At the quote of her mother's saying Marygay interjected, "Well, contrition and obvious regret are better to show than nothing." As it became obvious that Ehnola was trying to get off the call, Margay also gave her goodbyes and hung up.

A few hours after dinner, as she was thinking about turning in for the night, her phone suddenly rang, jerking her from her own thoughts and causing Gaeloraxus to swear at her as the Craftingi dropped from her hands. The number on the display matched that of the Plaza del Tirio.

Enhola reached for her phone and answered the call "hi is that you Mary"? Mary sounded more factual than from the first time they had met so Ehnola was merely exercising caution.

A voice, heavily distorted and twisted yet somehow still perfectly understandable, said, "Your service is required. Meet at <some address in Alphabet City near the park> within forty minutes." Without waiting for a response, the line disconnects. Ehnola knew that that effect had to be done via magic and Gaeloraxus hisses, "Well, that's suspicious..."

Enhola places the handset down and replied to her inner demon "indeed it is, we had better be on our guard" she says and prepares to leave.

OoC: Would Ehnola have a handgun of some sort? nothing fancy but something there just in case.

Roughly 35 minutes after the call Ehnola stepped out of an Uber in front of a non-descript row of brownstones. The basement of each building was a store of some sort or an empty storefront for rent. It was late enough that even the active stores were mostly locked and dark.

The sign for the basement business of the building that Ehnola found herself standing in front was buzzing incessantly, it's crafted neon directing traffic down the half dozen steps to Bezo's. It appeared to be a rather ramshackle and overstuffed bodega. The windows of the likely apartments that filled the rest of the building were mostly lit from within, but obscured by closed blinds or drapes.

From the shadows around the bodega entrance, Ehnola heard a soft whistle. With some trepidation, recalling the last time someone whistled at her, she tried to peer into the dark. Marygay was waiting there for her, dressed in tight fitting dark blue material with a hood pulled up over her hair.

Enhola uses her powers to protect herself with invisible armour (Ephemeral Shield ) and then enters the shop, a smile spreads from the left side of Ehnola's mouth as she takes in the sight of Marygay "wow, you look amazing" Ehnola says. The figure-hugging dress was certainly top-draw stuff, Ehnola was going to have to keep focused in order to survive.

Marygay spared Ehnola a small smile and stopped her before she opened the door. "You don't look bad 
 
yourself. This guy is a low end mover of enchanted items. You seem to have a flair for persuasion. I need your help to find out who his main supplier is. Can you do that?"

Enhola wore a figure-hugging dress that was most likely too short, she showed only a little cleavage though as she did not want to look trampy. The outfit was augmented with stockings and suspenders, a black clutch and some perfume she had been brought as a gift. It was not overly expensive but not cheap, Ehnola had done her own hair and it was not half bad.

Giving Marygay a wry smile she said "yes I can, just so long as I do not have to sleep with him, I do not do men" she said with a distasteful look.

Marygay nodded and said, "I doubt it will go that far. Hopefully just dropping Tiro's name and the threat of reporting him to the Guardians will be sufficient, unless you have another idea. He's Free Council, so likely a wildcard. Just in case, how well can you fight?"

Gaeloraxus hissed, "There is no real power here, or I would know."

Enhola pondered the question for a moment and then replied "I can handle myself but I am no super girl. My powers are not destructive, they are more subtle than that" she said with just a hint of doubt.

"Well, hopefully it won't become a thing." Marygay added with a wink before she pulled the door open and stepped inside.

The bodega was crowded with shelves of dusty merchandise around the walls and down the central shelf that divided the barely twelve foot wide room in half. The wall to the right was a humming bank of soda and beer coolers. The florescent lights flickered and strained to provide even the faint grey gloaming light that suffused the room. The light felt weak and insufficient, but was still enough to dispel shadows and paint the room in an unsettling sharp relief.

Behind the counter at the end of the center shelf row sat a nearly ball round brown skinned man with pie-bald patches of pale pink skin scatter shot across his face and arms. When he smiled at the two women entering, the flash of silver on his teeth was readily apparent even in the low-light. In an almost comically extreme mexican accent he says loudly, "HOLA, senoritas! I am so happy for such fine ladies to come into my establishment. How can Ramon please you tonight, eh?"

Marygay strides across the room quickly and says, "Hello Ramon. I hear you can get your hands on interesting items." As she spoke she subtly flared her Nimbus around herself, a faint tracing of gracefully curving waves of movement and force around her.

Ramon's eyes never left Marygay as he said, "Oh yes, senora. Ramon can help you. What are you looking for?"

"Really I need to know who you work for, and how to get in touch with them."

Ramon laughed uproarishly, flashing silvery teeth. "No, no. Ramon is all you need."

Enhola stood back a little from Marygay and watched the guy called Ramon, she did note the aura around Marygay and knew that it was protective magic. Not sure how this would pan out, Ehnola kept herself at the ready, just in case.

Marygay and Ramon continued to talk back and forth as Ehnola scanned the small storefront. She noticed that the merchandise on the shelves were all surprisingly old. Several brands she hadn't heard of in years, even back home. Glancing behind the counter where Ramon sat, she could see a few geejaws on the shelves that appeared to have a faint magical aura to them, likely Imbued items if she had to guess.

Given that the last item she interacted with that had that kind of aura to it is how she wound up with Gaeloraxus, she had a leery feeling looking at them. She was forced to wonder how the Guardians had not rolled in a crushed this place to dust.

Gaeloraxus roiled somewhere in her mindscape, and hissed, "There is something off here. Why would he have those items on display and no wards on the walls?"

Enhola thought that Gaeloraxus had a very valid point, that is strange, perhaps he does not know of their aura. That potentially could be dangerous she says to her inner demon, there were too many possibilities to hazard a good guess thus she continued to scan the store for any more auras.

Ehnola maintains her cool countenance as she continues to scan the room. Little else of note jumps out, although she notices that some of the dried herbs in the dusty tins are traditional herbs often used in ritual work. Her attention snaps back to the conversation between Marygay and Ramon as Marygay slides a few bills across the table. There was no stir of magical energy, but the cash vanished from the counter quicker than Ehnola's eyes could follow.

Ramon whispered a name to Marygay, but Ehnola was able to still pick it up. "Rhodes over on State. Today's phrase is 'Klondike'. It didn't come from me." Marygay gave him a smile and caught Ehnola's eye before turning and heading for the door.

Enhola could not believe the speed with which the guy could move money, she had not picked up any magical aura but there were ways around that. She gave the guy a nod and followed Marygay out the door, once in the car she says "I got the name, what next"?

"We go find this Rhodes guy." Marygay said with a smile. "You can ride with me, if you want." She started leading the way half a block down the street where the same car from earlier was parked.

Enhola smiled and thought is that a trick question? "yes, I would like that" she said. Slipping into the seat next to Marygay was slightly exhilarating, Ehnola could feel her heart begin to race a little as she buckled her seatbelt "I will keep my eyes peeled for anything that could be interesting" she said as she realised she was staring at Marygay's legs.

Marygay smoothly pulled out into the relatively light traffic. As she drove she spared Enhola a glance and a small smile. "Soooo.... I know your new to town. How have you been finding the place?"

Enhola responded to the question "I am doing ok I guess, work keeps me busy in the week and study most nights and weekends. I have had one or two days sightseeing but travelling on my own is a bit of a letdown, what I could do with is a partner to travel with or just a travel buddy who knows the best sights to see" she said with some hope in her voice.

Marygay nodded, darting smoothly around traffic. "Where have you gone?" She glances at Enhola and continues, "I would guess you've been to Central Park, Fenway, and Liberty Island, but not actually up in the Statue. A Lorehouse or two, of course."

Enhola replies "and the Museum of Natural History, then Ground Zero" her words became audibly lower as that experience was quite emotional. With a more uplift Ehnola says "so, is there anywhere else you would recommend"?

"Have you spoken with Ingersoll the Eagle? Over at the Brooklyn Athenaeum?" she asked, "Or the Catacombs under St. Patrick's? Gotta watch for vamps there though. The Vault at the Federal Reserve is kind of cool if you like big stacks of gold." She smiled broadly at the thought. "If you are into history, I really recommend Weehawken Street or Sylvan Terrace. Weehawken is tiny, but visually interesting, while Sylvan Terrace is a historical preservation of 20 rowhouses form the 1880s. Oh! There's also the old Stone House not far from here in Washington Park. It's one of the oldest buildings in New York. I think it was built in 1700."

Listening to Marygay Ehnola slowly nods "the catacombs sound good although not to be recommended on my own, I do now want to be the main meal for them. I like the history so will definitely check out the Weehawken Street and Sylvan Terrace, the Old Stone house too would be good. Now I wonder if I could just find a lovely, warm, kind, sexy redhead to accompany me" she say as she begins to giggle?

Marygay laughed, a surprisingly rich and throaty sound. "Maybe if there is a dinner involved or something," she said with a smile still lingering at the corners of her mouth. She deftly pulled into an open space at the side of the road. "I'm pretty sure the place is just up that way a block or so." She waited a moment for traffic and then stepped out of the car, quickly moving around the front to the sidewalk.

Getting out of the car Ehnola joined Marygay on the pavement (sorry sidewalk), in a low voice she says "I wonder who Klondike is"?

Marygay led the way by a step or two down the pavement. "Pretty, but dumb." She said, with a toothy smile. Gaeloraxus chuckles slightly in Enhola's mind. Something about her inflection made it sound like she was quoting something. "I'm pretty sure that is just a passphrase, not really a person."

Up ahead of them, Enhola sees a glowing sign advertising another open basement bodega. She notices some possible sigils hidden in the neo-punk art design of the sign advertising "State St. Staples"

 

Roll Request

Go ahead and give me an Int+Occult roll, +2 bonus from Gaeloraxus helping. DC 1 to confirm they are mage sigils. DC 3 to know they signal this bodega as a Free Council safehouse.

Marygay stops outside of the shop, giving Enhola a second to catch up. As she does so, Enhola is able to pickup some well hidden markings on the sign that she recognizes as Free Council marks signifying this shop as a safehouse and point of contact. Marygay says, "I've not been here before, so I don't know what the situation is going to be like. We'll need to be on our toes and play it by ear. I'll take the lead, but be ready to back me up, ok? Are you ready?"

This small shop seemed to be nearly a carbon copy of the first. Same old goods on the shelf, same two aisle layout. The only aspect of this shop that was different was the cashier. This time it was an unusually mundane and average looking white guy. He has a bit of dark scruff along his jaw line, throat and under his nose, and his hair was relatively short and brushed straight back. Three thin gold chains hung from his neck over his baggy plain tshirt. From each chain a single holy symbol hung: a cross, star of david and crescent moon and star. He was reading a battered and dog-eared copy of "Lolita".

Gaeloraxus shifted in Enhola's consciousness, restless and irritated. "This is consuming valuable time on a sight-seeing flirtation that should be better spent. You need to wrap this pointlessness up," he hissed balefully. Almost as an after thought he added, "There is some delicate work in place here. Someone knows their stuff."

Marygay lead the approach to the cashier, her eyes focused on the man. Somewhat surprisingly the cashier does not even glance up until she squared up in front of him. After she stood there for thirty slow seconds, he glanced up at her over the edge of his book. "Can I help ya?" he said with a pronounced Jersey slant to his voice.

Ehnola reacted to her inner demon "in what way? 

Is is something obvious or subtle, it will speed up the process if you say what is on your mind.

Ehnola stood next to Marygay like her bodyguard, watching the guy for anything that was out of the ordinary.

Marygay smiled at the guy and said, "My friend and I were recently travelling and heard this is the place to find interesting trinkets."

The guy, looking like it physically pained him to look up from his book, seemed completely nonplussed at Marygay's comment. "I guess," he said in a deep voice of smoke and gravel, "Depends on what kind of shit you're lookin' for, I guess."

Within Enhola's mind Gaeloraxus said, "Protectives in the walls, particularly the counter. Very well constructed. Turn your eyes, open your sight and get closer, I might be able to see more."

Unaware of the conversation happening in Enhola's mind, Margay continued, "Have anything to do with the Klondike?"

The guy's eyebrows rose slightly in surprise, but quickly twisted into suspicion. "I don't know you. Are you sure?"

Marygay nodded enthusiastically while making a quick gestureTo identify the gesture give me a DC 1 Intelligence+Occult roll with her hand.
