It's only a matter of time until the right opportunity comes along and makes them feel emboldened enough to reach out and stab you in the back." — Lictor Resarc Ountor, Order of the Godclaw Citadel Dinyar Straddling cliffs that plummet into the Akramis River near the Arremer Falls, Citadel Dinyar rises among the Isgeri sweep of the Aspodell Mountains. Though a mighty fortress in its own right, its architecture also features spidery buttresses and flanged steeples common to many other cathedrals of Avistan. While the citadel’s defenses appear to be few, the only route to Dinyar is long, steep, narrow, and minded by the spears and traps of the order’s sentinels. Though a relatively new construction by rights when compared to the age of other similar strongholds, Citadel Dinyar stands no less as a mighty testament to discipline and devotion. The voice of Maralictor Alessa Volso gently cut through some idle chatter, rousing others from meditation amongst those gathered within the citadel's quiet map room, warning you of the impending need to pay attention. You know what's coming. The next command that follows is always delivered in a more gruff and commanding manner, as it would naturally be one intended to bring the current company to crisp attention to salute an arrival. "ROOM!" As the door opens to the sound of your boots clapping together, Paravicar Dominita Clara walks through and is saluted by the brunette. "Thirteen members of the Choaz Company accounted for, Ma'am." Without the usual dispensary of formalities, the paravicar nods sternly in reply, then briefly eyes the line of assembled hellknights. Then she announces, "Orders from the Lictor." Handing a sealed scroll off to the maralictor, Paravicar Clara addresses the company, looking each of you in the eyes as she speaks, "As you are already aware, every one of you were handpicked for the Choaz company because of your potential. Within each of you represents the brightest and most capable of the Order's future." "Your assignment is a simple one." Here she affords a pause. "You are to go to the Menador Mountains. There, you will find the manor estate of one local warlord named Olenius Bursio." "Bursio is a known dissident, and his voice has been tolerated by the Chelish Throne for some time." The paravicar explains, briefly walking you through the circumstances leading up to the reason behind your mission, "Thanks to our impotent steward Hedvend VI, Isger has done nothing but encouraged the ilk of men like Bursio, and now as of latest report he's been negotiating with local bandits and fortifying his holdings." "You will make an example of Bursio. You will show men like these that chaos has no place to stand." A glint of torch fire reflected in Clara's eyes as she laid your objective bare, before expounding upon the details. "This will be an in-and-out mission, so there will be no need for unnecessary bloodshed. Seize those who resist, ignore the rest." "But most importantly — Apprehend Bursio if possible, neutralize him if he proves to be troublesome." The paravicar made clear the desired end-state. Someone just signed this warlord's death warrant. "But whatever you do, do not allow him to escape." "Alright, you heard the Ma'am." After salutes are exchanged and the Paravicar has turned on her heel to leave, Volso wastes no time before turning to you, organizing the first of likely many necessary details. "Report to the quartermaster at the armoury in one hour. We ride at dawn." 17 Gozran, 4715 — Somewhere in the Isgeri range of the Menador Mountains You slipped in through the warlord's estate under the cover of night beneath the new moon, with nothing but scant starlight illuminating your obsidian forms. But even with the forces of nature working in your favour, you can't help but be a little surprised at the sheer negligence of Bursio's guards. Sloppy. It wasn't until you were practically at his manor's front gate that someone had raised the alarm. Guess they'd have had to do it some time, sooner or later. [[ Mood Music ]] The ensuing chaos was easy to cut through. With your objective clear in mind, your team sifted through those who were simply escaping in a panic with little more than a cursory glance, focusing on striking down the remainder who were determined to die to protect Olenius Bursio. With a loud shattering crack, the pointman of your small assault force broke through the front door of the warlord's manor, wood splinters flying as the heavy door crashes down. With a few more guards whittled down along the way, you pick a particularly squeamish looking one, and the application of a little pain convinces him quick enough to reveal that Bursio's bedchamber is on the building's second floor. As you ascend the stairs, a few arrows whizz by, narrowly missing you overhead before clattering against the stone wall of the staircase. Rushing up to secure the landing, several of your team form a shield wall as the maralictor mumbles arcane words under her breath, "ድንገተኛ ኢሞሌሽን" Then, as she points her finger at the archer's chest, you hear the terrified shriek of pain as his body spontaneously bursts into flame, the still-burning victim crashing through a door in a foolish attempt to flee. "Olenius Brusio! By Order of Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail the Second, you are hereby under arrest for the crime of seditious conspiracy against the Chelaxian Empire!" Maralictor Volso declares, even as you watch a few shadows flit around a corner. "This is the end for you. Give yourself up!" The answer came in the form of another arrow, this time shattering off of a direct impact with one of your shields. Volso sighs. "So be it." She nods, indicating for your team to move in. iantruesilver Posted December 16, 2023 Author Clone Share Posted December 16, 2023 (edited) Combat — Round 1 (Lead up) Initiative Order Outlaws: 26 PCs: Average (A 22, B 22, O 20, PG 19, N 18, S 18, #1354 13) = 18.85 [[ Mood Music ]] As you form up around Maralictor Volso to spearhead the assault, the rest of your squadra split off to rout the warlord's bandits, with one trio remaining downstairs, and another advancing quickly past you to storm up the next flight. Just then a small group of people rush forth from an adjoining hallway, protected by the cover fire of an archer just around the corner. One lucky shot penetrated a gap in the Maralictor's half plate just under the shoulder, and she reels back with a stifled grunt while another shot shatters harmlessly on Batalan's breastplate, harmlessly sprinkling your squadre with wooden splinters. As the first of the bandits came around the corner with a rapier, his feet went up the side of the wall and to the ceiling, effectively rendering him upside down as he closed the distance to Hellknight #1354, skillfully twirling his blade to disarm him of his earthbreaker. Another volley of arrows are let loose against Batalan, with one managing to nick him in the in the face just through the eye-slit, while another flew wide and shattered a potted plant close by. Another combatant moves in to take advantage of the disarmed hellknight, and though he's delivering what seems like fierce and intense strikes through the points of his fingertips, these unarmed attacks either miss or land empty on #1354's plate armour. Yet one more unarmed bandit closes and begins to throw punches up at Batalan, but he to does not manage to make any impact here. Down the hall behind you, the one who had spontaneously burst into flame had managed to put out the fire on his body. He can feel the memorized fireball yearning for release and -- for a long, tempting moment -- the urge to stuff the fireball down that chaos-loving coward's throat is almost too much to resist. "Chaos is the tool of the enemy. I will stand with my team, for united we are mighty." Ignoring the archer for now -- his time will surely come -- Batalan focuses his thoughts on his team. Just like the team practiced, he keeps his position in the formation, acting as a defensive bulwark for those behind him, and bolstering his allies with his magical might. And, just for good measure, swinging his five-pointed morningstar at the face of the rebel in front of him. As he swings, he recites the beginning of the Order's creed. The one doing the disarming was her companies biggest threat, that was easy enough to tell, especially with the ability to bypass so many of their fighters. She aimed carefully, she needed just one shot. Actions Using Dead Shot and Rapid Shot (-2 att penalty). With PBS +1 Att and Dam. 4 attacks at +14, +14, +14, +9 Dead Shot At 7th level, as a full-round action, the gunslinger can take careful aim and pool all of her attack potential into a single, deadly shot. When she does this, she shoots the firearm at a single target, but makes as many attack rolls as she can, based on her base attack bonus. She makes the attack rolls in order from highest bonus to lowest, as if she were making a full attack. If any of the attack rolls hit the target, the gunslinger's single attack is considered to have hit. For each additional successful attack roll beyond the first, the gunslinger increases the damage of the shot by the base damage dice of the firearm. For instance, if a 7th-level gunslinger firing a musket hits with both attacks, she does 2d12 points of damage with the shot, instead of 1d12 points of damage, before adding any damage modifiers. Precision damage and extra damage from weapon special abilities (such as flaming) are added with damage modifiers and are not increased by this deed. If one or more rolls are critical threats, she confirms the critical once using her highest base attack bonus –5. For each critical threat beyond the first, she reduces this penalty by 1 (to a maximum of 0). The gunslinger only misfires on a dead shot if all the attack rolls are misfires. She cannot perform this deed with a blunderbuss or other scatter weapon when attacking creatures in a cone. The gunslinger must spend 1 grit point to perform this deed. Damage = rolled base dice amount of whichever hit +5 If that Crit Confirmed then all damage x4, adding all the damage rolls for the successful hits. But he doesn't show it, even behind his armor. He instead expresses his feelings by picking up his Earthbreaker and swatting at the bandit who disarmed him, intending to squash them like one squashes a bug that bothers them on a hot afternoon. One of the insurgents(4) begins to choke for a moment, but staggers back half a step as he tries to shake off the effects of the spell. "መቸኮል" With his off-hand reaching into a pouch for a moment, Batalan wastes no time as he casts a haste spell upon his squadra, then goes to town at the half-choked rebel fighter in front of him. "⧧⚲⎅⚲⎟⧉ ⟌ ⫶⎅•◌̜⏟" Imbuing herself with divine favour from one of the facets of the Godclaw, Octavia whittles away at the inverted idiot(1), stabbing and slicing him with her fauchard until he stands upside down no more. Turning south to pursue the fleeing archer(6), Giada lets loose a burst of magic missile, each unerringly hitting him from behind. A flurry of smallarms fire, smoke and the smell of black powder fills the air as Narcipia lets off a volley of shots, the small deflagrative bangs of propellant sounds off from her weapons. The projectiles hit the insurrectionist(3) next to the now-dead and no longer inverted man, but not enough to take him down. Behind the enemy's front line, the invisible Sophronia lets loose a bolt from her hand crossbow, the quarrel being the only hint that anyone was ever there as it speeds towards its target and pierces itself into her target(2)'s left thigh. Down the hall behind this archer she sees another two figures(8,9) rushing forward from about seventy or so feet away. 1354 easily dodges the opportunistic assault of one bullet hole riddled brute(3) and picks up his earthbreaker, then delivers a smash that ended his life as sure as the other dead guy next to him. Shaking her head in confusion, the archer(2) in front of Sophronia adjusts her position and fires two arrows at Narcipia, one puncturing her armour at the chest, and another lodging itself just under the left knee. The two(8,9) behind her quickly rush up, shouting as they run down the adjoining hallway. The staggered foe(4) in front of Batalan feebly attempts to strike out against him with an empty fist, but fails to connect. Behind your squadra and around the corner, the panicked archer(6) turns around and sets off two shots from his longbow, but both fly wild and neither manages to hit his pursuer. From around the righthanded corner to the north, the archer(C) continues to lay down cover, firing two more arrows, one of which manages to hit #1354, puncturing his armor just above the gauntlet at his left forearm.
