll is 19 (because of the Bow of the North Downs) so it hits, and it counts as a piercing blow (because of Prepare Shot). Edit: Protection check is failed, so the arrow slays the Snaga outright.
  • Ernstyr (rearward) shoots Snaga #2... edit: but misses.

Enemy actions:

  • Black Uruk: N/A (slain)
  • Snaga #1: N/A (slain)
  • Snaga #2: Escape Combat (automatic success due to positioning)
  • Orc soldier #1 (-10 end): Attacks Barin (TN 15), misses.
  • Orc soldier #2 (unharmed): Attacks Gramtyng (TN 12), scores an extraordinary success for -10 endurance. Gram is close to becoming Weary (but not just yet).
  • Orc soldier #3: Attacks Dahr-Ol (TN 10), scores a piercing blow and great success for -7 endurance (bringing Dahr-Ol to 0 endurance, and making him unconscious) and Dahr-Ol must also make a Protection test (TN 12) or suffer a wound. Remember that Dahr-Ol is weary, so any 1s, 2s and 3s on the d6s count as 0s. If Dahr-Ol suffers a wound AND is at 0 endurance, he is considered to be dying and will have to receive help (a Healing roll) within 12 hours. Dahr-Ol may also elect to take Knockback, which will reduce damage taken to -4 endurance (and allowing him to remain conscious) but prevents him from taking any actions in Round #3 or changing stances.
  • Orc soldier #4: Attacks Barin (TN 15) and hits him for 4 damage. Barin is close to becoming Weary (but not just yet).
  • Orc soldier #5: Attacks Barin (TN 15), misses.

Updated PC endurance at the first post... let me know if any of you will take Knockback to half damage (rounding up).

Good luck for Round #3!

The force of the blow made Gramtyng growl with frustration, but the following jab with his blade bled the orc well enough. The sight of an archer fleeing meant they had very little time to handle this situation, and he used gestures to point out the next target to his companions, trying to rally them.

Using a point of hope to make Rally a success. Theres only so many failed rolls I can tolerate. Its a grea success so 3 endurance restored.

Barin Greycloak
lhV7Mo1.png

Somehow, the Orc he was battling was still standing, despite having struck two good blows. Indeed, his concentration on his foe was so intense that Barin failed to notice the wounds Dahr-Ol was taking beside him, or the blow coming from his side that connected.

Luckily, the blow was not too severe, failing to penetrate the Dwarf's armour, but enough to momentarily wind him.

Nonetheless, he was determined that his current foe would be going down with his next blow.

Regaining his footing, he swung at the creature before him for a third time, his Axe describing a wide arc aimed squarely at the Orc's hip. If the blow connected and wasn't enough to kill the foul beast, then he hoped it would be enough to shatter the creature's leg and leave it defenceless upon the ground.

Dahr-Ol of the Beornings

spacer.png

Dahr-Ol grunted as another blow landed, it was all he could do to keep from screaming. The big Uruk was dead, but it had left him near death and his new opponent would not relent. Neither would Dahr-Ol. Staggered and knocked back from the last blow it was all he could do to keep his footing and swing. So swing he did, with everything he had left, though in his weakened state it would be less than he wished.

Axe stats: Damage 9/Edge 10/Injury 20

spacer.png

Wounded in her own right Elfwynn refused to yield the field to the orcs and stayed doggedly at Dahr-Ol's side.

T - Cecil Brandybuck - T

A sucking thud drew Cecil back to the melee. An orc laid at Dahr-Ol’s feet, but the man looked utterly spent. Blood ran down his torso and he did not move as another orc closed ranks. Not even to raise his weapon!

Cecil nocked his bow. The reeds that had been his wall became an infuriating hinderance. He pressed into the clearing, bending stalks - pressing until the creature was too clear. For it was as black and horrible as the others he had seen at Mountain Hall and its blade was slick with blood.

He screamed and let go his arrow.

The fight in the frontlines had grown fiercer and bitter. The cowardly Snaga had fled the field, but his comrades, who had not seen this, were fighting to the last, despite having lost their leader. With grim determination they sought to inflict as much damage as possible-and perhaps take a life in vengeance-even as the tide of war was turning against them.

The archers saw their opening, and two projectiles were let loose. Cecil's struck his mark, but it did not fell him. Ernstyr's fared even better. The long shepherd's bow of the Woodman-twice as tall as the hobbit-sang as it unleashed its arrow, aimed to relieve Barin from the enemies that now surrounded him. At once, one fell, and the dwarf found himself still outnumbered-but now only two stood against him, not three.

It was aptly timed too, for in his frustration, Barin had overextended himself, and the orc he was fighting sought to take full advantage of the chance... yet the dwarf was swifter than his foe's vengeful strike, and quickly corrected his stance, and the bent sword simply glanced harmlessly off his armor.

Gramtyng at last was finding better luck too, and quickly repaid his foe with Cenegeslit, and the keen-bladed sword finally tasted orc-blood...

But worse than all fared Dahr-Ol and Elfwyn: smelling blood, two desperate orcs converged on him, and closed in for the kill. The Beorning could not hold them back, for he was weary and wounded, and after a wild and vicious melee, his last strength was sapped, and he fell to the muddy soil. His injuries were great, but he still drew breath-though in the fog of war, his friends did not yet know it.

OOC

Round 3 summary:

Company actions:

  • Dahr-Ol (forward) fails his protection test, taking a wound, and also takes knockback.
  • Gramtyng (forward) strikes Orc soldier #2 for 10 damage and burns 1 point of Hope to restore +3 endurance to Rally Comrades, restoring +3 endurance to anyone that will lose endurance in the current round (if not unconscious). Eye rolled does not count towards raising awareness threshold (only out of combat counts).
  • Barin (forward) misses Orc Soldier #1 and overextends himself (eye), provoking a called shot.
  • Cecil (rearward) shoots Orc Soldier #3... and hits him for 5 damage.
  • Ernstyr (rearward) shoots against Orc Soldier #5... edit: hits for 14 damage (great success & shepherd's bow), staying his foe

Enemy actions:

  • Black Uruk: N/A (slain)
  • Snaga #1: N/A (slain)
  • Snaga #2: N/A (escaped)
  • Orc soldier #1 (-10 end): Called shot against Barin (TN 15)... edit: misses.
  • Orc soldier #2 (-10 end): Attacks Gramtyng (TN 12)... edit: misses.
  • Orc soldier #3 (-5 end): Attacks Dahr-Ol (TN 10)... edit: piercing blow for 4 damage (3 is healed by Gram's Rallying, so total of 1). Dahr-Ol is now at 1/29. Also, make another Protection test (TN 12, weary): if you fail, Dahr-Ol takes another wound and falls unconscious.
  • Orc soldier #4: Attacks Dahl-Or (TN 10) if still conscious... or Barin (TN 15) if not; in the former case, Dahr-Ol takes 4 damage and is reduced to 0 endurance, falling unconscious; otherwise the blow misses Barin.
  • Orc soldier #5: N/A (slain)

Barin Greycloak
lhV7Mo1.png

From the corner of his eye, Barin saw the huge Beorning crumple into a boneless heap on the floor, just as one Orc's huge curved blade nearly took the tip of his nose off. Luckily for the dwarf, he moved his head at just the right moment to avoid losing it.

He screamed bloody defiance at his remaining assailants.

His own blow swinging wide had unbalanced him slightly, so Barin shifted his stance slightly to regain his footing before swinging his axe once again at his nearest assailant. He realised that he was now horribly exposed to danger with Dahr-Ol being out of the picture, and despite Gramtyng weighing in swinging his blade like an avenging knight, began to consider the possibility of retreat.

OOC

One more round here in forward stance, and then, if he's still up and about and able to, Barin will retreat to an open stance for the next round...

"Death take you all." Snarled Gramtyng, slamming the orc with his shield as he saw the Beorning go down. "Return to the filth that spawned you." He continued, stabbing with the dwarf-forged blade into the orc's stomach twice. The angle should have made it near-impossible for the creature to see the attack, but this was no elegant strike, it was more akin to knifing someone held down. But at this point... At this point the rage began to flare. Still bound by his will, but for how long? The snaga got away. Reinforcements could come.

Great Success on attack + Piercing Blow, which means the Orc takes 10 Damage and has to do a Protection Test TN20 or be Wounded.

Cecil Brandybuck

Cecil kept an eye to the flank, expecting screaming arrows from all directions. The obscurement comforted him, but he knew it was a false comfort. Every distant rustling reed or branch kept him guessing.

He strung another arrow, with a third held between his knuckles. Then he screamed again, hoping in desperate vanity that the orc might turn to look or stay his blade.
