Interval - Aldpine

4th of Renewal, year 20

The caravan gathers up in the morning and heads back out on the road. The journey takes them on the occasional steeper climb as the land gets a bit more hilly. The road also passes through occasional woodlands and forests with open farmlands growing fewer and fewer. There are a few orchards along the way, but the trees are still very young, and you're not sure, this early in spring, whether any of them are old enough to produce fruit yet.

It's early evening by the time the caravan reaches Aldpine. Where Carisport seems like a very planned out place, with the carved out harbor, warehouses, and serpent road and neighborhoods built of stone or brick around straight cobblestone roads, Aldpine feels much more like a frontier town.

A wide dirt road winds its way through the center, with wooden buildings of vastly varrying quality slapped down next to each other with a labyrinth of dirt paths running between them all. The buildings seem to grow densest near the center where the main dirt roads rises up onto either a hill or a big pile of dirt. This central mound is mostly flat on top with a wooden pallisade around its perimeter. Uptown, as the walled in mound is called, is the nicer meighborhood and also center of administration here.

The caravan disperses at this point, with the accompanyinh guards receiving their pay.

Players: it's evening, you're in Aldpine, you have a few more coins on you - what's your plan.

New place, new people, same old busy little halfling. With her customary level of excitement and energy, Maybell is quick to ask her new friends in the caravan their further destinations and say her (momentary) farewells before she sets herself onto her task on this new place. Her party still has more traveling to do and it is to pretty dangerous places so it is time to prepare as they best can.

The halfling puts herself to the task of making new friends, listening to rumors and gathering information. Depending on the available time she'll leave to her allies the details of where they'll sleep for the night while she goes put on a new performance to make a nice impression and get her name out there on the town, get people to like her and break the ice with some people before she starts to dig into gathering information on local rumors and happenings... and then more importantly, any relevant details about the area they are going to be exploring, the sick goblins and local threats.

OOC

Maybell's core action will be to gather useful information for the party. While she likes to perform, performing in this instance is a means to an end in order to better gather information to assist with the party's quest. That said, if she can perform she'll get the best deal she can on it and take advantage of it.

GM, feel free to roll secretly for Diplomacy, Gathering information on the topics outlined above. I'll put in here a performance roll if there is time for it, if there isn't, ignore the Performance Roll and say that Maybell is only gathering information.

Khaine had enjoyed taking in the new orchards and the farmland. There were little differences to be sure, but it was all very familiar and reminded him of home. He had travelled further than he ever had, and it seemed a long way to him. Though he knew it really was only a short distance. It made him feel better to see how these people were not so different from his own folk. As he thanked the man who handed him his money he asked

"You know a good place to spend the night here? I reckon a warm bed is just the thing tonight!"

If he was offered a suggestion, he would say it to the group. It made sense to him for the lot of them to stick together if they were going to continue together. Less chance of someone getting into trouble, or coming back late. Once they had decided on where to stay, he would head there to book his bed and get a warm meal. If he had the time after, he would go outside and do some exercises and practice his movements.

Kalen thanks Khaine in return for escorting them, and asks if they're looking for further caravan work.

As far as places to spend the night, "well, there's always the Camp, basically a tent city on the North side of town inhabited by workers on their way to or back from lumber camps, but also home to people down on their luck, gangs, brigands in hiding, drifters and such. But it'll cost you nothing."

"I'll be staying at the Sleeping Bear myself. It's made to look like a hunting lodge. Cozy place. There are a few other proper inns in town. The Berry Bush, the Restful Inn, Lumber Jane's..."

"If you want a bit more luxury, the Logdriver's Waltz in Uptown is what you want."

"One of the inns," Kek says. "I don't care which one, but not the Camp. Being awoken by thieves is irritating, and I especially dislike having to wash the blood out of my bedroll afterwards."
He grunts. "And if anyone is going to look for a sparring partner, I would appreciate if you found one that uses a blade. I need to practice my stitching."

As our protagonists pause to discuss lodgings for the night, they notice Maybell has gathered her pack and is confidently heading right into town, making for the nearest large looking building, pausing now and then pleasantly asking something of passersby in her amiable voice.

Chelia decided to follow Marybell. She knew the halfling could talk her way out of many situations (softly or loudly), but some situations were only resolved with a big stick.

She would ask for some place where she can buy some writing equipment. while this clearly is a frontier town, some writing had to be done, even if it was only the amount of lumber traded. She would also ask about the region they were heading, in order to have as much information as possible

OOC

I want to buy a journal and some writing stuff. I think if I just buy the writing set (1gp) from the core book and instead of variety of paper and parchment, it contains a journal book, it should be ok

Khaine thanked Kalen and responded

"We have a job lined up at the moment, but if our paths cross again, I would be glad to work with you! Fare well for now."

As Maybell set off towards a building with the confidence of a local, the young man scooped up his bag and followed after. He didn't much like the thought of the Camp, and whereever the halfling had decided must be better than that!

Weylin was glad to have made it to Aldpine in one piece. The camp didn't really appeal to the sorcerer, so he stuck close to Maybell and the group, but couldn't help taking in the sights, this land looking quite different to the coastal port he grew up in. The coins in his pocket felt heavy, and comforting, not that he loved money, but he DID like the security and comfort it could afford.

Catching up to Maybell isn't easy at first as she finds small gaps in the crowd to move through, and her tendency to be small making her hard to spot sometimes. She seems excited to be seeing a new town.

Chalia manages to catch up first, followed very quickly by the rest, in a small lane heading to the West end of town.

Maybell has her viol out and is checking the strings.

She seems to have found her way to Lumber Jane's. The main building has a stone footing with timber frame atop and goes up three stories - taller than most in town. There are single story wings going around a courtyard right back to the forest's edge - mostly pines here.

Inside, in the common room, Maybell is perched on a stool, speaking to the proprietress (you can tell because she looks like her drawing on the sign outside), a very sturdy looking blonde woman with a bit of dark grease smeared above her upper lip looking sort of like a moustache. She strokes this "moustache" with thumb and forefinger as she listens to Maybell.

Seems Maybell has found herself a place to stay and perform. Uncanny how quickly she managed that.

As long as the inn is clean and there's little chance of being murdered in one's sleep, Chelia is fine with it. She has slept in worse conditions in the field. She does take Marybell apart before the halfling starts signing.

"You were followed by some man," she says, "he looked fairly young, early twenties, thinning sand colored hair, pock marked face, a wispy attempt at growing a beard to cover his chubby neck. You know the guy?"

"Uuh... when did Dalmar get here from New Vale? That's very good to know... thank you very much Chelia. He seems to be even more taken with me than normal... and that's saying quite a bit, given how much people like me. I might have been able to handle it... but even so, it's always a little bit scary to handle a tall guy when you're such a little lady" says Maybell quite honestly and appreciatively of the elven woman "May I impose on you further to stay with me tonight? I got a room here all to myself but I'm tiny, so you can better make use of the bed"

Maybell wanted to express her thanks by arranging for Chelia's lodging for the night... she still was feeling out what makes each of her new companions happier. Given her gallant demeanor and her position on their very frontlines, Maybell hazarded a guess that maybe Chelia would appreciate being put on the spot of a protector... plus given how polite she was, she may feel better about being given the bed if Maybell phrased it as Chelia doing her a favor instead of it being a gift.

Maybell's performance that evening is providing music for a play performed in the courtyard behind the inn, between the wings. An amateur acting company from Aldpine is performing a play about a genie who just wants to live a simple life as a potter.

The standard rate for a room at Lumber Jane's is 8 sp for a room with 2 beds, 1 sp for a bed in the large shared room on the 3rd floor, or 3 cp to bed down on the floor in the common room.

Maybell has a room and has offered to share with Chalia.

Khaine raised an eyebrow at Jane. She seemed a good, sturdy woman. He wondered what the deal with the grease was, but was too polite and shy to ask. He took one of the beds in the common room. He was used to sharing a room with other workers. But he thought he deserved a warm bed after a few days on the road. He payed his silver piece and enquired about a warm meal and a drink to quench his thirst. He enjoyed watching Maybell's performance and was happy to settle in to rest after that. He planned to be up early, to give himself some time to focus his mind and body for the day ahead.
