SIDE: Bowing to a Lich's Whims

"Those are all very insightful comments sir, " Says one of the officers, a human with brown crew cut hair in power armour, " But we dont exactly have command over the other races. You are right that they will fight like they always so it will be up to use to try to work around that idea. We dont even know if we can get the trolls to fight next to us, they are the wild cards. "

The commander says " The infected have started a battle with the front line troll troops. We can move up to one of these spots to get ready to meet them if break through and leave the current battle to resolve as it will but are risks even with that, as the infected will add to their numbers if they defeat the trolls creating more Dzoo Noo Qua."

A officer dressed as a scout speaks next, " The infected fielded around 500 units, all have powers to heal their wounds within minutes so after each battle they are fully healed and can fight with no rest. The trolls are also hard to kill but the infected special attacks will equal the playing field. They have fielded about 800 units. Commander from past battles unless the trolls have 2 to 1 odds they dont stand a chance to come out on top. If we dont help them they will create me Dzoo Noo Qua which are the hardest infected to kill with its almost instant regeneration in battle."

Inside her suit, Prax stared at the officers and commander, as if expecting them to grow another head or something, 'What the...' Eventually, she snapped out of it.

Quickly crunching the visual data and feeding it into her on-board, she held a wire frame display up in front of Jake, giving him metrics he might be more accustomed to. They weren't perfect, the baseline having been from a few years back, with SIM numbers for side-by-side comparisons.

She split the display, running a mockup of actions, and then fed it his way. She had the elven forces retreating under limited support. Allowing the front lines of the already enraged trolls to be pulled into conflict with the infected. She then had ranged support and fire concentrated behind the leading infected lines. It would hopefully stem the bleeding and blunt the attack enough to show the trolls they were serious. Meanwhile, the elves that needed it got a reprieve and could be used as reserves.

There was no telling if either faction would listen and stop their fighting, but it was at least an idea.

OOC

Just poking at things, she is trying to make Jake look good in his function. If she is giving bad information/ideas, just ignore her.

At the very least she is providing an interface for him to hopefully adapt from to the existing maps.

Jake scratches his chin as he thinks over the knowledge he receives, to include all of the readouts that Rona provided. He mummers his thanks to her before speaking to the others again. "Which Troll clans are involved? Please tell me it is not the Mal'Goran or the Da'Tora clan. If it is, they would not listen to anything I have to say, as they have blood feud with me. The other races I have dealt with and have at least a small repoire with them. I speak all of their languages and understand their cultures to an extent, as least as much as I can from working with all of them in High Command " he was happy they at least listened to him, he knew they did not have to and all of his forty something years of Military experience would go to waste, and if he had no way to pilot here and his understanding of the tech restrictions of the area was that it took special magitech ships to work here and he no experience flying those craft though if they did not require magic of his own he could figure them out he supposed. He looked at the commander and the others in the room one more time before he spoke up "So how may I be of use in this fight? I want to help but I am a pilot, engineer, and Tactician. I have no experience using a battle suit, so I will be of no use in that regard. Perhaps I can help with the other races, I did help coordinate joint missions with the other races in the past. Part of the reason i learned all of their languages. How a races thinks is intricately tied up in how they communicate, so if you can communicate with them on their own terms then you are more likely to understand how they think."

Reports from both battles come in as you all speak.

Trolls retreat but dont take many wounded. Scouts think may stop infected. Command will wait and see.

Elves take some wounds but push back trolls out their hex.

Infected then in a hard push crush trolls destoying over 50% of them and adding hundreds of infected.

"Its like first part of battle just normal infected leaders then something too order and comoletely crushed them, new tactics smart tactics completely outclass them. Something has changed. " the scout leader says.

Command looks over maps and sends messages to elves to back them.

" So we can let trolls get taken by infected or try to get them to stand with us. Will be hard to get elves agreed."

Prax knew the cultural divide was a hard barrier to break. Her unique perspective had helped her, and she hoped she would have gotten there on her own, but it had been the time in the SIM that'd allowed her to soften her prejudices...

While the tactical choice was obvious: picking between fighting the trolls outright, fighting them as reinforcements for the infected, or standing with them... The politics of that choice was not an easy one and she hated to admit it. The open hostilities between elves/dwarves/humans and orcs/trolls put any talks on the subject at risk. Siding with the trolls now would cause obvious rifts, likely alienating them for later engagements if they couldn't mitigate it. The trolls would also not likely accept them at their word, calling for action now and talking later; as they should...

She huffed in her suit. They had nothing to bargain with... nothing to incentivize working together, other than living another day... Her eyes closed with a low groan, 'That isn't quite true,' she realized. What right did they have for that though? Shaking her head, she put the thoughts aside for now.

[Observe map movement patterns for the infected, resource allocation, and places they are pushing the hardest.]Is the infected concentrating their efforts on one front?
Are there larger forces noted in certain places over others?
Are there 'specialized' or 'better' assets being exclusively used in certain areas?
Are they mass expanding vs a singular driving thrust?

OOC

Was going to put a comment, but the movement stuff seemed relevant before that.

"Lets move out regradless of the battles outcome we need to be in place, have the dwarves responded?" Commander asks hopefully.

One of the officers replies " Yes they will get there in time to support us, but they will have to force march to get to us in time." Commander nods.

As he leaves the tents and gives out orders, he assigns Prax to lead a unit as officer. He turns to Jake " If you want to give some tactical advice from HQ i will listen to anything you have to say, the enemy seems to have superior tactical knowledge so maybe we can get some of our own."

Jake and Prax are looped into the command channel so they hear how badly the battle goes.

The suggested is send to elves to hard push to take out trolls before infected get there, take no prisoner style. Told once that is down fall back and we will cover the retreat and take the first wave, giving elves time to rest and back us up.

Both trolls forces have joined with infected hot on their north army tails and add into the wall that the elves hit to boost them even more.

The elves put everything into an attack to break their wall but do little to break the hard strong skin of the trolls now backed into a corner fighting for their lives. Trolls lose nothing and elves lose 20% of their attacking force trying to break them.

Scout catch small unit of flying creatures flying around raging battle to behind the elven forces. Signal this to them but all can do is brace for the attack. The trolls seeing the elves had their own problems turns to face the main force of infected with their defense wall.

The two armies attack at once just as the humans and dwarves set up a few mins south of the raging battles, nothing can be done to help their allies to the north.

Even though the elves outnumber the infected flying units 10 to 1, they superior speed and flight., as well as their resistance to their attacks, the elves lose badly, over 70% of their troops fall, with infected only losing 10%. The rest of the elves scatter as the vampires feast on the dead and wounded on the battlefield. Elven army is routed and is no more.

The trolls do not fair well either at the main force crashes into their wall. Losing 60% of their troops their infected cousins are bigger and stronger than them, but kill 15% of the attacking infected. They fall back to the mountains to east and wont be able to fight again for a few days.

The enemy commander has tactics so Jake can roll for good side

Their aggressive nature commander is going to try to trap them.

Good: Trap tactics

The scene:

The humans get to the spot command has scouted to make your stand. With lots of open space and a hill down the infected has to come up to get to, this should slow them down a bit, at least the non fliers. Peaks on right and left allow long range snipers to hold up there. When the dwarves get here we can build a trench to trap anything on the ground.

The problem is going to be the fliers, so the missile crews will need to set up kill zones to take them out and not let them fly over to attack from behind.

When the elves arrive, there is quite awe, decked out in mithril armour, riding white steeds with wings 500 of them land in the clearing like it was nothing controlling a flying breast to land from the air.

The officers with their white helm and shields nods to the humans nearby. " We are the Aista Dúath here to stand with you till the end." Those that known Elven know the word means dreaded shadow.

A few hours later as the black cloud that surrounds the infected army is spotted entering the hex border, the somewhat tired dwarves march in step into the camp.

Helping with the setup and using their knowledge they point out best practice to use the mountain to best defense. The dwarves nod to the elves but do tell them anything about where to go, they know themselves where they are to be placed.

As the time comes for battle all the troops share time with their fellows swapping stories and wishing each other safe times in battle ahead.

Jake listens very closely as all of the battle reports come in, he winces at all of the losses, much of which he considered wasted lives because the races of this world could not work together in a cohesive unit. He had learned much within High Command, he understood each races strengths and weaknesses. It was maddening to him that none of the commanders of these forces understood these things as well. The elven commander seriously failed. He allowed the infected to pull a classic maneuver by allowing their enemies to attack each other and then coming behind fresh and mopping up the survivors, he could almost respect the enemy commander on his tactics. It's what he would have done if he had warring factions up against him.

With all of the survivors coming together finally he gets a glimpse of what they had to work with. While they had a little over two to one odds numerically, he knew that straight-up numbers would not win this war. They needed to fight smarter and more coordinated between their separate forces. The Elven fliers would help against their flying forces but should not be the only ones dealing with them. He would speak to the Dwarven engineers to see what they could come up with, perhaps they could build some ballistas to attack the flying creatures. Catapults and mangonels would be harder to build if they did not have a lot of resources locally to build them. They also needed to harden their bases defenses and then start thinking about fall back locations with Traps and defenses built to slow the enemy and funnel them to ground that favors them. If they could somehow neutralize their enemies flying capabilities he could then focus the elven fliers to harry the enemies outlier forces.

If he has a way to communicate with the different forces he will do so in their own Languages and speak to them about their strengths and how they could best help the overall war effort if only they can work together. If they did not they would lose this war and if they lost it then no race could be safe.

It was hard for Prax to listen to the discussion over the trolls. The casual callous forfeiture of their lives... Relatively, not long ago, she would have been nodding right along with them, not even questioning the morality of it. Now, she not only questioned it but the tactical choice of it as well. Even if she only used them as chaff before the enemy, it would be better than what had been proposed. Though she wished to ease her conscience, pleading for a lost cause would not do her any favors. So, she watched, listened, and endured...

Having grown restless in the command tent while they waited for the rest of their force to arrive, she thought to seek out the space and comfort of one of the spotter ridges... Having been away for so long, she quickly realized that while that might put her at ease, it was the wrong choice. Her unit of men awaited her.

She could see the lack of trust in some of their eyes as she talked with them. Who was she to lead them? Absent these many months, only to return as if nothing had happened. She had no grand words for them, no inspiring speech, nothing to 'win' them to her side. There was only the honesty of her words; she would fight with them if they would, in turn, fight with her against the coming, festering threat.

It was briefly after that, that they observed the arrival of the elves, a bittersweet sight considering recent events. The little attention she had left on her, shifted to them and their winged steeds.

Not long after, the dwarves arrived and preparations began in earnest. Ranks were quickly forgotten as she put herself and her men to the task of helping where they allowed.

As the time to battle gets closer everyone is working to set up the traps and plans as best they can. The cloud moves directly towards with looking like will just fall into the kill zone with ease. Every checks their equipment and men to make sure all is ready, the officers report in to commander and confirm all is ready. Now all there is to wait.

As the cloud gets closer you can see the front line troops, the massive infected trolls moving with purpose. The ghouls are in and around them, blind, they are there to detect things that the trolls cant see themselves with their superior hearing and smell. A unit of them moves every so closer to the kill zone at the bottom of the hill.

The cloud splits and the fliers (vampires) start to go off to the left climbing up to where some of the snipers sit, while the infected dwarves start to hop up across the rockly plain on the right, with the trolls lifting them when could not reach the next ledge. Using the rockfaces as covered your fire mostly hits rock as they make their way far to the right around the other side of the pass.

The banshee's 400 strong rush into the trap but before it is sprung, they all turn to mist and as one float through the deadly maze of death. Weapon fire is useless against their mist form, the mage unlease spells at them and that does have effect on them, but they are not slowing fast enough. As the mist reaches the defenders they reform and start to rip them apart.

Once they mist was around the other troops, the mages could not help and instead boosted the defense of the defenders. They fell back to safer area where they could battle in tight teams against the banshees. Almost forgotten the trolls and dwarves come around the bend trying to encircle the troops.

Command had send the elves to harry them and delay them enough to let some defenses be build by the allies siege weapons.

While the trap did not work, you were able to stop them from flanking you so that in itself was a result.

Attacker: Encircle

Defender: Trap

-10% casualties for attacker

-20 BR to defender.

291 allies -20 271+69(roll) -10 because foes have 1% or more flying troops negating part of your defense bonus=330

288 +10(won vs foes before)+ 40(roll)=338

Infected wins by 8 points

They hold field, allies have to retreat attacker takes no losses, defender take 10%. No one is tired after battle.

Sighting from her position along the ridge, Prax had an ideal vantage point to observe the approaching force.

Her men were as prepared as they could be... The damned credit misers had seen fit to not provide them with supplies for alchemical shots or oils. The capricious gods only knew what they expected their alchemists to do without proper supplies. She shook her head in disgust. They would have to make do without...

As the flyers came in, she reminded them to call out their shots and focus on targets. Winging one might take it out of the air, but it would just play possum until it was safe for it to move again and catch itself. They needed to reduce their numbers to help the elves out.

"...Focused shots damnit! Follow them as they dive and keep shooting!" The skies were a mess and if her system was worth its crystalline circuits, they had yet to score a kill. They were hitting them, but couldn't pin them down to finish them off... and they were only getting closer.

As the flyers broke for the ridge, hoping to scour it of shooters, Prax called for her men to get clear. It was clear they couldn't hold this point and she wasn't going to have them dragged off to their deaths.

A spirited attacker, faster than the others, flug reaching claws out before its diving charge. She interceded, body checking it and arresting its movements. Seeing the leading edge too close for them to make a clean escape, she turned to face it. Her words were rhythmic as she slammed the armored hands of her suit into the ground. Inky darkness flowed down the arms to be soaked up by the ground... When the flyers broke the ridge line, seconds behind the retreating soldiers and gaining on them, the spell was done... Lashing, cipher-covered black tentacles erupted from the ground and grabbed ahold of them before they could go any further.

Prax felt a sense of satisfaction for the briefest of time as she heard the screams of rage behind her... 'It won't kill them, but it will give us the time we need...'

Making the call, she ordered the ridge and its extended flank pulled back. They were too strung out to mount a proper defensive line against the flying and climbing threats.

As they formed up, she updated herself with the situation of the rest of the battlefield. She kept her curses to herself... 'Of course, no one bothered to test the fog or try to disperse it.'

OOC

[Retreat details are a bit thin. Don't actually know what was lost. I get the impression that a fireball would have the chance of killing something, so none have been noted.]

[No idea what reaction you want from the reveal. It could be a known thing, it could be unknown.]

She kept her curses to herself... 'Of course, no one bothered to test the fog or try to disperse it.'

[Retreat details are a bit thin. Don't actually know what was lost. I get the impression that a fireball would have the chance of killing something, so none have been noted.]

[No idea what reaction you want from the reveal. It could be a known thing, it could be unknown.]

The banshee's 400 strong rush into the trap but before it is sprung, they all turn to mist and as one float through the deadly maze of death. Weapon fire is useless against their mist form, the mage unlease spells at them and that does have effect on them, but they are not slowing fast enough.

What else did you expect them to do?

When night is in full swing your foes start to show up at end of battlefield. They gather and over the next few minutes the dim gloom is covered by completely black globes across the front lines.

The globes move forward to 1 mile from your holding position, still out of range of most of your weapon and any fired weapons at that range is a waste of power.

Next globes of darkness fly up into the sky and fall over all of your positions. A total of 50 darkness casted arrows covering 20 foot radius dispel your light spells and the darkness brings light level to darkness blinding anyone without dark vision. The elves are flying and can stay out of the area of effects. The darkness area is about 200 feet across the battlefield.

The mages try to use light to cancel but they need to highten the levels past 2nd and not many can do that on the fly(most are wizards not socerers and even less have the heighten metamagic feat)

Next volley is 32 deeper darkness arrows that cover 60 foot each covering most of the battlefield in darkness almost 500 foot more of the battlefield is in darkness.

A few dispels go off to break the darkness but with layers the only take out 1 layer and if another is within range does not help.

All light spells of level 2 or level 3 are instantly dispelled, only light spells of 4th or higher will work and dispel that area of the darkness effects.

With that done, the fliers move forward in to harry the troops. Ignoring the defense bonus but being outnumber 5 to 1 they dont do well. Even with the darkness they can caught too much with blind fire with elven spotters.

288+17(all fliers)+17(movement 100+)+10(win)+22(roll)=354

291-20-20(defense)=251 +70( 5 to 1) + 68+20(tactics) = 409

Allies win 55

Allies lose 20% but can advance, attackers lose 70% cant hold field retreat. Mod tired allies serious tired attackers

As the fliers take on the force in darkness, the archers continue to just fire volleys into the darkness knowing their arrows wont hurt their own troops. Some of the cannons fire at them, with nothing else to target.

Some pockets of light appear after the darkness is dispelled, mainly around the mages. But it is short lived as more arrows are fired to bring them back into darkness.

The main force under the cover of darkness leaves this plane through worldwalk spell and enters the ethereal plane taking about 7 mins to move 600 troops onto the plane. They then march in a straight line to the spot near the mages and the commander casts worldwalk twice making 2 portal back to the Prime. 20 troops a round pour out into the darkness and start to attack anything in the area with their ghoul seers. This also negates the defense bonuses set up.

288-17(no fliers)+10+52 = 333

291 -20 -20(defense overcome)=251+20(tactics)+1=272

61 infected win 20+20%=40% loses for infected, 50% losses for allies.

Once the commander realizes the infected are among them he calls the retreat and tried to get as many as he can out, only half he men make it off the battlefield.

Prax is not wounded or killed in the battle.

You use 2/3 of spells and spend 80% of your ammo.
